Chris Hemsworth: ‘The paparazzi got bored with us, because we are pretty boring’

Here are some lovely photos of Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky at last night’s London premiere of Rush, the Formula One movie where Chris plays James Hunt. This is the first red carpet Chris has walked in months and months. He looks slightly uncomfortable, but maybe everyone looks slightly uncomfortable compared to Elsa’s overzealous joy at being around the cameras. Elsa’s jumpsuit thing is Elie Saab – I kind of like it, even though I think it’s kind of wrong for the premiere.

Interestingly enough, Elsa and Chris also did a big kiss for the cameras, which I’m sure she loved. One thing is clear – Chris wants us to think that he adores his wife. Is this strategy or is it genuine – or both? I just read Chris’s Telegraph interview, and after I finished it… I kind of think he just goes out of his way to be really respectful of Elsa and his marriage. I’m not joking, there is no punchline. While I think there’s something fishy going on with Chris these days, I’m not sure it’s about his marriage. You can read Chris’s full interview here.

He isn’t into driving fast in his real-life SUV: “It has a babyseat and surfboard in the back, it’s a pretty mellow thing. I go ‘Slow down, what’s the rush, there’s a red light.’ She says: ‘Shut up, when did you become a driving instructor?’”

On Rush: “I love the fantasy world and the movies I’ve been doing but it was nice not to be wielding some sort of weapon. I was looking for something more character-driven.”

Advice from Matt Damon: “Matt Damon once said to me, ‘Just stay boring. Don’t go spilling out of a club at four in the morning and you’ll be fine.’ The paparazzi got bored with us. Because we are pretty boring.”

On the real-life James Hunt: “Yeah. What I love about him, and I like to think I have, is a sort of childlike quality. There’s a cheeky little kid aspect to him. That sense of fun and adventure is something I find appealing. And sometimes I would love to act like he did. I’m not talking about the women,” he adds hastily. “I’m talking about how he says what he wants to say or the reaction he has to the reporter.”

Losing weight for Rush: “I went from about 215 [lb] to 185. That was painful. I’d much rather put on weight than have to lose weight. Basically I went from lifting weights and eating lots of protein to just the opposite: running, cardio, overtraining and undereating. My wife was pregnant at the time and she reminds me that I was moodier than she was.”

Trying to get James Hunt’s voice: “That is what I was most anxious about. I find the American accent much easier.”

Hunt’s issues: “There was an immense amount of talent there and if you funnel it into something it’s great but if it’s pointed in the wrong direction then it can be chaotic.” Hunt drank himself to oblivion, took drugs and ricocheted through women. “But the thing I found interesting,” says Hemsworth, “is that his ex-girlfriends all had very positive things to say about him. Over the last couple of years I’ve met three or four women who have said ‘I used to date James’ or ‘I slept with him’. And they all said he was a very sweet guy.” I ask if he thinks that Hunt’s behaviour was excusable. “No,” he says adamantly. “There were things he did that were absolutely inexcusable, like urinating in public. He said he was drunk and on a sleeping pill. Who knows? He was drunk at his own wedding.” Hemsworth laughs. “I was sober at mine. A little.”

His early role on Aussie soap “Home & Away”: “That was my biggest learning curve. I spent three-and-a-half years on the show. You shoot 20 scenes a day, five episodes a week, so you either sink or swim. If you can make it in that kind of environment, a movie set, where you have two or three days to do a scene and months to prepare, feels like a luxury.”

Coming to Hollywood: “I got a film fairly quickly and felt like I was on a roll. I would walk into auditions sounding like Crocodile Dundee, thinking, ‘This is going to be a novelty for them.’ Then I realised that there are a million other Australians here and I should just shut up.” The work dried up. “Everything stopped for nine months. I was about to go back home. I was sick of being told ‘no’. My pride was like [he makes a noise like a deflating balloon].” But things started to take an upturn when he decided that he no longer cared. “I lost that pent-up anxiety and desperation.”

Being recognized: “Thor,” he says, slightly wearily. “It overshadows everything.” Does he ever get sick of it? “You know…” he laughs, giving me a what-can-I-say look. “It’s great. I’m lucky. Thor has kicked off everything I’m doing and it’s been the greatest thing for me, but I am aware that I need to mix it up a bit.”

He’s still insecure: “That sort of insecurity still flares up, the idea that it could all end tomorrow. I’m more aware than ever of the frailty of it all. There’s a million and one examples of guys who were the guy or the girl and then overnight you never hear from them again.”

On Robert Downey Jr. getting $50 million for The Avengers: Age of Ultron: “I don’t get anything like that,” says Hemsworth with mock despondence. Yes, he agrees, “we’re talking obscene amounts of money” but, he points out candidly, he does not feel it is morally wrong. “When a film like that makes $1.6 billion, then whatever the fee that Downey gets is only relative. Who [should] get the money? Someone’s got to get it.”

The Fifty Shades of Grey rumor: “I keep hearing that rumour too,” he says, adding that he hasn’t read the book. “My friend’s sister read it and was like, ‘Yuck, I can’t think of Chris like that’.” Not that he has been officially approached to play Grey. “I think everyone’s name is in that hat,” he says with typical self-deprecation, adding with a laugh: “Look: if I took on that role [after James Hunt] it would begin to seem like typecasting.”

[From The Telegraph]

I like a lot of his quotes. And seriously, Matt Damon gets around, doesn’t he? Matty D is doling out advice to everybody these days. Okay, so that part made me chuckle. Chris might want to be boring and he might want the paps to ignore him, but Elsa does not. At all. Elsa is the one making sure the paps get their candid photos whenever Chris has a movie to promote. Let’s be real here. I wonder if Matty D gave Chris any advice about THAT.

    His wife is beautiful.

  2. Anna says:

I really like his interview. He always comes off pretty normal, and like he got all the charm genes in the family.

But these photos…while I LOOOOVE finally seeing this dreamboat out and about (just please, close one more shirt-button, Chris!), I get shivers just looking at Elsa eye-f*cking the camera in every single shot, being all MINE MINE MINE and LOOK AT MEEEEEE!

    • Marty says:

She even kept her eyes open when he kissed her! Although I did get a chuckle watching one of the premiere videos. She went to sign autographs but all of them were for Chris, so she just took a picture with one person then walked off. Hahaha. I’m a terrible person.

      • Anna says:

Oh my god that is precious. Just like when she handed her signed a$$ to a journalist interviewing Chris for GQ.

      • V4Real says:

I’ll say it again. This woman only career is a famewhoring wife. No directors or producers are beating down her door to offer her roles.

I wonder did she think by marrying Chris that he would be her ticket to movie roles. She knew he was going to be a Hollywood draw and she could enter into that club by marriage.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

He interviews very well. Smart, self-deprecating, and honest. I really like him.

    • j.eyre says:

Don’t touch a button on that CHemise, CHemboy.

      • Anna says:

YAAAAAY, she’s back! Can you even walk, after all this time in the attic?

      • Marty says:

Don’t you ever leave me again Miss J! I took to sleeping with your bonnet at night, just to feel close to you!

      • j.eyre says:

I wasn’t in the Attic all this time (oh, but thank you so much for checking on me up there, I see.)

I got an appointment at a preparatory academy a few towns over. They neglected to mention in the agreement exactly what I was supposed to be prepping those young, fertile minds for so I ran my own curriculum. It turns out the Head Master’s definition of French and mine differ rather vastly so… well, let’s just say I have much more free time on my hands.

Now, about turning over that Adonis you currently have your beautifully manicured fingers on…

      • j.eyre says:

@Marty – never again, darling. My most humble apologies. I think it was all EsCon’s fault. That errant nun will do anything to shoo people away from her hedgehogs when they are in heat. Don’t worry, I stashed her habit at the bottom of the flour box, that should keep her occupied for some time. Shall we?

      • Anna says:

Sure, ‘French lessons.’ And well, _I_ can barely walk after having CHarming nearly all to myself for the last few weeks here, so please, have at him – if you can pry him out of Remora’s claws, that is.

      • V4Real says:

Hi Ms. J. Good to hear from you. Your Blonde Adonis is looking pretty good. Also his movie Rush doesn’t look bad. I think I might check it out.
On a completely different subject did you guys hear the rumor that Zoe Saldana got married?

      • j.eyre says:

Hey V4 – I am getting very excited about the movie. I have liked the trailers but the reviews are good so far and they are pointing out both leads for their performances.

And oh my stars, if this boy wanted to shake me off his tail, he is going about it all wrong. I see I gave up my night vision goggles too soon.

And I was about to say that with all the touching and PDA, Remora is getting ready to announce pregnancy number 2. But I like Kaiser’s assessment much better.

    • QQ says:

I was gonna say “Chris Hemsworth: ‘The paparazzi got bored with us, because we are pretty boring’”

…But Elsa Keeps calling em anyways, Yes?

  3. Marty says:

Yeah Chris? If y’all are SO boring why do you get papped all the time? Let me think about that one.

That jumper is too high-waisted for Elsa. It would have looked better as a dress.

    • j.eyre says:

I actually love that jumpsuit. Although I, too, think it would make a fabulous dress, I would absolutely wear it as a jumpsuit (although that will confuse CHemboy for a moment, I’m sure)

Didn’t he look dashing last night? And so excited about the potential of Rush. I am positively giddy in anticipation. Have we made our date to go yet?

      • Marty says:

I do like it, but with her height the waist should have been lower. It makes her look stumpy…and no bra again. I’m so tired of seeing her nips.

Whenever you want Miss J! Actually so far the early reviews have all been postive. TFF is the next big step. I’m excited too!

      • Anna says:

IMDB just posted a Russia release date! I am SOOOOO excited. Now I am just hoping that one of the 2 Eng-lang theaters will play it! That voice…so dreamy…

  4. Andrea says:

I’ve never been over the moon for him but he comes across like a sweet, genuine guy. He’s one of those guys I find more attractive when he talks as opposed to less.

I know it’s popular to make fun of Elsa but he seems happy and seems to genuinely love her. He has nothing to gain by staying with a woman he doesn’t love. I believe he loves her and that they are happy.

    • V4Real says:

I believe he loves her as well, she is the one in question. A. Brody loved her too and look what she did to him. She was with Olivier Martinez two days after dumping Brody. Once Brody career started to fizzle she moved on to what she thought would be the next biggest thing.

    • The Original Mia says:

I tend to agree. He seems to love her and she him and India is adorable.

  5. heidi says:

Why not? She’s beautiful, motherly, has a very sexy accent, is well-educated, cultured and genuine. Of course his love is true. My eyes love drinking up photos of this couple, they make me smile.

  6. henderswife says:

I think they seem genuinely happy and are adorable. She does seem to be soaking all this fame up like a sponge and loving every second of it. He looks more laid back about it. If I were with him on the red carpet I’d be all over him Angelina and Billy Bob style. He is HOT!

  7. Hypocrisy says:

    I like that guy.

I love his decency, maturity in the relationship department and the fact that he isn’t so greedy about celebrity.

He strikes me as sweeter, more grounded and more stable than Cavill in that regard.

    His wife is lucky.

  8. tifzlan says:

Elsa Pataky makes me so uncomfortable.

    • Thinker says:

Me too. I’m in disbelief that anyone would feel otherwise, especially looking at these photos. She’s literally clinging to him. The body language is bizarre.

    • Kara says:

She gives me a weird vibe too..like something about her being married to him isn’t genuine. It’s the way she smiles & poses & I can see it in her eyes. He looks at her with love she sees…something else…

    • Viv says:

Body language here. He seems more like a trophy husband to her. But then on the other hand, Pataky always comes across really weird in the media. She’s a fameho and she doesn’t seem to get away from it. So what does a fameho want? More fame, so I think he’s a trophy husband. I wonder if someone like her can love him deeply enough–as he deserves. I’d place a bet if something happened to him, this woman would not stick around or be there for him. To me that’s a sign of true love. Anyone else?

  9. Lulu86 says:

am i the only one who thinks these two brothers acting is appalling?

  10. Mia 4S says:

The paparazzi got bored huh? It has nothing to do with the fact that you were overseas all summer? LOL, yeah OK dear. He’s with very savvy or incredibly naive! Or well controlled? I don’t care about his wife, she’s not talented or interesting, she’s irrelevant.

And yeah, he is way over Thor.

  11. TG says:

I think Elsa is gorgeous. Also like someo r said above Chris becomes more attractive in interviews. I like the down-to-earth types. I had never heard the fame whiting stuff about Elsa so my first pressions if her were that she was as low-key as Chris is. I still feel that way despite having read about her days with that cheesey Adrien Brody. I don’t see many pap pics of Chris and Elsa.

  12. Greata says:

These two lost me as soon as they started
parading their baby for the paparazzti. Chris always strikes me as someone who thinks his acting skills are way bettter than they really are. Sorry, Thor fans!

  13. Samtha says:

That outfit looks like the pantsuit my nana wears when she dresses up.

For someone so acutely aware of how quickly fame and success can fade, he’s been awfully contentious with the negotiations for the Thor franchise. He may not want to get typecast, but that role is the cornerstone of his career.

  14. Kate says:

The only attraction I have for him is his aussie accent. I love Australian accents. I even like them better than an English accent. English accents come off as cold where Australian accents seem more laid back.

  15. MademoiselleRose says:

He seems a really nice, down to earth guy. And he sure is easy on the eyes. I hope he keeps doing well. I don’t think he comes across like he thinks he’s the greatest actor ever. He knows he came from Home and Away, and sounds grateful to have been able to keep moving up the ladder. I doubt he thinks he’s Laurence Olivier and I’m sure he knows his look are a part of his success.

  16. Jen34 says:

He is so fine. His laid back personality makes him even hotter. His only negative is that clingy wife, but if he were mine, I would probably cling, too.

  17. Jenny says:

That is a beautiful man!! I think I like him a little better in Thor mode, a little beefier.
His attitude is really nice and he interviews very well; definitely ups the sexy. Seems like he loves his wife to bits, which is cute too. (I don’t even want to broach the EP discussion)

  18. Lucy says:

I like him. Nothing but the best for him!

  19. magpie says:

So much better with short hair. Would look even better if it wasn’t mullet length.

  20. Faye says:

Can someone explain who Elsa Patkay is and why shes getting so much hate? Also the Trailer for Rush looks amazing.

    • Mel says:

I second Fayes question. Why the hate?? I just googled her and the only remotely “scandalous” thing I could find was that Adrian Brody bought an old castle to impress her and she later left him. Which really isnt a scandal, you shouldnt have to stay in a bad relationship just because the guy was extravagant, right? So is the hate a fangirl jealousy thing or is there solid basis for it?

    • OhDear says:

NOT MY PERSONAL OPINION (I’m meh on her), but (1) she’s apparently Spain’s equivalent to Megan Fox (though personally I find Megan Fox more interesting) and (2) she’s disliked because she’s thought to be a famewhore and uses her relationships with more famous actors to career and social climb.

    • Libby says:

Adrien Brody had a fervent fanbase (dont laugh) and Pataky was widely believed to have broken the poor saps heart after he bought her a castle. Once you are cast in the role of Wicked Witch theres no coming back.

I always thought he bought the castle to rescue the relationship. You know like how Kobe bought his wife that crazy ring. In Adriens case the gamble didnt pay off – thats life y’all.

  21. ctkat1 says:

Matt Damon forgot the second part of his usual advice about how to be a big star and live in relative anonymity: first step is to be boring and not have any scandal in your personal life, AND the second step is to marry a woman with no interest in fame/not famous herself.

    So…sorry Chris.

  22. Relli says:

I feel like every article in which Elsa appears needs to have the link to the RIDICULOUS safari photoshoot where she cured world hunger with her smile and beauty. Because everyone always ask why the hate for an earth mother like Elsa? And really just looking at those pictures once and reading the article pretty much tells you much TRY this girl has in her.

Seriously once those have been seen it cannot be unseen.

  23. terrah. says:

i get a uk film magazine – total film. Rush gets 5 stars. this is quite unusual in this publication. could well be an excellent movie. he seems like a good guy and she is certainly comely. it’s all good. can’t help but feel sorry for his bruv………

  24. kim says:

He interviews well. I haven’t really seen him in anything besides Thor and I really hated that movie. I don’t really see me watching any of his movies in the future either…

  25. Vl says:

She poses like a female Tom Cruise.

  26. St says:

Well… Matt Damon was trying to become so boring that people believed him and ignored his new movie. That underperformed. Because he was boring to watch. Great job Matt.

Those actors try to escape paparazzi and fame by becoming boring are just stupid. So let’s check – J.Roberts is never pictured, doesn’t give interviews much and where is her career now? She has none. Sometimes appears in movies that flop.

Tom Hanks become boring as years went by and lost his A-list career. He is never pictured by paps.

Matt Damon hide himself so much from paps and people by becoming boring that all his latest moves flopped or underperformed. Elysium, Promised Land, We Bought a Zoo… He thinks that he will show up 2 weeks before premiere, go to every tv show to promote movie and that people will rush to see him. Well, it doesn’t happened like that.

Let’s compare it to career of such media and paparazzi regulars as Cloney, Affleck, Pitt… So yeah Chris, keep listening to Matt Damon’s advice and you will end up with people being bored by you and by ignoring your movies. That means end of A-list career.

  27. Camille (TheOriginal) says:

I like Chris. He comes across like a nice, down to earth bloke. His wife on the other hand…ugh. And she has had a terrible boob job, has anyone seen the front on pics over at Lainey? Her nipples are going in completely different directions it would seem.

  28. Dommy Dearest says:

God she’s really soaking the cameras up isn’t she?

    • Viv says:

Pataky really overdoes it, don’t you think? Cheesy. But on the other hand, maybe she is thrilled and happy to bits that he’s her man and that she is the one who is going home to his bed that night. I guess then I can hardly blame her for the spectacle she makes of herself.

      • Dommy Dearest says:

If that’s the case I’d be all smiles as well. But I doubt I’d pose like it’s my senior prom LOL

  29. Paulina says:

Love him, those Hemsworth men are so Brad Pitt.
