Hayden Panettiere takes 5 Children’s Hospital patients shopping

I have to admit, I really didn’t like Hayden Panettiere when I first started hearing her name all the time. But now that she’s passed the 18-year-old mark and still hasn’t gone all Lindsay Lohan like everyone thought, she’s growing on me. Especially since she’s done some pretty gutsy things that other celebs just talk about – like going to Japan and actually paddling out on a surfboard to try to prevent fisherman from killing dolphins. And she didn’t back down after the fact, even when the Japanese issued an arrest warrant against her. While Hayden is very pro-animal, she seems to be into doing good deeds in general. This past weekend she took five sick girls from Children’s Hospital shopping.

Not only does young award-winning Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere spend her light up the small screen on the popular NBC TV show, but she also helps bring smiles to the faces of girls who are in need of a little holiday cheer.

On Dec. 13 the 20-year-old real life hero spent her Saturday morning with five girls who are currently patients at the Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles on a Candies shopping spree at Kohl’s in San Gabriel, Calif. The girls were recovering from aneurisms, strokes, paralysis [sic] of the nerves and spine and battling sickle cell anemia. The admirable group was awarded $500 to put together a brand new head-to-toe look just in time for the holiday season.

The stylish star tells OK! that while she did suggest pieces to the girls while shopping, they didn’t seem to need much help!

“Not many of them listened to me!” she admits to OK!.

[From OK! Magazine]

Hayden is a Candies spokesperson, so this was likely part of her promotion for the brand. It was still a great way to do something nice, and I bet all five of the girls were really excited to meet her. So many celebrities go out of their way to avoid interacting with people or (gasp!) fans. And I understand the desire for privacy, but it’s nice to see a celebrity who’s willing to spend time with her fans, for whatever reason.

I can appreciate her lack of Lindsay Lohanism BUT if you’ve seen her music video on YouTube for her first single “Wake Up Call” you might just start hating her again…

  2. NA says:

Hayden’s video is horrible but what she has done for whales, dolphins, and humans is great!

  3. CKC says:

To clear up, Hayden is only 19, not 20. I know this because she’s 16 days older than me.

  4. Jag says:

Love her, but it took a little wind out of it that it was a Candies promotion. I was hoping she did it of her own accord.

Still, the girl is wonderful and gorgeous.

  5. Kate says:

I dont understand why some posters need to bring Lindsay down all the time. You dont know what she does for ovarian cancer,or how she is helping cancer sufferers for years, without much publicity(SHE PROBABLY KNOWS SHE WILL LAMBASTED AS A PR STUNT IF SHE EVER TALKS ABOUT IT).Welldone for Hayden i say.No matter why she did it she gave joy. 😮

one thing i don’t get about her though is that she’s seems pro-animal with her whole whale and dolphin thing, but then she designs purses for coach that’s made from calfskin.

Five girls were given $500 to “put together a new look?” Sorry to be so negative but that is only $100 a girl, big deal. $500 per girl wouold be a nice gesture on the part of Candies, however. $100 per girl is one pair of good shoes, not even an outfit. Surely the publicity was worth more than &2,500.

  8. barneslr says:

Wow, Tigerlille. Do you also critique every gift you get, telling the giver whether or not their gift is worthy enough for you to bother with?

If someone said they wanted to give me a $100 to buy a new outfit, I would be grateful, not critical.

  9. SeVen says:

I heart Hayden. I also Heart Heros…. and Milo… and that dude who plays Hiro . ohlawd lemme stop.

  10. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa says:

tigerlille, $100 at Kohl’s actually goes a pretty long way. you’re not getting designer duds or anything, but you can get a whole outfit and a pair of shoes easily.
i’m not the biggest fan of hayden… i watch heroes pretty religously and i think she’s a terrible actress. great that she’s a do-gooder and tries to help people, but everytime i hear her interviews or anything it just seems like she’s saying what she thinks people want to hear. she’s a little too fake for me. and i also agree with a lot of bloggers that she’s always trying to act/look older than she is. be 19 for heaven’s sake!! she’s a hollywood stage baby… there’s no way she’s as perfect as she wants people to believe.
and kate, everyone rips on lohan because of things she did to herself. she made those choices and no one made them for her. besides, i hear she’s screwed up again anyway

I love to read about celebs doing good deeds! Way too many of them say they’ll do things like this, but then cancel at the last possible moment with some lame excuse. And the next morning, the internet is awash with pics from the previous night: shallow, spoiled brats hanging around in ridiculously over-priced clubs in L.A. and getting drunk, doing the splits in a mini skirt while wearing no undies, and snorting coke!

How about providing medical care for children who can’t afford it as a way to HELP.

Clothing is the last thing sick children need.

Some actors are so clueless. It is so LA to go shopping as a way to “help” someone.

  13. jennifer says:

ok IMO im am almost positive lots of people donate money to help those in need of medical care. lots of organizations are created for this. It is christmas and giving these girls a shopping spree is a way to cheer them up. Don’t be so negative why don’t you go give money to help those in medical care.
