Duchess Kate & Pippa Middleton are on Time Mag’s “100 most influential” list

Time Magazine’s annual “Time 100” list came out today. This is where Time (and their readers) chose the “most influential people” of the year, broken down in categories of Artists, Inventors, etc. Some of the people who made this year’s list include Rihanna, Chelsea Handler (dear God), Jessica Chastain, Adele, Harvey Weinstein and of course, Duchess Kate and her sister Pippa Middleton. WTF? Look, I could cosign Duchess Kate’s inclusion – although she’s hilariously lazy and always on vacation, she IS “influential” and she inspires debate and conversation and everything she wears sells out. But to include Pippa as well? No.

To appreciate the remarkable rise of the siblings whose very name, Middleton, seemed to presage an unremarkable life among their fellow commoners, you must first appreciate the forces that keep most Britons in their place. Snobbery is one luxury all classes feel able to afford. The man and woman in the U.K. street are swift to mock the upwardly mobile. As Prince William whispered sweet nothings to his girlfriend, the press muttered nasty somethings about her supposed ambition to wed above her station. They dubbed her Waitie Katie and bracketed her with Pippa as “the wisteria sisters,” determined to climb.

Since Kate, 30, successfully scaled the palace walls, Pippa, 28, now globally recognized, especially from behind, has found herself under yet greater pressure. A photo editor at a British paper recently revealed he is offered as many as 400 paparazzi photos of Pippa every day.

Those images matter. The Middletons have become avatars of aspiration. Other women aim to dress like them, to emulate their easy athleticism and their more problematic slenderness.

How do the sisters feel about their influence? They aren’t saying. Latter-day Mona Lisas, they smile mysteriously and keep their mouths closed. In an age of bleating, tweeting, confessional celebrity, the middle-class Middletons show real class.

[From Time]

Full of back-handed compliments, right? It’s almost like we Americans are being snobs about the Middletons just because we don’t really get why they’re a thing? As I said – I would cosign Duchess Kate’s inclusion, and I could even see Kate inspiring a real, complimentary piece about why she deserves to be on this list. But when you throw her together with her sister, it just seems like… I don’t know. Like the official media is saying that all these ladies will be is “Waity and her pushy little party-girl sister.”

Speaking of, Waity and Pippa got the cover of Us Weekly! It’s full of weird innuendo and misinformation, though – it’s all about Pippa’s incident in France with the gun, which legit media outlets say is a non-starter. Pippa won’t be arrested. She won’t even be fined. Still, here you go:

Almost exactly a year after her sister Kate Middleton’s royal wedding, Pippa Middleton is stealing the scene again — but it’s nothing as light-hearted as flirty chats with Prince Harry or a derriere-enhancing bridesmaids’ dress.

After partying at a raucous, raunchy bash in Paris until 5 a.m., the socialite, 28, took a spin with three pals in a convertible on Saturday when photographers snapped the foursome — and, in a bizarre turn of events, the driver of the car took out what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol and aimed it at the photographer. Sitting in the passenger seat, Middleton laughed.

Nobody’s laughing now. As revealed in the new Us Weekly, Middleton will be questioned by French authorities about the gun-waving incident and faces nearly $6000 in fines and even jail time if convicted.

The royal in-laws are not pleased. “This is embarrassing for them,” a royal source says. Including big sister Duchess Kate, 30. Her sibling’s surprising photo “has put Kate in a very difficult position,” the source adds.

The mystery man pointing the gun in question, meanwhile, has finally been identified: He’s Romain Rabillard, a 36-year-old French attorney, who ironically represents German firearms manufacturer Heckler & Koch. The single Rabillard parties with a crowd of chic Parisians, including wealthy clothing designer Viscount Arthur de Soultrait — Middleton’s pal, whose wild 30th birthday bash she attended Friday evening.

[From Us Weekly]

I suspect Kate will deal with this the way she’s always dealt with criticism – she (or one of her friends) will give The Mail’s Katie Nicholl an exclusive, something involving Kate hanging out with the Queen and the Queen mentioning that Pippa seems like a nice girl. Something tidy like that.

I love that Jessica is on the list but do not really care about these siblings. Now the weird zombie twins aka The Olsen twins (my favorite siblings) would make more sense than these two.

Rihanna is on this list because…. ughh!!

  2. kelly says:

Has Waity had a nose job?

    • HotPockets says:

I think she has. Her face looks a lot different than it did a couple years ago. I know she lost weight, but her features look more defined and contoured.

    • kibbles says:

No, it just looks like natural aging (the Middleton sisters have not aged well) and extreme weight loss. Her face looked much more youthful in the bottom pics. Pippa always looked harsh. Too much smoking and drinking have aged her well beyond her actual years.

    • bluhare says:

I don’t think it’s online anymore, but the old good plastic surgery website had photos of Kate, and they think she’s had a nose job and an eye bag removal. They also think her doctor was superb.

    • sup says:

both of them have, but kate’s nosejob is far superior

  3. Gene Parmesan says:

This is the same reputable magazine that included Blake Lively in the list..What for?? and with Baz Lurhman saying some shit like, too ridiculous to recall.they lost credibility a long time go!! NEXT!!

  4. SofiaPetrillo says:

I really wish the US media would stop trying to make Pippa happen.

  5. The Original Denise says:

Waity and Uptrady influential? For what, single handedly bringing back 1970s eyeliner application? Hilarious!

    • Agnes says:

and 50s attitudes – wait around for a man with money and then sit on your ass and god forbid never actually work.

  6. lucy2 says:

After seeing another story about her on the news this morning, I was just thinking that the media needs to end their fascination with Pippa.

I don’t get it at all. I don’t see what’s so amazing about her, don’t find her to be stunningly beautiful, and don’t see her doing anything that warrants all this attention. Nothing against her or anything, but the fixation on her is insane.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I completely agree-can we just drop the American obsession with ALL the Royals, period?

  7. MST says:

TIME just made the list of one of those publications that no one reads or cares about anymore.

  8. kibbles says:

I LOLed when I read this. There is no way TIME should expect anyone to take this list or their magazine seriously when they name Pippa and Waity as the most influential people in the world. A good number of the folks named on this list are wealthy celebrities, nothing more. They have not done anything positive for the greater good. The only thing the Middletons might “influence” is fashion because many women want to wear anything that a famous person wears. Also, history really does repeat itself. These two are the modern day Boleyn sisters.

  9. Agnes says:

i mean, these women don’t do anything… what do they influence? numbers of sales of shoes? it’s sort of insulting to the other people on the list, like cecille richards, the CEO of planned parenthood. then again, chelsea handler is on the list, so it seems to be a hodgepodge.

  10. CC says:

I didn’t know TIME was into comedy or sarcasm.

  11. Fyofeelings says:

They did the voting at some highschool so obvious by the people they chose.

  12. lili says:

They are soooo BLAHHHH. Really, give me a break…

  13. HoustonGrl says:

Waity and her orange sister? That’s an issue i WON’T be reading…oh wait, I don’t read TIME anyway.

  14. Mia says:

I like the old pics of Kate. I forgot she had a healthy, rounder face at one point. She looks alot happier in those photos

  15. ANGELIC 20 says:

i just don’t get americans obsession with theses girls? i am asina and thought americans actually value hard work, what you achieve on your merit ?is this the land of dreams that is famous around the world? what exactly are they influencing? does anyone remember the causes she supported (like aids supported by diana) ,did she start any fashion trend specifically?, is she discussing child abuse ,domestic violence, slavery, or doing anything of substance with her charities ?what exactly is she influencing other than how to take women back 100 years?just for curiosity on what number and category is she in? and is kim k is also in the list because she is at least inspiring wannabe reality stars or trashy celebrities and looks like doing more than pippa and kate(work wise )

    • Susannah says:

Pippa and Kate are kin to the Kardashian sisters. All we need now is a sex tape and then the press can dub them official fame whores of the British empire!!! Instead of a crown, Pippa will have a chastity belt bestowed upon her.

  16. Amelia says:

I’m going to guess most of the people on this site are American – you think you’ve got the Middies bad? The stupid rags in GB seem to think they’re all we want to hear about!! *rips up Daily Mail*
I blame the Olympics. I think either K or P Middy is an ambassador for it. I wouldn’t mind the coverage so much if they actually got off their arses and did something!!! A solid uni degree … naaah. I’ll just wait for my prince to propose and sweep me off my feet – 8 years later.

    • Trillion says:

I’m American and from what I can tell, nobody gives a rat’s a** about these two. I never hear anyone ever mention their names and the only place I ever see them discussed is here on CB. It seems like there’s some kind of PR machine trying really hard to make them matter, but they simply don’t. I think it’s because Diana was so popular and the media would like to see something like that happen again. Just a hunch.

  17. Eener says:

Urgh, they’ve turned mediocrity into a laudable trait, shame on Time!

  18. Luise says:

I can’t stand any of those Middletons.

  19. sup says:

really? pipa? i mean i get the duchess, not saying she’s influential but she is a royal now, and i know these lists are ballooney but you have to ask, really.

  20. angelic 20 says:

So they are influential because one married a rich man and second one got a bum ? And also because they don’t speak? seriously is this is an actual American magazine right? No one in Asia givestheses girls any importance.

    • Susannah says:

There might be a lot of magazine covers of Duchess DoLittle but they don’t sell well. The royal family is keen to push Katy on the public because their future is uncertain with QE2’s reign coming to an end. Some Brits want the monarchy to be dissolved. Press is heavy to gain US support.
Sorry, but Yankees aren’t so keen on British royalty. Just ask George III.

    • mimi says:

      Hear hear

    • kibbles says:

Exactly. The Asian media didn’t even give that much attention to the Royals during the wedding compared to the US. For some reason, the media elite in the US have always been obsessed with royalty, especially British royalty. Probably because of race and ethnicity as most Americans can trace their ancestry back to Britain. If some of the top 1% of the country had it their way, the US would have a monarchy to dote on 24/7. It is just a sick obsession with wealth, power, and aristocracy. I went to private school and a top university. MANY of the Americans there were Anglophiles. I as well love English history and literature and my boyfriend is British. However, some of these people took things over the top. They worshiped the British aristocracy and felt they were above everyone if they studied or lived in London. I guess they could be compared to a snob like Gwyneth Paltrow who thinks she is more cultured for being married to a Brit and living in London.

  21. molly says:

Actually, what Kate wears doesnt sell out. She wears “last seasons” clothes so by the time she wears them, they already have sold out without her influence. Its just that the press makes it seem like it was all her. There are a few exceptions, but most people dont exactly run out to the store to buy something that one of these girls wore. If you dont think thats true, just look up some of her clothes that she wears in the future and you will see that it was sold out before she wore it or the store puts it back on the website(so you know who its by) and it says its sold out but it had been for weeks.

    • Sachi says:

There was also a book about her and William that came out here in the UK around the time of their wedding, but didn’t sell well. It was reduced by half in the bookstores because nobody was buying it.

I don’t think business owners actually sold much with their Will&Kate souvenirs.

My sister told me that the DVDs of their wedding is only $5 in her city in Canada and the shelves were full of it, untouched.

Nobody was buying any “memento” of William and Kate.

Kate Middleton on magazine covers also doesn’t sell. The media blows her up to be this super-popular style icon, next Diana, most beautiful woman in the world, most famous person in the world right now…but nobody is actually paying any attention.

      http://www.popeater.com/2010/12/01/kate-middleton-magazine-sales/

      Her face doesn’t move copies.

It’s just the media who keeps on building her up and exaggerates her supposed influenced on the world.

Even here in England, only the tabloids (the Daily Fail, as my co-workers call the DM) and monarchist papers pay attention to Kate.

Many people here are wise to her and her family’s schemes. They’re not blinded to the drivel that American media is trying so hard to sell about Kate and Pippa.

      • Susannah says:

Sachi, I don’t know why the American mags are writing about her. No one is interested. Most people don’t know who she is.
She has been on the news recently with negative comments (Mustique and now Pippa’s romp through Neverland). I honestly don’t know why she is in the US press unless someone BIG is pulling strings behind the curtains.

  22. JulieM says:

Waity and Pippy influential? This is a joke, right?

  23. Jane says:

Pippa is always in the magazines (I have no idea why its usually rubbish). But like her or not she is. This means she must be some what influential or else why does she get all this coverage. If her face can sell magazines she’s making an influence.

The Duchess of Cambridge is influential! Maybe not so much in the US but certainly in the UK. The royal Wedding had a massive influence. Sure it will fade but she is relevant for this year at least! Again she never gets her face free from tons of woman’s mags. What she wears, if she wears it twice, what her facials are and her weight are constantly being written about and read everywhere. Oh and she is also the future Queen consort of England so you know that may be a little bit influential.

They aren’t like the Kardashians. The institution they have been elevated into means they aren’t famous for nothing. Though some may not understand the attachment many have to it or in fact detest it, the Royal family goes back so far in History it is influential on it’s own. If your apart of it or near it your bound to have some of this light shone on you.

    Deal with it y’all.

    • Trillion says:

      …or just continue not caring.

    • Henry says:

uh… you sound like a fan of those two. hence all the justifications as to why they are “influential”.

the rest of us in the majority don’t think they are influential and we don’t care either.

    • GoodCapon says:

Yet another comparison with the Kardashians!

I’m sure you didn’t mean it but it’s a bad idea to keep on comparing the Kardashians with the Middletons. To be compared with the lowest-of-the-low Kardashians is not exactly a crowning achievement.

By the way, the Middletons are just as déclassé as their American counterparts.

      • angelic 20 says:

I do not agree Jane, what exactly royal wedding influenced other than a show, her weight should not have am influence as it it’s not healthy, and being on covers of magazines well Kim k, teen mom, Jersey shore crowds are allon magazine covers are you saying they all should be influential ? America already have there share of really, worthless celebrities and it looks like people or magazines still gave appetite for more that’s why they are putting pippa and Kate aon this list.

  24. Lia says:

We rarely see Kate with her hair up. It looks so much better that way.

  25. pippy longstein says:

I think both Middleton women are pretty! Kate has a more classical beauty, and then Pippa is more ethereal or exotic. Both have an olive tone to their skin, I read they have Jewish blood on the mum’s side.
