Chloe Moretz, 16, styled as an old-school star in Glamour: gorgeous or too young?

Chloe Moretz

I don’t expect this post to get much attention because I think a lot of us feel a bit uncomfortable while commenting upon a teenage actress — especially one who seems to mind her own business. For several years now, Chloe Moretz has been playing the “wiser than her years” role in various films, so it’s very difficult for me to remember that she is merely 16 years old. She seems like she should be at least 18, right? She was the no-nonsense younger sister in 500 Days of Summer and the tomboy best friend in Diary of a Wimpy Kid; and of course, she played Hitgirl in Kick Ass, which is back for a sequel. In between promotional stints, she’s appearing alongside Denzel Washington in The Equalizer, which should be interesting. Then there’s the upcoming Carrie remake, which … no comment.

At the moment, Chloe is appearing in black-and-white for the September issue of Glamour (the one with Jennifer Aniston’s maternal instincts on the cover). She’s all styled up for old-school, Rita Hayworth-esque glamour, and the effect is beautiful if not a little unsettling because of Chloe’s young age. I do prefer the other (color) images below that highlight some cute modern clothes in a more age-appropriate manner. But get this — Chloe says that her style inspiration is 1990s Winona Ryder, and she misses Wino Forever (even though it was before her time). Awesome:

Chloe Moretz

On her style: “I’m wearing a lot of all black. I really love Winona Ryder–her look in the time right after Mermaids and Heathers, that first year of Johnny Depp and her. They were the best couple ever– they’re like Romeo and Juliet!”

On fashion: “Fashion is my break. To go away to Paris and talk about clothes, that’s like my princess time. I’m young, so I can play around. I’m lucky designers dress me, so I’m able to wear really, really, really crazy stuff! But there are brands that say, ‘We can’t dress you until you’re 20.’ People who buy their clothes don’t want to see a $50,000 dress on a 16-year-old!”

On make-up: “I do (experiment), but I’m terrified. I’ve seen so many disastrous things! I’ve only recently been going like, ‘OK, guys, let’s try some blue in there or some green.’ I’m trying to figure out what looks good on me.”

[From Glamour]

That’s good — playing it safe by talking about makeup and fashion. Her PR people are excellent, but I get a feeling that Chloe won’t be swinging from the chandeliers the moment she turns 18. There’s an intelligence and self-awareness burning inside her that is quite evident on the outside, so I am fairly certain that she won’t be pulling a Miley once she comes of age.

In the interest of promotion, Chloe attended a photocall for Kick Ass 2 last night in London. She went for the androgynous look in a cool striped suit, and it’s refreshing to witness a young starlet who doesn’t feel compelled to show up to every event wearing a kicky cocktail dress. Chloe posed alongside Christopher Mintz-Plasse. He seems like a nice enough dude, but where’s Aaron Johnson?

I don’t know how to word this exactly..

But she is a very sexually looking girl. Even when she was younger. I think these pictures are beautiful and she is really a stunning girl. But she is way too young for this. (especially the black/white ones)

In her real life she seems to be dressing more age appropriate, but she just has that “sexy” look and it is just there. Not much she can do to change it. It won’t be so bad when her age catches up to that allure.. The brown hair helps. I really like her a great deal.. And loved Kick Ass and will be seeing Kick Ass 2..

These films well the first was so much better than the usual Superhero stuff. I’m so over all of them.

    • Bubbles says:

I know this is a horrible thing to say for someone so young, but I don’t think she’s beautiful at all. Her features are very, well, weird.
I haven’t seen her in anything, is she a good actress?

      • ZigZagZoey says:

Well, even weirder….I can never figure out if I think she is pretty or not! Sometimes yes, and sometimes she is very weird looking.

      • Tapioca says:

To me she has hints of Christina Ricci.

She was great in Kick Ass, Hugo and Let Me In (even though it wasn’t as good as the Swedish original) and played a sulky kid in Dark Shadows where it was hard to tell.

She’s definitely got talent, it’s whether she goes down the Li-Lo “path of doom” or not. (There have been rumours of excessive underage partying and brattishness.)

      • lisa2 says:

That is what I think is beautiful about her. She has unusual features. Unique. She doesn’t look like anyone and she doesn’t remind me really of anyone.

that is very hard in Showbiz. I think she has such a different look that it makes her interesting to watch in screen. And she has the ability to look different and change into her character.

      • Stubbylove says:

She was very good in Dark Shadows (Tim Robbins/Johnny Depp)- that’s the only thing I’ve seen her in.

      • Carmen says:

She reminds me of that french actress Virginie Ledoyen. She’s a very pretty young woman but seen her once on Fallon and didn’t find her very likable, a bit brattish and not that interesting. She’s a good actress though, so despite her real life persona I kinda like her. Let’s see how it goes and if it lasts.

    • carol says:

really? I find her to be very asexual looking :/

    • Anelise says:

      Girl gets all the pedo$.
      You go girl!

  2. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

Looove me some Chloe, so talented and so fun in interviews. I do agree that she comes across as a lot older than 16 though, can’t wait for her to act circles around K-Stew in Sils Maria.

    • Andrew says:

I loved her in Hugo and she seems like the type to make good choices. I like her

    • Marty says:

I think coming across as older also has a lot to do with her film roles. I remember last year her staring in a movie where she was playing Eddie Rayman’s love interest, he’s 15 years older than her.

But I really like her and think she has great talent.

    • mayamae says:

I like her too. She reminds me of Kirsten Dunst, who struck it big as a child vampire as well.

  3. bns says:

    She’s cute. Loooove that suit.

  4. Karen says:

16 year olds is hollywood were staged the sane way back in the day. I see no issue. A nude photoshoot would be way too young. This seems like dress-up. No biggie

    • Trek Girl says:

Exactly. I’ve seen plenty of pictures from around that time of girls nearly the same age, and they were done in that style.

I see nothing wrong with this, nothing inappropriate.

      • Noodles says:

I don’t see how glamour can be considered worse than a really short skirt, bikini or a stomach-baring outfit.

I think glamour is much better than hardly any clothes at all.

      • Trek Girl says:

@Noodles: I didn’t think about it that way until you said “glamour”, but yeah, I think a lot of people aren’t used to seeing a young lady look glamorous. At least not in this way.

  5. Spooks says:

She wont be pulling a Miley because she actually has talent to rely on.
I don’t like the photoshoot. She has the exactly same expression in every picture and it is waaay to mature for her.

  6. Maya Dragunova says:

What is not age appropriate in this shoot? Chloe is a beautiful young actress and she look fabulous in these pictures!

    • Trek Girl says:

There isn’t anything age inappropriate in these photos.

I think the big issue is that a lot of people aren’t familiar with what was going on in photography and film in previous decades. They don’t know what was done at which ages and why, or who did them.

There is also a lot of sexualizing things that aren’t necessarily sexual. I don’t think the looks and poses Chloe is sporting are sexual in nature. Can they be? Of course, but they have more uses then just seduction and arousal.

  7. Sannie says:

She is awesome, great actress and I can’t believe how young she is.

  8. Maya says:

I feel bad for saying this because she’s young, but something about her annoys the hell out of me. It’s a combination of the duckface/pose hard she often exhibits on red carpets as well as the strong sense of entitlement/full of herself-ness I’ve gotten from some of her other interviews.

But again, she’s young and she’ll probably grow out of it…

    • Ellie says:

Gah, what you said! Thank you, I feel exactly the same way. Feel bad because she’s so young, but it is what it is.

Also, I don’t buy that she’s such a good girl. I’ve read more than a few blinds that were purportedly about her, and though I don’t often put much stock in BIs, I could actually see her being a secret party girl.

    • Gaby says:

Her duck face and squinting eyes annoy me to no end. The way she looks in pictures is the exact same way she acts. She could be talented, but I think she’s affected.

      • emmie_a says:

Her duck face annoys me too. And it looks like she had lip injections, which she didn’t need. Why do so many famous people think over-inflated lips look good??? They usually don’t!

  9. Naomi says:

I really enjoyed watching her in Hugo which is my only acting experience of her. She is talented and while I have not been drawn to her more recent projects I do like seeing what she is working on because I will definitely be watching her in future roles.

These photos are lovely. It’s the expression in her eyes that make them just miss the mark not necessarily the styling. Her eyes looks young. They accurately reflect her life experience which while rarified and unique is also limited because she’s 16 and has only so much on which to draw.

  10. BreeinSEA says:

Compared to Mileys 15 year old nudish shoot, pretty sure this is just fine. She’s playing dress up. Wish she would smile more but I find her refreshing.

  11. MeowuiRose says:

She is stunning. I agree she can come off as sexy? looking but thru no fault of her own. Maybe her full lips have something to do with it? She reminds me of an older Joey King who was all dressed up Lolita like and looked totally inappropriate. McLovin is looking good…..handsome even. ATJ can stay away with his older woman. That relationship is creepy and I have no prob saying it.

  12. Yelly says:

    I think she’s cute.

  13. energydrink says:

I don’t see where the “profound intelligence” can be seen or heard, other than the roles and image they push on her.

She seems and sounds like a regular 16 year old to me, though quite hypersexualized…but unfortunately that is also becoming the norm.

    • Tig says:

+ 10000-!! Why pose a 16 yr old as some “come hither” vamp from the 40’s? Let the girl grow up. And just bec she’s “normal” now, doesn’t mean the wheels won’t come off when she’s 18. I hope she takes a break and goes to college.

    • blaize says:

If she were 9 I’d agree, but for a 16-year-old this doesn’t seem hypersexualized.

  14. suzanne says:

She was also amazing on “30 Rock!”

I love both shoots and I really love her. I’m just hoping that her parents and minders are level headed people that want her best interest. That’s the key to not being a messed up former teen star, IMHO.

    • LIVEALOT says:

      YES! <3 her in 30rock!

First photo is great and love the styling of the colored ones…. the red carpet looks – not so much.

  15. janie says:

She is 16? Really? Her photos are beautiful, but she’s so young. I hope she doesn’t end up another Hollywood statistic.

  16. Erinn says:

    Love the second photo.

I think young girls have ALWAYS been groomed to look older in this industry. Even way back, it seemed to be the same.

    She’s a beautiful girl. I loved her in 30 Rock. She’s a talented actress.

    • DeltaJuliet says:

Right? Until they actually get older. Then they have to try and look younger. Can’t win.

  17. cassius. says:

Kind of looks like a mini Miranda Lambert.

    • lenje says:

She DOES look a little like Miranda Lambert.

But in the first photo she looks like Linda Blair, IDK…

  18. Hakura says:

I think, in the ‘vintage’ B&W shots, the exaggerated darkness of her lips is what’s bothering me. She has such naturally full lips to begin with, that the dark coloration really makes it come across as making her look like a ‘Vixen’.

I think her lips are what look sort of odd (in general)… Remind me of those ‘wax lips’ you get as a kid.

I’ve never seen her as an actress, & this is the first interview I’ve seen, so I’ll withhold judgement.

  19. Alexandria says:

She’s beautiful but yes, her lips are very “Jolie-esque” and I feel that’s what Shiloh or Vivienne will look grown up. In Dark Shadows her character had a very sexual aura about her, and it made me uncomfortable because I know how young she is. She’s very talented though and I can see her becoming the “next” sort of Jennifer Lawrence type.

    • Dev4 says:

@Alexandria: Regarding Moretz becoming the “next” Jennifer Lawrence type of actress, Chloe Moretz actually co-starred in a film with Jennifer Lawrence called The Poker House playing sisters growing up in a whorehouse (their mother was played by Selma Blair) Lawrence and Moretz were both amazing in the film. Tough to watch, but the performances are fantastic.

  20. Moec23 says:

Was that blue sweater with the stars the same one that Zooey Deschanel had on in pics yesterday? I could be wrong but I swear its the same one!

  21. Moec23 says:

Was that blue sweater with the stars the same one that Zoe Deschanel had on in pics yesterday? I could be wrong but I swear its the same one!

  22. Allie says:

I used to follow Ed Sheeran on twitter and he responded to a link she posted about being a 90’s child and how she misses that decade. So being 16 makes her birth year 1997. Girl, you are not a 90’s child. I don’t know why it annoys me but it does. Ok, end rant.

  23. duchess of hazard says:

I think Mortez will be fine because she doesn’t seem to be supporting her family (her dad’s some sort of surgeon, her mom is her manager, and her brothers are very protective). She’ll be fine. Yeah, that look is a bit too old for her, but considering actresses age out of Hollywood come thirty (unfair) just as well.

  24. Kristine says:

I think the look is fine. It’s just that she has such a.. sexual allure.. that it looks a bit inappropriate. That has nothing to do with her or what she can control is just her physical attributes. I think she is so beautiful. I can’t wait to see Carrie by the way.

  25. mkyarwood says:

Didn’t Miley pose fully nude in a bathtub at 16? She has a ‘thing’, an ‘it’ or whatever they call it. I think she looks good!

    • blaize says:

At 15 she wore jeans and a bedsheet for VF. The photo you’re talking about came out when she was 19, but was taken when she was 18.

  26. Emily C. says:

I love that suit. I want it.

I actually prefer the black and white pictures to the “modern” ones. She looks more in charge in them. Also, her mouth is closed. I don’t like the combination of sexy and childlike that is prevalent in styling young actresses.

  27. Sloane Wyatt says:

Chloe is stunningly beautiful, and I enjoyed her in “Hick” and “Dark Shadows”. She was the best thing about both lackluster films.

Yet, I worry she may be partying like a young Drew Barrymore.

  28. Alarmjaguar says:

OMG, are those shoulder pads!? But, I do like the suit idea

  29. Mew says:

Too young to have red lipstick and have black and white photo taken? Yeah, better put that age limit to 50 years old. Just in case.

  30. Lark says:

She’s a great little actress, but I do worry that she may be down a path. Lainey is full of it a lot of the time, but she and Ted C both mentioned (without doing a blind) seeing her smoking and or acting too adult when she was 13/14.

  31. Noodles says:

As a parent, I was more concerned with the language and violence used for her character in Kick-Ass (at the age of 12 while filming) than I do with this photoshoot. I am VERY wary of over-sexualization, and while I agree the photo is a bit sultry, it could have been much, much worse.

  32. Ginger says:

A lot of models are the same age she is now only difference is that she’s an actress. Models are routinely photographed in see through clothing or very little and no one makes a fuss. I’m not saying its right but what’s the difference here? She is fully clothed and looks great. Definitely age appropriate.

  33. Mayda says:

Shes covered up, I don’t see the issue

  34. nordicgoddess says:

the disturbing thought is that we see 4 year old made up and posed like this on toddlers and tiaras… compared to that she’s just a teen playing dressup.

  35. Jennifer12 says:

Now Winona Ryder is vintage? *facepalm* Feeling OLD….

  36. Really? says:

L O V E those wedge low boots with the straps!

On another note, I’m curious if she’s tampered with her lips?

    • Trek Girl says:

No, I really doubt that she did anything to her lips. Her lips look like her mother’s lips.

  37. Madpoe says:

the only celeb I know that share’s my bday!

I adore the white dress and boots pix myself.

  38. anon33 says:

This is reminding me of when I was in middle school.

I got my period when I was 10. I had C cups and a badonk by 7th grade (yes, by age 11), and I have always had very full lips. Mothers of other girls in my class literally called me a slut and didn’t allow me to their homes, even though I never actually DID anything, and was never sexually active (OR EVEN “DATED” like their daughters were) in middle school. They assumed that because I had a sexualized looking body, which was totally out of my control, that I must have been a slut.

I don’t know if I am making the connection clear. This just seems like the same type of gross overreaction to me. It doesn’t seem fair to her. So she is wearing dark lipstick in a magazine shoot…and…? If you had put dark lipstick on my lips when I was EIGHT they would have looked like that-that’s just what my lips have always looked like, pretty much since I was a toddler. The speculation as to whether she’s done anything to them is…questionable.

  39. tessy says:

She looks cute when she smiles. I don’t care for the sullen poses, but at least they don’t have her mouth hanging open.

  40. RPG says:

Sorry, but this is such a tryhard photoshoot on many levels (esp. the old-time B&W pics). You wouldn’t see the likes of S. Ronan or Mia W., who are far superior actresses, getting gussied up like this in a million years. The perpetual pout isn’t doing anything for me either.

I had the misfortune of sitting through Dark Shadows and Chloe was terrible, but to be fair she wasn’t the only one.

  41. UsedToBeLulu says:

They ruined her eyebrows in that photo shoot. She has naturally gorgeous ones – no need to over-brush AND powder them.

  42. chloe says:

I was looking at these pictures thinking my God this girl is beautiful, but now seeing her red carpet pictures and the Glamour photos you can see where they photoshopped her chin and face smoother and thinner. She is a pretty girl, I find it sad that shop a teenager, I do like the B/W pics. I think if you took the makeup off of all of Hollywood you might be able to pick out a 3rd of people.

  43. Renee says:

I love that suit. Can’t wait to see what kind of roles she gets in early twenties. She’s got a lot of potential as an actress who will be around a long time. The girl has talent.

  44. Str8Shooter says:

She looks very classy, glammed-up, old school Hollywood. Put those first couple of pix along side other starlets of the ’30s or 40s and she’d fit right in. Beautiful girl.

  45. LaurieH says:

She’s not classically beautiful, but she is highly photogenic. She is only 16; she is one of those girls who will grow into her look, much like Angelina Jolie and Marion Cotillard. If you asked me 20+ years ago if I thought these photos were too sexualized for a 16 yr old, I would have said yes. But in 2013, I’ve become inured to the sexualization of girls. Yes, the photos are a bit provocative, but it’s no worse than how some 6 yr old are dressed up for pageants (don’t get me started). I am routinely shocked at the clothes being marketed to young girls and I don’t understand why they are in such a damn hurry to grow up.

    • Trek Girl says:

It’s pretty normal for girls, and children in general, to want to grow up quickly. That is nothing new at all. My gosh, that’s a tale as old as time.

The question is not “Why do they want to grow up so quickly?”, the question is “Why are so many adults ok with letting their children do things that aren’t age appropriate?”.

Now, to me clothes and makeup are the least of the worries when it comes to growing up quickly. If you work that right as a parent you can help your child have fun with how they look and head off several forms of rebellion.
What Chloe does in these pictures is basically just dress-up — not a big deal. The same goes for most pageants and other occasions where we see girls and young ladies in clothing that many people think are objectionable as well: it’s basically just dress-up. Of course we have to be careful with how children play dress up when older children and adults are going to see them, but in general, it’s really not something to be worried about. Actions are what matter the most.

      • Trashaddict says:

When girls this age are “basically dressing up” they are trying on their adult personas. Part of our job as adults is to give them feedback on how that persona comes across. I remember doing this at her age but I had my parents’ reaction which told me I had gone over the line. You have these very “come hither” looks in the photos but you can still see the last bit of baby fat in her cheeks. We are walking into “Lolita” territory here. I am so glad I’m not growing up right now, because trying to tell the difference between sexual freedom and sexual exploitation for a young woman now has got to be horribly confusing. When the adults aren’t setting any standards for behavior, what is a teenager supposed to do?
I do like her red carpet shots. She looks more her age there and the smile says she’s comfortable.

  46. Side-Eye says:

Those first two pictures are horrible. And she’s not bad-looking so I don’t know what the hell is going on there.

  47. Meanchick says:

Since WHEN does H-wood care about little girls dressed up like vixens? Pressuring them to grow up quick is in the H-wood Bible isn’t It?

  48. blaize says:

Nothing about this seems inappropriate for a girl who’s only 5 years younger than me. I think as a society we have a hard time treating teenagers in a balanced way-especially the girls. People are either letting 16-year-olds get breast implants, walk around in their panties, and bang/marry middle-aged guys, (Stodden, Momsen, and some other girl I don’t remember) or freaking out because some 16-year-olds are wearing lipstick or because her back is showing. Or we brand an 18-year-old (of either gender and of any sexual orientation) a pedophile for the rest of his or her life for having consensual sex with a 16-year-old.

  49. Jade says:

Hmm I actually consider the young Brooke Shields a “sexual-looking girl” if there is such a term. I feel a kind of guilt or conflict when I saw her teen pics and I can’t imagine how men feel.

For her, not so much though she is attractive. The photoshoot is ok to me but I fear that’s because I am numb to such images.
