Adele made the Queen’s Honors List this year, Adele will receive a MBE

I kind of love the minutiae of British honors and rankings. I had to look up the UK’s civilian rankings for this story, and now I am a better person for it. So, in the UK, the Queen and her staff decide which civilians should get special honors (“from the crown”) at the end of the year. It’s always an event, because whoever gets a special honor gets to go to Buckingham Palace and meet the Queen (and the Queen’s purse, and the corgis) and get a little medal or whatever. We know that the Queen can give away knighthoods, but there are actually five categories of civilian honors:

GBE: Knight Grand Cross or Dame Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire
KBE/DBE: Knight Commander or Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire
CBE: Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire
OBE: Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire
MBE: Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire

Famously, when the Queen was trying to be “hip” in the 1960s, she awarded The Beatles with MBEs. In later years, John Lennon was critical of the award and he sent his back. Most of the time, the Queen gives MBEs and OBEs to people in the middle of their careers – people who have done well, who are in their 30s or 40s usually. But this time… the Queen is giving Adele (!!) an MBE. Adele is only 25! That being said… it’s only an MBE. It’s the lowest rank.

She’s been keeping a low profile of late, following the birth of son Angelo in October last year
But on Thursday, Adele will break her cover to make an appearance at Buckingham Palace on Thursday, where she will accept an MBE after being named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for her services to the music industry.

Her new title will be Miss Adele Adkins MBE, which stands for member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

The 25-year-old singer has achieved huge success over the past two years with the release of her second album 21. The record topped the charts in more than 30 countries and was number one in the UK for 23 weeks, selling more than seven million copies in the country. It was certified diamond after 24 weeks at the top spot in the US.

Adele is now a global pop superstar and also won an Academy Award in February for her James Bond theme song Skyfall. She is rumoured to be planning the release of her third studio album sometime next year but has been busy being a mum after welcoming Angelo, her first child with partner Simon Konecki, into the world.

Singer-songwriter PJ Harvey, broadcaster Aled Jones and author Joanne Harris were also on the list for MBEs, while broadcaster Claire Balding was honoured with an OBE. The news comes after it was revealed that Adele’s record 21 has topped Amazon’s list of best-selling albums of all time. She is also the only singer to feature on the list twice, as her debut album 19 came in eighth position.

[From The Daily Mail]

I doubt Adele is taking this too seriously – after all, once you’ve made a list of all she’s accomplished in the past four years, it’s sort of like… “Um, you’re ONLY giving her a MBE?” Girl has an Oscar and a shelf full of Grammys, I’m just saying. Still, I want Adele to sing for the Queen. More likely, though, Adele will get on the floor to play with the Corgis.

The fact that Adele is only two years older than me sometimes makes me feel like crap lol. She’s achieved SO much. I know people usually get this kind of honour when they’re well into their careers but Adele deserves it imo. So talented and beautiful.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I totally agree with you. She deserves it. I admire her talent and beauty very much, too. And I’m sure you are lovely, with many achievements of your own.

    • loveisthecoal says:

She’s two years YOUNGER than me, so I know what you mean! However, I agree with GoodNames; I’m sure you have lots of accomplishments to be proud of as well, it’s just that the whole world may not know about them. 😉

All feelings of inadequacy aside, I LOVE Adele and I’m super excited about this. Gorgeous, beautiful voice, seems like a lovely person!

@Goodnamesalltaken @loveisthecoal Thank you both, that’s a really nice thing to say and haha, I’ll feel more accomplished after I complete my masters degree 🙂
And yes, she’s one of my favourite singers hands down – there isn’t really anything about her that I don’t like.

Actually, the Queen has nowt to do with it. The monarch (or his/her staff) hasn’t had any input into honours for over a century. It’s done by various committees comprising politicians, civil servants and various experts depending on category. Here are the honours committees at present:

    I wub her.
She manages to be a bawdy broad, and classy, all at the same time.
I also find it impossible to resist someone who talks like Ringo Starr, writes like John Lennon, but laughs like Fran Dresher in The Nanny.

MBE is usually reserved for younger people while OBE and CBE are for people who have had longer careers. OBE is also usually presented to military personal, Henry Cavills older brother actually is an OBE. Does anyone happen to know if your award can be upgraded to the next highest honor?

    • sienna says:

Not to the next highest honour, but you can be knight hooded later in life if you make significant contributions throughout your life.

    Adele is flawless. Well deserved!

  7. Maureen says:

She’s talented. There’s no question. But young people don’t have to strive towards anything anymore. Put out a couple hit records, win a few grammies, and you get a freakin’ MBE at the age of 25. It’s ridick. No wonder there’s such an attitude of entitlement among the younger generations.

  8. We Miss You Enclave_24 says:

I’m not a fan of her depressing music but she can sing and is absolutely beautiful!

  9. HH says:

Not only is Adele incredibly talented but she sold 25 mil albums worldwide in an age when people don’t buy albums anymore. That’s big. She released her album in 2011 and it managed to be a top album for 2011 AND 2012. She’s been riding a well-deserved wave of success off 21 for 3 years now and it amazes me every time. She and her talent are just that good.

  10. Dawn says:

Yep, a well deserved honor. Love that voice of her’s, it is flawless and timeless.

  11. paola says:

    Long lives Adele!

  12. T.C. says:

Good for Adel on any honor. Still hate the monarchy.

    • Snarkweek says:

      Lol
Well she has certainly touched more lives this past year, a. And not to mention the fact that she is actually talented. I don’t hate the monarchy but I certainly see them as entertainment only LOL.

  13. Avilita says:

Isn’t she married ? Why the “Miss” then? Maybe she’s not married.

Women shouldn’t have to switch from Miss to Mrs when they’re married. They should’ve the same thing for their whole life and please find something better than “Ms”.
