Naomi Campbell to be the “supermodel judge” on a new reality show: horrible idea?

Somebody’s going to get a bejeweled phone right in the kisser! And it will be preserved in all its glory on reality television. Yes, mega-diva Naomi Campbell is set to STAR in a new Oxygen reality series called The Face. Naomi’s role in the show will be as one of three “supermodel coaches” – although Naomi is the only one who has been cast as of yet. Seriously, what self-respecting supermodel is going to sign on to play second-fiddle to Naomi’s unchecked ego and violent tendencies? They should call this show Who Wants to Be the Victim of a Felony Assault? Or The Face… That Is About To Get Smacked.

The NBCUniversal-owned cable network has tapped Naomi Campbell to star in The Face, a reality competition revolving around teams of models going head-to-head to become the spokesperson for a national brand.

Campbell will serve as one of three supermodel coaches, responsible for molding, nurturing and transforming contestants similar to another NBCUni property, The Voice. Campbell and the two other yet-to-be announced coaches will select their contenstants from a worldwide search before guiding them through weekly assignments.

“The Face is a fresh new series that delivers all the elements our audience craves: fashion, beauty and drama,” said Rod Aissa, senior vp original programming and development and Oxygen Media. “Oxygen has been looking for the next ideation in the modeling genre and this project delivers it.”

The Face comes as the female-skewing network has committed to increasing its original programming by 50 percent and joins the network that has been home to Tyra Banks’ America’s Next Top Model.

For her part, the series marks Campbell’s latest small-screen gig, following guest spots on scripted series including The Cosby Show and New York Undercover.

The Face, which does not yet have a premiere date, hails from Shine Media, producers of The Biggest Loser and Tabatha Takes Over, among other properties.

The Oxygen order comes 10 days after the CW’s flagship Top Model franchise saw the departure of three longtime faces in Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander, who have been with the fashion series since its early days.

ANTM has been a valuable unscripted property for the network that has struggled with the reality genre. The series premiered earlier this year to a dismal 0.6 demo rating, down 45 percent year-over-year.

There’s another aspect to this, of course – Naomi has watched her contemporaries – Heidi Klum, Elle Macpherson, Tyra Banks, etc – find new careers on these reality shows. Naomi is one of the few supermodels from the 1980s who still regularly appears on magazine covers – just AS A MODEL. I feel like this is Naomi crying “uncle” – she wants what the other girls have. Another layer to her career.

And yet another layer – what happened to living in Moscow with her still-married fiancé? Did that not pan out the way Naomi was hoping? Will her relationship with Vladimir Doronin survive if Naomi has to be in LA or NYC for six months at a time?

      FORE!!!!

      Wish Janice Dickenson to be one of the other judges. That ride would be so crazy, it could be labelled the “Hunger Games – may the vicious skinniest bitch win!”

  3. Anon says:

    She is the standard of beauty for many of us in the world. She is not nice; displays bratty behaviour like many of her peers ; but being perfect has never been a requirement in wealth creation. Since I do not have to live with Ms Campbell; I can appreciate the beautiful images of her especially in the age of plastic surgery.

    • carrie says:

      her russian married billionnaire is one of Leo Dicaprio’s best friend so his charms may be real

    Naomi Campbell + nuturing.. yeah I don’t think so..

  7. Elvynn says:

    Euh… She is one of the head of Russian’s Interview magazine. So she is working and acclaimed in another side than being a model. Don’t try to shame her and pass her for something she isn’t!
    Also she is the face of some charity organisations. She isn’t just some angry model. Everybody has many layers in their personnality.

  8. Sumodo1 says:

    I will watch it: I want to be in front of the tv for Nasty Naomi’s first hissy fit

  9. Eleonor says:

    Queenbitch herself? It’s going to be epic.

  10. Aud says:

    She is beginning to show her age. Not in a bad way, but in a way that says that she’s been everywhere and done everything.
    World weary.

  11. Alexis says:

    Naomi is a far better MODEL than Tyra or Heidi, although the other two seem like nicer human beings. Naomi is probably among the top ten supermodels of all time; even if you disagree with me on the rankings, she’s definitely up there. So young models who are serious about becoming editorial would be very lucky to have the opportunity to learn from her. Let’s be honest, learning to model from Tyra or Heidi is pretty much like learning from Brooklyn Decker or Kate Upton in 10 years. (Although the comparison makes me sad, what happened to having distinctly beautiful faces like Tyra and Heidi have?)

    Finally, NC still gets work and she’s managed to stay in a relationship for a while, so despite her public image she is probably difficult, but not impossible to work with.

    Love your titles for the show, Kaiser! My first thought was “I hope they confiscate all the cell phones within her reach.”

  13. Nev says:

    what she wants she will get….hahahahaha

    LOVE IT!

    go on Omi.

  14. tru tru says:

    I hope Naomi brings it!

    could this be the reason that Ty-Ty is revamping her show, LOL

    she is still not over being “bullied” by Naomi.. Tyra’s show is boring now!

    Naomi hopefully will play nicely.

  15. truetalk says:

    Naomi can never play nice but i think she’ll be interesting to watch like Simon Cowell; brutally honest. Or maybe just brutal!, haha!.This is going to be such fun!

    ITA alexis and sumodo1 as someone that lived through the 80s/90s supermodel period Naomi along with Linda,cindy,christy,yasmeen, etc. were sights to behold. DOn’t forget Amber Valetta along with Shalom;
    As I have read and understand, in the wake of KateMoss and the waifs the fashion industry turned on the supers and went (and remain) anorexic east european etc.;
    In addition, with conglomerates running fashion, publishing, entertainment, models were pushed off the covers and the mags were/and are used as marketing extension for hollywood et al.;
    One most also take into account that dreadful ANne wintour is absorbed in celebrity, not fashion, these and other reasons well known are why we don’t see beauties like Naomi anymore on covers, and beyonce is nothing compared to Naomi in her prime (check Naomi out on youtube); fashionistas worldwide have created a virtual fashion archive on youtube where you can view real beauties on the catwalk and in eds.

  17. Mi says:

    Naomi as a “supermodel coach” woold be eso great but Naomi combined with Janice would be epic now we only need the “nice” one and we have a great set.

  18. gg says:

    I can’t see it. She’s too much of a crazy bitch.

  19. Skinnybetch says:

    She gives great bitch face in pictures!

  20. crtb says:

    Is she the only one (of the super models) that has never been married and has no children? I was just wondering. She’s wasted too much time and her youth on a man who is never going to marry her.

  21. sup says:

    that’s exactly why they cast her… she has major anger management issues. i think it’s stupid trying to lure in the viewers by scandal. ratings-wise it might be a clever move, yet still risky because people might be terribly turned off of watching a belligerent person all the time. that one time when tyra lost it was the reason why her personality remains disliked. imagine that happening every episode. oy vey.
