Obama to appear on cover of Vanity Fair; half brother arrested in drug raid

original

For the past six years, Vanity Fair has reserved its March issue to use as “The Hollywood Issue”, where the talented Vanity Fair photographers do a large portfolio of actors, actresses and Hollywood wheeler-dealer sorts. “The Hollywood Issue” has been a little blah the past few years, so it makes sense that the VF editors are trying to be innovative, by putting the new president on the cover with a large portfolio of his new administration inside. Don’t get too worked up – the VF editors also include a Hollywood portfolio.

It’s no secret that Barack Obama has a bunch of half-siblings. He’s always said that the relation he’s closest to is his sister Maya Soterio. President Obama also has several half-siblings from his father’s side of the family, many of whom still live in Kenya. One of these half-brothers, George Obama, was arrested over the weekend for drug possession – of one joint. The charges were dropped hours later, but the whole story of the arrest is coming out.

All charges against George Obama, half-brother to U.S. President Barack Obama, have been dropped after his arrest in a drug raid, according to police in Kenya.

He was released on Saturday hours later, police added. Obama was arrested in a Nairobi slum, and he was picked up with people who possessed marijuana, said police spokesman Eric Kiraithe.

“Being found with people who are in possession of cannabis is a petty offense,” Kiraithe said. Earlier, police had told CNN that Obama had been arrested for possessing cannabis and resisting arrest, which can carry a sentence of up to a year in jail or hefty fines.

“Police in Kenya do not look at criminals in light of associations with relatives,” Kiraithe said.

Obama and the president barely know each other, though they have met. George Obama was one of the few people closely related to the president who did not attend the inauguration in Washington.

In his memoir, “Dreams from My Father,” Barack Obama describes meeting George as a “painful affair.” His trip to Kenya meant meeting family he had never known.

Barack Obama Sr. died in a car accident when George was 6 months old. And like his half brother, George hardly knew his father. George was his father’s last child and had not been aware of his famous half brother until he rose to prominence in the Democratic primaries last year.

Unlike his grandmother in Kogela, in western Kenya, George Obama received little attention from the media until reports about him surfaced in August 2008. The reports sprung from an Italian Vanity Fair article saying George Obama lived in a shack and was “earning less than a dollar a day.”

The reports left George Obama angry. “I was brought up well. I live well even now,” he said. “The magazines, they have exaggerated everything.”

Obama, who is in his mid-20s, said at the time that he was learning to become a mechanic and was active in youth groups in Huruma. He said he tries to help the community as much as he can.

George Obama sounds like a very proud man. I can’t imagine the range of emotions he must have felt when he found out his half-brother is the President of the United States. As a result, everything anybody in the extended Obama family does over the next four – and possibly eight – years will make international news.

Picture note by JayBird: This isn’t directly related, but I thought this was really beautiful. The Committee for African-American History Observances Quilters and volunteers took 10 (very harried) days to construct this gorgeous Michelle Obama History Quilt, which is now at The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. *Counting down to the inevitable GOP/conservative mouth breathers to jump all over this.*

  2. Anon says:

It’s a scam; he was set up so that the media can bring Barack down slowly. That’s what they do… they build you up just to knock you down.

  3. NotBlonde says:

LOL…arrested in a drug raid! He was in possession of…a joint. I love the sensationalized headlines that are coming out about this (not yours because it’s obviously a joke) but so many reports are headlined with silly crap to get you to read the story like he had 20 kilos of Colombia’s finest when all he had was a joint. I don’t even think you can get arrested for that here. Can you?

  4. geronimo says:

Could not believe this story was on the front page of yesterday’s Observer, a friggin’ broadsheet that should know better. Poor George, the price of fame.

    Great cover tho’.

  5. bros says:

stupid headline and obviously politically motivated. he was picked up by people who were in possession of marijuana and had one joint?

dude, I was under the impression that kenya had much MUCH bigger things to worry about than petty drug offenses and busting a guy with one joint. do the police even operate like this in Kenya? this sounds like something that would happen in the US where we have a heavy police state that has time to focus on petty things like this, because its not, i dont know, Kenya. this is some weirdness.

That’s crazy. Both Barack Sr. and Sr.’s father had many children by many women. Barack has over a dozen half-siblings and over 100 cousins. Are they all going to be perfect? Even Barack wrote about his own drug use – I wish Rush Limbaugh would have something to say.

  7. Annie says:

    LOL.

    It was over a joint?

Well then, there are a LOT of nor-cal-ers that need to be arrested. Cuz they be walking around Berkeley with blunts in the middle of the day.

Heck, we Californians “medicate” all the time. lol. DRUG RAID!

It’s a shame that his family, extended and immediate are getting drug through the mud like nobody’s business.

who even cares? Now, if this was one of his daughters or his wife, well, then I’d want to know.

The process of turning Obama into another JFK is apace

  12. Staralicious says:

What’s the old saying about any publicity being good publicity?…. 😉

  13. CandyKay says:

Ah, shades of Billy Carter and Roger Clinton. They caused trouble for most of their brothers’ time in office.

I’m much less concerned about this than the fact that Obama has already appointed TWO admitted tax cheats to his cabinet – Timothy Geithner at Treasury and Tom Daschle at HHS. Usually we find out a couple years into an administration that the people are crooks, not before they even start on the job.

And I’m no Republican attack monster – I voted for Obama.

  14. George says:

Alright this was a pretty lame reason to write a headline like that, a joint is a joint, not cocaine for crying out loud.

As to the cover of the magazine… why don’t all of the magazines get together, make one month “Praise to the Albama” month and be done with it. He hasn’t done a thing yet, where is there change?
I’m bored with all the media hype. Let’s
get some REAL people on the cover like those that are losing their jobs left and right?

  15. NotBlonde says:

CandyKay, both have dropped out and he’s taking the blame for not doing enough to vet them. I’m just glad that we’re finding out now as opposed to later on and I’m glad that they dropped out instead of going into office and casting a shadow of doubt over Obama’s need to have reputable people in his cabinet.

  16. JMC says:

    George…”he hasn’t done anything yet”?

There are other news outlets that Clebitchy! Check them out–Obama has done quite a few things, actually.
