The Screen Actors Guild Awards preview

William Shatner, in all of his glory, will raising a glass of Taittinger champagne to herald the start of red carpet for the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday. The red carpet shows on E! will officially start at 6 pm, EST, so I suspect that the champagne toast will be around then. The actual awards show will start at 8 p.m. on TNT and TBS. The TV Guide Network will be doing red carpet arrivals coverage as well.

Here are the nominees for 2009 SAG Awards, motion picture nominations only.

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Doubt, Frost/Nixon, Milk and Slumdog Millionaire

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role – Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Sean Penn (Milk), Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role – Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married), Angelina Jolie (Changeling), Melissa Leo (Frozen River), Meryl Streep (Doubt), Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role – Josh Brolin (Milk), Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt), Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role – Amy Adams (Doubt), Penelope Cruz (Vicky Christina Barcelona), Viola Davis (Doubt), Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Kate Winslet (The Reader)

Oddsmakers hoping to cash in on the Oscars might do well to tune in Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.

As shown by the fact that all but two of their movie-acting nominees are exactly the same as those singled out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the union that celebrates actors is also very good at setting them up to win Oscars.

Furthermore, the SAG’s nominees for cast in a motion picture also perfectly mirror the Academy’s picks for Best Picture: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Doubt, Frost/Nixon, Milk and Slumdog Millionaire.

The two SAG supporting actor nominees who didn’t go on to the Oscar list are Dev Patel, in Slumdog Millionaire, and Kate Winslet, in The Reader. Their spots for the Academy’s Feb. 22 main event were taken by Michael Shannon, in Revolutionary Road, and Marisa Tomei, in The Wrestler.

One winner is already guaranteed: Lifetime Achievement Award honoree James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader himself.

From People magazine

Finally, Darth Vader and “This is CNN” are getting some respect. My guess for the wins are Kate Winslet, Sean Penn, Viola Davis and Heath Ledger, with Slumdog Millionaire taking best ensemble. But keep in mind, I’m wrong a lot. But the SAGs aren’t wrong – they often predict the Oscar winners.

    I agree…Kate Winslet all the way..sorry Angie.
I also hope Sean Penn for Milk..have yet to see Slum Dog..but from what I hear it will win big

  2. marie says:

Frank Langella all the way. He was incredible.

My vote goes to Anne hathaway , Kate Winslet,Slumdog Millionaire and wrestler(Mickey Rourke). Changelling and curius case BB, should have not been nominated at all, come on who are these people kidding, if brangelina are nominated for their movies with that type of acting so should every actor / movie be nominated for theirs, how in the world they continue nominate them when they weren’t good enough to win at GG award there is something odd going on here.

  4. sissoucat says:

Meryl Streep is a much better actress than Anne Hathaway. I can’t get the fascination with Anne.

  5. Rose says:

M Streep is amazing, but Anne was terrific in this particular role, and that’s why she has a good chance of winning. You don’t have to like an actor to appreciate them when they really pull out all the stops.

  6. teri says:

I’ve seen both Changeling and TCCOBB, both very good and yes they deserved nods. Just because you don’t care for them doesn’t mean they aren’t good.

  7. lulu says:

I saw both movies CHANGELING, CCOBB (other movies as well)there wasn’t anything special about their ACTING & any person who is objective & not biased could tell you that, these nominations should be based on their ACTING not the STORIES(the only thing those two movies had) just because you as a fan like them doen’t mean every one else should too & Who says i care about actors/ actresses who i think they / their movies deserves to be nominated or win an oscar i saw those movies & they were magnificent & i’m sure most people share the same view.

  8. Codzilla says:

I’m sure part of the reason AJ/JP were nominated for these awards is to ensure their presence. Anything to up the viewership.

  9. Sauronsarmy says:

    Go Kate Winslet!!

  10. czarina says:

Sometimes I think that Meryl Streep is SO respected as an actress that nobody thinks she has to win another Oscar–and let’s face it, it really isn’t going to make her reputation any better…she’s already considered the best of the best. (rightfully so! Go Meryl!)
