Nicole Kidman talks about her “great regret” regarding the late Stanley Kubrick

Many people point to Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s decision to spend nearly two years of their lives working with Stanley Kubrick as one of the major “breaking points” in their marriage. In retrospect, we could argue that there are probably many, many other “breaking points” in the old Cruise-Kidman marriage (XENU!), but I remember clearly what a big deal it was that Tom basically took two years off from his Hollywood blockbuster career to focus on what would become Kubrick’s last film, Eyes Wide Shut. Rumors swarmed around the UK production – Tom and Nicole even sued the tabloids for reports that Kubrick needed to bring in some kind of sex coach to teach them intimacy. In the end, Eyes Wide Shut was a mediocre film (IMO), but Tom and Nicole never said a word against Kubrick, and both have cited the Kubrick experience as overwhelming great and educational. As Nicole promotes The Paperboy, she talked again about Kubrick, and her final regret about her friendship with him:

Nicole Kidman says a great regret of her career was failing to call director Stanley Kubrick the night before he died. Kidman swooped into the New York Film Festival Wednesday as recipient of its first-ever tribute, then returned to the Paris set of “Grace of Monaco.”

During a Q&A before a screening of her movie “The Paperboy”, she recalled meeting Kubrick for the first time with ex Tom Cruise.

“Tom and I went to his house and had dinner, and I remember I was nervous,” she said, adding she was ultimately “able to sit on the floor of his office . . . and be privy to so many things. It was like having a great, great teacher.”

But Kidman never realized “Eyes Wide Shut” would be Kubrick’s last film.

“I remember thinking [he] was frail, and . . . if I were more intuitive I would have realized that he was not well,” she said. “One of the worst things . . . was, I was going to call him [on Kubrick’s last night alive], and I didn’t. Instead I got a phone call [the next day] saying Stanley was dead. It was one of my great regrets that I didn’t call him that night.”

I do wonder how close she really was with Kubrick – I always got the impression that Kubrick was closer to men like Tom and Steven Spielberg. But really, Kubrick was so reclusive and private, we don’t have many ways of knowing who he was close to, even now, posthumously.

You know, we can yell and complain about Nicole’s crazy face these days, but her discussion of Kubrick is just a reminder (to me) that she has done a lot of incredible work with some of the great directors. I wish that Nicole would come back to us. But she’s too busy peeing on Zac Efron.

It’s that old chestnut again. We regret the things we *don’t* do, more than the things we do.
And I was feeling chirpy a minute ago.

  2. Aria says:

People trash her a lot and she’s a very good actress and seems such a nice lady in manners and all. I don’t a get a bitchy vibe from her or anything. She’s still pretty too.

    • Fudge you, I'm going to Guam! says:

      I agree.
I watched those pre Oscar sit down interviews with the nominees, and she was the most interesting one.
I found myself really listening to what she had to say about the industry and her acting process and everything.
Sure she was a little “twitchy” at times but I just assumed she’s an introverted person who was nervous.

      • Layale says:

Being mostly introverted myself, I also think that’s the case with her and not really that she’s bitchy. I could be wrong, though. So many people think she’s an ice queen. Maybe she is.

    • ssa says:

I saw her at a Starbucks in Nashville once and she was wearing no make up at all and she was still so pretty. She was very sweet also.

  3. Suzy (from Ontario, Canada) says:

Dislike that dress. The colours and the style on top do nothing for her. In fact, it makes her look overly large in the shoulders and chest (and not in a good way). Makes me think of Kathleen Turner as she started putting on too much weight.

  4. KellyinSeattle says:

Yikes….I’m glad I’m not a celebrity! Picture resurfacing of you ten years later, and what a dork outfit you’re wearing! We make fun of our own and others’ yearbook photos but sometimes don’t give celebs the break of letting them look badly sometimes. I think Nicole looks great.

  5. Talie says:

If you read that book Andrew Morton wrote about Tom Cruise…it’s pretty detailed how close Kubirck and Kidman got, so much so that Tom became jealous of the attention he was giving her and not him. Nicole has a reputation for connecting well with auteurs, so it’s not a surprise.

    • Roma says:

Yes but in the same book it seemed like Kubrick really humiliated Nicole with make her shoot sex scene after sex scene that was never going to be used.

I truly think shooting EWS was what split them. The whole thing was truly odd.

      • Jayna says:

It was definitely the beginning. And then is when Nicole’s career was going strong. She shot The Others and Moulin Rouge after that. Moulin Rouge was in Australia and she had the children with her. The split occurred not all that long after.

Scientology had nothing to do with their split because the ex COS said Scientology swooped in after they split hoping to bring Tom back in the fold and that Tom was basically out of COS before that.

Weird that I remember this, but I do remember her talking about finding herself in a Catholic church after Stanley died and how she felt at home there at that moment after so many years away. She even was quoted along the lines of “once a Catholic . . .” It seemed like only a few months later Tom dumped her. I always wondered if that was the tipping point.

Her Boootoxy face aside, Nicole takes chances and generally picks interesting roles. I gotta respect her for that. Now, Nicole, please go back to the dark red hair – and stay there!

  7. Allie May says:

Nicole has aged so much better than Tom. It’s especially evident in the picture of Tom on the cover of People magazine -how much Tom is suffering and what a victim he was of Katie Holmes. Poor Tom.

With such a biased cover that People has put forth, I will probably never buy another magazine of theirs again.

I read that Kubrick had a bit of a crush on Kidman. David Thomson’s book about her goes into some depth about how much Kubrick thought of her as an actress.

I think it’s great that she did THE PAPERBOY. It looks like a crazy over-the top performance and a lot of campy fun. I’ve always liked Kidman and I love that she does taken some real risks in the roles she’s done.

    • gg says:

She’s done some really great roles (and some insipid ones but I’ll give her a pass because I really like her). I started checking out older movies of hers and have enjoyed them a lot. The Others the Birth really stood out to me.

  9. Shelly says:

God, she and Tom are so beautiful in that first pic. She was flawless. She was always my favorite actress before she started messing with her lips. I still enjoy her in films, she is an amazing actress, but her lips always distract me. 🙁

    • Jayna says:

In that photo you liked she was already messing with her lips but in a good way. Her lips in her first movie with Tom Far Away were pencil thin. She began plumping them up just a little but still keeping the beautiful rosebud shape to her lips. Somewhere several years ago, maybe five, I can’t remember, she began blowing them up, losing the shape to her lips, just big, fat lips, and it was so distracting. It’s like these women get lipsdysmorphia, LOL. They lose all sight of what looks normal. It is nice to see that her lips are back to looking somewhat normal again.

      • Gabby says:

Actually Nicole and Tom’s first movie together was Days of Thunder, where they met. But whatev.

  10. Jillian says:

Has anyone else ever noticed how Nicole’s hands are always extremely red? They are in the first pic and I’ve seen them that way in her movies and on the red carpet.

    • Amelia says:

Could be Raynaud’s syndrome. I’ve got it also. In cold weather your fingers can go horribly red and sometimes purple, and swell up like 50 bees have stung you at once.

    • gg says:

Could be because she’s so pale. I have similar coloring (bluish white) and my palms and feet are generally bright pink compared to anybody with any medium or olive skin. I’m embarrassed to wear sandals because people stare at my pink toes. lol

  11. Suz says:

I believe she was closer to Kubrick than Cruise was. I think she does have a bond with the respected directors.

I stand behind my opinion that Kidman is a great actor. I believe that she actually lives for acting and that it is her consuming passion and always foremost on her mind.

I really wish she would go back to the purer red hair, though.

  12. Jordan says:

” I wish that Nicole would come back to us. ” –I don’t understand this…how has she changed? I could understand if she was doing cheesy rom-com after cheesy rom-com now, but Nicole has always chosen interesting roles, if not popular ones. People can make fun of her frozen features but she is one of the most interesting and talented actresses out there, and she gets a lot of respect from producers and directors it seems.

    • Jayna says:

She is a tremendous actress. She’s been bad in a few movies, but not many. I loved her in that Rabbit Hole movie last year. Excellent movie and acting.

She was brilliant in Moulin Rouge. She played farce, comedy, and drama all in one movie and pulled it off beautifully all the while it being a musical. A huge feat to pull off and work and she did it. And the movie was shot with so many closeups of Nicole and she was so beautiful. Loved her in Cold Mountain. I thought she was amazing in the Human Stain with Anthony Hopkins. She transforms into the character. Fur she was excellent. I didn’t like her in Birth. Wooden again for me and odd movie. But I give her credit. She does take risks.

The Others was a great movie and she has that timeless quality that can play roles like that but yet then play a role like in movie To Die For.

She lost me in Australia. Her lips were such a mess that it took away from her and her acting was wooden. I tried to watch a movie Margot at the Wedding, and her face was again a mess with her lips and the wig and I couldn’t get past it and never finished it. I was glad to see her in the Rabbit Hole movie looking like herself again.

Vivian Kubrick got in tight with CO$ and her step-family hasn’t heard from her since:

  14. midnightmoon says:

I wouldn’t say that first pic is the best of Nicole’s earlier, more natural photos, but that dark red plum color on her is so exquisite. The last few years it’s like her style mentor spends too much time-travel in the 80s. Not good. Aaaattt ALLLL. And a Scooby Doo ‘Hhuunngghh?!’ To the poster who is not gonna buy People mag anymore because they picked an unflattering photo of Tom. You have a right to your opinion and purchasing choices but surely you understand the gossip mag game? Maybe not…

  15. dcypher1 says:

Stanley kubrick was slightly autistic thats why he was such a recluse. He demanded nothing but pefection from his actors. Always demanded scenes to be shot over and over again. He stressed shelley duvall out so much while shooting the shinning he hair fell out. But I think all these traits just brought out the genius of his lifes work his movies. He is one of the best directirs of all time.

  16. Hm says:

Off-topic, but – great skin. Now that I’m older, I don’t care how fake it all is – I’ll have what she’s having! (I wish) lol

  17. danielle says:

Interesting. Of all Cruise’s relationships, I absolutely bought him and Kidman. She seemed crazy in love with him. Could’ve just been that she’s a VERY good actress tho, lol.

    • Gabby says:

I think Katie was crazy in love with him too (and she’s NOT that good of an actress!) I remember reading interviews with Penelope when they were together and she gushed about how attentive and sweet he was to her, but I didn’t get the sense that there was a lot of hot passion. He was definitely a career relationship for her to some extent (and it worked.)

  18. Kitty says:

Anything Kidman says should be treated with caution … so many of her past reflections don’t quite add up.

  19. Em says:

Why, after all this time, does this woman continue to reference Tom Cruise in her interviews. Some would say mentioning his name generates her publicity. Even though Kidman has remarried, she is still talking about Cruise, still trying to convince the public of their ‘alleged’ heterosexual marriage and ‘alleged’ failed fertility attempts, etc. It is highly suspicious and very disrespectful to Keith Urban and Katie Holmes.
