Cory Monteith voluntarily checks into rehab for ‘substance addiction’

Wow, I was not expecting this at all. Granted, it’s not like I keep a list of “Celebrities Who Will Probably Check Into Rehab This Year,” but if I did keep a list like that, I wouldn’t have added Cory Monteith’s name. According to an official and exclusive statement to People Magazine, Cory is checking into rehab to deal with “substance addiction”. He doesn’t specify what substance, so your guess is as good as mine:

Actor Cory Monteith, who stars as Finn Hudson on the Fox series Glee, has checked into rehab, PEOPLE has learned exclusively.

The actor “has voluntarily admitted himself to a treatment facility for substance addiction,” his rep tells PEOPLE. “He graciously asks for your respect and privacy as he takes the necessary steps towards recovery.”

Monteith, 30, has been open about his past struggles with substance abuse. He admitted in a 2011 interview that he had previously entered rehab when he was 19.

At the time, the actor said he hoped being honest about his struggle with substance addiction would help others.

“I don’t want kids to think it’s okay to drop out of school and get high, and they’ll be famous actors, too,” he said in 2011. “But for those people who might give up: Get real about what you want and go after it.”

Oh, I think I knew that already, that he had been in rehab as a kid? But I had forgotten it. Well, I have to applaud Cory for dealing with these issues BEFORE he caused a car accident or punched his dealer in a club at 3 am. Ever since Cory got together with Lea Michele, they both have seemed… nicer. Less famewhore-y. And they haven’t been courting the media either. For what it’s worth, Lea issued her own statement about her boyfriend’s rehab:

Glee star Lea Michele is supporting her costar and boyfriend Cory Monteith as he enters rehab for substance addiction.

“I love and support Cory and will stand by him through this,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I am grateful and proud he made this decision.”

Michele and Monteith took their romance public in April of last year and have been spotted around Los Angeles together, most recently at a Los Angeles Kings game on March 23.

Michele, 26, has been quite vocal about her feelings for her beau, telling PEOPLE in 2012, “He really, really inspires me, and he motivates me and I think he’s just so talented.”

She’s 26 years old – the same age as Lindsay Lohan. I’m not comparing them, I just found it interesting that they’re the same age. I wonder if Lea realized Cory had a problem? I wonder if Lea was the one to suggest that he check into rehab again? Anyway, send good thoughts to Cory.

Good for him for getting help. It’s not easy to admit you have a problem, especially when you’re a celebrity and surrounded by sycophants.

  2. Hannah says:

    Best of luck to him.

  3. m says:

My best bet is pills, perscription pain killers maybe. Or alcohol, but he said a while back that he doesnt drink because of his past problems. Either way, good luck to him. He seems like a good guy and its nice to see someone taking control of their problems.

  4. Joanna says:

did lea get a nose job?

  5. Erinn says:

Eh. I don’t like the show, but I think they’re a cute couple. She seems a bit over the top drama wise, but she seems to have gotten less annoying lately.

Good for him for taking responsibility before things get worse.

  6. elceibeno08 says:

It takes a lot of guts to do what Corey did. Good for him. I hope he gets his addiction under control and that he continues to be in Glee next season.

If only Lindsey Lohan had this kind of humility.

  7. Abby says:

Aw that makes me sad, but I hope he gets the help he needs. He seems like such a nice guy.

  8. marie says:

good on him for realizing the problem, I hope he gets the help he needs.

  9. Chloe says:

It guess selling your ass for more camera time can be stressful.

  10. GoodCapon says:

I wish him good luck, and good for him for having the initiative before he plunges deeper into addiction.

  11. bns says:

Did anyone else roll their eyes at Lea releasing a statement?

    • Turningvioletviolet says:

No. Why would you? She’s clearly going to be asked about it. Her statement is brief and to the point.

He seems a nice guy and I hope things work out for him. And for what it’s worth I think they seemed a good couple together and I hope they can work through this together as well.

    • Tig says:

Not too much- she maybe thought it was a good idea bef the “prob that drove them apart” stories took off. Good for him, and so glad that times have changed so that getting help is OK to own up to.

    • Esmom says:

At releasing a statement, maybe a little bit. But I thought what she said was sweet.

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I agree. Annoying that she did it with her own, separate statement/article, but what she said was pretty tactful and not too famewhore-y.

    • truthful says:

      YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Tessa says:

No, because now she won’t be hounded for a statement and all of that drama is out of the way and the focus can be on Corey.

  12. moon says:

this sounds cheesy, but they have that meant to be vibes

    • apsutter says:

I agree. They both look really happy when they’re together and she clearly loves him to pieces. It’s all in her eyes when she looks at him. I think that they probably bring out the best in each other which is why they’ve been less famewhorey and quiet about their lives now.

  13. NerdMomma says:

They seem like such a sweet couple with good heads on their shoulders. I feel sure this will work out for Cory.

  14. Kate says:

Good for him! I hope he gets better.

  15. Ralph says:

Mark my words, he won’t be the only one from that show heading to rehab. The Spanish girl and the gay-for-pay one are next.

    • Jeanette says:

Naya, yes, absolutely. And the blonde cheerleader

Darren – I don’t think so. I worked with him on a project last year here in NY and he was a fantastic kid – hard working, talented, albeit a little naive.

      • GoodCapon says:

I stopped watching Glee since the first half of Season 1 – what’s the scoop on Naya and Brittany(sp?)?

      • Kate says:

Which one? Heather Morris, or Dianna Agron?

Agron does a lot of work with pro-choice organisations. A friend was at a big event where she was a speaker for NARAL in CA last month. She said she seemed smart, articulate and switched on. I admire her – that’s not a fluffy or easy option, in the current climate. So I hope she’s not having any such issues. Not that I’d wish them on anyone, obviously.

    • Annie says:

Naya is not Spanish. Did you mean Hispanic? Kinda tacky to refer to someone by their race… And then get it wrong.

      • Natalie says:

Not to mention the implications of “gay for pay” which is just as vulgar.

I don’t watch the show, nor do I know anything about the actors, but watch your words.

      • Lauren says:

Hispanic is not a race it is an ethnicity. Race and ethnicity are not interchangeable either. But You are right about Naya not being Spanish or a Spaniard from Spain.

  16. Lamb says:

What stood out to me most about this article is that he is 30 years old! Why is a 30 year old playing a high school student??

    • jaye says:

Why wouldn’t he? It’s a paying gig. Besides, there have been many actors who played teen for roles. Almost the entire cast of 90210 were pushing or over 30 by the time that show ended. To clarify for the under 25 set, I’m referring to the 90’s original show.

    • A says:

      Cause he gets a paycheck?

    • Migdalia says:

What’s his face that played Dylan was pushing or about 30 when 90210 actually started…James Van Der Beek late 20’s when Dawson’s Creek started. Some people just have that face. I mean no one looked like TV teens in my high school…more like how they cast UK/US Skins but hey they looked young enough where it was believable.

      A job is a job…

    • andy says:

Sissy Spacek was in her mid-20’s when she played Carrie White.

      Not that unusual.

    • Lamb says:

Of course I understand why he is doing it, it’s just odd to me that television shows higher these full-fledged adults to play teenagers. More power to him I guess.

  17. epiphany says:

I wonder which blind this answers?

    • truthful says:

same thing I was thinking, I also do not beleive that they are a real couple.

something I heard from a childhood friend of his, while I was in NY.

good luck to him either way.

  18. mercy says:

Good fof him. His eyes don’t look right. Hopefully he gets the help he needs and some rest.

  19. mel says:

I had been concerned for him because he seemed to be really thin in the last couple of episodes. I even did a google search to see if he was talking about loosing weight for a part. I hope he gets the help he needs to be healthy again.

    • M says:

I thought he was looking thinner since the beginning of the season. I like Cory and Michelle together. I hope it’s nothing serious.

  20. Mr. Stinky FishFace says:

Wow I kinda thought this was an April Fools Day joke…

  21. Kiddo says:

I’m beginning to think it’s a bad idea to name a boy Cory, with all of the prior famous Corys becoming drug addicts.

  22. lucy2 says:

I give him a lot of credit for recognizing a problem and getting help. I hope he gets better.

I do have to ask though – if they hadn’t made statements…would anyone have noticed? The show isn’t that popular anymore and he’s not a huge star. Unless a tabloid had the story and was threatening to publish it, I don’t really get the point of a publicist and a girlfriend issuing statements, as nice as they were, and asking for privacy, when the whole thing probably could have happened privately with no one knowing.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I think they have a pretty big fanbase, mostly younger (15-22) crowd, plus all the theater geeks of the world and I believe Ryan Murphy has a big gay following of his projects..so I imagine that these two have quite a big following, though they are pap’d less lately. Anyway, I think Cory believes if you share your story, it will help others. I guess I more or less agree…there are some really lost people out there who would take words/experiences from him and other celebs going through tough stuff like it’s gold.

      • lucy2 says:

I could see talking about it after he’s completed rehab and is in better health, just seems odd to me to announce as it’s happening, at a time when privacy would be ideal.
That’s why I was wondering if a tabloid was about to break the story first.

    • Migdalia says:

The glee following is still somewhat big and he’s sure to be missing from the last couple episodes of the season. So better get the explanation out now…

  23. junegorilla says:

    Who?

  24. Lolita says:

Believe this is the Glee star I saw on a whim in New York in How to Succeed with some friends last year – it’s a shame he is letting his talent go to waste like this. Here’s hoping he can fix it – the boy was highly impressive and a natural in what he did on that stage. He shined that night, though I’m questioning his short run now that this comes out – I was looking to go back and see it again.

Glee, though, is still not something I would watch.

    • Happymom says:

NO-Darren Criss was in a short run on Broadway in How to Succeed. He’s a smart, talented guy-graduate of University of Michigan, from a prominent SF family.

    • Linnea says:

That guy who was replacing Daniel Radcliffe for a couple of weeks on How to Succeed was actually Darren Criss, not Cory.

Anyway, even though it’s sad that he’s still strugling with addiction I think it’s a good thing that he decided to check into rehab voluntarily. Not all addicts are able to do that.

  25. TheOneAndOnly says:

    Best of luck to him he seemed genuine on the talk shows that I saw; as for Glee, I did the same as goodcapon – after the first half of the first season I stopped watching. It’s astonishing how quickly Glee has fallen off the radar after the first season – Compare Glee to the great comedies of the 80s/90s The Cosby Show,Cheers,Friends,Seinfeld,etc. that sustained themselves for yrs. and got better as the seasons progressed; GLee burnt itself out after one year;
No wonder lea’s taking a job from an actual model and shilling Loreal hair products. Her team knows Glee is winding down, and i’m guessing hollywood isn’t knocking on her door to be the next big thing.

  26. Paul says:

Is this the same guy that was in that Harry Potter youtube musical? I let my kids watch that the other week and we all laughed and thought it was pretty cute.

Never thought he would be into that kind of stuff – he seemed to be pretty talented.

Just goes to show you can’t tell anything about a person from watching their work.

    • Linnea says:

No, that was actually Darren Criss and not Cory, just like a commenter above got Cory and Darren mixed up when thinking about How to Succeed.

  27. KellyinSeattle says:

Addiction is such a serious thing. And can become extremely critical; life and death situation. I don’t know much about him but I admire him for putting it out there that he needs help and wants to help himself. I really feel for him. Lindsay Lo should take note.

  28. Andrea says:

Proud of him for taking this tough but critical step and wishing him the best going forward.

I’m not a fan of her (though she does have talent no doubt) but it’s nice to see he has a supportive network around him.

  29. dana says:

Lea Michele and Lindsay Lohan may both be the same age, but there’s a big difference between growing up in the spotlight as Lohan did vs the relative anonymity Lea Michele got where she had the space to make her mistakes without it being splashed all over websites like this.
