Lady Gaga: ‘Playing into the gossip of the tabloids, that’s just not what I’m about’

Here is the new cover of Attitude Mag, with Lady Gaga looking… I guess this is her version of normal. I even sort of like her expression on the cover. Quite honestly, I feel like Gaga has been phoning it in a little bit with the promotion for ARTPOP. Remember how she promoted Born This Way? She covered literally EVERY magazine ever. She gave delusional, self-aggrandizing interviews, she went on and on about her process and how every Gaga fart is precious art, etc. While I’m glad she’s not going all out this time around, I do wish she would say more crazy sh-t. Bitch has changed! Anyway, I guess I’m getting my wish in this interview. Gaga talks about Madonna and Gaga basically says Madonna was trolling her but she (Gaga) doesn’t care. HA.

As it turns out, Lady Gaga was more than pleased to ruffle Madonna’s feathers. In a new interview with Attitude, Lady Gaga addressed her conflicts with the Queen of Pop over the Gaga song “Born This Way.”

“I have to be really honest, I was completely kind of floored that Madonna was singing my song on her stage every night! I’m certainly not thinking about anybody but me and my fans when I’m on stage,” Gaga said to Attitude, referencing the fact that Madonna took to performing a mashup of “Born This Way” and her own song “Express Yourself” during live concerts last year. (The songs share a similar beat and melody.)

“The fact that I was on her mind at all. I mean, Madonna’s … she’s Madonna. I looked up to her for a long time. I’m not quite sure what her intention was -– to do that in the show, but I don’t really care,” Gaga continued. “I think playing into the gossip of the tabloids and, I guess the fodder of the competition, that’s just not what I’m about. She chooses to use her voice the way she chooses to use hers and I choose to use mine the way I use mine. All it meant to me was that Madonna Ciccone was singing my song on her stage and I’m 27! And as a punk-rocker from New York, I’ve basically been hoping that I would become so good that one day I would piss off Madonna!”

Gaga has addressed her dispute with Madonna before, but rarely in such specific terms. Last year, during a concert in New Zealand, Mother Monster told fans that she was trying to stay above the fray.

“That doesn’t make me feel good at all,” Gaga said about tearing others down. “That just makes me feel like I’m not a good human being … I don’t even want to fight back because it’s more important to me to keep writing music. Because that’s really all I care about, is the music … things are really different than they were 25 years ago, and that’s what makes ‘Born This Way’ so relevant for me. We’re socially in a different place and it’s OK, we don’t have to all slice and hate each other anymore.”

Madonna wasn’t shy about her stance that “Express Yourself” was an inspiration for “Born This Way.”

“I’m a really big fan of [‘Born This Way],” she said during a 2012 interview. “I’m glad that I helped Gaga write it.”

For her part, Gaga still doesn’t think there are similarities between the tracks, and blames the whole dust-up on something else entirely.

“I truthfully believe that was nothing about those records sounding alike, and everything about this gay icon versus gay icon [is] nonsense,” she told Attitude. “I don’t need to take anybody’s torch. I have no interest in taking anybody’s torch. I am over here and they are over there and if you feel connected to it the door is open for you to come in and enjoy this with us. But this need for competition was everything that ‘Born This Way’ isn’t about!”

[From HuffPo]

“I think playing into the gossip of the tabloids and, I guess the fodder of the competition, that’s just not what I’m about.” Ooooh. So, Gaga is basically saying that MADONNA started the beef and that Gaga doesn’t want to engage. Gaga is thisclose to saying that Madonna is “bullying” her, I think. While I agree that Madge is largely trolling Gaga, I also think Madonna was and is still amused that Gaga is jacking Madonna’s well-worn shtick.

Also: Gaga gave an interview to SiriusXM where she said she wants to have “tons of kids… I think at least three. I really want to have a family and I really want to nurture my children.” You can read more here.

Only interesting thing about this – Gaga with kids? Urm, I dunno, she’s one of those really self-involved “artists”, I feel like she’s one of those super temperamental types and much as I think she’s talented, I don’t see her as a mum. But who knows? There might be a nurturing, self-sacrificing Gaga that we know absolutely nothing about.

  2. Nya says:

Wow, she actually looks quite pretty in that fresh makeup.

  3. eliza says:

The thing that shocks me are all these magazines I never knew existed.

  4. Eve says:

I don’t like Madonna (at least, not anymore) but she could literally take a dump on top of Gaga’s head and I’d still side with her.

  5. Mandy says:

OMG, Gaga as a mother? That is hilarious! She is way too self-obsessed to have children. I actually like Gaga, but she is deranged if she thinks she should have kids.

  6. Kiddo says:

I have no idea whether she’d make a good mother. I do, however, love that cover photo, and it’s steam-punk influence.

    LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
    That is all

  8. loie says:

Omg. Please, do not have kids!

  9. Felice says:

I don’t think what you see of someone in the public eye is a good representation of how they could be as a parent. Alicia Silverstone seems normal but we all know she has wacky habits with her kids.

  10. Jayna says:

You missed her interview with The Guardian then promoting it. Pretentious, martyr, the usual Gaga interview, how she sacrifices for her art and fans and the victim role as usual. She slays me.

I LOVE that article. Oh the shade! The comments are gold too. Gaga has indeed been promoting this album hard, just most of its been across the pond. Most of the Gaga articles I’ve read in the past few months have been from UK publications. She even held her listening party in Berlin even though holding it State-side would have brought more attention. I wonder why that is. I don’t know as much about the behind-the-scenes of the music industry but when movies are bombing or bound to bomb in the good ole US of A, the foreign market pimping begins.

She did an eight-song concert in NY last night at midnight. Some of it was effective and some was very disappointing. Her choreography has become boring and the live situation shows the weakness of many of her new songs. I don’t like this ’80s shouting Gaga that is appearing on many of her songs.

Here’s the concert. plays in a loop. Wherever it picks up it will start over after the end and you can catch the beginning even if not where it starts. The highlight for me is the beginning a brief Aura as the intro then with Gaga in some ridiculous outfit, face covered, singing coming through the audience. Oddly enough, it works in a really crazy way. I guess it’s also because I love Artpop the song. Singing on the piano Dope is all kinds of stunning. Even though she’s talking about giving up drugs and alcohol, which is strange since she was high writing most of this music. She always contradicts herself.

She goes off on all her pretentiousness rambling about Jeff Koons the artist also before Gypsy, yawn. but Gypsy is another strong live performance because it’s on piano also. Many of the other performances fall flat and she’s relying heavily on a backing track to do the work on some of those dancy songs.

Is that a mop on her head?

  12. Nev says:

Way too much talking. Trying to explain everything. Please.

  13. Dommy Dearest says:

Just like Robin Thicke, Gaga was unoriginal and stole the music. She’s a big bully and hypocrite. She is undeserving of fame and what she has. Tripe.

    • gg says:

And just like Gaga, Madonna was not original and stole Express Yourself from The Staple Singers “Respect Yourself”.

      • Ariana says:

No she didn’t. Express Yourself and Respect Yourself sound NOTHING alike. Have you even heard Respect Yourself, or are you just parroting what Lady Gaga fans say bc they’re so embarrassed about their “mommy’s” blatant rip off?

  14. fingerbinger says:

Gaga is saying and doing anything and everything to promote this album. I think it will debut at #1 and then steadily plummet.

  15. Yolanda says:

I can’t believe she thinks of herself as a punk rocker. LOL. In what world would her music be considered punk rock? She really is delusional.

  16. Marianne says:

That picture of her in the floppy hat is the MOST normal I have ever seen her. Why cant she dress more like that?

  17. Paige says:

She looks very nice. To all the people claiming she will be a bad mother, celebrities have personas, we don’t know how she is behind closed doors with family & friends so we really can’t judge how she’ll be as a mom.

  18. Seapharris7 says:

I’m by no means a GaGa fan, even though I have a few of her songs on my phone. But whenever I read anything about her, I hate myself for even that. As if her connection to Terry Richardson wasn’t enough to make me shun her… PLEASE STFU!

  19. wendy says:

First off I will say that I like both Madonna and Gaga.
I grew up on Madonna. Desperately Seeking Susan and the video for Material Girl had major influences on me as a young girl. Truth or Dare was amazing. So many things Madonna did were.
I also like Gaga. I can see how she has been influenced by Madonna but also many other artists. To say she is copying her career is kind of ridiculous. I never found Madonna to be as strange as Gaga is.
The only time I hear Express Yourself in Born This Way is when they are played together. Otherwise I don’t notice the similarity. It doesn’t make me think of Madonna.
In general I don’t think of Madonna when I see or listen to Gaga.
I think they are totally different artists.
I love Madonna. But I think she gets too much credit for her work. People forget that she had/has a team of people helping her accomplish all she has. Like her material girl style was developed by a fashion stylist. Her iconic clothing was designed by JPG and even he got inspiration from fashion history. Pretty sure her songs were all largely written by someone else too. Also when she came out people were calling her a copy cat just like they call Gaga.
Why is Madonna allowed to take inspiration for her work from other people and other people aren’t? That doesn’t really make any sense. Express Yourself was a rip of someone elses song.
    I dunno.
I like them both. Don’t think they are one in the same.

Many artists have other artist inspirations.

    • fingerbinger says:

Gaga was also “inspired” by Grace Jones,Freddie Mercury(Queen), Elton John, and Andy Warhol. The problem is Gaga is blatantly ripping these other artists off and her hardcore fans seem to think she is an “original” and she isn’t.

    • Jayna says:

Madonna co-wrote most of her music. Even now in interviews with old collaborators, they will say Madonna has an ear for melody like no one else and why her cagtalogue is so amazing. Quite a few have writtten in depth about the songwriting process with her over the years . Gaga has lost her gift for melody and lyrics in trying to be so different. and the songs have suffered because of it. She probably needs for co-songwriters on her music these days to bring her quality of songwriting back up.

  20. Maria says:

I think she or at least her management must realize that she’s not as “important” as she used to be in the pop industry and therefore changes her strategy for every album. Have you seen her appearence on Graham Norton? She performed at the very beginning (smart bitch!) and towards the end. And regarding the crazy: her facial expressions while performing the first song. My God I’d throw some holy water on her if she’d sit on the train next to me! And she said she dresses this way to deal with the VOICES in her head. Yeah right, it has nothing to do with her attention seeking ways! 😀
I swear she should stop wearing her crazy costumes and save up for her future Gaga-Bunch…

  21. Hubbahun says:

Difference between the two is Gaga, if you take away all the schtick and hoo-haa, can actually belt out a tune.

  22. paranormalgirl says:

    “And as a punk-rocker from New York…”

No dear, that would be Patti Smith. And leave her alone. There is NOTHING punk about you and before this incarnation, you were a singer-songwriter (and a pretty decent one at that.) But never were you punk.

    • sumodo1 says:

Thank you, I caught that, too. Punk? Lou Reed is spinning in his grave!

    • gg says:

I see her style as Broadway Musical Disco and she needs to just go ahead and be in a big fat musical because the Ethel Merman in this one is strong.

  24. Go Crazy says:

She was soooo out of it on the Graham Norton show last night that he cut straight to the another segment. Looks like she’s doing coke.

  25. Snowpea says:

This bird is a nut job.

I wish she’d get rid of the costumes and just pare it right back, so it’s all about the muzak.

Then perhaps, people might actually start buying her shiz again.

  26. phlyfiremama says:

Hussy, please. That is EXACTLY what you are about.
