Karl Lagerfeld wants to marry his fluffy kitty Choupette, he admits he ‘loves’ her

At some point last year, I realized that Karl Lagerfeld is just a full-on Cat Person. I grew up with cat people, so I know the signs. Karl’s princess kitty is Choupette, and she’s a star. She has professional photoshoots, she flies on private jets, she has three maids who tend to her every need and keep an extensive “Choupette Diary” of her activities. She also loves her daddy. I think that’s the real relationship – Karl is the cat daddy and Choupette is his little princess, the daughter he never had. His fur baby, only Karl would never use such a gauche term. Anyway, CNN got a recent interview with Karl and of course he got some questions about Choupette. What’s interesting is that Karl doesn’t really see Choupette as his daughter. Choupette is his partner. HE WANTS TO MARRY CHOUPETTE.

In case you can’t see the video, Alina Cho asks him about his “partner” Choupette, and Karl laughs at the word “partner” and says, “There is no marriage, yet, for human beings and animals . . . I never thought that I would fall in love like this with a cat.” And when asked if he spoils Choupette rotten by flying her on private jets, etc, he says, “Yes. Why not?” But what if Choupette is a famewhore kitty who is just using him to launch her own solo career? No, of course not. Karl isn’t worried about that. As for the marriage thing… I think it’s sweet! Choupette is a spoiled princess, but he thinks of her like a wife, or a high-maintenance mistress.

Also, Karl recently gave an interview to Madame Le Figaro, and he was asked if there was anything he wouldn’t endorse/design. He said:

“Toilet paper? Support stockings? Condoms? But maybe… You know, I am mainstream. This exclusivity, it’s old-fashioned. The product has to defend itself. And it is not because it is cheaper that the design might be neglected. Bad taste for the general public could have been encouraged but it would be very condescending to think that [the masses] are blind. Today, even though you’re not rich, you can afford good furniture for your home, and it’s the same with clothes: a good pair of jeans and a good T-shirt can be perfect.”

In the same interview, Karl also said some bitchy things about people who always complain that they’re “bored” – Karl basically says that “time is so precious and there are so many things to do in life” so he doesn’t spend any time with people who whine about being bored. He slap the boredom right out of you! He also threw some shade at Andy Warhol, especially when asked if he had similar hair to Warhol: “I don’t like it at all. First of all, my hair is mine! I knew him, I even shot for him. He was very nice but not funny at all. I admire what he’s done; he became the king of pop culture whereas he was not a really good fashion artist, but I have nothing to do with him.” Perfect shade. Well-executed. Perfect amount of bitchiness and apathy.

I got so excited when I read ‘Choupette’! I love her. And her cushion.

  2. Shauna says:

I think she’s a snowshoe kitty. As the mama of two snowshoes, they’re very hard not to fall in love with. They live for affection, play in water, think the world should not only see their bellies, but should live to give belly rubs. Mine come when called and follow me around. I’m giving him a pass on this one. 🙂

    • someone says:

i ADORE these kinds of cats. i have an orange fluffball garfield-look alike named hobbes, and while he’s beautiful, he does not care to cuddle with me ever. where can i get a cat like yours and choupette? i’m not replacing my cat by any means, it is my family cat and i am thinking for when i move out, i would like a cat of my own.

      • Shauna says:

To Someone: both of mine are rescue cats. There are certain markings to look for. Wikipedia has a good starting point. Main things are white feet and head has big W, IIRC.

Mine both are very vocal and try to both sleep on my face. That doesn’t always work. 🙂

    • Nina says:

Nah, I’d say she’s a tortie point Ragdoll.

      • Pollyv says:

Maybe a tortiepoint Birman. Her coat is light but she appears to have the Birman white gloves and roman nose.

  3. & says:

I agree with the whole “I’m bored” thing. There’s always something to do.

    • j.eyre says:

My mom always said (and I have since started saying) “if you’re bored, it’s your own fault”.

She would generally add something about there’s always books.

      • & says:

I like that. I’ll have to say that next time I hear someone say that they’re bored. I don’t hear it often except from kids. I think a lot of people, once they grow up, realise there isn’t much time to be bored, and if they have that extra time and are bored it is their own fault.

      • OMGsprinkles says:

My grandma always said “Only boring people get bored.” Then she would usually add something like “Go flush your head down the toilet. That’s interesting.” or some other random thing…she was a funny bird!

      • Emily C. says:

If I whined to my mom that I was bored, I was immediately given cleaning to do. So I got to the point that, as an adult, whenever I was bored I’d clean. Then I became disabled, so when I’m bored I can’t clean… but thankfully, now the internet exists.

    • littlestar says:

I agree, life is too wonderful to ever be boring! And when there is absolutely nothing to do, I can easily get lost in my daydreams and enjoy myself :).

  4. Jackie Jormp Jomp (formerly Zelda) says:

My cat has big, round, innocent eyes like that, and is the most affectionate thing ever, literally wraps his little arms around you when you hold him. I’m totally in love with my cat. I get it.

  5. Ladybug says:

I’m in love with my cats and I’m not ashamed to admit it. The fact Karl is in love with his cat makes me like him a little more.

    • littlestar says:

I’m in love with my cats too. They make me smile and laugh every single day :).

    • Trillion says:

Oh me too. I mean, look at her. She’s more than just my avatar, she’s my alter-ego. My son has grown up thinking of her as his “little big sister”. She’s an Odd-Eyed Turkish Van, one green eye and one blue. Just like Bowie! And I love KL’s response to boredom. Life is too full of amazing art to ever be bored.

  6. Kara says:

How cute!! Haha I always thought he seemed so icy! Leave it to a cat to turn anyone into a big mooshball =) love cats hehe

  7. Thora says:

You know those who said gay marriage was going to be the start of the slippery slope would feel vindicated by this article. Just sayin’.

    • Colu says:

I agree. When he said “yet” I cringed. I knew instantly it would fuel those people.

  8. Chichai says:

I have guinea pigs that I spoil rotten. Love that he’s like, “I love my cat, so what?”

  9. Christin says:

He was merely responding to a question, but I understand his appreciation for the unconditional love of a pet. I like his comments about boredom. There is always something to do, including maybe helping others! Life is not about nonstop entertainment, but that’s how some people seem to view it.

  10. DanaG says:

I’m in love with my cat she doesn’t fly first class but she is very happy. Cats can be just as affectionate as dogs can. My cat can play fetch and rolls over although not when I ask. As for the boredom it’s true there is always things to do it’s just sometimes we are too lazy to do them.

  11. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Cats generally don’t like to travel – anyone here ever taken their cat camping?

    • Jackie Jormp Jomp (formerly Zelda) says:

Holy crap that’s a great idea.

    • cr says:

When we camped we had two cats, who came with us. One, my beloved Tabby, who’d probably been dumped from a car, never traveled well. The other cat, a Siamese, traveled just fine. Though, of course, she did yowl a lot, just because.

      • & says:

I have 2 siamese cats and we move all the time (8 times in 2 years, 4 different states) and they used to yowl a lot. I bought a groomers carrier large enough to fit both of them and their littler box, and I put very soft blankets blankets down for them. The yowling has stopped, and they are great travelers! I’m currently moving 1,100 miles and they’ve been great.

    • chimchimsmom says:

Can’t. My sweetiecat Mooch poops himself as soon as the car starts.

      • Poink517 says:

My cat is a pretty good traveler – I take him in the car in a little basket (no top on it) and he just curls up and chills. I’ve had him since he was REALLY little (4 weeks) and had him in the car early on, so I think he just got used to it. My other cat HATES traveling.

      • littlestar says:

Lol! My cat Spot throws up as soon as we put him in his cat carrier.

    • poppy says:

      lol.

    • annaloo. says:

I would be scared to take any pets camping because of predator animals. I once saw a cat taken by an owl on a visit to my aunt’s farm –I have not recovered from that. As for travel, my beebees are OBNOXIOUS! And they pick up bad behavior from the other. They yowl and scream so loudly people glare at us on the street. And of course they soil themselves. But I LOVE THEM!!!!

  12. katiebob says:

I’m a proud cat lover. They are fabulous beings!

  13. Jackson says:

This has got to be the least weird, most normal facet of this man’s personality. I’m beginning to think he is human after all.

  14. la chica says:

Choupette! What a great name for a cat.

  15. Sumodo1 says:

    GMAFB

  16. gogoGorilla says:

I know he’s a douche, but I love Kunty Karl. He throws the shade like no one else.

And I LURVY his kitty! She is so gorgeous. There is nothing shameful in admitting your life is ruled by the whims of furry friends. My cat follows me around like a small dog, although she would be highly incensed to know I described her that way. 🙂

  17. MistyNinja says:

Haha. Dr. No. From now on I am referring to him as Dr. No.

  18. Eleonor says:

    He calls her Miss Choupette!!

  19. kaligula says:

i love dat kitteh!!!! but i love my kitteh more…. oh, ok, allz kittehz is good. but MY KITTEH 4REALZ IS THE QUEEN OF THE UNIVERSE

  20. TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

The fact that Choupette Lagerfield has her own tag just made my day.

  21. MrsBPitt says:

Never thought Lagerfield was into pussy…pussy cats you nasty people!!!!!

  22. rlh says:

His love for Miss Choupette is awesome, they way he just accepts it and gives her the best. And that last picture, him with the cat ears, is epic! I must have a copy.

  23. erika says:

i respect his love for kitty but he sure is a ‘l’asshole’ when it comes to making straight out bully/bitchy public remarks about public celebs, adele is a fatty, etc., adele’s gorgeous! and boom! talent….and you aint so ‘perfectique’ yourself

  24. Severine says:

I’m a cat person, love Choupette and love Karl !

  25. Jaded says:

I was in love with my last cat, Basil, the way Karl loves Choupette. I used to think I loved him too much and that I would fall to pieces when he finally passed. Well I did fall to pieces for months. He was my very special boy and we had an amazing bond.

However I have 2 lovely gurl kittehs now and though I don’t love them as obsessively as I did Basil, they are wonderful creatures so Karl gets a pass from me because of his unconditional and readily admitted cat adoration.

    • annaloo. says:

Your post worries me because I have bond like that with my little boy, Shaddam. He’s 13, so I’m aware that things will change, and I worry about how I will cope with losing him. I know he’s going to break my heart hard.

  26. TheWendyNerd says:

So Karl Laugerfeld is secretly the leader of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. That explains a lot.

  27. Glaughy says:

I’m in love with my four pet rats. They are so affectionate, hilarious and intelligent. They like to snuggle with me, hop around, wrestle with each other, and a couple of them respond to their names. They are all males, so I call them my boyfriends. 🙂 Maybe some people think I’m insane, but I can live with that.

    • teehee says:

Definitely not insane, jsut more compassionate and connected than they are. I have the same thing with my guinea pigs (3 boys) and one is my absolute favorite 🙂

      • Glaughy says:

Aww I love guinea pigs too. I used to have a few, years ago. I love it when they squeak for food, so cute! Sweet animals.

  28. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

The way he talks about his cat is the way I talk about my dog. She’s the family dog, but she’s MY dog. She’s a fat little mini English bulldog who snores and farts in my bed. She sleeps all day, but gets up whenever she hears me come home. She sleeps up in the playroom and ignores my mom whenever she calls her down, but comes down for me. When I do get home, she follows me around from room to room, and just generally wants to sleep on my bed. I’ve had to kick her out for a while now, because every time I leave my room, while Danni’s in it, I come back and she’s got her fat little butt on my pillow and is snoring. Every time I yell at her to get off, or I try to pull her off halfway, she just lays her big head down further, tucks her front paws under her head, and splays her back legs out and goes to sleep. I love my dog.

  29. handsome man saved me from the monsters says:

So I guess he won’t be making ugly clothes out of this animal

  30. skuddles says:

I feel the same way about my kitties – they’re such a huge, wonderful part of my world. Although I perceive myself strictly as ‘Mom’ and they are my furry kids… I have no desire to marry them 😉

  31. teehee says:

I’m in love with my adorable little man, Bienchen—- a grey guinea pig. He is THE sweetest little man and so empathic and connected to people. Very communicative, willful, but gentle, calm, and happy. 🙂 its a sweet idea to make a pet yoru partner, giving them all the legal benefits it may impart (such as ensuring financial care and custody etc).
its not enough that I can take 10 pics of him everyday, I want to take him with me to a studio sitting for pics of the both of us to see and show how much I love him 😀

  32. holyme says:

I absolutely ADORE KARL LAGERFELD. He is a legend. Just love him. What he says and does is totally inspiring.

and hells bells, i’d marry Miz Chopette too, just for the damn maid service alone if she’d have me! Lol!

i might have to reopen a Twitter account, ’cause following her sounds like the BEST idea i’ve heard of today!!! 😆

  35. Trashaddict says:

The man is right on track to become the next Bond villain…..

  36. DreamyK says:

Peeps the rescue kitty is now 2 yrs old. I have zero idea how I lived without her. I wasn’t sure if I was a Cat Person, and as it turns out, I’m not..I’m a Cat LOVER!!

Thanks, Karl. You’re much more likable now that I know you have ridiculous love for Choupette 🙂

  47. JC says:

I’m obsessed with mine. I have a seal point himmy and a lilac point himmy with an underbite. They’re both rescues. I’d give them a kidney.

    • Kristine says:

I as well have a seal point himmy. I love her to death. She is so adorable and a total goof ball. Mine was also a rescue. 😀
