Gwen Stefani covers Nylon, laments the lack of importance of music award shows

This isn’t as sexy/exciting/offensive as yesterday’s No Doubt post (about their racist music video which seemed designed to offend Native Americans), but I still think this is noteworthy. Gwen Stefani covers the new issue of Nylon Mag, and at this point I do think we have to acknowledge that Gwen is tweaking and/or Botoxing, right? Before six months ago, I just thought Gwen was an ageless vampire who took care of herself, but at some point this year, I really just began to think that she’s doing something to her face. This pictorial just draws it out even more for me. Anyway, Gwen got the cover because she’s promoting No Doubt’s new album, and the guys in the band actually posed for a photo for the magazine. Some highlights from the interview:

Gwen Stefani on fame: “I’m telling you right now, being Number One or playing in a garage–they’re both super fun.”

On how she gets inspired: “I got all my favorite people that I work with [together] and we had a creative day. We basically all sat around with our art books and [magazine] tears and just put them up and did collages and tried to get a direction. We ended up not using anything, but it was really fun.”

On the evolving music world (the MTV VMAs included): “It used to have so much weight. People even paid attention to the categories! Now if you win one–I don’t even think anyone takes your picture. It’s like, whatever.”

She’s right about the music awards. I remember when the VMAs were actually a big deal, like they were the cool version of the Grammys. Now no one cares who wins a VMA and no one really cares who wins a Grammy either (if they ever did). As for everything else… I don’t even know. I feel like Gwen is trying to “prove” that she’s still the badass rocker grrl, but it just feels… dated…?

Half the people winning the awards now are vapid pop tarts who can’t sing. It’s so uninspired and boring, and the lengths they go to for attention is offensive to real musicians.

      this.

what passes for music these days is highly dependent on spectacle instead of talent.

    • Tilly says:

Agree. That said, it seems that many singers/bands lip sync during “live” performances. IMO, if you won’t sing live you can’t sing.

    • ol cranky says:

thank you. Back in the day, in order to have a recording contract you had to at least bring some talent (that could be heard on the record) to the studio

Their new album is a flop. Deal with it Gwen and move on. Nobody cares about No Doubt. It’s so ’90. She is so annoying lately.

    • Jenn says:

Actually I care. I love No Doubt and I love the new album. Lyric wise it reminds me of Return Of Saturn which was IMO one of thier best cds!! Speak for yourself!!

Apparently Jenn(K) feels very strongly about this issue

She looks good, who’s her doctor? I want to know for future reference

  4. Sisi says:

I thought she had a facelift or something a couple of years ago

    • Amanda says:

Seriously??!! At 43? I know she grew up a SoCal gal and was a swimmer, but she seems to have stopped the sunbathing at least a decade ago. I can’t believe anyone would have a facelift at 43. Believe me, as someone a year younger than Gwen and a former fellow sun worshipper, I have already had a couple of consults about my sagging face and I have been told repeatedly that I’m not ready for it yet…and my skin doesn’t look nearly as good as hers. I bet she gets regular laser treatments, facials, maybe some botox and fillers, but I think she looks great! She certainly doesn’t look over-done. I only wish I looked as good. 🙂

      • Sisi says:

mind you I’m not certain. Maybe I should’ve used a questionmark XD

      • Adrien says:

Facelift is still the gold standard but there are a lot of non-invasive procedures available. Back then people are avoiding looking pulled up so they opt for botox and fillers. Now very few people can tell if one had a facelift and that botox/fillers may actually make one look older. We associate them with mature people.

She looks awesome and usually sounds great on albums/songs but man she almost always sounds terrible live.

She needs to stick to endorsements. She’s the hottest 40+ woman out there.
(but I don’t like that cover)

  6. virginia5 says:

fyi I couldn’t get through their native american themed music video, the song was terrible lol.

  7. Sharon says:

She just does not age. Looks just like she did when No Doubt was HUGE in 1995 when I was a teenager. I def rocked out to them then, Now? Ugh their new music is absolutely horrible. Can we just bring back “Spiderwebs”?

  8. Suzie says:

I really think what they did with their video was a publicity grab. It got people talking and watching it to find out what the fuss is about. Who would have watched it otherwise?

Also, she needs to lose the bleached hair.

  9. Meg says:

    They photoshopped her bellybutton weird

  10. Jacq says:

I think for her to realize what happened to the significance of the VMAs, she needs to take a step back and look at what happened to MTV. MTV is barely interested in music anymore. It’ll one day be an urban legend that they ever even played videos.

    • Victoria says:

Itll be an urban legend… Bahahahaha you made me spit out my coffee. Why even bother making music videos? It’s a waste of money cuz who’ll play it? Remember TRL? I used to watch it but again it was the ’90s and I was a teen. So funny, your comment made my day.

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

      I want the 90sMTV back.

  11. tiredofrumers says:

letting viewers vote in the social media age is what ruined the vmas. people used to sometimes at least get rewarded for clever and/or innovative videos. now it’s whomever’s fans spend the most time clicking on the vote button who get rewarded.

  12. LadyMTL says:

If she is Botoxing and or tweaking it’s really well done, because she doesn’t look all that different to me. TBH I’ve never cared all that much about any awards shows and I just had to laugh when I read her quote…it made her sound like a grumpy old lady.

  13. jacquie109 says:

I swear to god this woman eats babies!! She is 43 and looks 25, there is no way she just looks that good natually. I think she has an awesome plastic surgen; or she really is a vampire..

    • laura says:

You are right, and whatever she is doing is working compare to all the brandi glanville/taylor armstrong etc…she looks in her twenties!

  14. TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

    Agree with everyone starting with gracie and jill; first, obviously award shows are a joke; Jimi Hendrix never won an award and every guitarist worldwide is inspired by him, and his music is everywhere guys like Kenny wayne shepard and Gary clark play his tunes;
    Second, i remember MTV from the 80s when it truly was a cultural force and fun, although MTV now is part of a conglomerate, it has to be a tax write-off or something no other reason why it still exists;
Finally, a previous thread on no doubt said it all
Really, was No Doubt that good of a band compared to what? They had a few good songs – now they look like caricatures of themselves.

  15. emu says:

They ARE dated! Which is terrible because I’m such a huge No Doubt fan (outside of the new album) It’s like how I felt when their new stuff came out. They’re still thinking that the old school label-marketing ways are the way to go. They doing interviews and 1/2 hour specials on E! like it’s 2001 or something. They got big in a time when MTV and music labels were big and now there are so many different outlets that no, no one really cares about the VMAs.
