Cate Blanchett laughs off Oscar speculation for ‘Blue Jasmine’: good strategy?

Yesterday (or the day before), Cate Blanchett premiered Blue Jasmine in Sydney, which is her hometown. I don’t think Woody Allen (who wrote and directed the film) even came to the premiere – but he rarely comes to any premiere anyway. We don’t have the photos – you can see them here. Cate wore orange and I’m shocked to discover that Cate is one of those rare people who look great in orange.

While she was on the carpet, she fielded a ton of questions about this year’s Oscars and whether she thought she would be getting an invitation to the big show for her critically-acclaimed performance in Blue Jasmine. When she was told that she’s currently the odds-on favorite for Best Actress, Cate winningly laughed it off, saying: “It’s nice but what month are we in? That’s short hand for people saying they liked the character.” She’s playing this very well. Probably because in the grand scheme of things, I don’t think Cate really cares. Would she like another Oscar? Sure, but she’s not going to campaign for it. She’s got other stuff on her plate and she has priorities in order. And that natural reticence will work in her favor, mark my words. She really is the front-runner for the Best Actress Oscar.

Cate also had high praise for Woody, saying: “It’s a strange thing meeting one of your heroes, but he was fantastic. It exceeded my expectations. If he doesn’t like something he says so and if he does like it he moves on. He’s very direct…. think most people [want to sign up immediately] when they hear Woody Allen wants to work with them. Apart from being a great filmmaker and auteur, he’s an incredible dramatist.” Yeah, in case you’re wondering: Hollywood doesn’t hate Woody at all. They adore him. He just won his billionth Oscar a few years ago for Midnight In Paris. But Woody won’t campaign either – he’ll do even less to support Blue Jasmine’s Oscar chances than Cate.

I didn’t care for Woddy Allen city-films, but after the trailer I really want to see Blue Jasmine. it appears really interesting.

I personally couldn’t stand midnight in Paris, but I really want to see this. Mainly because of Cate though.

      • Kiddo says:

Surprisingly, I liked it, for the whimsy.
Although I didn’t see it in the theater and watched it at home while under the weather. The one strong deal breaker, for me, would be, if like in all the other films, the protagonist mimics Allen’s speech pattern. That is very distracting and seems to occur in almost all of his films. I wonder if the actors do it to please him by playing a literal homage of him, or if he directs them to speak as if he is talking.

      • Andrew says:

You’re very right about that. I think I didn’t like Midniggt because I just didn’t care for any of the characters…I thought they were all kind self obsessed (except maybe Kathy Bates lol, have loved her since I saw Misery).

      • Jayna says:

I didn’t like it either. I was bored in that movie. I was so looking forward to renting it after hearing great things about it, and was disappointed. I adored Vicky Christina Barcelona, though. Woody is hit or miss for me. Sometimes he hits it out of the ballpark, sometimes not.

      • NYC_girl says:

I saw it a few weeks ago. It was not easy to watch and pretty heavy. There were a few funny moments but it is not a comedy – the clips I’ve seen seem to portray it like that slightly. I was very uncomfortable watching most of the movie.

    • Jules says:

I saw it last weekend and it was absolutely fantastic! Definitely check it out!

  2. brin says:

She can do no wrong. As long as she doesn’t do an Anne Hathaway campaign, which she would never do, she is golden!

  3. Tapioca says:

Go Cate! She deserves a BA Oscar to make up for the one that was stolen from her by Harvey Weinstein and the Goopster.

  4. smee says:

That black dress! The suit & sandals! Showing off her elf ear in the white! Flawless.

  5. blue marie says:

    great answer, she is lovely.

    • j.eyre says:

It is a good answer. It really feels like you are damned if you do, damned if you don’t with these things. Answer affirmative or be seen and you want it too much, smile politely and say nothing or go about your business and you don’t care and don’t deserve it.

  6. Maria says:

the less campaigns the better. why not just vote for the person who you think did the best job and not who shaked your hands and invited you to a nice party?

  7. Baskingshark says:

Laughing off one’s Oscar chances while looking devastating. Hmmm, interesting tactics, Cate. I shall call this gambit “The Anti-Hathaway Maneuver”.

  8. Shannon1972 says:

She is flawless. Absolutely love, love, love her!

I don’t usually pay much attention to the awards season beyond what the actresses are wearing, but I will be actively rooting for her this year.

  9. lower-case deb says:

is she still managing the sydney theatre company? i suppose she has better things to worry about than chasing statuettes, although it’s nice to have.

hope she won’t start campaigning crazy, but she seems like the kind of person who is confident enough to let her ability speaks for itself and takes genuine pride in a good day’s work.

translates to the way she carries herself with her fashion too. it just comes across as genuine, so even fashion that is “eh” to usor “try hard” on other people just seems fine or great or “just her”.

    • Jayna says:

I thought that was her husband.

      • lower-case deb says:

oh that’s right! i just googled it (after i posted this, should’ve google first post later next time!).
she’s no longer co-artistic director as of last year. she was though, from 2009-2012. the website now list her husband as [sole] artistic director.

i wonder what new projects she’ll be tackling. i don’t hear many projects on the hollywood horizon. broadway?

  10. Jayna says:

I went opening weekend. It was a good movie, not great. The film is worth seeing because of Cate. She was absolutely amazing in all her character’s glorious delusional grandeur. The actress who played her sister was good also. I didn’t even recognize Andrew Dice Clay in the movie until I read a review after and they said a certain part was his. Alec Baldwin was great as usual.

I don’t know if it’s the high def or just always in Woody Allen movies, but Cate did look older than the last time I saw her, but sometimes I think it’s the harsh lighting in his movies. I could see the darn large pores on the end of her nose. I don’t go to movies for that much realism. LOL

She is such an elegant woman, a rarity in Hollywood anymore really. Rachael Weisz is another one that is that way.

If anyone on here has never seen Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench in Notes on a Scandal, rent it. It’s fantastic and they are both tremendous in it. Cate blew me away in that movie.

    • Notthatone says:

Yes! Notes on a Scandal is a must watch.

    • Bijlee says:

Even in the poster she looks “old.” What I mean is that she looks human and her wrinkles arent airbrushed within an inch of her life. I like that. I want to see blue jasmine after watching the trailer. It looks fantastic.

    • Notthatone says:

Notes on a Scandal is a must watch.

  11. DavidBowie says:

THIS woman is heaven. I heart her.

  12. Lilyvanilli says:

Cate lives in Sydney but her hometown will always be Melbourne. Her style is very much that city.

  13. Leah says:

I read some reviews of the movie and they are all practically saying her oscar nom is guaranteed. I hope she wins best actress this time, its long overdue.

  14. Maya says:

I have the actual Oscar 2014 winners list (I hope it happens this way;)

Best Actor – Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 years a slave)
Best Sup Actor – Michael Fassbender (12 years a slave)
Best Actress – Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
Best Sup Actress – Lupita Nyong’o (12 years a slave)
Best Director – Steve McQueen (12 years a slave)
Best Picture – Brad Pitt (12 years a slave)

As you can all see I WANT/DEMAND 12 years a slave win them all;)

    • Chanel says:

12 years a slave will probably be nominated for sure 🙂 I really hope American Hustle, The Counselor and The Butler(I’m seeing it next week) will too.

      • Maya says:

I hope The Counselor gets nominated as well. I havent seen nor do I plan to see The Butler – I dislike Oprah and wont see anything she is in.

      • Andrew says:

I’m actually really hoping the secret life of Walter Mitty is good and hopes it gets some noms. Rooting for American hustler also. I also dislike Oprah, but she is one damn good actress and was absolutely great in The Butler.

      • bluhare says:

I must be missing something because how can you want a movie you haven’t seen to win?

    • Kiddo says:

So I’m just going on a hunch here, but I’m thinking you might have enjoyed 12 years a slave. Yeah, I know, it’s out there that I’m saying this, but I think I have telepathy.

      • Maya says:

lool yes I cannot tell you how but I have actually seen the movie and it is brilliant. I actually cried watching it (I have never cried for a movie before) and I wanted to kill Michael’s character – that man is amazingly good as the villain. So much so that you personally want to beat him to death.

PS: Brad is in it and he plays an important role. He is the deciding point in the story and he did justice to the role.

PPS: The reason I cannot say when and where I saw the movie is because I could lose my job. You can believe or not – up to you…

      • Chanel says:

Honestly, this year, I have no idea who will win but I think it could be something like this:

Best supporting actor: Jeremy Renner, American Hustle

Best supporting actress: Oprah, The Butler. ( according to the critics)

Best actor: Brad Pitt, The Counselor.

        Best picture: ?????

Best actress: Nicole Kidman( Grace Kelly)

      • Kiddo says:

@Maya, If you told me, you’d have to kill me, and at least one of us doesn’t want that to happen.

      • Maya says:

@ Kiddo: I dont mind killing you but I do mind losing my job;)

@ Chanel: Brad only has a small role in the Counselor so I dont see him getting a sup nomination next year.

  15. Nikita says:

i look great in orange too, i do 🙂
i want to see that movie

  16. Ai says:

I forever love her style and I want to see this movie just because of her; not a fan of WA films.

  17. Kelly says:

She is so lovely in every way. Great style! The anti-Gwyneth Paltrow.

And, heh, I like Anne Hathaway.

  18. mom2two says:

I think her answer about the Oscar is great. And she’s right, considering that many of supposed Oscar bait movies have not been released yet, isn’t too early to forecast.
That being said, I think she’s wonderful and if she is nominated, I’ll be rooting for her to win.

  19. Melissa says:

Cate is elegant as always but Blue Jasmine’s storyline is a blatant Streetcar rip-off, I initially presumed it was a modern adaption.

  20. INeedANap says:

She’s beautiful, but is it just me or do her eyes look a little…surprised? Mini lift?

  21. lucy2 says:

She looks amazing, and always handles herself with such class. I’m looking forward to seeing this film.

In general I don’t care for most of Woody Allen’s movies, but I did love Midnight in Paris.

  22. Joan says:

She’s beautiful, she’s talented and she has class. There are only a handful of actresses who got what she got. Not so fond of her working with pedo Woody Allen, but that guy is surely a good storyteller and filmmaker, have to give him that. I will watch the movie just because of Cat.
