Miley Cyrus bodyshamed by Cher, who backtracks & tweets apology

Miley Cyrus

It didn’t take Liam Hemsworth’s new piece any time at all to receive attention from Us Weekly. Eiza Gonzalez has received a 5 Things to Know feature, which confirms what many of you noticed from yesterday’s before-and-after pics — girl has had some work done. Ah well.

Miley Cyrus is laying low since the breakup announcement and hasn’t been papped at all. Her Twitter page reveals she’s been rehearsing with backup singers. Miley also noted that “Wrecking Ball” is #1 all over the place. The naked video worked wonders.

There’s still plenty of controversy to be had regarding that video and Miley’s VMA performance. Cher (who is promoting her own upcoming album) stated that she is most certainly not a fan of Miley’s onstage antics:

Cher

On Miley’s VMA performance: “I don’t give a s–t if she comes out naked. Just be better, do better. Maybe she’s thrilled and delighted–everyone’s talking about it,” she said. “And so, that’s almost as good as it being great, you know. Especially kind of in this day and age. It doesn’t make any difference if you’re good. It just makes a difference if people are talking about it. I’m not old-fashioned. She could have come out naked, and if she’d just rocked the house, I would have said, ‘You go, girl.’ It just wasn’t done well. She can’t dance, her body looked like hell, the song wasn’t great, one cheek was hanging out. And, chick, don’t stick out your tongue if it’s coated.”

Will Cher twerk for us? “I don’t want to. I mean, I could if I wanted to. But, you know, if it looks like that I don’t think I’m interested. I’ve seen other girls do it better.”

[From USA Today and E! Online]

You know, I was with Cher up until the moment when she decided to say Miley’s “body looked like hell.” It’s true that Miley’s not much of a dancer, and “We Can’t Stop” is a lame song. Yes the bottom half of Miley’s costume was too small, so there was a lot of cheek showing. I’ll even get behind the criticism of Miley needing to brush her tongue before letting it hang into the next zip code. The body shaming though? Not cool.

Cher quickly caught wind of the fact that her statements made it to print. To her credit, she admitted to being “ashamed” of her words:

Pink also had something to say to E! Online about Miley’s act: “I think it’s tacky. She’s really freaking talented, she’s beautiful. She can sing her ass off and to go up there and do that? She’s cheating herself and she’s cheating the rest of us. She can do what she wants. People can like it if they want. I’m not going to buy it. She can do better. I’ve seen her do better.” Pink nailed it.

One final detail for today’s Miley update. Paula Patton visited “Today” and was asked about Miley’s twerking. Paula’s response? She twerked all over Al Roker. I guess she’s still cool with it!

I don’t think she’s talented, I think she’s gross. Body shaming aside, Cher nailed it; you don’t have to have talent anymore you just need a following.

    • amelia says:

+1 Apart from the ‘body looked like hell’ bit, she *is* right. So many people are discussing it, which probably counts as a victory in McTwerk’s camp.

      • Rosie says:

I just dont see this as body shaming. She isnt saying that the girl is too fat or skinny I dont think. She is saying that the ass was wobbly and untoned and seeing as the dance revolves around the ass, it kills the twerk.

      • itstrue says:

The bit about the coated tongue made my entire day. Soo soo funnny. Seriously, a closeup on the tongue requires a little prep.

      • Kim says:

So having an untoned ass = looking like hell?

    • mickey says:

I loved what Cher said, up until this as well: “her body looked like hell.” I just have no idea what Cher meant by that. (Not a fan of Miley, but her body is amazeballs.) Am I missing something or am I just too old to “get it?”

Also- could someone please get me a translator for Cher’s Tweets?

      • amelia says:

        Tmc;dr.
Too many capitals, didn’t read. I just moved into my new flat yesterday before uni starts, and I’m so freaking exhausted I simply couldn’t be bothered to filter through such crappy grammar.

      • LB says:

I know this will sound like more body shaming but her body does have some problem areas in the rump area. Which is ok, except she was marketting her body in that performance

Edit: What are the odds! Someone else posting here shares initials with me. Cool. I cant change my handle on this comment but I’ll use a different name hence forth.

      • Tina says:

Her buttocks looked sad and droopy. Plus everytime she moved they would quiver in a very I-dont-workout way.

    • V4Real says:

Miley needs to tone her ass up. Being skinny doesn’t always equates to having a good body. Look at Gaga’s ass; it was much better than Miley’s. Also Miley’s performance wasn’t good.

As for Cher, four words…. Turn Back Time video. Cher your ass wasn’t and still isn’t that great itself. I know some people love Cher but I don’t find her voice to be that great either. Now if it was someone who could sing like Mariah or Christina saying you don’t need talent these days I wouldn’t have much to say but Cher please shut up and sit down. You can only sing in one key. You have also pulled a lot of antics yourself.

      • Lflips says:

There is nothing inherently wrong with having an “untoned” body. What Cher said is body shaming because it implies that there is something wrong with her body. The problem isn’t Miley’s body, the problem is her lack of talent and revolting performance.

      • V4Real says:

I agree that Cher was body shaming her. I also agree that there is nothing wrong with not being tone but if you’re going to flash your goods to the world you best hit the gym first.

Same thing with Kate Upton who also loves to flash the goods. Tone it up. Like it or not people are going to have negative things to say when you’re half naked for all the world to see and your body is not that great.

      • carol says:

cardio, pilates, and yoga do not tone your body enough imo

      • Shannon says:

Gaga’s ass has been surgically enhanced. That’s so obvious. Maybe Miley needs a few injections to beef up her saggy cheeks.

      • anomie says:

Well…. not being a Cher fan… Turn Back Time video was released in 1989, the lovely and stylish Cher was born in 1946, making her 43 when the video was shot. I will spell it out Forty Three – old enough to be Miley’s mother and having a much nicer bum. A twenty year old has no excuse to have an flat bum, it’s not like she is working full time, anyway there is a wonderful option – save us from seeing you naked

    • paige says:

cher NAILED IT….and cher is the shit-she has stood the test of time. listen to some of her older songs. she had a great voice..pushed the envelope….cher got a tatoo in the seventies folks-she’s been leading the pack for years.
for the record miley is skinny – doesn’t make a good bod.

    • Stef Leppard says:

+1 She is not at all talented! Can’t dance, can’t sing. Unless we now consider famewhoring to be a talent, in which case, yes, she is brilliant.
As for the “body shaming,” she was the one flaunting her body and saying “look at me, I’m practically naked,” so why can’t we comment on her body not looking good? If she were dressed in actual clothes and people were commenting, then no, that would not be cool. On a side note, in another post people were saying Robin Thicke is chubby and no one screamed body shaming at them. Double standard?

      • Steph says:

While I agree that people should not make unsolicited comments about other people’s bodies, a part of me kinda wonders: if she is selling us something that is all about the body and the booty and sex then is it more okay to say “no. Her ass was saggy and I do not find it attractive.” I guess mean, is her overtly sexual amd nude performance sort of soliciting body commentary. Cuz clearly she doesn’t want to be judged for singing ability give her performance.

    • Belle Epoch says:

Team Cher. Loved what she said. And she didn’t take it back, just just pointed out that she fell into an ego trap (o wise 1) and should have kept her mouth shut.

Agree she was referring to the liquid bottom. If you’re going to stick your ass in America’s face, at least do some exercises for it.

      • V4Real says:

That’s what I’m saying. Tone it up, get injections or do some squats if you’re going to parade it around to the world.

      • snakecharmer says:

dead lifts and squats will bulk up your booty like WoAH! pants will be tight the next day. 😉

  2. Tanguerita says:

It’s a shame she backtracked and apologized.I found her statement to be hilarous and true.

    • Nono says:

It wasn’t even body-shaming. Miley DIDN’T look good. She has a banging bod, and that “outfit” did her no favours.

Besides looking cheap, its rigidity revealed that Miley doesn’t do enough squats and lunges.

If Miley wants to wear more outfits like it and actually have them be flattering, she’s going to have to put more effort into building muscle so the material doesn’t dig into her skin.

      • Yvette says:

I agree with everything Cher said, and while body shaming is not cool, does that equal a blanket ban on commenting on someone’s body?

When Miley was recording, and doing Pilates everyday about a year or so ago, she had an AMAZING body, she was toned and obviously healthy and if I remember went gluten free and/or vegan? Now she has told us through her song’s she’s taking drugs, and it was quite obvious from her VMA performance the muscle definition she had isn’t there anymore.

In my experience (through myself and friends..), maintaining that small a physique and not having any muscle tone is usually a sign of an unhealthy relationship with food and their body, or a figure maintained by a regular drug habit and subsequent poor nutrition. It’s sad that a lot of girls in their early 20’s do this, and to glorify what is obviously unhealthy is what is shameful IMO..

      • HH says:

Thank you! I didn’t find it to be body shaming. I was a comment on how the outfit (and I use that term loosely), fit her body. It was not flattering in any way.

      • carol says:

I wonder why she isn’t doing squats and working out an stuff? I would have thought that her handlers are trying to push the ‘sexy’ angle for her.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m sorry she backtracked, too. I agree with everything she said.

      • Steph says:

This is similar to what I posted above. I don’t agree with body shaming but I don’t necessarily feel this was Cher’s intent.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m not ok with body shaming either, but Cher is all about the costume. I think she was referring to the fact that Miley’s costumes were hideously unflattering.

    • ncmagnolia says:

Team Cher. She’s been the boss b*tch for decades and she’s 100% right about Miley and her terrible performance. Recognize.

    • lisa says:

      ita

i think a lot of the criticism has been attributed to prudishness when it really isnt for a lot of people. it’s that everything about it was so below average.

  3. Eleonor says:

Except for the body part, Pink and Cher have the point: if the song was good, the dance was good we would have a very different opinion, even if she came on stage naked.

    • LB says:

I remember when Britney did the VMAs a few years ago and stripped into a nude skinsuit. It was risqué and she was obviously lip syncing. But the girl danced her ass off and was entertaining as hell. I was impressed, when I before rarely cared for Britney. She made me a fan with that performance.

I contrast that to Miley. Cher is right. These entertainers no longer care if they’re good, as long as they’re talked about. Miley makes that clear every time she brags about how many people tweeted about this or watched her videos. She even said in an interview, people will talk no matter what so make them talk about you for two weeks rather than two seconds. Lame.

    • lucy2 says:

Exactly. If you want the attention, give a good performance.
And just because something is #1 right now doesn’t mean it’s good. Billboard history is riddled with one hit wonders and terrible songs that were briefly poplar.

  4. Erinn says:

Pink is such a class act. I love that woman.

  5. The Wizz says:

What a stupid comment coming from the woman who writhed on top of a cannon for one of her videos.

    • Jules says:

Cher did it first and she did it better and you still hear the song on the radio. Will Twerky McTongue’s crap be on the radio 20 years from now?

    • ahoyhoy says:

Do you even realize who Cher is?

    • Nope says:

Not to mention the hideous costume she wore for the Academy the night she won her Oscar. She was almost naked. Unnecessarily naked. And so gross.
And as a singer, she is no Aretha, either..

  6. Kiddo says:

Look, I love Cher. But really, Cher is not a phenomenal voice by any stretch of the imagination. She built her empire on Bob Mackie costumes and baring a ton of skin. No she didn’t twerk, but she shook her bare ass on a ship. So, in that sense, pot meet kettle. Yes, the current days push the envelope even further, but it’s the same mindset that took Cher to where she has arrived.

    • Nya says:

Yeah, Cher shook her ass on a ship, but it was for an amazing classic song and on a giant freaking navy ship!

Not writhing around and licking sledgehammers for a creepy Terry Richardson video.

As Cher herself said, it doesn’t matter if someone is naked if the song is great and the performance is awesome. Miley had neither.

      • Kiddo says:

Meh. That song wasn’t “great” either. I’m not saying that I thought Miley’s performance was great, just that people who make a living on schtick shouldn’t chide other people making a living on schtick, NWIM?

    • blue marie says:

yeah, completely agree. I remember having a conversation with my dad over whether or not Cher was talented (he thought so) and I told him it was just because she bared her butt.. Good actress, only an ok singer..

Pink’s response was better, but I don’t Miley’s all that talented.

      • Tammy says:

I disagree. Miley is extremely talented, Wrecking Ball is actually not a bad song and I like the video.

      • snakecharmer says:

i think miley would be a force to be reckoned with if she stuck with her dolly covers like that version of jolene and got some top notch country writers to give her material like that. OT but leann rimes got rave reviews on NPR for spitfire. but her album tanked. sometimes you have to let the ego and persona fall by the wayside if you want to promote your art.

    • Mindy says:

Lol. Its scary to think that some decades from today Miley will be referred to as “classic”. People will dab anything great if you give it time. I’m still stunned that Britney is now being held up as anything more than a pretty girl with no discernable talent or authenticity.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Completely agree with Kiddo and bluemarie.

Cher got a ton of shit for those ass-less chaps back in the day. That, and her voice makes me want to punch a wall.

No Miley fan here but I think Cher might just be bummed out that Miley is getting the same sort of attention that Cher built a career on many years ago. That ship has sailed, Cher, time to hang up your feather headdress.

  7. Mia 4S says:

I’m not with Pink on the “talented” part but otherwise she nailed it. Cher mostly nailed it as well. The girl didn’t look like hell, she looked like an idiot. This is not a formula for lasting fame. The downfall is going to be very very messy.

  8. Nya says:

Her body DID look like hell in that latex diaper. Her ass looked like a nightmare. Her body is amazing. But IN THAT OUTFIT, it was horrendous.

  9. Tulip Garden says:

I think Pink’s statement was lovely/accurate and I agree with it. Lots of people “admit” to liking Miley’s song/songs, they just hate to do so b/c of her antics. Makes me shake my head b/c Miley could have still been successful (and held on to her dignity & maybe, fiancé) without all of the OTT, famewhore stuff.

BTW, when I say successful, I don’t mean that she would be getting the same amount of attention or that she would be getting #1’s instead she might be getting r-e-s-p-e-c-t (read as Aretha) which should be more than enough compensation for not being the topic of conversation for weeks! 🙂

    • Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

+1 Agree with everything apart from the “hold on to her fiancé” part, what’s so great about Liam anyway? He’s a bad actor with zero charisma, and there was talk about him and January Jones hooking up so if that’s true then good for her that they’re not together anymore, she always seemed to be more into him than he was into her.

      • Tulip Garden says:

I’m not saying there is something “so great” about Liam. I am assuming Miley thought that there was or she wouldn’t have agreed to marry him. Also, I don’t think that she is happy about the break-up..As to the cheating rumors, they are just that. I am not going to condemn him over them. I do think that he was flirting with other women and I think that is because Miley’s change of personality probably left him confused/upset.
I do think Liam is extremely attractive 🙂

      • Nattie says:

Liam is a douche imho for the way he has had his PR try to leverage the breakup. Miley is an idiot but she should be glad that little user is gone.

  10. Cirque28 says:

I see Cher Is a Random capitalizer, as well as embracing Kanye CAPS and Jaden Smith’s Everything Looks Better As A Title. Who knew all these famous people were so illiterate?

    • Nono says:

I’m surprised we can make any sense of these tweets from her. Normally she comes off like someone who’s dipped into too many medicine and alcohol cabinets.

    • Renee says:

I always thought that Cher’s tweets were a result of her craziness but I was alway impressed that she had a WAY better handle on technology than me, and I am young enough to be her daughter. Which is not that young, but I should be a lot more conversant with technology than I am. But your comment reminded me that Cher is dyslexic and that could account for the state of some of her tweets? I know that she had a difficult time in school because it wasn’t assessed properly.

I like Cher, I know that a lot of it is nostalgia but I think that she is funny and witty and I enjoy her cray but no her obsession with plastic surgery although – her body, her choice. I DO like that she apologizes when she makes comments that are mean about other people. And that she is willing to call herself out.

    • decorative item says:

Cher is dyslexic, that probably explains her tweets. She has worked with loads of kids with the same problem over the years. She even has trouble dialing long distance telephone numbers.

    • Jayna says:

Cher is a riot on twitter. She will tweet in the middle of the night all the time, like a stream of consciousness and always says she can’t get the hang of it. You’re just lucky she manages to type it out and have it make sense.

  11. Tessa says:

I think we can all agree Miley could have and should have done better and not relied on gimmicks and crass silliness to get through her big performance. Instead of people being impressed by her talent, people were just really offended by her tongue and a foam finger. Cher and Pink have good points. They know the value of pushing the envelope, but they also appreciate talent and good performances. There is a balance that Miley just did not strike.

  12. paola says:

    I love Pink!

  13. lady_luck says:

I think Cher is too nice and sweet sometimes, the way she backtracks and apologises to people that totally need to hear the words. Love Cher though. What a legend. Miley is a total, utter wreck. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was diagnosed with bipolar or histrionic personality disorder now.

  14. bns says:

    Pink’s wrong. Miley cannot sing.

  15. Anoninga says:

I haven’t cared much about all of this but I just saw the pics of Liam and Eliza kissing…maybe I’m the minority, but he didn’t seem that into it. Plus I just read that Liam is in Atlanta filming for THG…I don’t doubt that they hooked up, but I do think most of this is one sided.
Really I kind of feel bad for Liam. He asked a completely different girl to marry him. Maybe Miley is heading towards a meltdown, maybe this is all PR spin, who really knows, what’s clear is Miley is doing a lot of damage that the public may not tolerate much longer.

  16. poppy says:

lol cher, she had 2 cheeks hanging out.

  17. Talie says:

Oh pleasssseeee, Cher read her as she should be be read. If Miley had parents or grandparents like Cher, she may have some sense.

  18. HK9 says:

Cher told the truth~that is all.

  19. JJ says:

I give her 1-2 years and everybody will be completely annoyed by her. Cheap sensationalism does not warrant longevity. Ughh, she comes across like she is mentally retarded.

  20. Caz says:

The paying public aren’t going to put up with Miley’s PR nonsense for too much longer.

Pink is the real deal. Miley will never be in the same league.

  21. Aly says:

Miley has a good body, but in that nude latex diaper? Not so much.

Pink is classy as hell, but I do disagree that miley can actually sing well and is beautiful. Her voice is AWFUL live and she is very much average looking. Also, coated tongue? LOL very true. It looks nasty.

God I just wish this girl would go away forever. Can we get more articles on Adele instead. That chick is classy, funny, and has a phenomenal voice. She should be the one having articles on here daily.

    • Jayna says:

I wish Pink has mentioned that, a singer should focus on their vocals first and foremost, and the performance was horrible vocally.

  22. Roxy says:

She has no talent whatsoever. So she gets naked and attracts attention, even if most of it is negative, she doesn’t care. She’s a slag!!

  23. Side-Eye says:

Her body did like hell, giving Hank Hill realness in the butt area. And I dont get what’s so great about her body. Im rather thin myself but is heing scrawny as hell amazing now?

  24. MademoiselleRose says:

So much for freedom of speech … no-one is really allowed to say what they think anymore.

    • Jen says:

Please look up what “freedom of speech” actually means before you act like you actually have any clue.

    • Nicolette says:

They always backtrack and apologize. None of them seem to have a spine anymore and stick by what they say.

    • manda says:

Yes they are–freedom of speech means the government can’t lock one up for speaking his/her mind. It has NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING to do with receiving criticism for the words that fall out of one’s mouth

  25. manda says:

I hope the dude that told Miley her tongue was sexy is happy for what he has brought down upon us. Gosh I’m sick of her tongue sticking out of her mouth, although it does remind me of that email from a few years ago about how if your tongue goes a certain way, you’re having a stroke (or something… I guess I should look that up)

  26. Amelia says:

That coated dingy tongue again. Miley has made me have an aversion to tongues now.

  27. Walt Jr says:

You guys, please do not mess with Cher! 🙂

  28. Shelby says:

I hate it when people speak their true feelings and then take them back.

  29. Macey says:

ugghhh, Im so sick of seeing her tongue, its disgusting. I never really paid much attention to Miley, I do have to turn the radio station when she comes on b/c her squeaky, pitchy voice irritates me but other than than that she never really bothered me until recently.
I dont think Cher should have backed tracked, I agree with what she said except for the talent part, her singing is awful. I think the media is making this whole story line last longer than it should. Im sure everybody is sick of reading about it by now and seeing her tongue and flabby butt everywhere. and yes, her butt is flabby. sorry, not one to pick apart bodies but when you’re strutting it around almost naked, you’re going to get comments and criticism, which is exactly why she did it. Sorry if it isnt all positive but when you put your butt on display like that people are going to comment on it. she does not have a nice butt, no one would have known that tho if it wasnt for HER CHOICE of outfit.

  30. Tara says:

I think Cher is awesome but at least Miley is still on her first body. Cher keeps messing with the odometer.
Love her brand of cray-cray, though.

  31. kk2 says:

Cher migt get added to be fantasy celebrity dinner party list. Liked what she said up to the body comment, and like her apology. Pink is very classy as always. I’m ambivalent about We Can’t Stop, but Wrecking Ball is great. I don’t think her performance/music video is driving its popularity. I haven’t even seen the video (who watches music videos anymore? Blurred lines is the first music video i’ve watched in years)

  32. aquarius64 says:

Cher & Pink called it. OT – it’s coming ou that Miley is dating her Bangerz producer Mike Will Make It. There have been rumors about them before the break up. So much for being the wronged fiancée.

    • Leila in Wunderland says:

Wait, weren’t you the same person the other day saying that we shouldn’t assume that Liam cheated with January just because their were rumors and he was seen with her? So why should we assume that Miley hooked up with that guy just because there’s a rumor and she was seen with him?

      • aquarius64 says:

Point taken. I’m putting this out there because I feel Miley and her team are leaking the Liam is a dog story so she looks good and to help sell her CD. I like seeing Miley get a taste of her own medicine by having her character being called into question.

  33. Feebee says:

Body Shaming? Really? Has it got to that? Someone can’t make a call like that without being slammed as body shaming? Miley has no problem with her body – obviously – and she shouldn’t, she’s young and doing her thing but I thought at the time it wouldn’t have hurt her to pop a squat or two as her butt looked sad, really, really sad.

if you’re putting yourself out there, in the way that she is then she’s fair game. Cher’s comment was not body shaming.

    • Lisa says:

Yeah, I’m also tired of hearing about shaming. I think if you talk about something like slut-shaming, that’s valid, but when people cry about being “sugar shamed” or whatever it was that xoJane idiot wrote about a few weeks ago, I just roll my eyes. It’s an opinion. Take it or leave it and move on with your life. Unless it’s an attack on your character, you don’t need to call it that!

(I’m probably opinion shaming right now)

  34. Meggin says:

Love Cher but omg her twitter rants are crazy!

  35. Lucinda says:

Cher is a hypocrite. I remember the 80’s when Cher would perform with practically nothing on and surrounded by much younger men. Sure, she didn’t grind or twerk but it was a different time and she was still known as much, if not more, for her body and lack of clothing as her singing. She was also one of the first to embrace autotune.

  36. Erm says:

    I love Pink.

  37. anemone says:

Some 20 year olds do gross, stupid, strange or insufferable things to garner attention. You can only hurt them by ignoring them. Quite frankly I feel that Cher and P!nk only diminish themselves by deigning to comment on Miley’s antics.

I would not want my daughter to behave like Miley. But as someone who has no relationship with Miley, I think I’m in the wrong age group to be judging her—without my comments somehow reflecting back negatively on me. I’ll leave that up to her peers and hope that in time, she’ll realize that she didn’t have to work so hard to leave her Hannah Montana image behind.

  38. Norman says:

Miley Cyrus to me is a noun, a verb, go stick out your tongue and a twerk. That is Miley Cyrus in a nutshell. At this stage Miley is a joke and she is not even in on her own antic.

  39. Lisa says:

    Two things I’m tired of:

Celebs backtracking. The media can be as brutal as they want, but if one celeb says something about another, they’re bullies.

The concept of [insert cause here] shaming. Expressing an opinion isn’t shaming. By this logic, she voice shamed, hair shamed, and and tongue shamed Miley. It’s too buzzword-y for me to take seriously.

    • anemone says:

“Body shaming” is not just a buzz word—it’s something that can lead to eating disorders or other self-destructive behaviour.

      • Lisa says:

If you look up what shaming means in psychology circles, you’ll notice that the examples there differ from statements that people are labeling that way.

It’s the same for “empowering.” Everyone wants to make grand gestures of inspiration, instead of just letting their actions speak for themselves. It becomes all for show, and that’s what buzzwords are for.

    • Leila in Wunderland says:

Even though I agree that what Cher said was not a big deal, certain forms of ‘shaming’- like body-shaming and slut-shaming- are serious issues that should be taken seriously.

Body-shaming is the reason why we have so many women and girls who hate their bodies, get plastic surgery, and have eating disorders. Slut-shaming is basically the notion that a female’s worth, respectability, and goodness lie in her ‘sexual purity’, so if a woman has had sex with a certain amount of people, has shown a certain amount of skin, done certain dance moves, dresses a certain way, or has had sex before someone else deems it appropriate, it means she’s inferior, disgusting, and bad, trash, she’s called things like slut/skank/tramp/whore, and she is ‘asking for it’ or is some kind of harbinger of sexual violence.

      • Lisa says:

I made a comment after this about slut-shaming. I think things like that are valid, it’s just this recent crop of attaching “shaming” to everything that makes it hard to take the real issues seriously. It’s like calling eating disorders Ana and Mia, and flaunting diets like the ABC diet.

  40. Lucy says:

Although I see her point, I do think Cher’s comment about her body was unnecessary. Her outfit was just unflattering, that’s all. As for P!nk, well, she pretty much read my mind.

  41. Jayna says:

I love me some Cher. Her comments were spot on. It wasn’t really body shaming. She wore something where her ass was hanging out, and it was flabby, some cellulite. When performers strip down, they have their bodies at their peak. But I also like how she backtracked. It wasn’t backtracking from her beliefs so much as it was backtracking on saying maybe too much how she felt as she is a woman much older slamming a 20-year-old performer still finding her way. I adore her.

Cher’s new album ready to drop soon is streaming free on Amazon. It’s surprisingly good. Even the few vocodor songs work. Her vocals are fierce, nothing like her age. Some great ballads on there, very eclectic. It is a fresh album and hip but mature, but not her age, but not trying to be a teen like Madonna’s album. Support her, guys. Woman power. She’s 67 and putting out a cool album. Bruce Springsteen, Bowie get the support. We need to support Cher so it won’t tank. Target will have a deluxe one with some bonus live tracks from her movie Burlesque. Sirens is so beautiful. I love My Love. Dressed to Kill is awesome and a little campy. Pink wrote a couple of songs for her on it I think. Cher has a sense of humor about her music, not all I’m an artiste.

    • Tara says:

Well said and thanks for the link 🙂

      • Jayna says:

Sirens and I Hope You Find It are my favorites. My friend is getting a divorce and has been going through hell, and she loves the two up-tempo songs, I Walk Alone and Favorite Scars. She said they are going to be her anthems for picking herself back up and reclaiming her power.

  42. Isa says:

My fire thought was Cher’s turn back time video.

My second thought was the picture everyone was sharing of Miley comparing her butt to a chicken butt or a cartoon character. Honestly I think it would have looked better naked bc those shorts were terribly unflattering.

  43. bettyrose says:

I agree witn everyone who said it wasn’t really body shaming. Cher is queen leather strap afterall. She’s just saying to find the right form of nearly naked for your particular body type.

  44. Trek Girl says:

She wasn’t body shaming. She’s right, too.

I just wish she hadn’t taken back what she said. There’s no need to backtrack when you’re telling the truth.

  45. Dommy Dearest says:

I haven’t read all the comments yet BUT to me it doesn’t sound like Cher was trying to apologize. And if she was it sounds dripping with sarcasm.

    Miley still has no ass.

  46. Cyndi says:

Somehow, her last tweet is missing in the article:

    “…Ps this is Not an apology 4 what I Thought,its a Reminder,that if I don’t practice my principles,I loose Them.”

  47. Ari says:

you know all this pc stuff about body shaming is annoying the hell out of me like who cares if someone says her body looked like hell what we give a rats behind about celebrities and their poo poo feelings now? cher is the ultimate celebrity and she didnt give a rats poo so why should we- like lets all get over ourselves already really- the next thing you know you cant say someone has an ugly baby behind their back anymore lol IM KIDDING but jfc

  48. Leila in Wunderland says:

I like Cher, I really like Pink, and I like Miley (even though there are some things that I don’t like about her). I can’t stand body-shaming or body policing, because I believe that people should be able to be proud with their bodies and yes, flaunt it whether they’re perfectly toned or not, and I’m disillusioned by Hollywood’s narrow little beauty standard. I disagree with the idea of, “If you’re gonna dress like this/dance like that, you better be completely toned and Live Up To The Standard, otherwise body-shaming is perfectly fine. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about Miley, Kim K, Kate Upton, Christina Aguilera, (another one who I love 🙂 ) or if we’re talking about Kelly Clarkson, Demi Lovato, Adele, or Amber Riley: I still find our fat-shaming/ body-policing culture problematic, and I don’t think that the amount of skin a woman has shown makes it acceptable. That said, I agree with most of Cher’s comment and I don’t think what she said was THAT bad.

I agree with most of what Pink said to, and what she said wasn’t bullying or bitchy at all, but here’s the thing: it’s just a teensy bit ironic coming from her. If someone like Adele, who hasn’t had any days of hard partying, revealing costumes, lady marmalade, or booty-flashing behind her, had made the comment, it would have been more… fitting.

  49. Claudia says:

Minus the body comment, Cher completely nailed it. I don’t think it’s body shaming, by the way, just bitchiness. People, particularly on gossip blogs, tend to comment on other people’s bodies (e.g. Christina Hendrick’s boobs, KK’s ass, Keira Knightley’s thinness, Jennifer Aniston’s belly, etc.) Also, I’m really tired of all the cries of “(insert word)-shaming!!!”. When that’s overused, it’s not taken as seriously.

  50. lola lola says:

Totally agree with everything Cher said. She cut right to the truth. The singing, dancing, outfit, body, tongue…all of it was just terrible. Like Community Auditions with a larger drunken audience.

  51. skuddles says:

I suspect what Cher meant is Miley looked like crap in her unflattering, ill fitting costume. Not that Miley’s body itself looked like crap.

I LOVE that Cher mentioned Miley’s disgusting, coated tongue. Maybe MC will take heed and stop hanging that thing out at every possible opportunity. I can’t stand the sight of it anymore!

  52. Chloeee says:

You know what? I’d be the first to anti body shame but Miley’s body did look like hell. For Miley, she looked sickly. Her body has looked better. The styling was wrong. Everything was wrong. I see it more as a comment on bad presentation.

  53. sunny says:

Cher should sit her plastic surgery body down. Some of these so called celebs are too fond of taking potshots at others in trying to remain relevant. Cher should stay in her retirement home and her autotunes.

  54. St says:

I like Chers hilarious non apology. She is like: “Oh Gawd, my interview went all over the Internet. I still think that Miley is embarrassed herself and can’t dance, don’t get me wrong. But I’m too old to get in this kind of biatch fight with toddler. Yeah, yeah, of course she is like super pretty and super talented. There you go. I’ve said it. Now stop quoting me everywhere. I’m too old for this sheet. Now I will go and take a nap”.

  55. Ginger says:

Why be ashamed of speaking your opinion? Especially when it’s all true. Just own it. She should have had a properly fitting outfit. Miley has a cute figure otherwise.

  56. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

Ha! Lorde just topped “Wrecking Ball” on iTunes #praisetheLorde 🙂

  57. GirlyGirl says:

I’m not sure what people actually expect from Miley, she’s the poster child for creative laziness.

  58. Jasmine says:

Body shaming is the new bullying, now everyone is gonna accuse everyone of body shaming…so annoying…btw everything Cher said is totally right

  59. Jayna says:

Whatever we say about Miley’s antics, though, Wrecking Ball is a really great pop song.

  60. Kelly says:

Please no more tongue pictures. It is too gross.

  61. Kristina says:

It’s like a witch hunt!! No, I won’t say she looked tacky, or comment on her clothes, her moves and her performance. For grown people like Cher and Pink to come out and say stuff like that, being mean to a young woman like that… THATS tacky, it’s desperate for attention to talk down on a young woman like that.
Why? Do you want to bring attention to yourselves? Do you want to send a message to young women to not act like that? What I see is grown people acting like bullies in school because someone made something different.
In my eyes, that is tackier than anything Miley did!
    Don’t judge!

  62. Jennifer12 says:

    Pink really nailed it.

  63. penguin says:

Cher told the truth. If you skip workouts and live on coke/molly then your body will look like hell. It’s just common sense really.

  64. d b says:

Good for Cher for speaking her mind. Pink was more diplomatic, but her message is clear too. And I’m pretty sure it’s all the same to Miley – attention.

  65. homegrrrrl says:

Wearing gafer tape straddling a cannon. Cher was a miley once upon 20 years ago.

That was such high art, Cher, it literally went over Everyone’s head.

  66. homegrrrrl says:

Cher was a miley once upon 20 years ago, wearing gafer tape, straddling a cannon

That was such high art, Cher, it literally went over Everyone’s head.

  67. Lexi says:

They really hit the nail on the head!

  68. homegrrrrl says:

    Cher has pop star amnesia.
She was the original rihanna ( remember greg allman)
As well as the original miley
( was straddling a canon wearing gaffer tape considered, “doing it well”)

  69. emma says:

Miley was super awkward in her performance for sure. Not professional. I guess she wanted to go out and wing it. She looked nervous. Meh, I’m with Cher. Miley’s body looked good, but meh performance.

  70. Aud says:

Ah Cher….she of the manifold surgeries and auto-tuned voice.
    Who is she to talk?
She was a Kardashian before the Kardashians were conceived.
Pink definitely said it better than Cher.
Still it angers me immensely when women of Cher’s age body shame women a quarter of their age. Miley hasn’t had loads of surgery to her body. How can her body be considered to be in a horrible state? What a ridiculous comment, from an equally ridiculous woman. The Norma Desmond of music: Cher. The amount of surgery Cher has had on her body [even when she was young] may as well classify her an honourary Cyborg.

I don’t even know why Cher is relevant. Overrated singer. Perhaps the most overrated. I sure as hell loathe Miley Cyrus’ latest incarnation as a female variant of Gene Simmons, but Miley sings better than Cher ever could.

  71. bmom says:

I LOVE MILEY! Madonna has done worse. Cher has done worse…Cher has a flat pancake ugly ass herself…sensing a lot of jealousy. Leave a kid alone cyberbullies.

  72. Lola says:

Cher and all of the others are pissed because Miley took the media attention away from them. Granted, her performance was a little out of the norm, but it worked for her.

  73. Lauraq says:

-I didn’t think Miley’s performance was good quality wise, but I wasn’t offended and I don’t know why anyone would be.
-I mentioned this in passing to my boyfriend’s mother at a Labor day shindig when everyone else was talking about it and she responded by saying, ‘I know, right? I’m more offended with how Cher walks around dressing like she’s 20 still. Plastic or not, time to give it a rest.’ True story. We have a slightly awkward relationship and I felt like that was the first time we really bonded.
-A lot of people have criticized Miley’s body, but I think it’s great. One person even called into a local radio show and said Britney was in better shape performing ‘Gimme More’. Um, no.
-Pink performs some of her songs close to nude and needs to stfu.
