Jamie Dornan cast as your new Christian Grey: great choice or just terrible?

wenn3014867

At long last, we have a new Christian Grey. And surprisingly enough, I would hit that. What an odd turn of events. After Charlie Hunnam wimped out (yeah, I said it) of Fifty Shades of Grey, the studio had to do a whirlwind casting call to find a replacement. One of the leading contenders turned out to be Irish model/actor Jamie Dornan, and now Dornan has been named your new Christian. Dornan is 31 years old, so he’s the right age for Christian (whom I believe is in his late 20s). Dornan is pretty hot too, and he looks great without clothes. And… that’s all I’ve got. Do 50 Shades fan-girls really need more?

Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan has been tapped to replace Charlie Hunnam as Christian Grey in the Universal and Focus adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Dornan plays Sheriff Graham Humbert in ABC series “Once Upon a Time”; he’s also played a serial killer in BBC Two crime drama “The Fall,” and he appeared in Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette.” The 31-year-old thesp performs in an Irish folk duo and has modeled for Calvin Klein, Christian Dior and Armani. His modeling experience may be useful, as the part will require him to act in explicitly sexual scenes.

Dakota Johnson will co-star as Anastasia Steele, with Sam Taylor-Johnson on board to direct. Universal and Focus Features declined to comment.

The project was hit with a huge curveball when Hunnam departed after being attached for just a month. Universal said Hunnam’s exit was due to scheduling issues with “Sons of Anarchy” and upcoming movie “Crimson Peak,” but some sources said battles over a rewrite and the actor’s doubts about the role may have played a part in his decision.

When Hunnam exited, U and Focus execs decided to go for more of a discovery and brought in Dornan and Billy Magnussen to test with Johnson last Friday. Though the studio considered bringing in more actors to test, as of Wednesday morning sources said no one else had been brought in.

Universal will now work quickly to land thesps for the remaining supporting roles that include Steele’s roommate Kate, a role for which U had already been testing actresses prior to Hunnam’s exit.

Michael De Luca is on to produce the adaptation of E.L. James’ sexy bestseller, which is set to bow Aug. 1, 2014.

[From Variety]

Believe it or not, I’m pleased with this choice and I’m relieved that producers chose an actor who is actually sexy to someone like me. As opposed to… you know, the more fan-friendly or twee options. Even though this project should have been cast out of the CW (apologies to Ian Somerhalder once again), I’m glad that they actually chose an actor who seems capable of rough, dirty sex. And yes, I’m not more likely to watch this mess, even though Dakota Johnson still seems like a boring and terrible choice for Anastasia. Blah.

  1. Bopit says:

    I would hit that HARD.

  2. Anna says:

Question: the movie is going to be like porn, no? What kind of rating do you give that kind of movie? XXX? Kids are going to be sneaking in to that movie…oh boy

  3. Anna says:

Whoa, had no idea he was Irish. But I like. Still dont care about the movie, but was a big fan of the Hot Sheriff Who Was Killed Off Too Soon on Once Upon A Time. Come to mama!

    • Erinn says:

AHA! I knew he looked familiar. I liked him.

    • whipmyhair says:

Broke my heart when he died, he is all kinds of beautiful/sexy/handsome

    • momoftwo says:

Let’s start a petition for him to speak in his native Irish accent…that would make Christian Grey 100x hotter!

    • LadyAnne says:

      Everything you said !

    • drea says:

I was pissed that they killed him off. Dornan/Sheriff vs Dallas/Charming, Dornan wins every time. O’Donoghue/Hook is pretty hot, though.

      • NerdMomma says:

Yesss! I kept hoping he would somehow magically come back, because he’s ever so nice to look at, but Hook is doing it for me now. However, a Hook/Sheriff love triangle with Emma would be a fantastic storyline. As for 50 Shades, didn’t read it and don’t care, so I won’t watch no matter who they cast. Yet here I am writing Once Upon a Time fan fic on a message board, ha!

    • chalkdustgirl says:

NerdMomma, I agree! I’ve never read the books and don’t plan to, but his laid back, subtle charm may very well encourage me to buy a ticket to the movie…but yeh, I love Colin much, much more.

  4. Eve says:

Bummer…I was rooting for Coockie Monster.

I mean, the dialogue alone would be greatly improved.

  5. Hubbahun says:

Oh Jamie don’t do it…this film should even be being made. My inner goddess told me that. **barfs**

(On another note, can we stop with the phrase ‘hit that’? It’s just awful!)

    • Anna says:

OMG. Who is gonna be cast as the Inner Goddess?????

      • Kronster says:

        Me, me, me!!! Cast ME!!!
I can pout! And cheer, and whatever the f*ck she does there.

      • drea says:

I’m almost afraid to ask, but what or who is the Inner Goddess?

      • Nono says:

        drea

Anastasia, the protagonist, has both an Inner Goddess, who likes to drink and merengue, and a subconscious, who is the disapproving, tut-tut one.

Somehow none of the three are respectable or even likable personalities.

Ugh E L James and her awful writing. I’m having PTSD flashbacks just thinking about it.

      • Anna says:

lol, I never actually read it but my BFF was reading it in pdf version and would occasionally email me a page or two, to share the pain (it was a hate-read for her). it was PAINFUL how bad it was!

      • drea says:

Ah, I see. Just from that, you can tell it started out as bad fan fiction. I don’t want to be too mean, but I swear the author of this series and the author of the Twilight books were most likely unpopular women who had low self-esteem and didn’t get laid much.

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I really don’t care who plays Christian Grey. I have never seen such hoopla over who will be cast. I’m so sick of it, I’m almost ready to play the role myself. If they want a middle aged woman with no acting experience, that is.

Having said that, this man is very handsome.

    • skyler says:

      Totally agree.

    • Abby says:

Came over here to say all of what you just said, except I wouldn’t touch this film with a ten foot pole.

Basically he’s hot, don’t care about this movie, won’t be watching. But I’m glad Hunnam isn’t in it anymore!

    • Emily C. says:

If they cast a middle aged woman in the role, it would suddenly become a very interesting movie.

  7. Kit says:

The books are garbage but I might just have to rent the movie if this guy is in it. He’s very attractive, and that last picture… all I can say is WOW.

    • booboochile says:

even those going to see the movie at the cinema are saying they are going in disguise, they don’t want anyone to recognize them. There’s an air of sheepishness surrounding some of the fans..haha

    • amilu says:

Am I the only one who didn’t know there was more than one book? 50 Shades of Gray is all I’ve ever heard about.

  8. ABOUN says:

I find myself delighted at his casting don’t know why cos I never read the book but he is waaay hotter and more suitable than charlie Hunnam.. I would hit this guy at anytime of the day..damn he is hooooot..

  9. Mia4S says:

Well he’s C list, has no problem getting naked, and on TV series The Fall he plays a horribly violent misogynist. So yeah. I like him so I’m sorry he went there, but his career was limited to begin with so why not?

At least now maybe the idiot fans will leave Matt Bomer and Alex Skarsgaard alone!

    • Katie says:

And yet he still manages to be totally hot in The Fall. I felt weird the whole time being really attracted to a serial killer…

      • LilyRose says:

Yep, me too. I kept thinking “But he’s a killer!” And th fact that he is so “normal” when he isn’t killing added to the character’s story. Anyway, looking forward to the next season.

      • Ruth Dunbar says:

Me too. He was totally hot in The Fall, as was Gillian Anderson.

    • Steph says:

He’s a very talented actor. He’s awesome in The Fall. I can’t wait for the next season.

  10. CaribbeanLaura says:

I have never read the books and don’t plan to (I prefer my brain non melted thanks). That being said I think Charlie Hunnam is hot but this guy is SMOLDERING!!! Hope this choice helps his career more than harms it.

  11. Samigirl says:

I just started watching OUAT, and he instantly jumped out at me. The man is SEXY. However. I’m wondering how well he speaks with a Western accent. I may actually see this craptastic movie now, just to support JD.

  12. Debbie says:

Whaaaaat? You mean Alexander Skarsgard lost to *this* guy? 😉

    • Beth says:

Isn’t Alex Skarsgard a little old for this role? (Not that I don’t totally love him, I’m just saying.)

    • Minx says:

There was no way in Eric Northman’s tank top that Alex Skarsgård was ever going to touch this role with even his littlest toe. Same as any of the other big names mentioned. Alex’s dancing card is currently booked. If he were sitting at home catching up on some old knitting projects, it still wasn’t gonna happen. His name was being tossed into this hot mess to give it street cred. That’s all. His management said it was nothing but rumors. They were right.

      • mom2two says:

I don’t think Alex was ever going to do this role. He’s pretty busy-with the Giver filming, supposedly doing the charity trek with Prince Harry next month (right? Did I read that correctly?) and TB starting filming in the New Year…and not to mention Tarzan has to be starting up soon, last I read on that was that they cast Christoph Waltz and was looking at Emma Stone for the female lead. I think they were throwing him out there for a name to say the part had some cache but I think after Hunnam left, Dornan realistically was the best they were going to get.
Jamie is a good looking fellow. Acting wise, I’ve only seen him OUAT and his part was regrettably brief and he did his best with what he had, which wasn’t much. I just don’t think, coming off great reviews for The Fall, that this movie is the right movie for him. Sure he’ll be a name but at what cost?

    • blue marie says:

Be happy Skarsgard lost it to this guy, I hate that his name is even mentioned in reference to this pile o’ poo

    • Jen says:

For him to have “lost” to this guy he would have had to be interested in the first place, and he never was.

    • Mia4S says:

I think people are missing your smirk face @Debbie! Read the story people. They were chasing Alex, he wasn’t interested and told them NO. It’s spin to try and have you not notice they got their fifth or so choice!…but he was the best one! Really! Believe us! LOL! 😉

      • cr says:

I don’t think the producers/EL James were ever chasing Alex, or Matt Bomer. I think that was a fan thing. Alex wasn’t going to come out and say that he wasn’t interested, or being asked, that’s not his thing. And even though Matt did say he wasn’t interested it didn’t stop the rumors.

      • Jen says:

According to the entertainment trades like THR and Deadline, the producers WERE trying to get him, at least as an option.

      • cr says:

@jen: Ok, finally read the Deadline article, but I’d gotten the impression even before his management announcement that they’d never been approached and he wasn’t interested anyway.
If they really did call his agent with an offer, I hope his agent just started laughing.

      • Debbie says:

Thanks, Mia; at least SOMEone knew I was being sarcastic. From now on, I shall point out all my smileys for clarification. 🙂 <- This is a smiley, meaning I am happy.

  13. Beth says:

I’m embarrassed to admit that I read this back when it was still fanfic, and did not get into the book series or the movie hoopla. Something I can get into? That underwear picture of this Irish dude. Jesus!

  14. Frida_K says:

Poor guy. He can kiss his career goodbye right now.

  15. Tessa says:

He’s hotter than Charlie Hunnam, imo. Hotter in the slick pretty kind of way that I believe the character calls for. I am a fan of Robert PAttinson, and I dabbled in Twilight, but never got into the fanfic porn craze that a lot of fans did. I heard of Master of the Universe years ago, and it’s crazy that it’s now a book and soon to be a movie. Who knew? Crazy.

  16. Andrea says:

This guy was so hot on Once Upon A time. I’m torn bc I want him to have a great career and this movie looks like a trainwreck. On the other hand….he’s pretty hot which means maybe the movie will at least showcase his hotness.

  17. Ank says:

    YUM! Great choice!

    A bad book =/= a bad movie

I still have hopes. I’ll definitely watch it.

  18. Mrs.Darcy says:

I’m surprised he is risking his career on this, he is very hot in the U.K. right now after proving his mettle in The Fall, this could really backfire. I hope it doesn’t interfere w/series 2 of The Fall, Gillian Anderson and he have great chemistry 🙁 He could’ve gotten a much better part in an indie I’m sure, kind of disappointed he is going this route.

    • Myrto says:

THIS. He was so great in The Fall, very creepy with an angel face. I wasn’t expecting much from a former model and boy was I wrong. And now he’s cast in that crap. He’s better than this.
And now I’m going to spend the rest of the day staring at his underwear picture. Unf.

    • Celia says:

I think his wife is pregnant so he might have needed the money. Can’t really blame him if he’s doing it for his family and the wife is okay with it.

  19. Ninks says:

I have zero interest in 50 shades and I’m probably never going to watch the film, but I have to agree that Jamie Dornan is a very good choice. I didn’t really see him in Once, but he has been incredible in The Fall which aired on TV on this side of the pond. He can definitely do dark, twisted and sexy.

  20. TherapyCranes says:

Something about his face is unattractive to me. He looks better almost naked.

  21. the other Kate says:

What a relief. He does nothing for me, so I don’t have to see this movie now 😉

  22. Maria says:

    He’s gorgeous as hell.

I’ll be watching this for giggles (online, for free, drinking wine).

Frankly, this will make him well known whether or not it bombs, and I doubt will hurt him too badly.

I like Charlie but not for this (I should also probably shut up now considering I’ve not read the books, lol).

  23. Jen says:

This is a good choice. He’s moderately good at playing a psycho molesting serial killer in The Fall (not great though, he mostly just broods while the music and atmosphere do most of the work). It’ll hardly be a stretch to play another creepy almost serial killer.

  24. Alexandria says:

Well Johnson is the perfect casting for Miss Anastasia in my book. Anastasia is as dull, blah, boring, lifeless, and un-charismatic as they come. She instills a great sense of ennui in me.

  25. Axis2ClusterB says:

I guess all ten billion upcoming posts about this steaming pile of crap are going to involve some sort of smack talk about Charlie Hunnam? Good to know.

I do wonder why every article involving something to do with Benedict Cumberbatch doesn’t have to mention him pulling out of Crimson Peak.

    • fallen says:

      This!

    • Dia says:

      ^^^THIS^^^

    • Emily C. says:

Because on this site, Cumberbatch is a god-alien thing who can do no wrong, whereas the site has a serious hate-on for Hunman for some reason.

      • Axis2ClusterB says:

Exactly this. And it irritates the CRAP out of me because Charlie has a really stellar rep with every fan who has ever met him and everyone he has ever worked with, and doesn’t spend his time flashing oddly worded signs at paparazzi.

Not to say that Cumberbatch doesn’t have a good rep, of course, just that I don’t think Charlie deserves all of the ‘flaky, diva, wimp’ shade that’s being thrown at him on this site.

    • Rida says:

I know right! It’s so annoying! And Charlie is a million times hotter than this guy.

    • the other Kate says:

really? hate on Charlie Hunnam? I mean: I love Charlie, I read everything about him, but I didn’t notice this “hate”… but I could’ve missed something, considering english is not my first language (not even the second)

  26. eliza says:

    Good luck with thst dude.

Sad when a 50 Shades of Gray story leads on Good Morning America. Whatever happened to important news?

  27. Harpreet says:

Is he what you would call Black Irish? Am Canadian, so not familiar with that whole concept…

Also, he looks soo difference without facial hair, like Anton Yelchin.

    • Kezia says:

Lol, no he is white, has very sallow skin judging by these pictures, there are lots Irish people with black skin here (in Ireland) he’s just not one of them!! I’m really afraid for him that this film will ruin his career before it even starts.

  28. Liz says:

This movie is for people who want well-shot soft core porn. So I will be watching at some point. There was an interesting article about how there needs to be a better market for soft-core porn because boys shouldn’t be learning that anal and fisting is a ‘norm’. (Lainey talked about it and I totally agree). Not that Anastasia Steele is a role model either though. Sigh. Maybe this post was pointless.

  29. Celeste says:

He’s definitely hot. I might watch it now that he’s been cast.

  30. GeeMoney says:

Good luck to him… he’s going to need it.

  31. grabbyhands says:

    It’s terrible for him professionally.

Even though I guess it was inevitable, I am still disappointed that he decided to take it-I had really hoped that he would heed all the bad reviews and scorn heaped on this pile of trash and continue to slowly build on the good reviews that he got for The Fall.

  32. insomniac says:

Eh. He’s another one like Henry Cavill who’s obviously goodlooking but leaves me completely cold.

Then again, nothing in the world could make me watch this movie, so they could have cast Dustin Hoffman as Christian for all it matters to me.

  33. Tiffany says:

I guess my request for Kellen Lutz fell on deaf
    ears. That’s okay producers…that’s okay.

  34. Sunny says:

oh nooo Jamie is better than this s*hit!!!!

  35. Little Darling says:

Am I the only one who doesn’t think this is going to be a hot mess? It definitely has the potential to be a cheesy mess, but I’m actually rooting for it to do well a la twilight and give all the fan girls wet panties.

There are a lot of erotic movies that have basic plots but tons of nudity and sex and they did just fine. I want it to succeed that way we can stop talking about it because you know if it tanks the discussion will go on and on…

That said, I’ve never read the books. 🙂

    • Emily C. says:

The books are pro-rape, pro-abuse, misogynistic, and complete lies about what BDSM actually is. As the despicable author has her claws all over the movie, I do not expect it to be one bit better. So I want it to bomb, and bomb hard.

      • cr says:

That, and the writing is so beyond bad it’s almost a parody of bad.

      • Maureen says:

You gotta admit this woman lucked out MAJORLY. She went from writing made-up crap on the internet that only fans of Twilight were reading, to a set of major-selling books, and now a movie headed by a major movie studio. And you know she’s richer than God. It’s amazing if you think about it.

    • bob says:

It could have been quite interesting with the Director and screenwriters they’ve managed to get on board, but as Emily C says above, the writer herself has too much clout and will fuck it up royally.

  36. Diana says:

Noooooo! I loved him as the Huntsmand on OUAT, why, oh why did he take this stupid role?

  37. Really says:

Perspective from someone who enjoyed the first two books- I like this guy a lot better than Charlie. In the book there is so much detail on how his pants hung on his body frame, and I see that same body frame in those Calvin ads. Lustfully and unapologetically looking forward to the movie.

    • Tig says:

So agree with you- this guy is a much better “fit” as to how CG is described. He is a real eye candy for sure!

  38. Algernon says:

    Poor man’s Henry Cavill.

  39. Emily C. says:

And there goes any real career Dornan might possibly have had. I hope he’s making more than $125,000 for flushing everything down the toilet.

  40. Devon says:

I’ve only seen him in Once Upon a Time and in those scenes with Regina, he did radiate dirty sex. I hit it and hit it hard.

  41. Sachi says:

He’s alright. I don’t feel a tingle while looking at his photos.

I don’t really care for this movie.

But I saw bits of that Pacific Rim movie and I never knew Charlie Hunnam can look THAT good.

I always see him on SOA commercials looking scruffy, so when I saw him on Pacific Rim and he looked young and fit, I was suprised. He looked gorgeous. 😀

    • Axis2ClusterB says:

SoA Jax and Charlie Hunnam have totally different ‘looks.’

      • Sachi says:

Oh, I know. I meant that I finally saw what the producers must have seen when they cast him as Christian Grey. His SOA image is what most people are aware of so the protests about him not looking right for the role started in the first place.

Pacific Rim showed that he did/can have the body and looks.

  42. Rabia says:

He’s WAY hotter than Hunnam. Seriously, I don’t understand how people are looking at these pics and saying he’s not attractive. He’s got the perfect looks for Christian Grey. And he’s obviously not averse to taking off his clothes. He’s a great choice, as far as I’m concerned.

And I don’t think it’s going to be career suicide for him. He’s a virtual unknown who’s never had a lead role in a feature film. This is a step up for him, not a step down. And no matter how awful the final product turns out to be, I think it’ll still do a respectable number at the BO due to curiosity alone.

  43. Maureen says:

I’ve seen him on The Fall (that Gillian Anderson show where she plays a detective and does a HORRIBLE British accent but which is otherwise a pretty decent thriller) and he’s not too bad, but he’s not memorable. The role he plays is a highly manipulative man who lives a double life, so he’s really playing two characters almost, although we see his “normal” self the most. By taking the SOG role he’s really solidifying himself as the creepy woman-hater guy. Reminds me of something Skarsgard said one time about how he was refusing any more parts as a rapist because he had done it twice already and didn’t want people saying, “If you need a rapist, call Skarsgard. He’ll rape like no other!” That’s Alex’s quote and it can now apply easily to Dornan.

  44. Sonia says:

    Yes! That would work!

I didn’t think the last guy cast would look right at all, but this one would be great!

I do wonder how an erotic book will translate into a movie.

  45. TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

Fare thee well Jamie Dornan, we barely knew thee.

  46. MavenTheFirst says:

Watched him in The Fall. Meh, he’s not sexy. Or anything else.

  47. anais says:

I would hit that so hard too….if he thought I was hot…which he wouldn’t.

    (pleeeease?)

  48. lc says:

He does have a Cavill vibe indeed. Pretty but wooden and awkward.

  49. amilu says:

I just started watching The Fall last night. I only made it through two episodes before I heard about his 50…Gray casting. Now I can’t look at him without feeling a little disappointed.

(I really like his wife, Amelia Warner. She’s the prettiest thing.)

  50. Caroline says:

I liked him on Once Upon a Time

  51. moon says:

He was great at the huntsman in OUAT and physically he’s hot. At least he looks like a man, not the pretty boy RPat/Zac Efron types pretending to be men. His personality (from his previous roles) don’t seem aggressive enough for Christian Grey, but maybe he could pull it off. Whatever. Man is yummy. Shame he’s married.
