First photo of Ashton Kutcher in character as Steve Jobs: creepy & uncanny?

Here is the first promotional photo from the Steve Jobs bio-pic, with Ashton Kutcher playing the late Apple visionary. The film is called jOBS. That’s not a typo. The “j” is not capitalized for some reason. When Ashton was announced for the film, I think many people were like “OH HELL NO.” And while Ashton is never going to set the world on fire with his acting chops, I do have something horrible to admit… Ashton looks a great deal like the young Jobs. It’s actually sort of uncanny.

The promotional photo was just released because jOBS has been confirmed to close out the Sundance Film Festival next month. Sundance will be the film’s premiere, and I’m assuming that Ashton will push for the film to make the film festival rounds beyond that. Maybe a screening at the Tribeca Film Festival, maybe Cannes, maybe the London Film Festival. This might be the closest Ashton gets to a prestigious, award-bait role, so it will be interesting to see how he plays it. According to the Sundance announcement (of its lineup), jOBS isn’t just about the young Jobs – it will chronicle “the defining 30 years of Steve Jobs’ life.” It also stars Dermot Mulroney, James Woods, Lukas Haas, J. K. Simmons, and Matthew Modine.

Here are some photos of Ashton on the set of jOBS earlier this year:

Aesthetically it works. There we go, that’s the only nice hing I’ll be saying about Ashton this week.

  2. Riana says:

jOBS, because of iPhone, iPod, etc.

He really does look like him, quite uncanny. what’s sad is how much disease can transform a human body. Put a photo of Jobs in 2012 against any photo of him from his youth and you’d never know it was the same man.

    • Birdie says:

Thanks for clearing up the jOBS title, I was wondering about that.
They really look a lot alike, but what always gets me annoyed is Kutchers’s voice. I always think of Punk’d when I hear his annoying voice.

  3. Emily says:

Erm. No. Ashton has the blankest eyes in Hollywood, and that’s saying something. The man looks like he has two thoughts: “woah” and “duuuh”. Whatever else can be said about Steve Jobs, he was a highly intelligent man. Ashton has the brains of a flea, and I think I just insulted fleas there. And, unlike lots of other Hollywood pretty bots, he is incapable of hiding his lack of intelligence. One could typecast him as a zombie and just tell him to play himself.

    • Lee says:

He overplayed his stoner doofus character wonderfully in that 70s show, but you might want to google him before railing on his real life intelligence.

      • ataylor says:

Ditto. He can’t be THAT stupid if he got accepted into MIT, was a biochemical engineering major at the University of Iowa and his best subject in school was math…

        Douche-bag, yes.

        Stupid, no.

    • mercy says:

I’ve always felt Ashton’s eyes are his best feature … very expressive and soulful.

    • Mouse says:

      HA, second this!

    • vvvoid says:

Ashton is sharper than you think, he’s no Kelso. He was able to play Kelso so well because he was in on the stupidity.
I’m no Ashton stan, seriously, but I would never consider him stupid. A douche, likely, but a clever douche who may surprise people with this performance. There is such a machine behind this project, and Ashton hasn’t really been a lead in a while, so he must have impressed them beyond just the physical resemblance.

  4. brin says:

I just see Ashton so I’ll go with creepy.

    • DreamyK says:

Yeah, I’m not seeing Jobs there, either.

Same thing with HoLo trying to play Liz. Too much baggage, not enough talent.

  5. Bowers says:

Any photo of A.K. looks creepy to me.

  6. GoodCapon says:

The first time I saw this photo (http://www.junkaria.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/young-steve-jobs.jpg) I actually thought that it was Ashton Kutcher.

Looks-wise, Ashton has it down pat. But I’m not so sure he’s the best man for the job in the acting department. You really don’t need to find an actor who’s the spitting image of Jobs in order to do a film. Hire a good, talented actor and makeup should do the rest!

  7. Ms Kay says:

Looks like… Ashton Kutcher with a clean cut shave.

  8. Eleonor says:

    Oh. Dear. Lord.

  9. smiley says:

yeah they look alike except for the absence of the other’s brilliant mind and down to earth, non douchebag soul!

  10. Velouria says:

He’s not my all time fav but I really don’t get all the AK hate…? *shrug*

  11. Ashley says:

surprising resemblance…and although Ashton is type cast (dude wheres my car) comedic actors tend to have alot of talent when given a dramatic role

  12. KellyinSeattle says:

I like Steve Jobs but I won’t be seeing the movie as I just can’t with Asston.

  13. Mouse says:

Kutcher is so so gross, I honestly don’t understand anyone’s attraction to him. Whenever I need a mental cold shower, I just picture this doucheface and sex is suddenly the farthest thing from my mind. I feel sorry for poor dead Jobs.

  14. cici+co says:

The best thing about this post was: Dermot Mulroney, James Woods and Matthew Modine. Actually might consider seeing jOBS now, esp for Dermot & Matthew! Where has Matthew Modine been lately, anyway?

  15. Happy21 says:

I actually quite like Ashton Kutcher and may go see this because I’m interested in seeing him try to break into a more dramatic role.

  16. Lisa says:

I was prepared to say no, forgetting that he’d be playing a YOUNG Jobs. I don’t know if he can play anything besides Kelso.

  17. Michael says:

He does look a lot like him but i wouldn’t put my money on this movie being any good. Ashton is a medicore actor and the director has only directed one movie before, the horrible Swing vote.

  18. I think he looks creepily uncanny!

But I actually like Ashton. He’s funny and he was really good in “The Butterfly Effect”, which was a dramatic role. So I think he’ll do fine in this.

  19. LeslieM says:

He played such a sweet guy in Valentine’s Day. I like to think of him like that rather than the manic, trashy guy he really is as seen in Punked!

  20. alons-y alonso says:

Nope. He looks like an 80s Pool Boy.

  21. Christina says:

Ok,I know there is a lot of Ashton hate out there. I can sorta see why, he can be a complete douche and class clowny epic level annoying..BUT , he really is not stupid. As other posters mentioned above, he was accepted into great schools for biochemical engineering. That does not come with being stupid. Though he was young and partied too hard like many do and lost his way with school. Then some model scout saw his lovely face and he started modeling. For the most part I have always enjoyed his “pretty but dumb” characters like Kelso. I do think he deserves the chance to prove if he can do more than that. As for him and Demi, that was a terrible idea from the start. She is a hag and needs to lay off the plastic surgery she insists she does not get. I think he and Mila make a really adorable couple. They make a whole lot more sense than him and Demi. I have no shame in the fact that I like Ashton and think he is really hot. Like I wanna climb that giant tree, hot! He does not seem to take him self too seriously and maybe if other people realized that, they would not have so much Ashton hate. P.S. His body is quite nice in Spread…LOL

  22. Christina says:

Oh yeah and I also wanted to say: Can we get some Dermot Mulroney love up in here?? I LOVE him. I have loved him ever since he played King in Where The Day Takes You. He is a beautiful man.
