Will Lupita Nyong’o destroy Oprah’s chances for a Best Supporting Oscar this year?

Lupita Nyong’o is our new Blanchett-Swinton. Adjust your fashion expectations accordingly. Anyway, since Lupita is everyone’s new lady-crush, I thought we’d expand the coverage of her a little bit. I’m sure we’re going to be seeing more of her in the months to come – many Oscar prognosticators believe she’s a major contender for Best Supporting Actress, and if not that, she’ll be around throughout the awards season because 12 Years a Slave is on the top of everyone’s Best Picture list. So here are some interesting factoids about Lupita:

*She’s 30 years old. She was born in Mexico and raised in Kenya. She now lives in Brooklyn. She graduated from the Yale School of Drama too.

*To get the role of Patsey, she had to audition three times: “I put myself on tape in New York with her help, and then a week later I was in Los Angeles and I went in to audition with Francine Maisler, the casting director. She put me through the ringer. Then, finally, I was invited to Louisiana to audition for Steve. I auditioned in three different states.”

*How she got the call: “After I auditioned for Steve, I flew back to New Haven, Conn. and I was just about to go and sit in the sun and take in the last 24 hours when I received his call saying, ‘I’d like to offer you the part.’ My heart leaped, and then it sunk. I was so happy to get it, but then I realized, ‘Oh, no. This is where it begins.’ That was bad! My grief and turmoil would continue for the next two or three months. I think the hardest thing for me was getting beyond the feeling of intimidation and pressure of being thrown into this process with such established artists. Recognizing that I did have it within me to do it — that I had the confidence and trust in myself. It was also about allowing that kind of grief in. As human beings, we are all about building walls. You experience a trauma, and then you build a wall against that trauma. As an actor, you have to avail yourself to trauma over and over again. Despite knowing what it might do to you. That was the challenge.”

*Lupita’s thoughts on slavery: “For one thing, I didn’t know that I didn’t know about slavery. I was like, “Whoa! There’s so much going on in this world that I didn’t realize I didn’t know.” In its entirety, “12 Years A Slave,” and the experience of being in it, has been an education, and I hope its the same for people who watch it. What struck me watching the film is how much it is about a call to love. The only that gets Solomon through those 12 years is love for his family and the faith that he would see them again. Slavery, as it is depicted in Solomon Northup’s autobiography and in Steve’s film, is very human. That institution was created by human beings in a way that we don’t necessarily want to acknowledge or accept. Recognizing the humanity all around. Even a person like Epps, who does such despicable things, you cannot deny in the way that Michael Fassbender plays him that he is human. He is acting out of circumstance and fear and ignorance.”

*On her Oscar chances: “My name is coming up alongside people that I have grown up watching and who I respect so deeply. That is incredible and unbelievable. At the end of the day, at this point — before the film has opened — I’m just so excited that it is resonating. I’m so excited that the thing Steve set off to do is being received and received positively. I just wish for that to continue. If awards buzz is the way in which we get people to see it, then so be it! For me personally, my reward has been being a part of this process. It’s a reward that just keeps giving. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

*She’s a major Brad Pitt fan-girl: “I’m still trying to get over the fact that my name is being mentioned with freakin’ Brad Pitt! It’s a lot…When I was cast in his film [I thought] surely I was going to meet him one day. I wouldn’t say I was star struck. I was stunned. I was like, ‘Yup, this is actually happening.’ “

[Via People Magazine & HuffPo]

She seems like a lovely young woman. I’ll admit, the thing that shocked me was her age. I thought she was like 22 or 23 years old. She’s 30 years old and a graduate of Yale Drama? Damn. Those are some amazing genes. Anyway, now I really want Lupita to get an Oscar nomination. And not just because I want to see her go toe-to-toe with Oprah Winfrey! I actually think that whenever Oprah meets Lupita, Oprah will probably have a big lady-crush on her too. Julia Roberts will be a different story though.

She’s THIRTY?! Wow, she looks like a *young* woman–I was thinking that she might be four or five years older than me. But the ones who “make it” past the age of 25, I think, are generally less snobby.

And nothing against Oprah, but if all the reviews I’m hearing are true and not exaggerated, I hope she (Lupita) sweeps the floor.

    • lisa says:

oprah’s movie was pleasant but not unlike something i would see on lifetime. not that people havent won oscars for less than worthy films before, but no one could wuzob oprah if she doesnt win.

i havent seen 12 yrs a slave yet but i look forward to lupita’s red carpet looks. she’s adorable.

  2. MonicaQ says:

Damnit, when I shave my fro that low, I look like Deion Sanders circa 1996. Lucky. She’s freaking pretty as heck and seems chill.

    • ldub says:

LMAO. love the fro comment. my cousin said something similar (arthur ashe).

also, her SKIN!!! i’m LIVING for it.

  3. Kiddo says:

Oprah has a lot of political clout in Hollywood, more than the acting, this is what Lupita is up against. We shall see.

    • frisbeejada says:

you nailed it, nothing more to be said…

    • Samtha says:

      Yep.

    • pwal says:

I think Oprah had some clout, but not as much as once thought. If she did, OWN wouldn’t still be struggling and her so-called HW friends would’ve jumped at the chance to provide content for OWN.

It would be one thing if OWN was toast-then I could see HW rallying to ‘make it up’ to her, but OWN is in ‘meh’ territory, therefore her performance in The Butler doesn’t warrant the carrying her on their shoulder treatment.

Lupita has a great chance of upsetting Oprah, especially if she continues to conduct herself with grace and intelligence. And frankly, I can only see Oprah approaching Lupita in the zero hour, specifically, during awards season, since the campaigning would be nearly over.

  4. Maya says:

She’s so beautiful. She has the kind of face you just want to gaze at.

  5. Ank says:

    God, she’s gorgeous!

  6. lower-case deb says:

i like that so far the cast has given quite knowledgeable, level-headed remarks about the subject matter. i feel that this is a grown up cast for a grown up subject that makes the whole thing (film itself and the surrounding materials) ideal for a good discussion

  7. Grant says:

I think Oprah will still win, she has way more pull in Hollywood and people will want to award her in the same way they wanted to award Sandra Bullock for the Blind Side a few years ago. That being said, I’m sure that this marks the beginning of Lupita’s career as a silver screen siren. She’s just enchanting!

  8. Jay says:

    Sweet Jesus, but she’s stunning.

She sounds like a humble, hard-working, intelligent woman. Whether or not she ends up with an Oscar, I wish her the very best in her future career.

  9. kimmy says:

OMG, her skin….its leaving me speechless. She is gorgeous and very intelligent-sounding. I would love to see her up against Oprah and Julia!!!

  10. KT says:

She is absolutely gorgeous. I can’t stop staring at her. I’m obsessed!

  11. judyjudy says:

    She is lovely.

What is the origin of the last name Nyong’o? Is it Kenyan?

  12. Tillie says:

She’s such a class act. I’m struck by how she mentions everyone–from the casting director to the author of the source material–by name and is happy that McQueen’s vision was executed. I think that’s the sign of a real collaborator. She’s not pretending she did this alone.

  13. littlestar says:

Don’t know anything about her, but OMG SHE IS SO BEAUTIFUL! She has the type of face and body that I could stare at all day long, in a non-creepy way of course….. 😀

Edit: Looked at her pics again, and she ALSO has amazing style!

  14. Kim1 says:

When she said, on the View, this was her first professional acting job I thought she was 22.I wonder what she did between graduating HS and going to Yale? Another career after college?

    • Vanessa says:

She is a filmmaker as well! She shot a documentary about African albinos… I guess she did that kind of work in the meantime 🙂

    • T.C. says:

She went to University first and then Yale for graduate school in drama. Work on film making between Uni and grad school.

  15. Lee says:

wow. She came across as well spoken, educated, self aware, and she’s gorgeous to boot. The entertainment industry is in desperate need of more women like her.

  16. truthful says:

    Dang, beauty and smarts!!

she looks so youthful for 30, its hard to believe.

    Good for her!!

  17. Crack Fox says:

Dear God, she is sexy. How much you want to bet Fassbender TRIED IT.

    • CaribbeanLaura says:

Testify girl, those beauty brands need to come calling!!!

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

We should have a petition for Vogue/VF to interview her, or at least do a spread. She looks fabulous in everything I’ve seen her in so far.

      • Elodie says:

She did a small edition for Vogue, urgh she is doing that dress a favour tbh!

I’m all for anything boost her up there, it’s hard enough in that industry, go get it Lupita!

    • LAK says:

L’Oréal is off the table because Terry Pheto already has that brand.

She’s the lead female in TSOTSI and she’s in MANDELA LONG WALK TO FREEDOM

  20. Samtha says:

She’s stunning. And 30! Wow. I would have pegged her as the same age as Jennifer Lawrence.

  21. cc says:

god she’s beautiful *.* love all those dresses

  22. Susanna says:

I don’t know if she will but i already love her amd hope we get to see much more of her regardless of her oscar chances. I think chiwetel is a shoe in for best actor. He really deserves it. I hope Steve McQueen wins best director believe it or not if he does that would be the first time in history a black director wins the Oscar for best director.

  23. MonkSolo says:

    she’s gorgeous!

  24. Stef Leppard says:

She is just breathtaking. I hope she gets more roles and we see more of her.

  25. lucy2 says:

She is so beautiful! I agree that she should get some modeling offers, she’s lovely and has great presence in photos.

I always root for the underdog, so if it’s Lupita vs. Oprah…sorry Oprah.

  26. neelyo says:

    I love her already.

I should have known the writers at People magazine wouldn’t know how to spell check. It’s ‘wringer’, not ‘ringer’.

  27. Jo says:

wow. She is extraordinary – talented, beautiful, intelligent, well-spoken. I hope we see a lot more of her in movies and I so hope she gets nominated.

  28. taylor says:

I’m really pleased (for the sake of society, I guess) that she went to university AND grad school.
Anyway, she seems grounded, lovely, articulate and man, is she stunning!

  29. MissCherokee says:

My sister went to graduate school with her. Yale Drama is 3 year program average age of entry is 25 years old. So being 28 or or even 30 is normal. Yale is not Hollywood where if you don’t make it by 22 years – you have no career.
Yale actually rewards those who went to undergrad and have actual acting chops.
Unlike, 90 % Hollywood, the actors who attend YDS actually are educated. In Hollywood, a GED is big deal…However, YDS weights the class heavier towards men. So more men then women. Always, because in the theater – casts are more male heavy. Plays are written with more males than females.

YDS could be less sexist and promote more gender equality but alas they don’t….

  30. some bitch says:

LOVE. She’s smart and absolutely gorgeous. I hope we see a lot more of this woman in the future.

  31. Emily D says:

She is not that stunning, sorry she’s average I think all the hoopla is the fact that black women desperately want a dark skin chick to tote up, and no one has every said anything about her performance which leads me to believe it’s nothing special. Fassbender likes biracial/light girls let it go!

    • cate says:

first of all, there’s your taste and everyone else’s taste. I think she’s gorgeous and it has nothing to do with the fact that she’s a black woman.

second, google some reviews for the film and see what critics are talking about her performance. she’s one of the stand outs of the damn movie.

    • Annemarie says:

Wow, seriously? Get over yourself. You don’t get the final say in who’s beautiful and who’s “average”. I happen to think she’s beautiful and NO, it’s not because I desperately want a dark skinned woman to be successful. What an ignorant thing to say as if a dark skinned woman can’t be beautiful period without people having some kind of motive. Also, you’re wrong about Michael Fassbender only liking light skinned girls. He dated Nicole Beharie, who is not at all light skinned, so please grow up and develop some intelligence. You would benefit greatly from it.

  32. JayneGH says:

I love Lupita soo much and she’s soo beautiful..she used to star in an African Series called Shugga -love,sex,and money and she was my favorite character…she’s a very passionate young lady..I’m happy she’s come this far. 🙂

  33. IamAcylon says:

A: She looks her age. I don’t get the deal of her looking younger. I am older than her and we look the same (regarding age).

I do think she is looking average in those pic, but she is stunning, beautiful, and Powerful in the promo pics for this movie. I was SHOCKED to see a dark skinned, real hair, African women cast in this movie.

    B. “I think all the hoopla is the fact that black women desperately want a dark skin chick to tote up, ”
I don’t agree with your statement. Nobody cares about dark skinned women. Dark skinned (African) women are usually overlooked, or are the tokken, fat/ drug addict/ best friend or the patronized etc.

In American and English culture women who have light skinned/ mixed race/ European features are considered as black. ‘Black’ Hollywood’ mainly consists of dark males and light skinned females.
No one gives a shit about dark women.

My background is African and I am tired of Americans etc. trying to define blackness. Where I am coming from they are not even considered as black but mixed raced etc.

I wish there would be a ‘hoopla’ of black/all women to promote dark skinned women but this is not going to happen.

For this site; Lupita Nyong’o is just another (I don’t know how to word it) safe ‘Tokken’ who can’t do wrong, see Michonde from the Walking Dead, who is not pretty but celebrated (her looks) because she’s an ugly black= safe.
This just reinforces my opinion of the safe black female token for Mostly white patronizing females.
I would like to say more but I can’t find the words and I don’t know how to explain.
