Is Prince Felipe & Letizia’s marriage ‘in crisis’? Letizia ‘flees Mallorca’ for Zurich

I’m always surprised by the number of requests we get to cover other royal families beyond Monaco and the United Kingdom. I’ve been trying to do more coverage of the other European royals over the past few years, to mostly positive results, but I’ve yet to really devote a post to Spanish royals Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia. Felipe and Letiza have been together for a little more than a decade – they announced their “surprise” engagement in 2003 after a whirlwind courtship and they were married the next year. Felipe is the crown prince, or heir, to the throne of Spain. He and Letizia have two children together, daughters Leonor and Sofia. Previous “scandals”: this is Letizia’s second marriage – her first marriage only lasted a year, 1998-1999. And she had a career before marrying Prince Felipe – she was a journalist and a TV news anchor. Also, she’s really “peasanty”. She has no royal or noble blood whatsoever.

Anyway, I’m talking about them now because suddenly last week there were several interesting pieces of gossip about Letizia and Felipe’s marriage. Apparently, their marriage is being described as “in crisis” by the Spanish and European press and Letizia is said to have “fled” her husband’s home in Mallorca for an unplanned and sudden trip to Switzerland. Here’s more:

Princess Letizia of Spain is in breaking news for the alleged crisis in her marriage to Felipe de Borbon, heir to the crown. A few days ago, Letizia left the island of Mallorca, the traditional summer destination of the royal family, leaving behind her husband and their daughters, Princesses Leonor and Sofia. After returning to Madrid, she took a flight to the Swiss city of Zurich, where the press lost her trail. Her final destination may be a remote resort where she can find enough peace and privacy to reflect on what´s going on with her marriage and public responsibilities that seem to increasingly overwhelm her.

It´s no surprise that princess Letizia does not like spending her holidays on Mallorca. While this summer she has only spent five days on the island, in recent years she even asked her former colleagues in the press to leave her alone, since she was trying to take a vacation. Maybe the Princess forgets that her staying on the island, even if only for a few days, is part of her duties as the heiress to the crown. Once they are over, she usually enjoys her own luxurious and private holidays with her husband and their daughters, paid for entirely by the Spaniard people.

But it would seem that lately, appearing polite and friendly with the media and people in Mallorca is an exhausting job for Letizia and she’d rather be left alone. Prince Felipe, who returned to Madrid a few days after his wife, is in Paraguay to mark the inauguration of the new president, Horacio Cartes. It is unknown if after he completes his official duties will meet his wife or continue to spend a lonely summer.

Felipe and Letizia got married in 2004 after a short courtship. Public opinion was shocked when a story emerged that the attractive heir had chosen the evening news presenter as his wife. Not only was she a woman with no links to the stale world of the aristocracy, but she was also a divorcée. She soon lost the freshness she displayed during her years as a bright young journalist, and became a woman with a tense air and increasingly artificial look, the result of her continuing aesthetic makeovers.

Her cold, controlled style does not bring forth the sympathies of the Spaniard citizens, even though she used to be one of them. Recently, Spanish media reported that the Princess felt under so much pressure that she asked Felipe to give her some private space, away from the cameras and also from her husband´s friends, members of the aristocracy used to a life of luxury and privilege that Letizia doesn´t relate to.

The Princess, who is 41, prefers dancing at indie music festivals, meeting her friends at trendy rooftop bars and even shopping at chain stores downtown, like any other woman her age. She´s usually escorted by her old group of girlfriends, with whom she can relax and stay away from the public eye. Her friends, even though they are journalists, have shown absolute loyalty and there are no pictures of Letizia´s nights out on the town.

2013 is becoming a turbulent year for the Spanish monarchy. The scandals follow one another in quick succession making the Borbon no longer the untouchable family they were a few years ago, when neither politicians nor journalists dared to criticize some of their behaviors. Things have changed.

The trial against Inaki Urdangarin, husband of Princess Cristina (the youngest daughter of Juan Carlos and Sofia), accused of alleged misappropriation of public funds for personal gain, has caused public outrage. Juan Carlos himself also lost his respectable image after traveling to a hunt in Botswana with his alleged mistress, Princess Corinna. And, although he publicly apologized, many Spanish citizens are tired of giving their taxes away to a family they feel alien to the harsh reality of their country.

With her fussy and unprofessional attitude, it seems very unlikely that Letizia will ever become the savior of the Spanish Crown. Bad news for the more traditionally-minded citizens, but encouraging for those who believe the monarchy is an obsolete, useless institution in the XXI century.

[From Voxxi]

That was a super-bitchy article, right? But it gives you an idea of what we’re dealing with. Can you imagine if a UK newspaper wrote about the British monarchy this way? Heads would roll! Here’s something that surprised me: although Letizia has tried to play the “modern monarchy” game which Prince William & Duchess Kate are currently playing, Spanish outlets say that the Spanish people aren’t buying it and that Letizia’s popular support has taken a nose dive. She’s seen as “rigid” and like she doesn’t know how to interact with people. There are rumors that she’s addicted to plastic surgery too. YIKES.

Latin Times also has a story that I’ve never heard before now – Letizia’s cousin David Rocasolano wrote a tell-all book about Letizia and he says that she had an abortion one year before she met Felipe. And the cousin says Letizia and Felipe signed a prenup which said that if Letizia ever left Felipe, he would get custody of their kids. Modern Monarchy, y’all.

She does seem like a robot at their appearances. Her sister was coming/came out with a book about how she had multiple abortions before getting married and all that kind of stuff.

    • Liv says:

How lucky one can be having siblings like that.

    • My2Pence says:

Actually, it was a cousin who wrote that book, one who was her lawyer and breached confidentiality agreements. He may or may not end up losing his license for it. This was a cousin who was rumored to have gone to Letizia to gain political favors, and when she said no, he decided to turn against her.

There is at least one site – much like FF – that is dedicated to the most vicious, unreasonable, over-the-top hatred for this woman and everything she does. I think she has done remarkably well all things considered.

She works hard, dresses in inexpensive Spanish-brand clothing rather than designer day-wear, and they *returned* some of their tax-payer funding last year because they made internal budget cuts. She and Felipe seem to be the best and brightest of that blighted family. She just can’t win with some people.

      • Kiki says:

I am currently in Spain on vacation and have met many friendly Spaniards. No one, absolutely no be can stand this woman. I bought her cousin’s book. It is quite interesting. This article forgot to mention that she posed nude while she was studying in Mexico.

    • Osito says:

Hm… I guess I just wonder about why it’s so important that she may or may not have had an abortion (or several! or a million!). What she has done with her reproductive abilities doesn’t really tell the world anything about who she is as a princess of whatever, right? I mean, speculating about her plastic surgery implies that she’s vain and spends lots of money of things that may be frivolous, but I just can’t tell what speculating about abortion is supposed to imply about her. That she didn’t want to have a baby with whoever her partner was at the time? Because that’s what it tells me…

  2. QQ says:

Well Both Sofia and Cristina married the Most shady ass motherfuckers, who didnt even look livey dovey ever towards them, I thought these two did but i Imagine that for her, she was an anchorwoman, in TVE this is becoming stiffling, sorta like what happened to Masako in japan, is a lot of responsibility and having to be on at all times with pretty rancid people!

Unlike Crumpets over in England the sole upgrade or training she got legit was that ahe went from localish news to more plum stories before BOOM! Oh BTW yall im marrying the Prince in 3 months!

    • Tatiana says:

I think the only normal one is th Infanta Elena. Even her now ex husband with all his eccentricities seems normal compared to the rest.

  3. QQ says:

Also forgot to say, Spanish press Like Hola and assorted magazines an gossip shows Is MAD BRUTAL AND DISRESPECTFUL as fuck

    • Pixiestix says:

      QQ,

      So true.

    • Pixiestix says:

The vicious Spanish gossip scrutinizes every tiny detail & hair out of place ad nauseum.

I love Spain, & lived there when they got engaged & married — even saw them in Mallorca one Easter– they forever commented on her weight & being too skinny & even then they talked about marriage probs — that gal cannot win. I feel for her, and hope there is nothing to these rumors.

    • spaniard says:

The press can be bitchy and disrespectful, I agree, but I think is even more disrespectful to misapproppiate public funds and going on a super expensive holiday with your mistress to kill elephants in Botswana when the country you are supposed to represent is enduring the worst economic crisis in its history.

Hopefully we will get rid of these people eventually.

  4. Anaya says:

Letizia does have the cold, rigid look to her. Perhaps it’s because of the botox? Anyway she seems to lead a charmed life but it still must be tough going from commoner to princess. Most of the women who marry into royalty with the top prince seem to often find themselves feeling immense pressure, scrutinized, or like they don’t really belong. Not everyone can cope with that. Maybe she and her prince can weather the storm. Maybe not. Time will tell.

  5. Christine says:

That is one of the bitchiest articles I’ve ever read on her! I cannot stand the shade thrown at women whose every move is photographed and dissected. Also, if there is marital strife, I’m guessing her husband sleeping around is the cause. Like father, like son, non?

  6. Anna says:

I always likes Leti, and a couple of months ago there were so paparazzi photos of her and Philipe taking an evening stroll together, very affectionate and loved up. Although Leti does usually look pretty stiff at formal engagements (also: less greay pantsuits please!) she and Philipe are very warm with each other when spotted together off-duty. So I hope the rumors are wrong.

Re: plastic surgery OD – I think hers isnt that bad. She clearly had a nose job and maybe mild lip fillers, I think both look good. My only issue is that she overdoes Botox, but I might too, if I were being photographed all the time.

  7. dahlianoir says:

A mother who wants some space ? OMGERD CALL THE WOMEN POLICE !!

Seriously, she’s one of the few honest spanish royals, let her be.

  8. Paloma says:

She is absolutely beautiful, unlike the celebrities people fawn over for no reason whatsoever. I hope she can find happiness.

  9. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I find it shocking that any woman would sign a prenup stating that her husband would get custody of their children if she left him, or that she would be asked to do so. Granted, I dont know all of the details, but I can’t think of a single woman I know well who would consider that. Now she’s trapped unless she can break that agreement or doesn’t care about the custody issue. No wonder she’s unhappy.

    • mslewis says:

These are royals. They aren’t like us. I think it is pretty common for a prenup like this to be signed, especially when one of the children is heir to the throne. It doesn’t mean that she won’t be able to see her children, just that the children will live with the monarch.

    • LAK says:

That clause in a prenup is pretty standard for royals.

It’s one of those arcane laws that is still very much a part of Royal houses. The people who marry Royals are essentially genepool contributors because all Royal children belong to the Royal house.

You divorce, the royal children remain with the royal house. You get what they decide to give you.

A thought to ponder for Royal title chasers.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I see what you both mean, but it seems she could have held out for joint custody, at least. It wouldn’t be worth it to me to sign away control of my children, but being famous or social climbing has never been important to me, either.

Do either of you know if Charles and Diana had joint custody? I always thought they did.

      • CC says:

Weren’t William and Harry in boarding school by the time the divorce was concluded?

      • LAK says:

CC – The children were in boarding school already.

GoodNamesAllTaken – It’s not a prenup that is negotiable like an ordinary prenup. I don’t even think that’s the right term for the document they sign though a prenup is the best description.

Here is the kicker. Whilst Royals aren’t above the law, there exist laws that are specific to them and their status as royals such that they can trump regular laws if they choose to exercise the royal laws.

Children belonging to the royal house falls in this category.

Part of Diana’s biggest worries was that the boys would be taken from her, and played that up in the media. She was given reassurances that they would not and shared custody was worked out. And only because the royal house chose to accept that arrangement as part of the divorce negotiations.

      • Flower says:

There is a little known British Law called ‘the Grand Opinion of 1717’ which states that the Monarch is the legal guardian of their grandchildren, even if both parents are alive.

The same thing applied to Sarah Furguson, that is why there was never a word about custody with either divorce. Diana wanted to take the boys to Canada for the summer holidays but the Palace wouldn’t allow it, she went on holidays with Dodi instead.

  10. mslewis says:

I’ve followed the Spanish royals since Juan Carlos married Sofia. It was a beautiful wedding. I was as surprised as anyone when Felipe married Letizia because she did not look very warm or happy then and she still doesn’t. She always looks very cold, even in photos with her girls. It’s just her look, I guess.

I do think Felipe loved her because he chosed her over all those p0rn stars, models and actresses he loved to date back in the day. I have a feeling his parents were so relieved when he didn’t marry one of those that they readily accepted Leticia.

Hope this crisis comes to an end quickly because the Spanish royals don’t really need another scandal from this family.

  11. Kat says:

I’m Spanish and I can tell that most of Spanish people are sick of this family. Sick of their scandals with elephant, sick of the husbands stealing public money, sick of the king apologizing too late… There are people wanting back the republic, people really hate the royal family, and the media know that, and writes about that, and even conspires. As I guess you know, Urdangarin, that goodlooking guy who married Cristina, is now involved in some dirty bussines and allegedly everybody in the family knew about that and just asked him to stop it. The only people in this family who are not screwed are Letizia and Phillip, at least by now, not even spanish media got something really interesting to say about them.
The situation in Spain is really really terrible when most of the politicias are envolved in corruption affaires, even Mariano Rajoy, the president! We have the worst politicians in Europe, recesion, a Royal Family full of surprises with their own corruption affaires, people in the streets asking for take the Republic back… People have no jobs, the government almost destroyed the hospitals and se medical services, they are creating laws against abortion, and tried to go back with the one of the same sex marriage… All that happened and is happening in Spain, but, hey guys, Leti leaves Mallorca, where i’m sure are spending the holidays some other members of this lovely family, to go to Zurich, where probably nobody’s going to yell at her calling her names, as it happens in Spain. I said probably nobody is going to do that, because most of spanish people have no money to travel to Zurich anyway…
Sorry for complaining so much about my country, but this kind of news makes me sick, really sick, people know nothing about Spain and the hopeless situation we are living.

    • bob says:

I know, it’s horrible at the moment, most of my Spanish friends are long term unemployed with no hope. I’ve headed back to the UK and it’s bad, but no where near as bad as in Spain.

I’ve heard a few first hand account of her being a snotty bitch to people but overall they’re the best of the bunch. What kind of person shoots an elephant?

  12. INeedANap says:

Hate her for whatever you want, but the fact that 1) her own family members revealed that she had an abortion, a very private medical procedure, and 2) the abortion is seen as “evidence” to her poor moral compass angers me. What she does with her own uterus is her own business.

  13. Yep says:

I never liked Letizia (sp?). Every picture or film of her at an event that I see her in, she always, ALWAYS, has a constant b*tch-face. She looks royally stuck up! Whenever I see this one, it makes me appreciate Kate Middleton’s pleasant and smiling face more.

I do love the fact that Letizia held down a full time job before marrying into Royalty, but she always looks like she feels everyone is beneath her in some way.

  14. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Prince Felipe is hot, that is him in the first pic right?

She’s really pretty too, though I can see the whole botox thing going on.

So why don’t the press like her? Because that was a seriously bitchy article.

  15. chrissy says:

As one with a resting bitch face I feel for Letizia. People just assume I’m cold or plotting someone’s demise when in all reality I’m pondering what’s for dinner. Like someone posted above, I think theres a lot more to report on in Spain than Letizia wanting a breather.

  16. Susei says:

Leonor and Sofia are the most beautiful royal kids. One day they will be stunning beauties.

  17. LULU says:

The name of the book is “Adios Princesa” and it was banned on Spain due to pressure from the royal family. You can find it on Amazon for $7.99. I read it. It was written by her first cousin David Ortiz Rocasolano who was her best friend and lawyer until she married Prince Felipe. This woman has a very bad reputation not only in Spain but in South America because of her arrogant behavior towards the people. According to the book, before she and Felipe got engaged she asked her cousin David to get all the records from the abortion clinic where she got an abortion performed, he paid someone at the officce and destroyed the records. The baby wasn’t Felipe’s, was from a previous relationship, but the big deal here is that Spain is the most Catholic country on planet earth, therefore, she could have never got married in a church or got a comunion again.

    • Kiki says:

Hey Lulu! I’m currently holidaying in Spain and I’m not sure the book is banned. I got it at a bookstore in Barcelona a few days ago. It cost 15 euros and I read it in two hours. It is very interesting!

    • My2Pence says:

      1) Please see point 12 above

      2) Whether or not she ever had one (which we do NOT know), abortion is legal in Spain and has been since before this alleged event MAY have taken place

      3) Letizia was not confirmed in the Catholic faith until just before the marriage

      4) Reconciliation (confession) prior to adult confirmation includes the ABSOLUTION OF ANY MORTAL SINS spoken or unspoken. In other words, she was in the State of Grace at the time of confirmation and any *perceived* previous sins were forgiven by God. Maybe not by you, but I’m assuming God’s judgment outranks human judgment in the Catholic church.

      5) I’ll bet Liechtenstein (and Vatican City / Holy See itself) are more Catholic than Spain. Spain legalized same-sex marriage in 2004, which doesn’t scream “Catholic” to me. And according to a recent survey, only 36 percent of Spaniards claim to be practicing Catholics.

  18. CC says:

Spain is going through a MASSIVE unemployment crisis, especially amongst the young. How can they be ok with the RF’s entitlement?

  19. pato says:

I know people that know her from her days as a journalist and some that had had contact with her as a princess and they all agreed, she´s a total bitch.
