Melissa McCarthy: ‘I get letters from actresses worried they had to fit a certain look’

Melissa McCarthy has a new cover interview with More Magazine, which is aimed at ladies in my demographic. (I just turned 40, thankyouverymuch.) Some quotes from the story came out a little earlier this week, but I’ve had the chance to read more of what she said, and it just solidifies the love I have for Melissa. She gives an excellent interview, she doesn’t hammer home the same points over and over or sound like she’s full of herself. I’m sorry for framing celebrity interviews in such a negative way, but I’m so often disappointed with them. In Melissa’s case, the more I hear from her the more I want to get to know her. Here’s some of what she told More:

On actresses thanking her
“The letters I really love are from young actresses who were worried they had to fit a certain look. They say I’ve opened it up. And I don’t just mean plus-size girls. You can push things now. With all the great performances in ‘Bridesmaids,’ it changed how people see funny women.”

On her weight
“I’ve been every size in the world. Parts of my 20s, I was in great shape, but I didn’t appreciate it. If I was a 6 or an 8, I thought, ‘Why aren’t I a 2 or a 4?’ Now I feel like I have two great kids and the dreamiest husband on the planet, and everything else is just a work in progress.”

On being 40
She doesn’t focus on “the stupid stuff I worried about at 20, because at 20 you don’t have any responsibilities, so of course you’re a shallow narcissist. You can’t appreciate anything, you’re so self-absorbed. I bought into it — I should be taller, thinner, have better hair. But I think that’s part of being young. Now, especially with kids, you lose any sense of time or energy to worry about all the little stuff. It’s like the chip was taken out.”

On her husband
“I got hit with the lucky stick with Ben”

Melissa’s husband, Ben Falcone, gushes about her
“We got hit with the same lucky stick. From the very first time we spoke, we were on the same page. We love each other, respect each other and try not to sweat the small stuff. And we really make each other laugh.”

I didn’t realize Melissa was 42, I always assumed she was around 35. I really like what she said about being grateful for who you are and what you have. My mom always tells me that and she’s right. Things change and you look back and realize that you were lovely. It’s hard to look at yourself now, at this point in time, and feel the same way. I can’t imagine trying to be an actress and having to deal with criticism on that level.

The photos accompanying the article are really nice too. They styled Melissa in a bold-print dress and curled her hair. The people at More get it.

Her and her husband are so adorbs! (I’m so sick of her having to constantly talk about her weight, she is so much more than that. There are plenty of actors that are not ‘leading lady’, usually called ‘character actors’, so why is she any different?)

Sandy looks HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT! And both woman look amazing(especially for woman in their 40s)

She’s just like adele… Big girl with pretty face. I’m a skinny girl since born, naturally. And being called fat is as hurt as being called skeleton. I actually envy her face lol

That jumpsuit is so ugly! From the waist up she looks good but what the hell!

Meh… actresses still have to fit a certain look – if she were a healthier weight she wouldn’t have been cast in Bridesmaids or that Mike & Molly travesty, any more than Scarlett Johansson would have been a 300lb Black Widow.

Obesity has long been considered “funny” in Hollywood.

I’m a size 16 at the moment. Have kickass boyfriend and awesome job. Have perfect cholesterol and BP. Ran a 5k last summer. Slowly. But I ran it. I am working on dropping some weight for health reasons. I have lots of belly fat which is bad for your heart and I don’t want to drop dead at fifty like tony soprano. But the fatness doesn’t stop you from having love great sex shenanigans adventures etc.

@June: You’re awesome! I’m a size 20 and my BP and cholesterol are in the healthy rage as well. I can’t run a 5k, but I can swim a little more than a mile^.^

        Ladies –

Good for you for realizing that your good health is far more important than your clothing size.

It is such a cliche, but her size really doesn’t detract from the beauty of her face. She’s really a beautiful woman.
