Kellie Pickler on shaving her head: “one of the most beautiful moments of my life”

As you may know, country singer Kellie Pickler shaved her head in solidarity with her best friend, Summer Miller, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer at 35. Prior to Summer’s first chemotherapy session, Kellie went with her to shave their heads together. They documented the process in a video and series of photos they shared with Good Morning America. Kellie has been very low-key about this whole process. She did her first interview recently, with Ellen DeGeneres, and her segment airs today. Too Fab had a clip (above) in which you could see how personal this was for Kellie and how genuine she is about helping her friend. Kellie got choked up when talking about her grandmother passed away from cancer, just one day after she was diagnosed. Here’s the story from Too Fab. Kellie said she was with Summer for her first cancer treatment and that she’s doing well:

Kellie Pickler is bald and beautiful after shaving her head to support one of her best friends who was diagnosed with breast cancer — but she was very nervous about getting buzzed.

“I will be honest with you. I was a little nervous and she was too,” Pickler says in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. “We were both a little nervous, hope we don’t have some crazy birthmark or a wart or a mole!”

Despite their reservations, Kellie and Summer both still went through with it — and Kellie has no regrets.

“That is probably one of the most beautiful moments of my life. Just being able to do that with her,” she adds. “The last thing that you want for anyone that you love …is that you don’t want them to walk through the valley lone.”

She adds, “I think it’s important to have a cancer buddy.”

Pickler also gives an update on Summer, who just started chemo.

“She’s doing good,” Pickler says. “Of course it’s hard. It’s hard on your body. It’s hard on your mind. It’s not an easy thing to go through. But she’s a storing woman and she’s handled it with such grace.”

[From Too Fab]

Kellie explained that she thinks of Summer as her big sister, adding that “I don’t think blood makes a family.” She added later “it’s just hair, you know.”

I have to say I found Kellie so genuine and real, and that I admire what she did for her friend. She’s the kind of friend you need in a crisis, someone who will stand by you when you need them the most. Those type of friends are very rare.

Kellie is beautiful inside and out!

She seems like a very sweet person. I’m not a fan, but she’s playing a local fair I volunteer at at the end of the month. I’m excited to see her perform.

I hope she’s as professional as she is caring.

I think this is a lovely story, but I’m getting tired of it swirling all over the media…she’s on Ellen today. I did the same thing w/ a gal friend who shaved her head. No big deal. That’s what friendship is about. I just don’t really get why this story is still going on…just sayin’ but on the other hand, better a positive story swirling around than another Kardashian one.

I think its a good thing. It only brings more awareness to cancer and also helps bring down the stigma of going bald while going through this.
Any publicity to a disease as huge and devestating as cancer is good IMO.

I think it’s because that loyalty is rare in Hollywood. All talk, no action.

losing one’s hair during treatment from cancer is such a difficult thing i imagine. it’s a physical confirmation of the horrible disease. lending support to loved ones in whatever way helps is truly a selfless act. good for her…

Luckily, Pickler has a nicely-shaped head for this. I have a friend who did the same thing. It’s nice to see one of the “beautiful people” do it too (though Pickler’s always seemed kind anyway). We can hope she will start a mini-trend. I think this sort of thing is SO helpful to the cause. It starts one-on-one conversations.

I love stories like this one, what a courageous way to show love and support to your friend. Hats off to you Kellie.

It’s very sweet of her to support her friend. I feel pretty mean saying this but in that picture she looks like Jake Gyllenhaal in that movie Jarhead. Every time I look at this pic I think that!

These are the stories I wish there were more of…
Instead of Bynes and Lohan ones.

  9. Jess says:

I think they both look pretty hot with their shaved heads. Obviously there’s a bit of personal publicity going on here for Kellie, but if she’s raising awareness for cancer, and for how loved ones can be supportive, I think it’s overall really positive.

I think this story SHOULD be swirling around. This is much better to read about than more Lohan, Bynes, or Kardashian trash. It’s sad when people are “tired of” good stories that are worthy of sharing.

    • Bonfire Beach says:

+1. It’s sad when people tire of goodness.

It’s a nice story but I think people pretty savvy about this kind of thing. My first thought isn’t that she cares for her friend, but that she wants good publicity. I haven’t heard her name in years so it seems like it could be an attention getting stunt. I think that’s the problem people would have with it, but either way it’s nice she did something, even if her reasons may not be purely altruistic.

  11. Bonfire Beach says:

They look like real sisters! Very cute & sweet. LOVE this story!

  12. Jacq says:

I really wish this had gotten some more comments and attention. It is such a selfless act & she is a genuine friend. There aren’t enough people like her in the world.

How a person chooses to deal with the chemo-induced hairloss is a very personal thing.

Some people choose to deal with it right off the hop and shave their heads to make it easier. To me, that felt like giving in, and I let mine fall out naturally, which was just as sad, but felt better for me. I didn’t shave my head until after my last treatment (I’d still had a few hairs hanging on, I looked like Gollum, but whatever).

My closest friend also offered to shave her head in solidarity, but that would not have made me feel better either.

EVERY choice is worthy, I never quite understood why people seem to think it is more so if a person shaves their head, even though it is a wonderful gesture. And my friends were still my closest friends even though they kept every hair on their head.

  14. Jill says:

I commend her for this. This is the kind of friend I am and would want in my life.

I love this story and I am so glad it is getting the attention it deserves!
Kelly is an awesome human being inside and out. What she has done for the military alone is amazing. Her USO tours to the war zones have been so uplifting to the troops. She has even been given the great honor to ride back on an angel flight.
It is so great to see stories of a celebrity of this kind when there are all these selfish waste of human beings like Craken and Paris Hilton out there sucking up the universe. Bravo Summer for facing your hard battle with dignity and Bravo Kelly for being the friend she deserves!

  16. Misty Anderson says:

This is a heart warming thing Kelly done. But cant believe she let Ellen get a hold of her head..
    Ellen crazy love her show.
