Florence Welch in Alex McQueen at the Met Gala: whimsical or weird?

Florence Welch

Florence Welch (the British singer who fronts Florence + the Machine), went for the unusual at last night’s Met Gala. She wore an extremely embroidered (flowers?), tiered, beige Alexander McQueen gown and accessorized with matching sandals with chunky heels and a matching clutch. Overall, the dress really swallows her up, but Florence is clearly having fun with it.

I have to admire Florence’s chutzpah on the red carpet. Still, this dress looks like an upside-down lampshade, and I’m feeling terrible hints of Marchesa in the upper bodice area. That transparent stuff around the boobs? Not flattering at all.

For such a massive and complicated dress, Florence did well by styling her hair with a simple, braided updo that aims to add some much needed balance to the overall picture which is … a fluffy lampshade.

Florence’s makeup appears about the same as it usually does — moderate eyeliner, harsh blush, dark red lips, and pale foundation. This look is part of her image, but she could’ve gone a bit softer for the occasion.

Still can’t believe that this chick is only 25 years old

    • Aiobhan says:

Yeah….. I refuse to believe that as well. The dress is ok. There were better dresses that Sarah could have chosen for Florence. I guess Sarah wanted to focus solely on Cate and let Florence have whatever she wanted.

    • Katren says:

WHAT!!! I would have guessed early 40s! Her makeup is terrible.

I don’t even want to mention the dress as its clearly heinous but I just can’t believe this exists. Whoever designed that should never be allowed to dress someone again!

      • HotPockets says:

25! What?!?!?!?!?! I would have guessed 45, but never 25 or even 35. Also, I think her makeup is by far the worse part of this look, it looks like Halloween ghost makeup.Florence, Carey Mulligan, Dunst and Beyonce have been the worst of the worst for me with this GALA.

      • LAK says:

@Katren – i guess McQueen better shut up shop then.

      • Katren says:

        @LAK yep guess so!

    • claire says:

HA! Reallly?! I thought she was late 40s. Holy crap.

      • OriginalTiffany says:

OMG! I am shocked. I had no idea. She looks older than my 43 by a lot. 25?
        Mind blown…

    • Day says:

Of course, the first comment would be exactly what I was thinking. No way in hell is she in her 20s. I knew I couldn’t have been the only one thinking it.

      • somali princess says:

Its a man that’s why she looks older and rough. Men who want to be females will always look rough and slightly older

    • Kellie says:

I KNOW! She looks way older than 25 but I adore her music 🙂

    • Isabel says:

25? WOOW! It thought mid-40ies, and I’m not kidding or trying to be mean. wth.. didn’t see that one coming!

    • Kristen says:

Yeah, there’s no way that she’s only 25. Even if she’s one of those people who looks older than they are, she’s still at least 30 and she looks 35+. She’s gorgeous, but no way is she 25.

    • Amanda G says:

This is exactly what I was thinking!

  2. Franny says:

I saw florence live a few weeks ago…she is stunning in person. I feel she had also lost some weight in the past 2 years, so I wonder why she is covering up her amazing figure

    • Hip-ster says:

I came on the comments just to write this but see you already have. I always thought she was *meh* looks wise, but seeing her at Coachella showed her true beauty. She was captivating.

    • RocketMerry says:

Pictures not always do justice to beautiful women.
I often notice this with good looking people who have hard hedges in their faces. It can make for amazing videos but not so amazing pictures, unless the person learns how to work her/his angles.

Looks like Florence is in this category too. She’s so fun and unconventional, I love her!

    • kazoo says:

I’m seeing her tonight! So excited! I hope she wears some crazy stuff like this on stage. LOL

  3. Jordan says:

Since it’s Florence Welch, she can pull this look off where it would be weird on anyone else. However, her make-up is horrible. Why did she put the pasty foundation on? Trying to look like a vampire? You can tell it’s make-up b/c the back of her neck and shoulders are diff. color.

    • Maguita says:

See, I find that kind of unfair.

I was watching live yesterday, and when I saw her arrive, with all those flashlights making her hair look darker, I thought to myself “Oh no! Colbie Smolders (sp? chick from HIMYM) is again, very badly dressed. Turns out, it’s Florence, from Florence+The Machine, and apparently, it’s genius on her.

Even her “Heidi” braid is awful. Her shoes look like white beach summer sandals, that she super glued white ribbons on.

  4. weak says:

No! Surely you mean 45 years old??!!

  5. QQ says:

Flo Is The Moth Queen!! I love it so Much

Besides the fact that she can do No Wrong to me, I also think The MET is not about what we would wear to the Golden Globes, This is about what supercrazy rich Fashion Types would Wear to one up each other+Excellent Tailoring, Esoteric, Line Crossing type of stuff

    • arock says:

totally agree. this event begs for something more avant garde and orginal. so many confuse this with a time to wear something they couldnt fit into the limo at the VMA’s (bey-bey, im looking at you.0

the dress is true to her and this event. awesome.

      • QQ says:

YES You feel me!! in the spirit of what it is, and what is celebrating and Her IT WORKS

  6. Chowder says:

I don’t know why but it reminds me christmas tree.

  7. Vicky says:

    There is the chandelier!

  8. Alexis says:

She looks like a 40 year old tranny. Her face looks very masuculine to me.

  9. marie says:

on anyone else I would think its crap, but for her-I like it

  10. poppy says:

change the bottom to pants it would totally be an outfit charro would wear. those sleeves+cape -ugh.

  11. Kaiser says:

This is just awful. She’s right up there with Beyonce for one of the worst looks of the night. It’s doing horrible things to her boobs.

  12. Darlene says:

You call that “harsh blush?” LOL!

Regardless, she looks awful. Awful dress, awful styling.

  13. Lizzie says:

She looks amazing. This is the MET! You need a costume, something with edge. And its Sarah Burton, McQueen isn’t going to give out something like this to anyone! I mean….there were a lot of budget celebrities there (*cough Jessica Alba and Eva Mendes) wearing bland dresses.
Anna Wintour would much rather something spectacular and edgy than something beautiful and bland.

  14. AudreyS says:

If you’re gonna go for it, this is the way to do it! She wears it well.

  15. Sofie says:

    This is pretty terrible.

Props for ‘different’ I guess, but this really doesn’t look nice.

I like the braid accent in her hair but the bangs don’t flatter.

  16. MollyB says:

I loved it! It’s the Met, the point of it is a crazy costume and she has it. I would spin in that all night long like a six year old.

  17. Jenna says:

    It’s horrible, but it’s Florence.

  18. original almond says:

This woman absolutely cannot be 25 years old. The dress is ten kinds of awful.

  19. lw says:

Florence is not nearly the fashion girl she thinks she is. I appreciate that she is never boring. But she’s also never lovely either. And unlike Tilda or even Bjork, I just don’t think she can pull off the looks she tries.

  20. Stubbylove says:

I like Florence’s music and her fashion risk-taking – but – this is awful – she reminds me of Zelda, the mom’s sister with spina bifida from Pet Sematary.

  21. Tiffany says:

If she is 25, I got an island I can sell you in Kansas, for real.

  22. Monkey Jim says:

She always brings to mind a 50 year old man in drag

  23. ladybert62 says:

    Horrible dress.

  24. TheOriginalKitten says:

Wiki says she was born in ’86…wow..I love her so but I never would have thought she was only 25. Thought she was mid-to-late 30s. I hate this dress but can I just say she’s amazing? She has the voice of an angel.

  25. Agnes says:

    ugh.

  26. original kate says:

i think it works on her. i’m not sure why, but it does. she is so talented, so maybe in my head that justifies the strange fashion choices. i’ve seen F&TM live twice and they kill.

  27. TheOriginalVictoria says:

We can finally put Bjork’s Swan Dress to rest because we have a new winner for WTF Were They Thinking Champ of all time?

  28. Bee says:

This dress is awful. She could’ve scored points for makeup had she either chose the right shade of foundation or taken that uber pale shade all over the exposed areas of her body.

  29. Hope says:

She looks like a hurricane of dandelion puff.

  30. layla says:

Florence is AMAZING… and this is the MET GALA people.

I would take a MILLION wtf? type dresses like this over another boring as hell, trying to look sexy fashion forward lame starlet dress like so many others.

Florence is an artist. And this is a performance. At a COSTUME GALA. This isn’t the Oscar or the Golden Globes and people seem to forget that.

  31. Mourning the Death of Music says:

There are so many shades of wrong with this entire ensemble.

  32. I’m watching her streaming live from Radio City Music Hall on Fuse.

I see her and always think “it’s Florence… whatever.”

  33. lola lola says:

Everything this woman wears, wears her instead. Good God woman, take control of your clothing choices!

  34. Beregorl says:

I’m not a big fan of these artistic-hip-indie chicks, but Florence’s AWESOME. At first I couldn’t believe either that she’s three years younger than me, for a long time I thought she was in her late 30’s (and that was a very polite guess).

But then I googled her older videos and I realized that she two-three years ago she’d looked MUCH more youthful. (Maybe because she’d had some baby fat on her face.)

Unfortunately Florence has very sharp features, and they make her get old very quickly. But she’s still lovely and fresh when she’s singing live. 🙂
