Mother of octuplets is single, lives w/ parents, has six other kids under eight

octuplets
Members of the medical team that delivered the babies, initially thought to be septuplets

New details are emerging about the woman who gave birth to octuplets in Los Angeles earlier this week. It was only the second time in known history that octuplets were born and all survived. The family’s name has not been released to the public out of concern for their privacy, but it is known that they currently have six other children at home, and their ages are seven, six, five, three and two, including one set of twins. The mother is thought to be 33 and single, and lives with her parents. Her father, who is said to work as a contractor in Iraq, is going to have to go back soon to earn money to support his huge extended family. The grandmother has admitted that her daughter refused to undergo selective reduction of the embryos, which were implanted through invitro fertilization. Selective reduction is a somewhat controversial practice in which some viable embryos are given saline injections in order to increase the chances of survival for the other fetuses in the womb. It’s also controversial to attempt to take so many babies to term, as it pushes the limits of human physiology. The babies are doing well, with all but one of them, a boy, breathing on their own. The other seven newborns are being fed donated breast milk through tubes.

The mother of the octuplets born this week already has six other young children and refused the option of a selective abortion when told she was expecting multiple babies, it has emerged.

Instead the woman, who has not been publicly named, chose to go ahead and give birth, giving her a total haul of 14 children.

Today, as all the babies continued to make good progress in a Los Angeles hospital, it emerged that the mother’s existing six children were under the age of eight, including one set of twins.

The family live with both her and her parents in the well-kept suburb of Whittier, near Los Angeles.

Angela Suleman, her mother, disclosed to the LA Times today that her daughter had embryos implanted last year and “they all happened to take”. Despite doctors giving her an opportunity to selectively reduce the number, she refused.

The subsequent birth, while being only the second time in history that octuplets have been born and all survived, caused worldwide attention – but also some discomfort among critics who have questioned the medical ethics of implanting multiple embryos, which makes multiple births more likely.

“What do you suggest she should have done?” Ms Suleman told the newspaper. “She refused to have them killed. That is a very painful thing.”

The mother, who described the newborn babies as “so tiny and beautiful”, admitted that being able to bring up 14 children – the others are aged seven, six, five, three and two – would be difficult. She added that her daughter’s father was going back to Iraq, where he is believed to work as a contractor, to help support the extended family.

[From Timesonline]

There’s no way to take care of that many newborns without a lot of help. I remember seeing a Discovery channel special about a couple in Wisconsin with quintuplets I think, and they had members of their church come in to help feed and cuddle the babies. They had a whole schedule worked out and people were so happy to be able to help them with the babies. Watching newborns is something you don’t really have to convince people to do, and they had more than enough volunteers. Maybe this family can work out a similar arrangement while keeping their privacy if that’s important to them. There’s always the reality show route, although that seems like a last ditch resort. I know I wouldn’t want to subject my family to that. There’s also the option of going on Oprah, or maybe some morning talk shows. In that way, they could present their family to the public without exposing them beyond a level they’re comfortable with. People are genuinely interested in hearing more about them, but if they don’t want to go on camera they’ll hopefully be able to get by without resorting to that. It makes you feel for them that their grandfather is going to have to return to Iraq to make ends meet.

Update: Thanks to those of you who pointed out that the woman’s father, not the babies’ father, is going to have to return to Iraq to help support the family. That has been corrected in the text. According to ABC News, the woman is thought to be single and living with her parents. The family also really seems to be wary of the media and are not likely to grant interviews any time soon.

Update 2: There’s some question whether the woman was taking fertility drugs on her own as breederina mentioned, or if she had in vitro fertilization. According to her mother, she had the embryos implanted. An earlier story stated that officials at the hospital “have not been authorized to release information to the public on how the babies were conceived.”

  1. Leandra says:

The only ones I have sympathy for here is the babies. The parents are totally irresponsible having in-vitro with six children already at home. How ridiculous. They have no decent housing either and they want more children? Brainless.

  2. georgiagrl says:

    WHY????????
People keep making selfish, choices and the world can’t sustain what we already have. I hate to judge, but damn!

  3. Sammy says:

The mother is unmarried. The person going to Iraq to work to support all these kids is the mother’s FATHER, the grandfather of the 8 new babies! Medical ethics people say the most embryos that should have been implanted was four, not eight.

  4. nycmom10024 says:

Whoa! Judge not, lest you life is completely above judgement. Appartently the family can support these babies.

Because something is not handled the way you would handle it, does not make your way the right or only way.

  5. Kait says:

I agree with Leandra – how irresponsible to implant that many when they already had all those kids.

And I read it as the woman who gave birth’s father is going to Iraq, not her husband. I thought from the header on this that the father of the octuplets was going to Iraq.

  6. Celebitchy says:

You guys are right, it’s the grandfather going to Iraq! I will fix that, thanks.

  7. nycmom10024 says:

Often times four are implanted and none take. We do not in fact know how many were implanted.

Yep, it seems like more kids than I could take on, but I am not raising her kids.

  8. Yadira says:

the grandfather??? Wow! this totally changes the dynamics of their situation. She already has 6 kids that her parents are supporting and decided to pay to have 8 more added to a household sustained by her parents? That is a very immature person. I only have 2 kids and would love more but I know that the world is already struggling with the amount of people and the lack of resources. So selfish.

NYCMOM, the point of a gossip column to read gossip and comment about it. Judging is part of that.

  9. Kayleigh says:

I don’t understand why you would try to get pregnant when you are SINGLE, LIVE AT HOME, and have SIX other unfathered children. Did she have a problem conceiving the six other babies? Her parents are either nuts or saints.

  10. pebbles says:

to hell with Jon and Kate and their cushy lifestyle! i wanna see this woman on TLC!

  11. Em says:

I dont care how many kids someone has, as long as theyre not on welfare. If this family is providing for these children 100% , then great.
I cant imagine having 14 kids all under the age of 8. Good lord

  12. nycmom10024 says:

Yadira, you are correct in that this is a gossip column/blog the title is celeb-itchy. This is not a family of celebs as far as we know, right.

So it’s the celeb’s we are supposed to be judging right.

But thanks for the thought. I realized I compartmentalize judging celeb’s who put themselves out there and all others. Judging peeps is judging and I personally think that is wrong and doesn’t add anything to my growth as a person. So thanks for shining a light on my own hypocrisy.

    ———————————–
boy you think you have heard everything then this. Are there no guidelines? I hope the all children will be all right health wise.

  14. Carrie says:

If the mother is single and already has 6 kids including 3 toddlers, what the hell was she thinking having in vitro in the first place, never mind having eight embryos put back? (which most ethical clinics would never do, imposing a limit of 3 or 4). She’s not even infertile.

I know we’re not supposed to judge other people’s private decisions, but does anyone else think this is bat-shit crazy, not to mention irresponsible?

  15. HEB says:

I’m impressed that with all this news leakage about her family etc. that we don’t know her name yet. I’m guessing people in the local area know who she is though…

  16. Kayleigh says:

You nailed it Carrie, excatly what I feel about this story, totally iresponsible.

  17. boomchakaboom says:

Wow. 14 kids, is that right? Somebody needs to buy themselves a farm to work. I can’t think of any other way to keep 14 kids busy.

Did the grandfather win the short straw drawing? I’d say so.

  18. daisy424 says:

    Who is the sperm donor?

  19. breederina says:

I read that she may have been taking fertility drugs on her own. Generally there’s a psych evaluation before the IVF process is begun. There is a reproductive medicine and practice ethics panel and you know they’re going to jump all over whom ever would give fertility treatments of this nature to a 35 year old mother of six who has filed for bankruptcy. Kaiser said she came to them already 3 months pregnant. Lot’s of open questions here folks.

  20. rules says:

why would anyone that is single and not able to support themseleves (she’s living with her parents) want MORE? I just cant even fathom want was going through her mind.

  21. Lisa says:

Bring on the free van, the free car seats, the free cribs, the free formula, the free diapers and free clothing, the tv spots, the crying stressed mother, the welfare check is in the mail, then she will turn around and sue the doctor for implanting her with 8 instead of the 4, then the kids will get free medical care. Get the point?

  22. DLR in Canada says:

This is a most peculiar story. When I first heard about this, I thought wow, a litter, eh? 😮

Then I hear the woman is single and already has six children. I thought, WTF, she already had six kids and wanted more so did an IVF? 😮

I don’t have a problem with how many kids someone has. Go ahead and have 100 if you want, but if you’re on any sort of governmental support (i.e., welfare) paid by my tax dollars I think I reserve the right to say, WTF were you thinking?

So bizarre, I don’t know what to think.

  23. Mandy says:

I think it may have been George Carlin who once said, “It’s a vagina, not a clown car!” There are 6 billion of us here already, yet certain people insist upon breeding as though we’re trying to repopulate the earth after the Great Flood! And my dad would kill me if I had ONE kid out of wedlock, he sure as well wouldn’t come out of retirement to take responsibility for my stupidity, much less PAY for me to get knocked-up half a dozen times.

  24. Raven says:

I think this woman is giving the Duggers a run for their money. And she’s a lot younger than Michelle Dugger, too. One more thoughtless doctor implanting multiple fetuses and she’ll pass them right by.

  25. CiCi says:

eh – the story is confusing. CNN makes it sound like the father of the babies is returning to iraq, not the woman’s father. It says Angela Sulemon is her mother in law. If she is a “mother in law” clearly the woman is married.

In any case, I’ll never understand why she needs to be doing invitro when she has 6 already.

  26. Annie says:

    Holy crap.

Maybe it’s me, but I assumed that IVF was only used when the woman in question had a low chance of conceiving without medical help.

6 kids prior to the 8 say to the contrary.

Seems like somebody’s not only very selfish, but very self-important.

  27. Rosanna says:

Yadira, commenting and judging are two *different* things. Commenting is something like “I don’t like her choice” or “I would never do what she did”, while judging is something like “it’s brainless to do what she did”. I hope you all are (or will be) able to see the difference, sooner or later.

  28. Rosanna says:

Wow I guess this family really likes babies. Personally, one would be enough to drive me nuts LOL

  29. guest says:

u know she did it for profit. jon & kate, duggars, who was that other couple that dateline followed for awhile? they’ve made millions.

  30. sissoucat says:

As far as I know, in some European countries they implant up to 4 embryos, while in some the limit is 2. Nobody with 6 kids would be eligible.

I hope there’s no mental issue with the mother.

Whatever… I hope these kids are raised in a loving household.

  31. Wonder Woman says:

At least she didnt have an abortion, I commend her for that

  32. jess says:

child abuse. plain and simple. those children will end up taking care of each other a la the duggars while being systematically robbed of their childhood. its not right and its not fair.

  33. aleach says:

i read that she filed for bankruptcy a year and a half ago, so obviously she couldnt support the SIX children she already had.
what doctor would give this woman IVF if she already has 6 kids, in debt, and no father figure around? something doesnt add up here…or the dr. is just a loon.
the whole thing is sad, and its not fair to all those kids.

  34. Wif says:

Jess, just curious about your opinion here…100 years ago, when people had 5-8 kids as the norm, all taking their hand in raising the others because the mom was busy washing the clothes by hand and killing chickens, would you consider that child abuse?

  35. L says:

yo, nycmom, everyone has a right to their opinion, that’s life — having thoughts and feelings and difrerent points of view — so don’t go throwing around how wrong it is to be judgey. if someone thinks someone is doing something stupid or irresponsible, they should be able to have an opnion about it without feeling guilty. contrary to what you say, if you just accept everything without making a judgement in your mind you actually will not grow as a person… you will not learn from the things you are exposed to or witness, which may prompt you to make a judgement that is either negative or positive. oh and by the way, i think people here are saying their opinions, not that they believe their way is the only right way. I think you are a hypocrite because you are in fact judging the people who are expressing their thoughts.

  36. Feebee says:

Before all the sh&t hit the fan I was totally with the mother over not reducing the embryos etc. However it’s hard not to have a forceful reaction to the total irresponsibly of everyone involved from the mother to her medical team. How is it even ALLOWED that a single woman with 6 kids can be implanted with 8 embryos. Spare me the freedom of whatever comments. IVF costs around $20,000 per round. Not much you can do for the mother she sounds beyond help and god help the kids but some of the medical professionals should be looking at some ethics questions.

  37. sissoucat says:

jess, that’s not child abuse, it’s just part of living in a big family. Chores are shared.

What kind of childhood is appropriate for your eyes ? Is it being idle while your parents grant your every wish ?

Many kids work around the world. Those are robbed of their childhood, not those who help the younger ones putting their clothes on.

And doing a part of the household chores was never abuse.

  38. aleach says:

wif- ya, mothers did have a lot more kids than we usually see today, but that was before birth control. and they def. werent using fertility drugs.
    so your argument isnt relevant.

  39. aleach says:

edit- that should say, “yeah” not “ya” whoopsie!

  40. Heather says:

I AM judging this woman, plain and simple. Because in some cases, people should be judged. Does anyone think it’s fair to her other babies? Are any of them going to get the one-on-one attention and affection they need to grow up healthy and happy? Not unless they have a staff of at least 3 other adults. This is insanity. It’s beyond comprehension.

I don’t judge her for refusing selective abortion, but to get implanted in the first place is baffling. There is no way to put a good spin on it, regardless of whether we have all the facts or not.

  41. Emily says:

At first when I heard she had 8 babies I was all “Wow! Well I hope she has the help!” But then I found out she had 6 OTHER KIDS at home and it’s her parents who are taking care of them. And now grandpa has to go back to Iraq to support his family? Technically he doesn’t have to at all since they aren’t his kids!!

Why, why, why did she decide to have more kids? The kids don’t even have a dad! No wonder she wants to remain anonymous-she knew everybody would judge her harshly when all the details came out!

  42. Sammy says:

If, as someone said, she was taking fertility drugs on her own….just where in the hell do you get those? I’ve never seen them on the shelves at the drugstore! Or on an infomercial late at night! I seriously wonder about the motive behind this.

  43. sissoucat says:

The BBC site say she’s married and the babies’ father is a contractor in Iraq.

Maybe we should wait for more facts before unleashing our contempt on her curious reproducing behavior.

  44. Jess says:

“At least she didnt have an abortion, I commend her for that”

No, she just went ahead with a very selfish decision that hopefully will not affect those babies.

I am reminded of one couple who did in vitro, had six or seven babies and all but ONE died. That’s humane? That’s fair? People are so selfish it disgusts me.

Also, it’s a well-known fact that children from multiple births tend to have pretty serious health issues during the course of their lives. So, these poor kids are nowhere in the clear yet.

  45. Kayleigh says:

Sammy, considering her location, she could have some friends on the other side of the border to help her out with those pills. It’s not hard at all to get things from Mexico that aren’t legal over the counter here in America.

  46. Codzilla says:

Lisa: I was thinking the same thing.

  47. Sammy says:

Yes Kayleigh, you are absolutely right! Now I’m REALLY questioning the motive behind it all!

  48. vdantev says:

Yeah, hollow empty purposeless women need to inflict their dysfunction on a new generation by over-breeding. Selective implantation of embyros ? Makes me shudder. Nazi-esque eugenics taken to the next logical step. People like this belong in zoos.

  49. jess says:

@wif – i never said 5-8 children was child abuse. 14? 18? that is ridiculous. especially when you filed for bankruptcy a year and a half before.

As someone who had a lot of chores growing up (and is fully supporting herself through college), I see nothing wrong with chores for children. Its when the children have to start raising the other children.

I also think that we can both agree that 100 years ago, families needed to support themselves in a much different way that they do now. ie your example about the mom and the chicken.

I think a household with 14 children under age 8 is completely irresponsible. young children need attention from their parents, and i just dont see how there is enough time in a week, let alone a day, for those children to get what they need.

  50. daisy424 says:

I have a friend In Phoenix who gets some of her drugs in Mexico. In the last year or so Mexico has tightened up on some drugs.

You now need a prescription to get Xanax, so I bet they would consider an ovulation drug such as Clomid ‘controlled’ not OTC.

  51. aleach says:

you didnt need a prescription to get xanax in mexico…all this time? and i missed out? damn!!
    ha kiddingggg!

  52. CC says:

she’s catching up with the Duggars.

  53. Cinderella says:

All I can say is have fun, lady.

    Wouldn’t wanna be you.

  54. Miriam says:

Shit, this is what perezhilton.com is reporting about this razy lady:
“She is single. She used a sperm donor, someone she knew, who donated sperm a long time ago. He donated the sperm for the first six kids and she used his frozen sperm for these one. I don’t think the sperm donor knows about these eight kids. He was not involved.””(statement from a neighbor)
    There’s more…

  55. Wif says:

aleach, I wasn’t making an argument about anything, I was trying to ascertain what exactly Jess defines as abuse. I recognize that things are different now than 100 years ago, but I think it’s important to question our perceptions of what is abusive. Therefore I don’t appreciate being told that my argument is irrelevant when I was simply asking a question respectfully.

And by the way, Jess, thank you for stating your position clearly. I’ll have to think on this one for a while.

  56. shelby says:

I know who would happily take the Octuplets off her hands!!! Yes siree, Brad and Ange would scoop them up in a nano-second.That woman needs her mental health assessed, because if its true shes single and living with her parents, what a crazy cow, What would make her go for a 7th child. Its selfish to the children and what about her poor parents, she must be bludging off them unless she won the lottery.

  57. Elsie says:

So Gramps is ending retirement to go to Iraq and work as a contractor? Lovely daughter that Nadya is, whatever her name is. Grandpa says they have a much bigger place somewhere else. Bless his heart. Hmmmm, I wonder if the bigger house is in Whittier, HACIENDA HEIGHTS,
LA HABRA HEIGHTS,CITY OF INDUSTRY, or
LA PUENTE, CA? All very nice L.A. suburbs, I might add , but no Beverly Hills.

  58. caribassett says:

Thank God the babies are breathing and hanging in there. Poor tiny things must be having a tough time of it.
I cant imagine what on earth the Mom was thinking though.

  59. Mandy says:

vdantev’s Nazi reference is apt, because the Nazis actually DID award “Mothers’ Crosses” to women for having a certain number of children: 8 for gold, 6 for silver, and 4 for bronze. The mother in this story would have gotten a gold Cross with diamonds for having more than 12…

  60. dubdub2000 says:

Child services needs to look into that situation stat, because that woman is clearly out of her mind.

I feel real sorry for those kids who did not have a choice in this matter: we dont choose our parents.

    This is so messed up.

  61. i wish i could be more enthusiastic about the birth of these octuplets, but i’m not. of course i’m glad they’re all alive and healthy (at least for now), but i can’t help but feeling like their mother did an increadibly insane/selfish thing. getting pregnant and having a baby you can’t support by accident is one thing–it sucks, but it happens. but having eight viable embryos implanted when you already have six children at home? that’s just selfish and cruel, if you ask me.

  62. NotBlonde says:

Hmmm…bizarre situation. I wonder if she’ll ever come out and tell people just what the heck is going on with her and her 14 kids…

Like someone said before, it seems highly irresponsible to have 14 children under 8. Kids that young need a lot of personal attention and nurturing to have them develop normally. How can she do that? Hopefully a bunch of people from her church will help and those kids will have a ton of “aunts” and “uncles”.

  63. Mairead says:

There are so many odd and conflicting stories, it’s difficult what to believe. But I’d start with disbelieving Perez Hilton and his randomer “neighbour” who possibly couldn’t find that neighbourhood on a map!

Whilst it’s likely that more than four embryos were implanted, could it possibly be that “just” four were and they all split, leaving us with four sets of identical twins? It wouldn’t be any odder than a 35 year old woman loving babies so much she wanted more (nevermind the fact that 7 cute little babies and toddlers grow into teenagers pretty quickly); being able to pay or get credit for infertility treatment although she is supposedly bankrupt and her father is going back to the safest place in the world to help pay for it all.

I think we’ll have to wait a few days or weeks for the logical story to come out. At the moment, because the mother won’t speak, and give the full story, what’s being reported is probably mostly untrue.

  64. Maritza says:

I agree with Pebbles they should have their own reality show, at least that would help them.

  65. DD says:

whaaat? A single woman who already needed to be supported by her parents and who already had 6 kids, chose to have medical intervention to have yet another kid? That is so selfish and irresponsible.

  66. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    Dear Lord, poor Grandpa.

He has to go back to a friggin’ war zone to support his…what are calling this woman, a maniac?

Sew that womb shut. My ovaries are kicking each other just thinking about this.

  67. Codzilla says:

Daisy/aleach: I’m seriously pissed that I could have purchased Xanax without a prescription in Mexico for all this time, and now that they’ve tightened the screws, I’m ass out of luck. My parents visit good friends in Arizona every year, so I could’ve asked Mom to cross the border for an afternoon, and then smuggle some pills past the federales and back into the US … Nah, Mom would make a lousy criminal — she’d look all jittery and paranoid, and the feds would be all over her.

  68. Jill says:

No. These people do *not* need a reality show. The media needs to stop giving these people attention. I agree that this is child abuse. To the kids already born and these poor octuplets who are going to have some serious medical needs–think it feels good for a tiny little baby with so little subcutaneous fat to be stuck with needles and hooked up to tubes? It is just selfish to have this many kids at once, especially when you already have six. She is probably hoping for the big reality show payday.

  69. confuzed says:

Did anyone think about a surragate gone bad? Perhaps the “parents” bailed when so many were actually fertilized.
She could have been looking for a way to provide for her six children.
Fertility was a proven fact considering she was the mother of six.

  70. stellapurdy says:

Don’t fool yourself into thinking this won’t cost the general public some money. When those babies have health issues the cost of their insurance, if they have any, will be factored into the cost of what you pay for insurance. And that’s if those babies and their effed up mother actually has insurance.

It’s disgusting. I want the doctor or clinic who allowed the IVF to be held responsible along with the batshit crazy mother.

  71. boomchakaboom says:

I’m appalled at hearing about the Mexico border screws being tightened. I hope everyone sees that the terrorists HAVE WON. We can’t even go to effn Mexico for our medical needs. GODDDDDD….WHY?WHY?

Fascist pigs are running this country into the ground. They want us all to be
non-smoking, non-chubby, non-medicated, but DRUNK. It’s LEGAL and ENCOURAGED. If this country were a man, I’d dump his ass.

  72. NJMDPS says:

Sick. The doctors should also be held responsible for this. All the odds are against these children being normal and being raised normal. More burdens to society. Totally irresponsible.

  73. Kat says:

Social Services better look into this, because in a year or two, when they are no longer small, cute, cuddlie babies, SHE WILL DO IT AGAIN. Something is just not right about this story. What parent is okay with supporting & raising their unmarried daughters brood, in their old age? They all have gotta be nuts. Need crackpot investigative reporter to sort out what is real & not.

  74. chamalla says:

    Wow.

I don’t want to judge, but stories like this make me mad. I can’t even have one baby and this lady has 14. It’s not fair.

  75. H says:

CNN reported that those babies each have 2 nurses. They are in the NICU which is a high level of care. If she has insurence that cost is going to be passed along as stellapurdy said. If she doesn’t have it now every taxpayer in the state is paying for her and her childrens care. With my last baby I developed complications at the end of pregnancy. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks. I just got my explanation of benifits from my insurence co. and it cost 70,000 for my hospital care. This lady has been in for longer than that and her birth was way more complicated then mine. By the time those children go home the cost will probably be at least a million.

  76. Trey says:

This reminds me very strongly of Idiocracy.

Narrator: As the 21st century began, human evolution was at a turning point. Natural selection, the process by which the strongest, the smartest, the fastest, reproduced in greater numbers than the rest, a process which had once favored the noblest traits of man, now began to favor different traits. Most science fiction of the day predicted a future that was more civilized and more intelligent. But as time went on, things seemed to be heading in the opposite direction. A dumbing down. How did this happen? Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd, it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most, and left the intelligent to become an endangered species.

    @ boomchakaboo:
    Preach it girl!

Two questions (and the media never seem to answer the pertinent ones): did the mom lie to the doctors about how many children she already had (as an OB you would not necessarily go to a patient’s house to check on the veracity of her story!), and were the OBs just salivating to be the “first” to implant 8 embryos? Sorry a third, same as one of the other posters: any change of the embryos doubling due to fertility drugs. I think the information will eventually come out just for the sake of the hospital covering its reputation!

  78. Diva says:

You can get just about any drug over the internet, although, you’re taking the risks that come with ordering from an unknown and unregulated source. I know for a fact you can get Clomid over the internet. But I also know for a fact that Clomid doesn’t give you 8 babies! The chance of even twins with Clomid isn’t even very high.

  79. jsan says:

“Did anyone think about a surragate gone bad? Perhaps the “parents” bailed when so many were actually fertilized.
She could have been looking for a way to provide for her six children.
Fertility was a proven fact considering she was the mother of six.”

    Really interesting point!

  80. Just Me says:

Talk about selfish! The best thing she could do is put these 8 new kids up for adoption. I’m so sick of these people having babies and the tax payers having to take care of them via welfare, WICS, etc. I’m part of the middle class that is taking care of everyone else’s mess, and I’m sick of it! What a stupid, selfish bitch!

  81. Mark says:

This is not very in keeping with Kaiser Permanente’s preventative health maintenance principles.

  82. Mark says:

    Kaiser sucks.

  83. bionic bunny says:

two facts a local news radio reporter DID dig up:
the implantation took place somewhere in mexico. the woman is not a u.s. citizen, and she will now receive @ $800 PER CHILD/month. that’s not counting the one’s that will be disabled. this is really big business in california. her story to the kaiser doctors was that she didn’t cull the embryos because “it was against her religious beliefs”.
this was all over the radio (i think it was KFI) on thursday. there are no fathers involved. she and her brood will receive free treatment, plus SS, SSDI, and welfare. if there even ARE grandparents involved, they are part of the scam, too, just add up those numbers, granddaddy isn’t going anywhere.

  84. bwoz says:

WELFARE QUEEN. This story makes me effing sick to my stomach. She is just a drain on society and her kids will be to…trust me, I have worked giving people welfare and I have had grandkids on the system whose parents and grandparents have been client of my boss…it is SICK. The same families just keep on draining the system and now there are 15 more people (mom + “first” 6 kids + octuplets) to suck our money. Someone should call child protective services!

  85. Codzilla says:

mark: Agreed. Kaiser is the worst.

  86. Jane says:

This woman is a selfish bitch.

  87. boomchakaboom says:

The medical team should be reviled for accomodating this woman’s unhealthy desire to have more babies. They did it for the publicity for their facility and their “skills” without regard to the mother’s mental health or the welfare of her existing 6 children. Whoever said something about “at least she didn’t have an abortion” needs to just STFU. She should have chosen to focus in her already living 6 children and try raising them to adulthood.

  88. Diva says:

Why is Kaiser getting blamed? They didn’t do the implantation. They came in well after the pregnancy was progressing, right? Like 3 months or something?

I don’t know anything about them in their general activities, but in this case, it certainly doesn’t seem like Kaiser’s fault on any level. They couldn’t MAKE her cull her brood, they suggested it, but couldn’t force her.

  89. Keekee says:

That woman obviously needs mental help STAT. The taxpayers are paying for this, the taxpayers have a right to complain.

  90. morgs says:

someone should have aborted this bitch. This story makes me so effing angry.

  91. morgs says:

and I live in California so I’ll be paying for this bitch’s idiocy. Awesome effing state! And i work in the medical industry with medi-cal/denti-cal. The stories i have to tell. sorry my typing sucks I am waaaaaay hung oveer.

  92. Codzilla says:

Diva: You’re right, it’s not fair to blame Kaiser for this situation. It’s just that I used to live/work in California, and had friends with HMOs whose experiences with Kaiser were generally awful. I guess that’s why I was so quick to bad mouth. Whoops!

  93. Diva says:

I had a feeling they had a general bad reputation, I just didn’t get why they were getting beat up on for this.

    Thanks for the explanation! {=0)

  94. gg says:

Another case of child-hoarding. This should be illegal.

  95. Neata says:

As a single mother of six kids, I’m wondering what in the world would possess a woman living at home with her parents to use hard earned money to pay for the implantation of eight embryos rather than finding housing for the six already here? I have plenty of support and yet I would NEVER think of adding another child, much less eight to my brood. Life is hard enough. Single parenting is NOT the ideal.

  96. Jen says:

Although I’m not in complete agreement with what this woman did – it was her choose.

Just as it has been my choose to have 4 kids (19 mo, 3 yr, 4 yr and 14 yr) and still have the ability to have more… for a few reasons – 1. everything I think about giving up the ablity and right to bare children it brings me to tears, 2. I had 2 docs tell me 7 yrs ago I couldn’t have anymore kids… although I have been blessed with 3 since, and 3. My doc will only do the procedure if he is 100% certain you are ready for it since it is so hard to reverse, and everytime we talk about it I start to cry.

Although I personaly won’t go and get eggs inplanted in me, it is the right of the person (in our free country) to deside what they want.

Yes, my kids get medical assistance from the state, yes we get our WIC coupons, and yes we get a few food stamps – but I also work full time and attend school full time in the evenings. No, my kids don’t get the attention I would love to give them (which isn’t child abuse) because I’m trying my hardest to make ends meat, pay for their need/wants and make a future for my family so that we don’t have to depend on the state and other tax payer for help… But because I accept help I get looked down on by so many, and most don’t see what I’m loosing out on because I am trying to make a better future for my family. Only that “we can’t take care of our own”… we’ll personally I see no issue with helping someone who is trying – just because someone gets help from the state/fed gov doesn’t mean the are any less of a citizen of our great counrty. I understand that somepeople do use the system… and I agree safegaurds need to be put into place to stop that. But please don’t look at welfare, WIC and other assistance programs as a problem – they are their to help people… never know you may need them someday too.

Just so you all know – bespite my ablity to still have little ones, there is no plans of adding to my family in the near future. My Hubby, family and I have so much going on that we need sometime to work out my schooling, new career after graduation, his handman/rental business – plus I want to be able to love my little ones a bit more before I have another… yes there is a possible plan to have another someday, just not right now. (In my eyes I have a medium size family and I always wanted a large family).

Oh, and we do something like they did 100 years ago… we plant our food, love it, pick it, can it and eat it all winter long. And if I have my dream (land), we’ll raise our own meats too.

  97. Elsie says:

Yup, that’s her name, Nadya. I don’t know if the last name is Gutierrez or Suleman. I don’t know where the Gutierrez comes from, and I doubt that’s her married name. I suspect that this woman is not the biological daughter of Angela and Ed Suleman. Also, I think she might have a MySpace page. I entered some identifying data and got 3 results. One of them seems to match very closely. It’s just a speculation on my part, though.

  98. daisy424 says:

    Jen, your story made me wonder;

Why do you continue>/i> to have children if you can’t support them without the help of the taxpayers?
If there was no food stamp programs or WIC, and you had only yourself to rely on, would you still crank kids out?

Why should the taxpayers pony up this responsibility for your kids, when you won’t take that responsibility on your own shoulders?

  100. JUDY says:

That doctor sould have his license pulled for planting those 8 babies in an unemployed, woman with no husband to help pay for those kids. Here we go 14 more kids on welfare and we will need to pay the freight unless she can use those kids to make her millions.

  101. Jen says:

daisy424… I am also a taxpayer, and was before I had my little ones. I got a job when I was 16 and have worked ever since. I have taken care of my kids without assistance (no food stamps, WIC, ect), but do to things that have happened I now recieve a some help. The reason I’m away from my kids so much is because I work and go to school, mainly because I don’t want to keep gettting the help. It is a stepping stone – something to help you when you are down, not a way to live the rest of your life.

Part of the reason we have choosen not to add anymore little ones to our family anytime soon is because we won’t to be able to do more for them and do it without the help. I love my children and would die to protect them… money doesn’t change that.

We don’t go to the movies or out to eat, we own used cars, go to the Goodwill to get school cloths, we plant a graden to help with the food bill… just because someone gets help doesn’t make them a bad people or bad parent. Sometimes it means they are just having a rough time… should I give up my kids because my hours and pay got cut? Or cut back on everthing else and ask for a little help to get through the manufacturing and job cutting slump this county is going through?

I have taken responsiblity for my own… but I also know that being a good parent includes knowing when it is time to ask for help. If I don’t show my kids that even I can have a hard time with things… how are they going to learn that they can have a hard time and still find away, get up and keep fighting? I don’t what my kids thinking this world is only about them… I want them to know you can ask for help and can find it, and when you are able to give the help – listen… someone else will be asking for it, and then it is time for them to give the helping hand. That is the way the our country use to be and it is the way that it should still be, but so many people look down on though that need the help… who is the better person – the one receiving the help and later will help or the one who doesn’t want to help because the haven’t needed it?

  102. daisy424 says:

I too started working full time at 16. Divorced with 3 children at 23. No help from family or my ex-husband. I did it all on my own without help from the Government.

I never said that you were a bad parent. I do see what you’re trying to accomplish and your kids should be proud. You are setting an example of working hard and going to school. Two of my daughters are doing the same, but without any government assistance.

One of the three jobs I had when they were kids was a grocery cashier. I had customers that were on food stamps and WIC. I never once looked down on them and would always take expired coupons from them even if they didn’t purchase that item. When I would see that they were trying to stretch their food stamp $ by purchasing house brand or generic items, I would let a few of their more expensive items go unscanned.

What would irk me was when they would have a case of Heineken (which they paid for in cash). Or when using a WIC voucher, they would have the brand name cereal or high end milk or cheese, not the generic, which I always had to buy.

There were grown men that would come through my line with one single piece of Brach’s candy, it would weigh out to be 2 cents total. They would pay in a single food stamp & I would have to give them $.98 back in change, this continued over and over. They would then use that change and buy beer with it, through my line.
If you need help, that’s one thing, not make a career out of Govt. assist. But after 8 years day after day of seeing that kind of abuse, it’s gets under your skin.
I hope that you graduate with a degree and are rewarded with a great paying job. I appreciate you responding to my questions. Good luck to you and your family Jen.

  103. VeeJay says:

This story is absolutely insane! First of all, this woman has a psychology degree & plans to continue her education by getting a Master’s degree. I don’t see how she is going to have the time, or the money, to pursue anything with 14 kids under the age of 8. Second, being a student myself and living off loans (that I have to pay back) and grants, it appalls me that this woman calls herself a “professional student”. She is a professional con-artist! It disgusts me that our nation in is an economic crisis & this person has the audacity to ask for 2 million dollars to help pay for her children! She should have thought of that before she got herself into this mess. As for any talk-show hosts paying her for her story, I will never watch their show(s) again, because it only perpetuates the moral problem that there is in our country. I am disgusted with this woman! She needs to be evaluated by a professional psychiatrist because she is truly mentally ill.

  104. Jen says:

    daisy242…

Knowing why it upsets you helps me to understand a bit more… where I live things have changed a bit. You no longer get food Staps in little dollar bill books, you now get a debit card. There is no actual money change and it is only to be used for food, no smokes or beer as the change use to be used for.

I agree that lobster and shrimp shouldn’t be bought useing the card… I have even started going to a meat market because I can get meat for $1.50 – 2.00 a pound instead of the grocery store price of $3.00 and up. It’s a bit of a drive to get there, but the saving is worth it if I’ve save up enough to put some in the freezer. I love sales and almost never by anything off sale (well except diapers), I try to keep coupons in my purse, and “genaric” prouduces are just as good as name brand on most things. I even try to use my bigger WIC coupons when cereals are on sale that way it save the county some money. The only time I get name brand milk is if the baby is out and I have to get it before work at the corner store (which I have to pay cash there).

I even breastfeed my little ones as long as I could to save money that way too. The last one was eating table food before he gave it up.

I do hate asking for help… but I knew that I couldn’t do it this time. It was ask for help or loose the house.

Believe me… I don’t agree with what this woman did. Although I love my kids and would love to have more… until we can do better for them we don’t want to have anymore. But at 31 I also can’t say that the day won’t come were we can do better for them and that I never want to hold another gift from my hubby in my arms.

I have been a mom and wife since I was 17 and would never change a moment of it. I do wish we have a bit more, but for now… we are doing the best that we can and hoping for better things in the future.

    Jen,
You are my eldest daughter’s age. You sound like you’re really trying and I hand it to you.
I am glad that you understand where I was coming from and hope you didn’t see my comment as a personal attack.

I know what you mean by having babies. I had to undergo a hysterectomy a few years back and panicked; no more babies for me. One thing I did well! I couldn’t have any more at 49 years anyway. But it was sad for me in a way. But since my daughters have blessed me with 6 grand kids (so far, have two sons who have yet to start a family) I get my baby fill with them.
    I’m sure you have heard this before, but it is so true;
Enjoy your time with them when they are young, they grow up so fast and before you know it, you’re taking pictures of them at their HS graduation.
    Peace.

She is not going to continue her education…she is going to be looking for endorsements, hand outs and freebies….she is a parasite who is esploiting her kids to make as much money as possible.
also why are those A-hole Dr’s smiling…they should ALL be losing their license and possibly face charges for their irresponsibility….it is outrageous! I don’t even think she is of sound mind and those kids should be taken away from her…..she is living in a fantasy world!

  107. Ali8 says:

Why are you ladies attacking each other for getting help for your kids…when it is the men in society who have messed everything up…Corporated American and money/power hungry men…they are the root of all evil. don’t be ashamed, there are too many people in this world and you have to ask yourself what kind of world are you bring kids into??????? there will be even Less natural resources the future, there will be less low paying job (and jobs period) and education is VERY expensive. No body should have kids without a lot of forsight….the kids will only have a miserable life and there is nothing you can do to change that…..

  109. Gail says:

The latest that I have seen as reported in the news is that with the 6 she already had, that she was receiving assistance from welfare, that she was living with her parents (assistance from them which her mom did not seem to be in the mood to continue) and then she has the eight others. She stated on the news that she or no one could raise this many children on their/her own. She said she would just have to accept help in raising them. I personally don’t feel any person (her or someone else)should have more children than she or they care provide total care for and provide for as well. If you are receiving assistance, then you are not able to provide for them. You should never have babies with the intent that a friend or family member will provide for them as anyone can die, move away or become incapicitated and be unable to assist in the raising of the children. This woman’s father is apparently going to Iraq to try to earn money to provide for the group and with the situation there, who knows if he will return at all and then someone will need to help mom of the 14, the 14 and his widow here in the states. Should he be fortunate enough to return age does creep up on us and how long will he be able to continue this quest??
