Rosie O’Donnell thinks the argument with Elisabeth on The View was planned

Rosie O’Donnell was on “The Today Show” this morning promoting her new variety show, “Rosie Live,” which premieres Wednesday night at 8pm on NBC. She was inevitably asked about the rekindled feud with Barbara Walters, in which Walters said she resented O’Donnell’s recent statement that there was no camaraderie backstage at The View and suggested that O’Donnell mentioned it for publicity. Walters didn’t refer to O’Donnell by name when she criticized her on air and just said it was someone who had left the show, who she called “lady” in a harsh tone.

According to O’Donnell, her comments about the View just kind of slipped out.

“When you do like 60 interviews in an hour, and every reporter asks you about the View… I do the best that I can. I tell the truth as much as I can with caring about other people’s feelings. You don’t hear the question that the reporter posed. All you hear is the answer…

“‘Are the women really friends? Do you hang out together?’…

“I’m not saying they hate each other, but they’re not hanging out on the weekend.”

Rosie said she admires Barbara and feels bad that she hurt her. She called her a mother figure. She said she doesn’t regret talking about it because “it’s part of my life experience.”

After the big argument with Elisabeth, relationships changed
According to Rosie the day of the big split screen blow out with Elisabeth Hasselbeck in May, 2007 really changed the dynamic on the show. She said “if you watch back there was a lot of camaraderie between us all before that day.”

She said she never meant to hurt anyone and that “I did the best I could for 9 months [on The View] and when it was time to go I left.”

Rosie said she committed to “The View” for one year, and that after the Donald Trump feud she knew she wasn’t going to sign another contract, and said Walters was aware of that. She had about 2-3 more weeks left on the show when she had the big argument with Hasselbeck.

Rosie thinks the split screen argument was planned
Rosie suggested that the producers were trying to milk her argument with Elisabeth for all it was worth:

“The split screen day was tough for me. You know the director, Mark Gentile, takes a long time to just get a single of anything. Do you think that was not planned? Have they ever used a split screen before? Or since?”

Sent Barbara Walters an e-mail saying she never called her a liar
Rosie said she sent Barbara Walters an e-mail before the article in which she said there was no camaraderie backstage was published in the LA Times. She told her she loved her and wanted to make it clear that she never called her a liar about the show. Walters never responded to her other than to call her out on air. Rosie said she loved her, but that love and relationships are complicated.

Update: Here are two promos sent to us by NBC for Rosie’s new show, “Rosie Live”. It looks fun.

Rosie takes questions from an audience of press who doesn’t know who she is:

Yeah, I think Babs overreacted. If saying “I’m not saying they hate each other, but they’re not hanging out on the weekend” is the most scandalous thing Rosie’s ever said, people need to get a collective grip.

  2. GimmeABreak says:

Rosie, Rosie, Rosie…poor thing. You just can’t get out of your own way, can you?

  3. Syko says:

Agreed, Kaiser. I think most people’s working relationships are like what Rosie described. I know that although I like most of my coworkers, some of them very much, I don’t see them outside of work except the occasional obligatory firm party.

    ZOMFG! I just defended Rosie!

    Kill me now.

  4. mojoman says:

Oh FFS, get over it already and move on woman! she can say “no comment” to the interviewer rather than keep rehashing it over and over again.. 🙄

  5. aleach says:

i kinda like rosie (i know…i know…) and id much rather listen to her than obnoxious hasselback

  6. Sickitten says:

Like it or not, Rosie is entertaining and has earned her place in the spotlight.

  7. Ron says:

Please Rosie–vow publicly to never speak of this incident ever again and let it go–the more you talk about it in any terms the longer it’s legs.

  8. velvet elvis says:

Rosie has more charisma and star power than any of those chicks on The View…Babs included.

  9. girladvenger says:

I’m glad Rosie cleared up her side of the story and I blamed Babs for going on the air and restarting this feud. She’s suppose to be this great reporter but she doesn’t call Rosie to confirmed her statement.

She would if she wanted to stop this…but Babs is a business women fisrt and this was great publicity for her show.

  10. Holly says:

I really think Rosie does her best. At least she keeps it real. Barbara didn’t even so much as email her back, just went straight to the air with it. Who needs to move on, again?

  11. vdantev says:

I have bridge in New York up for sale if you media dupes are interested.

  12. lanette says:

if i were barbara i wouldn’t have said a word about it because it is really just what Rosie wants. she likes to take shots at the women of the View.

when rosie was on the show she argued w/elisabeth on a regular basis,i mean i don’t agree with elizabeth on much but in this country she has the right to voice her opinions…just as much as Rosie does.

Like I said, Barbara should not even bother with this chick…it’s not worth it.

  13. yadira says:

I used to like Rosie until she opened her big mouth a few years back and hasn’t learned to shut it to this day.

The View sucks, it is such a boring, pointless show!

  14. Ter says:

She might have a point, but did the show know that Rosey, as resident bully, would run to victimhood in two seconds flat the way she did that morning when Elisabeth dared to FINALLY defend herself? It was like watching the dumb schoolyard bully being called out by the nerd kid and getting their butt kicked.
And yes, vandtev, I know what a publicity ploy this is. RATINGS, RATINGS, RATINGS – BUZZ, BUZZ, BUZZ!

  15. Shay says:

I think Babs did Debbie and Star wrong. I knew Rosie wouldn’t be able to contain herself and she would learn how flippant Babs can be.

  16. DLR says:

i noticed whenever elisabeth has a tiff with someone like whoopi, joy, or sherri there is no split-screen. hmmm, most curious…

  17. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
