Rihanna covers Bazaar, talks about love & pain: “I’m afraid of feeling that again”

While I’m getting a little tired of seeing Rihanna on magazine covers, she’s still managing to parcel out her media better than Lady “Over-Saturation” Gaga. Rihanna covers the August issue of Harper’s Bazaar, and these are some photos from the Bazaar pictorial. Surprisingly, I kind of like the shoot – it was done by photographer Camilla Akrans as opposed to Bazaar’s go-to Terry Richardson. So, small mercies. Some of these photos are the best I’ve seen Rihanna look in a year or so. The focus is actually on “beauty and style” in a low-key way, which works on Rihanna. As for the interview… Rihanna is just saying the same old crap:

Rihanna doesn’t fancy herself a rebel, at least when it comes to love. For Bazaar’s August cover story she opens up to Laura Brown over Italian food, and admits to being “rebellious through my music, through my fashion, tattoos, and my hair. I have been conservative in my love life… it’s pretty much nonexistent. If I come across someone who I find really cool, I’ll hang out. But the minute I find that we’re getting too close I just—I don’t let people in.”

However, the 24-year-old still racks up the drama in the tabloids with her infamous ex, Chris Brown. While she wanted to choose someone “shocking” to collaborate on the remix of her song “Birthday Cake,” she says she had no idea of the backlash it would cause. “The fans could have said, ‘We don’t want anything to do with it,'” she says. But she makes one concession: “I understood that people had every right to be concerned about it. But I didn’t see it that way because I’m in a different place.”

Rihanna tells Bazaar that she has yet to open up again in relationships, after being so badly hurt in the past. “When I was in love, I fell so hard. I was really, really, really in love. The way it made me feel was priceless. And in a blink of an eye my whole life changed. Everything that I knew was different. I never thought I’d feel that pain in my life. I’m afraid of feeling that again.”

Although she may be cautious in love, Rihanna continues to push the boundaries of personal style—the singer has recently stunned in everything from lowcut Armani dresses to slouchy Stella McCartney jumpsuits. At her shoot for Harper’s Bazaar, shot by Camilla Akrans, Rihanna glows in gowns by Tom Ford and Calvin Klein. And her body? Sleeker than ever. “I don’t know if there’s something going on with my body right now, but I’m eating everything in life!” she laughs. “I miss my ass. It just went away! I need a butt. I have an idea of one, but it’s not living up to its full potential right now.”

There is no doubt that Rihanna is living up to her potential—she has her prized “swagger” in spades. But despite all she has achieved, she is far from done. “I’m still in denial that I’ve proved that, so I have to continue,” she says. “I will not lose.”

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

I’ll give Rihanna credit for one thing – I think that for better and for worse, she opens herself to her public and to her fans. It’s a different kind of “accessible” because Rihanna dealt with some crazy sh-t, and she continues to deal with many issues. It’s messy and uncomfortable and aggravating and sometimes sad, but with Rihanna, what you see is what you get almost always. I think the girl has serious issues with men and sex and love, and I think she’s got issues with alcohol and addiction too. Still, at the end of the day… I’m kind of rooting for her.

    *gasp* she has clothes on?!

  2. QQ says:

Great pictorial, she look good in those neutrals and clean lines a la Halle Berry ( who tends to stick to that color scheme, period)

  3. mccoy says:

I am rooting for her too. Tired of all the train wreck young celebs. Whatever demons that are chasing her, she can’t outrun or drink and drug them away. Time to face your fears honey.

  4. Jenna says:

At this point, I’m just tired of Rihanna. I’ll root for someone else.

She does look S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G in those photos, and you’re right, it’s been awhile. In general though, she always comes off so immature.

  6. Sirsnarksalot says:

She maybe afraid to open up to real love but rumour has it that it hasn’t stopped her from passing it around to half the dudes in the biz. This girl reeks of low self esteem. I don’t like her music or her style but I hope she doesn’t go the way of Lindsay because I can see a parallel there.

its increasingly irritating for women to be judged on having casual sex while theyre single. she’s in her early 20’s. there are no parallels to lindsay lohan because she actually has talent and the drive to make things happen. lindsay lohan is entitled, sociopath, lazy and an all around bad person

Whoa, she enjoys having sex?! How dare she!

  7. David says:

    She has to many tat’s!

  8. Kola says:

    Well, she looks beautiful.

im a huge rihanna fan and i think she looks gorgeous in the photos. it’s really difficult to have people judge such personal things. i had a bf who physically attacked me. there were people who blamed me and speculated. i was mortified at having to tell people in my family and having other people find out. dealing with the cops was a whole nother level of humiliation. so basically i get tired of people judging how she handled her situation with chris brown. everyone isnt strong enough to break the grips immediately and everyone deals how theyre equipped to deal. a lot of her issues have to do with the pressure of the brand she is carrying while also healing from something that robs you of so much of your trust and naivety of life.

  10. Crystal says:

She looks so beautiful. Going back to black hair is one of the best things she’s done.

  11. Pat Dorty says:

She’s so full of s@@t. If she’s so afraid of pain then why did she run back to that little creep Chriss Brown? Heavy sigh; I’m so tired of pain…is that “Creepy Chriss Brown”?

    • Meanchick says:

I read speculations that she went back to him, but nothing more. She seems like the type that if they were together, she’d admit it and move on with her life and career. Take it down a bit, you don’t know what has happened. Too much venom for a rumor.

  12. thatttbitch says:

I’m not rooting for her…she used to be such a classy young lady …now she’s just trashy and vulgar and she does have low self esteem…”She had no idea of the back lash it would cause ” you sang a song with ur ex -boyfriend that put you in the hospital about oral sex with both of you singing about how you wanted to fuck each other …is she that dumb…I just can’t with her anymore

  13. Stormy says:

Her ass is really gone!wow, didn’t believe it.

  14. Lucy2 says:

Conservative in her love life? Yeah I don’t think so.
She can’t seem to decide what image to portray. Today it’s the sweet girl who got so hurt by love, and tomorrow she’ll be yelling she’s a rebel who does what she wants and doesn’t care.
I think she has a TON of issues. Good luck to her, but until she grows up and makes some changes in her life, it’s still going to be a mess.

  15. truetalk says:

I just saw her in Battleship;she did great

  16. Jill says:

Gorgeous. Love is hard. She just lost her Grandmother too. That is hard to take too.

  17. Jover says:

Enough with this talentless autotuned nitwit; she has nothing new to say because she’s just another programmed barely literate pop star. I want to see real models and fashion photography on mag covers – her management team must be really shelling out the cash/gifts/bribes to keep putting her on covers, etc.

  18. Aubra says:

It won’t be a day too soon when music serves this frog with a cease and desist.

  19. anti says:

    love her blue/black hair!

  20. Lindy says:

She looks amazing here–I just hope she can pull her sh!t together and not go off the rails. I know people say she’s not all that talented, but I think she makes some pretty damn fun music, and it would suck if she just parties or drugs herself to death.

  21. Jordan says:

She is such a beautiful girl. I wish she would stop with the tattoos though. I’m rooting for her too.

  22. Happy21 says:

I used to quite like her. I liked her music. I thought she was cute and fun. Then the Chris Brown thing happened and I paid attention to what she was going through and I felt for her. No woman, girl or even man deserves to be abused at the hands or the mouths of the person they are with.

I watched and I thought she was coming out of it really well and then something happened. I don’t know what it was. All of a sudden she became, loud, vulgar and unappealing. Her low self esteem was reflected in every photos she took, in everything she said and even in her music – which I believe really went down hill after her Rated R CD – I couldn’t watch her or listen to her anymore. Her voice was screechy and she sounded tone deaf and she just became insufferable.

I still want her to come out of this and succeed but I can’t watch or listen to her anymore while she figures her shit out. She needs to go away for awhile and regroup.

I don’t care what she does, I love Ri Ri
