Taylor Swift covers Glamour UK, throws shade on 1D fan-girls & Miley Cyrus

Taylor Swift covers the November issue of Glamour UK. I don’t hate the shoot, but I’ve seen it all before. This 1960s-styling has become a default for many of Swifty’s editorials, and she definitely plays it up. I like it, it suits her, but it’s getting slightly boring at this point. As for the interview, Swifty comes across… well, you know I’ve always had a hard time making my peace with Swifty’s 23-going-on-13 imagery versus her rather mature, business-like marketing strategy, and this interview is a good example of that. She talks about boys because she always talks about boys. But she also shades One Direction fan-girls, self-obsessed celebrities and Miley Cyrus. These quotes are fascinating:

Swifty on dealbreakers: ‘Here’s what I’ve learned about deal-breakers. If you have enough natural chemistry with someone, you overlook every single thing that you said would break the deal.’

On cheaters: ‘I’ve seen my friends take someone back after they’ve cheated because they fit perfectly. But I don’t know, because I’ve never had a perfect fit with someone.’

Dating other celebrities: ‘You can’t say, “I’m never gonna date a high-profile person in the arts!” But whoever I date, famous or not – whether I ever date again! – all chaos will break loose. With fabrication and frantic obsession and who likes who more and how it ended. But right now is easy because I’m single and happy, and it’s very relaxing.’

The One Direction fan-girls who were pissed at her when she dated Harry Styles: ‘I never read one hateful thing said about me by some 12 year old. So I got to live an actual life. And I’ve kept that mentality. Just because there’s a hurricane going on around you doesn’t mean you have to open the window and look at it.”’

Self-obsession and vanity: ‘You can be obsessed with the bad things people say and the good things, either way you’re obsessed with yourself and I’m not – you can become unhinged so easily. Vanity can apply to both insecurity and egotism. So I distance myself, because I feel everything. The little I am exposed to hurts my feelings. The only things I can really control are my songs and my behaviour. The rest? If I focused on it, that would lead to insanity.’

On Miley Cyrus: ‘There’s room for role models who make mistakes. There’s clearly room for role models who are made fun of at award shows, not that I necessarily enjoy being poked fun at! But that’s gonna happen to them too. Whether in a board meeting or in school or on Facebook, where they’ll get humiliated publicly. And if I can say, “Yeah, I’ve taken a few hits over the years and I’m still going, I’m still happy!”, maybe that’s an example. It’s not just about standing on top of the mountain with the wind blowing in your hair, looking fabulous.’

[From The Mail]

Swifty is being surprisingly generous to Miley Cyrus, right? I mean, Taylor managed to make that Miley quote into something Swifty-specific, but there are layers of shade embedded in the comment too. It’s like Taylor is telling Miley: everyone is making fun of you and maybe you deserve it but no one is perfect and it’s important to remember that this too shall pass. I think? That’s how I interpreted it. As for “Either way you’re obsessed with yourself and I’m not” – does she think it’s just as easy as declaring that she’s not self-obsessed and that’s it? I think Taylor has some good parts, don’t get me wrong – she has a charitable heart and she is lovely and gracious to her fans. But she’s just as much of a narcissistic whack-job as every other celebrity.

Doesn’t Tay Tay have 12 yr old fans too? Why do these adults trash these lil 1D fangirls? They are kids “in love” with Harry Styles. You are a multi millionaire world famous entertainer. Who cares what they say about you on tumblr?? Agree with her Virus shade though. Haha.

    • Allie says:

I was just going to say that! How ironic when a lot of her fans are pretend as well. I also had to roll my eyes at the vanity and self obsessed comments, please. Most of the time when I read her articles I just want to scream Get over yourself!

That said, she does look good in 60’s styling, but she really needs to close her mouth.

    • LadyMTL says:

I’m sure she does have loads of 12 year old fans, but IMHO the difference is that her fans won’t necessarily start foaming at the mouth the way 1D fans will if you so much as breathe in the direction of their particular fave. (From personal experience, I know boy-band fans can be nutso, lol).

I don’t agree with her throwing shade at them because who doesn’t FEEL EVERYTHING when they’re that age, but I do see her point.

    • Anna says:

She’s not really shading 12 year olds. The interview specifically asked for her reaction to a 12 year old’s comments

  2. Garrett says:

“I never read one hateful thing about me by some 12 year old”. Yeah right. 1D’s fans are worst as Beliebers.

    • Jayna says:

I thought she was saying she doesn’t go online and read them, not that they weren’t said by some 12-year-old fantatic.

  3. DGO says:

Love the cover shot. The first one would have been great if they’d gotten an angle that didn’t make her look pregnant.

  4. flutters says:

This is probably a dumb question but how do we know Taylor’s comment about role models and all that is actually in response to a question about VMAs/Miley Cyrus? These interviews usually take place 2-3 months in advance and the VMAs were only a few weeks ago.

Taylor isn’t obsessed with herself? I think her behavior, in particular her unwillingness to laugh at herself, say otherwise. I also think at as a businesswoman she IS relentlessly obsessed with controlling her public image. Nothing wrong with that, really, but it flies against her comments.

    • Anna says:

It wasn’t about Miley. The interview doesn’t even mention her name.

      • cs says:

This wasn’t about Miley. I believe it was about Tina Fey and Amy Poehler making fun of her at the Golden Globes Awards Show earlier this year. I’m glad she realizes once you reach a certain level of success people are going to make fun of you. I didn’t blame her for being upset. I’m sure they would never call George Clooney out for dating a different woman every award season. But I forgot it’s different for men, He’s a Playboy. I feel they set the tone for people now calling this girl on the internet a slut.

  5. Gabriella says:

I don’t know… Lately these other popstars (Miley, Gaga…) have made Swifty sound so intelligent and down-to-earth by comparison.

  6. anne says:

In the first picture it her mouth looks strange. Almost like she’s wearing those fake plastic teeth.

  7. Jana says:

LOL Swifty is telling Miley they all had belly jerking fits of laughter at her expense.

  8. blue marie says:

I like the cover shot, everything else is meh.

  9. Mo says:

Hahahaha! She’s such a mean girl. And so good at it.

    • Athena says:

LOL!….that’s the impression I get as well!. I have a radar for these things I can tell when someone really is “true” and when they are as phoney as a two dollar bill. I get an 8th grade mean girl vibe from Swiftie.

  10. Tulip says:

That first photo reminds me of Joanna Lumley from Absolutely Fabulous, when they go to Paris for a magazine shoot.

  11. Zoid says:

HM. I didn’t really see the shade in either part. I know everyone’s going to laugh and tell her to grow up because she’s not well liked here, but apart from some eyebrow raises at the guy quotes, I didn’t really see anything wrong with it. Also don’t see how that section could’ve been about Miley if this interview was done months ago, like they usually are. I liked the attitude about the 1D nonsense. Why get into twitter fights with preteens? One a side rant, WHO ARE THE PARENTS OF THOSE HATEFUL CHILDREN? Who doesn’t mind that their child is spewing hate on the Internet at a very young age? It doesn’t seem like she’s shading 12 year olds, just the hateful ones with fights to pick.
As for the guy comments… I like that she said she’s single and happy. When she broke up with Harry everyone laughed at her and said shed have a new one in no time flat. That was January. Maybe she’s learned how to live without a guy?

  12. Tanguerita says:

“role models who are made fun of at award shows, not that I necessarily enjoy being poked fun at” – is a jab at Tina&Amy?Again??She really can’t let it go, this snotty little wannabe princess.

  13. Jayna says:

    I don’t see shade.

  14. MademoiselleRose says:

Swift used to annoy me a little, but since she’s been single and there’s no boy drama, it’s been better. And after the show that Miley has been putting on, Swift is looking pretty good. I’m not a fan of her music, but the way she’s going, being able to sing, write and perform well, she’s going to have a good, long career I think. Good on her.

  15. TheOriginalKitten says:

‘Here’s what I’ve learned about deal-breakers. If you have enough natural chemistry with someone, you overlook every single thing that you said would break the deal.’

It pains me to admit that I 100% agree with her on this. In fact, I’ve said pretty much the exact same thing many times myself.

Now please stop making me like her.

    • GreenEyes says:

Lol hello Org a Kitten:). Totally had to eat my words on that one 18 yrs ago. Everything about hubby was a deal breaker. I like older men (but 19 yrs older deal breaker, was a major one). Last month was our 18 wedding anniversary & today on his Birthday we had our first date 19 yrs ago (first date I made him his Birthday dinner & cake since he persisted for w/ flowers sent to me everyday for 6 months sent to me @ work w/ a beautiful lil sonnet about what number day it was on the broken heart scale). My deal breaker list started collecting cobwebs before I knew it. But I was 30 w/ a nasty divorce fresh behind me .. not a 20 something. To be fair he didn’t look his age, whats unfair now.. still doesn’t look his age! Had to giggle. Didn’t realize deal breaker lists were still a thing. Some things never change. 🙂

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Awwww, flowers EVERY day??? What a sweet story and yeah, he’s definitely a keeper and worth throwing out the deal-breakers for 🙂

        Happy belated anniversary, greeneyes! ♥

      • GreenEyes says:

Thank you Orig Kitten:). Yeah. Everyday my crew loved him, I thought he was nuts. Glad my crew was right:)! Lol

  16. Lisa says:

That first black and white picture looks sooo strangely like Catherine Tate to me. It’s weird.

  17. Leila in Wunderland says:

I’m not a fan of Taylor Swift, because for years people have used her as a tool of the virgin/whore dichotomy to slut-shame other female artists, and it’s not like she hasn’t played into that game a little bit with some of her song lyrics. Plus, I think she’s overrated and one-dimensional. But I don’t hate her. She doesn’t seem like a bad person. And I find myself agreeing with a lot of what she said here.
And I disagree with the idea that all famous people are narcissistic crackpots. I mean, us non-famous people definitely have many moments in life where we can be snarky, or self-preoccupied, or oversensitive, or overly ambitious, so I don’t think that a famous person is automatically a narcissist for having those same human moments. I don’t expect anyone to be perfect or a saint.

I also agree with her about the whole dating of A-listers in Hollywood. A lot of times if a female celebrity dates other famous guys, she’ll be labeled a famewhore. But I can’t say I wouldn’t be tempted to date or hook-up with any of the people on my ‘list’ if I were famous.

    • GreenEyes says:

Bun it she does date famous people in the industry .. Then writes dongs about them. That’s why I found that comment kind of condescending.

  18. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Until I read this site, I didn’t know that young girls foamed over 1D–of course, once I realized that, I got why there were so many gay Liam/Harry/Zayn/Niall fanfictions on AO3.org–makes sense.

  19. ThruRoseColouredGlasses says:

I’m a stepmother to a Directioner who would gladly shank Swifty for being dismissive of their love for all things 1D. All fans take their idol(s) seriously. Where was that dismissive attitude when throngs of her prepubescent/tween fans bombarded Kanye for his epic fail?! She needs to learn that just because you date someone doesn’t mean that you have to hate their very existence once it’s over… she also needs to grow up!
