Brangelina will take their losing streak to Britain

goldenglobe 9 120109
Brangelina will take their nomination-and-losing streak to Britain! Thursday, the couple were nominated for BAFTAs, the British Academy Awards. Brad Pitt was even nominated twice – one for Best Actor (for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and for Best Supporting Actor (for Burn After Reading). La Jolie only got the one nomination for Changeling.

They’ve started airing the BAFTAs on American television the past few years, usually on E!, and I quite like the ceremony. People get as dressed up as the Oscars, but usually in warmer gowns or suits. There’s the feeling that the British film community is significantly smaller than Hollywood, and of course British artists are usually given preference when the awards are handed out. That means that double-nominee Kate Winslet is most likely a lock on one or both of her categories.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt travel well – the couple are up for major prizes at the British equivalent of the Oscars: the Orange British Academy Film Awards.

Mirroring their Golden Globe and SAG Award distinctions, Jolie has been nominated as best leading actress for her role in director Clint Eastwood’s Changeling, while Pitt has a nod for leading actor in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, it was announced Thursday.

Pitt, in fact, is a double-nominee. He’s also in the running as best supporting actor in the Coen Brothers’ Burn After Reading – meaning he’ll face competition from Golden Globe-winning Dark Knight costar Heath Ledger.

Double Globe winner Kate Winslet is also competing against herself at the BAFTAs, with two nominations for best actress – in Revolutionary Road and The Reader. (She is similarly nominated for the SAG Award.)

Best picture at the Globes, Slumdog Millionaire, is in the running for best movie of the year, along with Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk and The Reader.

Winners will be announced at London’s Royal Opera House Feb. 8.

From People

What’s always interesting is who didn’t get the nomination. British actress Sally Hawkins, a Golden Globe best actress (comedy) winner for Happy Go Lucky got snubbed, as did her director Mike Leigh and the film itself. English actor Michael Sheen, who plays David Frost in Frost/Nixon also failed to secure a nomination. In Sheen’s case, there’s already some press that the BAFTAs have an “anti-Welsh” bias. For reals? Sheen is Welsh? And that matters to Brits? Also snubbed: director Christopher Nolan, the British director of The Dark Knight. What in the world is happening in Britain?

Why the negative headline.. Oh I get it, you have to have a negative headline when you are talking about Brad/Angie.. Why did you not mention Meryl Streep, or Leo, or the other actors who have not won or were not nominated. Brad and Angie are just two of many actor and actresses nominated. But the others do not generated hits on the site.. I mean Kate won her GG.. But who did the media focus on..Angie.. and of course she and Brad will get negative comments towards them because someone as always decided to make them the focus… They have been nominated. If you don’t like it.. then deal with it.. If they win something GREAT.. If they don’t it still does not erase the FAB year they both have had.

    OK.. let the hating begin..

  2. janey says:

Britain’s film community, because it is small seems to be quite cliquey, although they prefer their more ‘alternative’ artists I think.

Nolan doesn’t need to wory anyway – surely he is guaranteed an oscar nomination? Although, totally agree about Happy Go Lucky.

Maybe Brangelina will find success in the UK…

  3. yourself says:

Ha ha ha , I kind of love this. They are nominateda and then they lose. Mind you I did not think that any of them was particularly good in their respective movies. The movies were oscar material. Brangelina are not the most multidimensional actors. Their nominations are for publicity purposes. Not that people like seeing them, but the media does go on and on about them and it makes great news when they lose and give stink eyes to winners. Ha!

  4. Kaiser says:

Debra – I love The Brange! I just thought it was a funny way of announcing that they were nominated for BAFTAs… it’s not like they’re going to win!

  5. Kristen says:

    Debra ~

I have to say I am with you on this one. No matter what they do, or don’t do, win or don’t win all people will put our there is negativity.

I do have the feeling that while they might like getting an award (I mean who doesn’t?) I don’t think they care either way. They seem to happy with their lives, family and causes.

So even if they don’t win an award – they have a gift more precious then a statue! EACH OTHER!

  6. DD says:

why do they bother going to all these award shows, aren’t they above all this.

  7. geronimo says:

LOL! Kaiser = ZOMG Brangelina hater!!

I love the BAFTA’s, my fav award ceremony. They’re always fun, smaller, more intimate and less reverential than the other big award ceremonies. And usually quite drunken.

  8. Kaiser says:

Geronimo – I know, right? All of that worshipping and shrine polishing for naught. Do they serve drinks at the BAFTAs? When I’ve seen them, they always seem to be sitting uncomfortably in some cold-looking theatre.

  9. Anon says:

So true, and where is Ned? LOL Without them there would be no awards or gossip. Seems like they can’t be ignored, that’s amazing. There is a Brad or Angie or both post on every page of this site. If you really want them to go away ignore them geez its simple be “indifferent”. These are the only celebs that when not seen stories about are made up about them anyway.
We will know people are truly over them when their threads get 0-2 comments
for now let the hate continue LOL
Wonder how long this thread will be with such a title?

  10. geronimo says:

kaiser – Yes, you’re right on the venues – old theatres in the main, which is why they need to lure them in with oodles of booze. This year’s presenter, also, is slightly controversial, Jonathan Ross. This will be his first public outing since his BBC suspension for ‘obscene’ phone calls with Russell Brand so he’ll probably have to be on his best behaviour (which is kind of a shame.)

Too funny you’re been branded a hater! You might need to rethink your ‘writer neutrality’ position!

  11. teri says:

Did I hear wrong that Brad and Angelina won the PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD? Wouldn’t consider that a losing steak by any means.

  12. jay says:

People are sick of them. Their acting is over done and they sell their private life and then complain about it to whomever will listen. If the media stops talking or writing about them just watch what happens they do an interview and talk about their private life again or take the kids for a walk…give the nanny a break for the photo opt.

  13. NotBlonde says:

Oh calm down, Brangeloonies. Kaiser is one of your kind (Love you Kaiser :P). Tt’s just a funny headline since it’s inevitable that they’ll lose considering it’s the BAFTA’s and they almost always give their awards to British folk. They’ll nominate the hell out of Americans but the one Brit in the category will squeeze it out.

  14. Faye says:

ok let’s drag all 6 kids to Britian this time, I mean who needs stability??

  15. MoJo says:

I LOVE it when people get upset at others’ negative comments and ruckus-causing by… leaving negative, angry comments and causing ruckus. I thought it was funny, but who am I? Props to Kaiser for trying to break the monotony of yet another Brad/Angelina article with some humor.

Michael Sheen is ADORABLY Welsh. (I nearly fell over when he was on Letterman, and he didn’t talk just like Tony Blair, lol.) While I can’t say for sure from firsthand experience, it sounds like there is an anti-Welsh bias. I’ve heard that it’s hard enough for a Welsh actor to get decent jobs outside of Wales, let alone play anything other than token Welsh character in English productions. (With exceptions, of course.) It seems like they either end up in Hollywood playing American (see: Matthew Rhys) or playing the kooky, weird Welsh person (see: Rhys Ifans). Dating Sienna Miller may or may not be a requirement. I’ve even heard of complaints that the nominees for the Welsh BAFTAs tend to be mostly non-Welsh.

Sad if it is true. Because Sheen is immensely talented and likable and did brilliantly in Frost/Nixon, and Wales also gave us Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Matthew Rhys.

  16. MoJo says:

Oh! And Christian Bale. Wales also gave us Christian Bale.

    Mmm Christian Bale.

  17. vdantev says:

Hardly a losing streak, silly monkeys.

  18. mary says:

she looks like a transvestite in every picture – they all have the same jaw line, same face shape, etc. When she had all her plastic surgery, why did she go for the tranny look? Can’t stand either one of these losers.

  19. o says:

    mannequins. not real.

i’m beginning to feel sorry for the kids.

if we’re getting this much face time with these 2, how much is left for the children?

    stop adopting, already.

  20. PJ says:

AJ looks so…preening! She obviously loves the limelight. I don’t see her “retiring” in favor of full-time diaper-changing anytime soon.

This year’s BAFTA nominees were a little repetitious–they nominated the same 5-6 movies in every category.

  21. vdantev says:

PJ it IS a photo-op after all, hello…..

  22. AC says:

Re : DD “aren’t they above all this” … look i don’t love them or hate them but in their defence when you’re nominated for something… you show up unless you have a really good reason not to. It’d be disrespectful, of their peers and the people who are acknowledging their talent, not to. We may just see award shows as a parade of fashion and publicity but… if in your line of work there were awards and your peers acknowledged something you did… you’d probably show up

  23. Cheyenne says:

Being nominated for an award means your film is recognized as one of the top five in its nominated category out of the hundreds of movies that are released each year.

I would imagine most studios, actors, directos, producers etc. would give their eyeteeth for Brad and Angelina’s “losing streak”.

  24. aleach says:

lol to debra77 & kristen- no need to take it personally….just because kaiser said “losing streak” you get your panties in a bunch…jeeeesh. lol

  25. Maritza says:

Why does Angelina dress like an old lady?

  26. xiaoecho says:

What’s going on with her neck?…..and those raptor hands – that bag looks like it should be a little furry animal with a bit of blood coming from its mouth

  27. vdantev says:

To annoy her critics, of course.

  28. Tess says:

I don’t get it. Why does she go with that Morticia Addams look?

You can see it in the first photo. She looks so dang colorless….

  29. so what says:

I hope they stay over there..Im sick of those two.

  30. kate says:

i hope they stay there, too, along with madge and “fishsticks” paltrow. now if we could only send paris hilton and joe the plumber to england to join them…yay!

  31. Codzilla says:

    xiao: “Raptor hands” — lol!

  32. Ned says:

I think her smile is stuck as her entire facial muscles.

They overly stretched her face this time.

Her avoidance of food, doesn’t help either.

  33. Observer says:

If you look at past relationship photos of Angelina and whoever-at-the-time, it’s always the same. She’s looking up at him/her/them adoringly with this half smirk/smile on her lips while her eyes are glued to his/hers/theirs. It’s all an act. Publicity , good or bad, brings money to the actor who would otherwise remain unnoticed

  34. debra77 says:

To aleach; my panties are just fine. I responded to the heading because that is the tone in all heading. It is done to get the attention. Yes I know that is what most heading do.. But it is misleading.. I take offense to the fact that they are the only actors being called losers. As if they are the only actors nominated. Kate did not beat Angie for the GG. She received the most votes. You can not lose something you never had. Same goes for Brad not winning. It just seems that even after 4 years we are still having the same old stories. Same old headlines, some old attacks. I also don’t like that people result to attacking a woman’s appearance. Many people find Angelina beautiful and Brad handsome; some people do not. That is a matter of taste. But some take it to an ugly level. And the thing that is most sad is that other women participate in it as well. What a step back we have made. They are together and seem happy. If it last great, if it ends then it only affects them and their family.. Not the people posting here. They have returned to Berlin and have not been seen. For attention whores as some of you call them, they are really falling short on the job. They are usually seen only when they are promoting a film or humanitarian cause. Never seen them at fashion events or other premiers (unless for a friend). But then that does not make great headlines now does it.

  35. Leanne says:

Jolie and Pitt need to leave for good retire and actually become parents. People say how she is a mother of 6? Would a good mother take her kids from one country to the next, that does not allow them to have a stable enviroment whatsoever! How are these kid’s supposed to have friends or proper schooling? Home school is ok if you otherwise have a stable enviroment. Did anyone see Brad Pitt’s reaction when that guy at the Golden Globes made the comment about people not doing things properly and then referred to Pitt. He DID NOT like that at all. You can see he is getting sick of all the “haters” and same with jolie. They are both pathetic to think that their past actions would not have consequences. They were major superstar’s now they are living the consequences. They can leave to whatever counrty they want, hopefully they will stay out of the tabloids for awhile and we can all find something different to talk about. Although I enjoy the Bragelina blogs, it is getting kinda boring.

  36. HallieB says:

Leanne, many celebs always travel with their familes. MattD always does and and he has a tutor for his oldest daughter. Dustin Hoffman said he ALWAYS had his family with him on location, ALWAYS, as he does not think a family should be separated. Both Brad and Angelina have said Maddox is homeschooled, just like Will and Jada do for their kids. What on earth is wrong with a family that loves each other always being together as much as is possible? The Beckhams are always seen travelling with their kids all over the world. Brad and Angelina are seen at work, at premieres, and not much more than that, they are not seen for weeks at a time, and their kids are not seen every single day like Suri or Violet. The tabs will keep lying about them as long as they make money, and intelligent people know this. You can’t blame Brad and Angelina for tab/pap exploitation.

  37. Papsmear Hilton says:

Kate, I will be moving to London in the not-so-distant future. I’ve realized how much I am HATED in America and well, it’s time I move onto greener pastures and MILK! After all, America’s economy sucks a$$, so I’m going to spend my millions err pounds in jolly ol’ England.

    TTYN.

    Love and kisses,
    Papsmear err Paris Hilton

  38. truth-SF says:

LOL @ Papsmear Hilton. your comment made me spit my drink at my computer screen.

  39. teri says:

Wouldn’t it be great to boot the haters to England and take our great country back and keep Brad and Angelina! They have so much love and compassion, wish I could say that about some of you.

  40. hmm says:

HallieB, you made some really good points and I totally agree that you see so many more pictures of Violet and Suri than you do any of the Brangelina bunch. And yet people always talk about what a good mother Jen Garner seems like even though she constantly keeps her daughter on display. I just think that some people have such an irrational hatred of Brangelina that they cannot be rational or fair.

  41. Christina X says:

    Teri, wow. Just wow.

People who base personal judgments on people just because they don’t like Brangelina is really extreme and pointless.

No, not everyone adopts from third world countries, but it doesn’t mean they’re less compassionate than Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie. I mean, get a grip.

  42. prissa says:

Brad looks like Johnny Knoxville with those glasses on!

  43. Judy says:

Most haters are women who had hubbys that got bored with their crap and found someone else lol or those that fear that the husband will get bored with them, or the ones that are so damn jealous of AJ they cannot see straight. If we vbelieve all the crap that they put in rag mags about these stars (some people do) we would all be idiots. These stars have lives too and fall in and out nof love ,get divorced, cannot blame the stars for our divorce rate lol

  44. aleach says:

wow judy, wayyy off base with that first line…

  45. NotBlonde says:

Calm down, Debbie. Kaiser is a Brangeloonie like yourself.

And they are losing. Not getting the most votes in something you are nominated for is losing.

They aren’t particularly good actors is the trouble. Every few years they choose a good Oscar bait movie, turn out a decent performance and get nominated but no one in their right mind would give Angelina Jolie an award for Changeling over Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road or Anne Hathaway in Rachel Getting Married. I’ve seen all three films and really, Kate did the best job and she’s a far superior actress just in terms of fully becoming a character as opposed to Angelina who you can always tell is Angelina Jolie.

The only Oscar she’s ever won was for playing crazy and let’s face it, at that time in her life, it wasn’t that much of a stretch.

Scanning IMDb, Brad Pitt has never won an Oscar (though he was nominated in 1995 for Twelve Monkeys) and he’s won a handful of awards from various shows, mostly MTV Awards.

In terms of being respected by the acting community, those two just aren’t. They are great philanthropists and it is wonderful what they are doing for New Orleans and for children around the world. But their collective film record suggests that while bankable, they aren’t very good actors.

  46. Kristen says:

    @ LEACH ~

My panties are just fine….. why don’t you worry about your own.

  47. aleach says:

    lol…ok, kristen…

  48. Kaiser says:

Better to have a losing streak for awards than not even be considered… just sayin’ haters.

I really did mean the headline to be funny… not for all of this ZOMG They Lose Because They’re ZOMG Homewreckers!!! nonsense.

  49. Leanne says:

Yes, not winning is losing!! they are on a big losing streak. Angelina in changling was not an oscar worth performance, yes maybe the story line was oscar worthy BUT to choose Angelina was a mistake. yes, alot of people travel with their children and that is fine. The reality is though not everone adopts from 3rd world countries and drag’s the kid’s around from here to there to here to there. Intelligent people know this? Debrah77 and kristen’s panties are wound in such a knot they can’t even think properly!! Judy you are WAY OFF LINE!! Aleach, nonblonde, r right.. I’m with you

  50. daisy424 says:

Leanne child, you need to come up with newer material, your irrational hatred is trite.

BTW, Agreeing with yourself under different monikers is against CB’s rules.

  51. Mairead says:

    ZOMG IRONY Kaiser!!!!

Tell me – because Kristin Scott-Thomas didn’t win Best Actress or Sean Penn, Frank Langella, Leo diCaprio a Best Actor,at the Globes, (or indeed Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, Melissa Leo, Richard Jenkins and Clint at the Critics’ Choice), does this mean that they are “Epic Faylurs because their home-rekkurs” too? *wink*

Nope, Kate and Anne just got more votes, simple as. just as somebody has to win, 4 other are going to have to lose. As was said earlier, they’re still doing better than scores of other actresses who weren’t nominated at all.

I’m just going to throw in the ould link to the BAFTA nominations, just so that everyone can check just how many nominations certain films got (or didn’t) – once they get their complaining teeth out of the Steradent *wink*

  52. Cheyenne says:

Judy is no more off base than the haters who have come onto this blog accusing J-P fans of being homewreckers who have affairs with married men. I’ve seen it posted several times by several people. If you are going to take one side to task, then take both sides to task. Fair is fair.

  53. Kim says:

Losing is good for them, by the end of the award season, they will know what their compatriots think of them. Sometimes I get the impression that they are deliberately nominated so that they lose and we all have a good laugh. They are not that talented any way. Angelina is not fit to even wash Kate Winslet’s shoes.

  54. Cha Cha says:

The arguments on this thread or laughable, and I don’t care one way or the other on it..

But I have to say, this is the absolutely WORST picture I have ever seen of Angelina Jolie and I cringe every time I look at it. She has that, I’m in a beauty pageant going for Miss America over-the-top fake smile.

And I can’t figure out if Brad is looking at her like, um, wtf are you doing.. you’re putting it on too thick, or if he’s caught up in his own vanity thinking, ‘yes, adore me because I think I’m this generation’s Robert Redford. See how I copy his expressions and vest wearing?’

    too funny.

  55. Kristen says:

    Leanne ~

I guess I clarify this the best way I can…

I DON’T WEAR PANTIES. SO SUCK IT!
