Selena Gomez’s new ombre hair extensions: cute or way too much hair?

Selena Gomez

Here are some photos of Selena Gomez promoting her role in Hotel Transylvania, in which she voices the character of 118-year-old Mavis. As you can see, Selena’s hair appears dramatically longer due to some new extensions, and it looks like she’s lightened up her locks as well. So how does it look now? Honestly, I liked her hair better with its natural color, and I’m not crazy in general about extensions, which seems like an easy (albeit expensive) way to cheat one’s way to instantly longer hair. The effect with Selena is dry-looking locks, but this is all in the name of a film role, as she explains below:

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez loves her lengthy locks!

The 19-year-old Spring Breakers actress rejoined the Rapunzel-like hair club with the addition of long, ombre hair extensions, which she showed off during Hotel Transylvania‘s press day in Culver City, Calif. on Monday.

After taking out her waist-length extensions in early June, the starlet sported a shoulder-length style at several red carpet events, including the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, Canada (her boyfriend’s, Justin Bieber, stomping grounds) on June 17.

“Spring Breakers is done now hair’s done for the next movie!” she posted to her Instagram account on April 2 after adding length to hair at West Hollywood’s Nine Zero One salon.

While Gomez has been going long, more than one Hollywood beauty has been going under the chopping block. Portia de Rossi debuted a chin-length crop in early June, Jennifer Lopez debuted a frizzy set of much-shorter curls last week and on Friday, Teri Hatcher showed off her new bob hairstyle at an event in L.A.

Presumably, Selena has undergone this relatively dramatic change for a new movie, and her IMDb page would point towards Getaway, which is an action/crime movie that just started filming and stars Ethan Hawke and Jon Voight. Strange, right? Well, Selena’s trying to change up her image, but considering that she plays the role of “The Kid,” we’ll see about that.

Seriously, she looks like she’s 14 years old. That close-up of her face looks SO young! She’s very pretty, though. Good luck on growing up her image..it didn’t work for Hilary Duff, so maybe she should stick to music?

    • Amelia says:

Some people are just destined to look young forever. One of my roomies is 25 and she still gets actively turned away from clubs and bars until she cracks out the ID. Even then someone thought it was fake (just to clarify, our drinking age is 18).
I reckon she should stick to what she’s good at. She’s made her bucks for looking young. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  2. marie says:

not really a fan of the extensions, she was cuter with the shorter length..

and why does JLo’s hair gotta be frizzy just because it’s curly? I saw the pictures of her shorter do and thought it looked great..

  3. Franny says:

Those are some of the most natural looking extensions I’ve ever seen – I wouldn’t know it was fake if you hadn’t said so! I guess Britney’s mess of a head always made me believe you couldn’t have good looking extensions.

  4. gee says:

I hate the long, extension look, but whatever.

Also, I think it’s smarter for someone like her or Hilary Duff (5 years ago) to play a ‘kid’ in a grownup movie than play a ‘grownup’ in a kid movie.

  5. Heebeegeebee says:

What about how unhappy she looks? She doesn’t want to be there.

  6. paola says:

i still stand by my own opinion: her face looks like a swollen potato with now longer hair.

  7. serena says:

I do like her like this. It’s good to change the hairstyle once in a while, and usually she’s boring hair-wise.

  8. Sabrine says:

Was her face always this round and puffy? She doesn’t really look like she’s put on weight, still a pretty girl though. And as previous poster said, she doesn’t look at all happy to be there!

  9. hateonit. says:

why does her face look so bloated now? she’s a beautiful girl but she looks way better without the extensions :/ now she looks 14 again *sigh*

  10. Cookie says:

She’s gorgeous but the ends of those extensions look really dry. They need a bit of leave in conditioner or something.

  11. TheOriginalKitten says:

It’s the camera angle that’s making her face look chubbier.
She’s a cute girl but does look really young. The extensions look nice but they always look like that when you firts get them done-they’ll be ratty in another few weeks.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I was going to say that was the reason too, but some of those shots are head-on (not from below, aiming upwards). I just think she tends to gain in her face easily.

  12. Bayarealife says:

If I may brag I Ombred the hell out of my extensions and it looked awesome. Got stopped on the street all the time. I wonder how I can do so well with YouTube and Sally’s beauty supply and these celebs are paying hundreds and thousands for decent looking hair.

    • vcamp says:

Please share how. I’ve been thinking about doing it with my actual hair that used to have red before. Now that’s almost grown out I’m itching for some new color. I’m morena (hispanic and tan) and have almost black long hair (at about my chest).

      • Bayarealife says:

I’m black so I was careful to get to a tone that complimented my complexion. The extensions were Malaysian so I didn’t think it would be an easy feat to lift. At wrk so can’t get extra detailed but I used bw2 powder and salon care 30 developer as well as 40 developer on the ends. Wouldn’t recommend the 40 on real hair though.

  13. blah blah says:

She doesn’t look bad in jeans but they have to keep her in heels or she looks like a 12 year old. Unfortunately, that cake has more personality than her and her mouth is TOO close to her nose which makes her face look like a genetic defect!!!

  14. Alexa says:

She’s adorable and I LOVE her shoes!

  15. ladybert62 says:

I dont like the extensions – they look heavy and like she will fall down if she tries to walk! ha ha

I do like the lighter hair color on her.

  16. Cathy says:

Meh, she looks ok. But I think she looks better with the shoulder length hair. She looks much younger now. I’d I D her to get into Chucky Cheese.

  17. Jaime says:

Squishy face, terrible bone structure. She won’t age well…

    • Isla says:

      +1

I do not find her cute at all.

She looks like a lollipop – HUGE blockhead, too-skinny body.

Her personality is meh as is her acting abilities.

  18. Natalina says:

It will prob make other young girls want hair extensions

  19. Aubra says:

Extensions/weaves shouldn’t LOOK “wiggy” nor like you’re wearing extensions. The purpose of them is to blend, not give away.

  20. Lairen says:

I have no idea what this movie is, but did anyone else think Rocky Horror with the promo pics in this piece?

  21. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I don’t wear extensions but let’s give it up for the Pangaea-sized cultural blind spot that calls the usage ‘cheating’! I 100 per cent don’t think anyone meant anything or that this isolated incident is even with the same area as things that are ‘important’, I’m just saying that the Olympics are being held in London, not Slippery Slope.

Why bother to bring it up? We’ve touched on an issue that has until very recently been the concern and domain of black women almost exclusively and Roots could’ve just as easily been a saga based upon black women’s hair as anything else.

Taken to its (hugely exaggerated and piss-taking) extreme, one can ask, ‘Do blondes really have more fun, or are brunettes bleaching and putting on an extroverted disposition to fool people into thinking they’re attractive?’ ‘That’s just stupid and overly sensitive’, one may think, but the false hair/false colour comparison is pretty even footing where the aesthetics of black hair are concerned.

I’m not saying that evil forces are plotting to drown Atlanta with stealth lye bombs, nor am I plotting an evil scheme in which the Whole Foods contingent would somehow be barred from making future purchases of ‘New England Flat Iron Blonde’ hair pigment, I’m just passing along some information that isn’t terribly related to this article, but…oh well.

I’m more concerned about the state of the girl’s upper lip than anyone’s hair.

    • NerdMomma says:

I always love your posts. I envision you as a university professor, taking a moment from your work toward social justice to see what’s up on Celebitchy 🙂

  22. Nina says:

If you’ve felt all the knots and lumps on another person’s scalp then you know extensions are pretty gross and unsexy… but I digress. Unfortunately, these make Selena look like she’s growing out a bad dye job, and can’t keep up with the maintenance.

  23. april says:

She’s very cute but she has such a small face and it makes her look very young. I do like the hair extensions. I think eventually Bieber will dump her since he has so many young girls after him, but she will find someone else quickly. She has a good personality and a really good figure.

  24. Ally says:

Yes, I do think it’s strange that we’re grossed out to find anyone else’s hair anywhere on any surface, but people are gluing it to their heads.

Leave the hair pieces to people who are unwell, and grow your own freakin’ hair.

There was a great report on this industry on French TV. Even if you don’t speak the language, the images are edifying. After the ad, about 5 minutes in:

  25. maggie says:

She is a bulimic. I am psychic.

  26. yo says:

she’s pretty and her legs are great, but i find the hype over her looks kinda weird. she has a very round chubby-kind of scrunched up-face and that throws me off a lot.
