Amy Adams: ‘I do not really have a style, I finally admit that I’m not naturally elegant’

Even though I love Cate Blanchett and I truly believe she is The Queen Of All, part of me would not be upset at all to see Amy Adams pull a Best Actress upset at the Oscars this year. I only feel that way because La Blanchett has already won an Oscar, albeit for Supporting Actress (for The Aviator). It’s a tragedy that Blanchett hasn’t ever won a Best Actress gong, but it’s also a tragedy that Amy is 39 years old and now a five-time Oscar nominee and four-time Oscar loser. Still, I think Amy is going to lose a fifth time this year, and my only consolation prize for her is that she got really close this year (this was the closest she ever came) and that one day, very soon, it’s going to be her year. She’s going to win everything out there and she’ll be The Queen of All. Here’s one nice thing: Amy is getting a special Spotlight Award at the Costume Designers Guild Awards.

Anyway, Amy covers the new issue (the February issue) of L’Official. Thoughts on the shoot? I think the makeup is glam and Old Hollywood Realness, so much so that it’s almost like we’re looking at some fabulous newly-discovered Rita Hayworth photos. The clothes? Eh. I love the outfit in the black-and-white photos, but I’m not crazy about the Miu Miu on the cover. It looks like she’s wearing cute flannel pajamas and she’s laying on her matching flannel sheets.

There aren’t many excerpts from the cover story, there’s only this quote: “I do not really have a style. I finally admit that I am not naturally elegant.” I think that’s correct. She tries and sometimes she looks okay, but more like than not, something’s wrong. Like, bad hair, bad cut on the dress, weird goth makeup, something. I kind of wonder if she doesn’t need a new glam squad to help her out.

Here’s something I never knew about Amy (or I knew at one point and forgot): she used to work at Hooters?! Did you know that?

I really dislike the blue print on the cover. It is terrible for her coloring and the glam styling is just off.

She really is a beautiful woman but I hate how she dresses for the red carpet most of the time.

I’m thinking her chances for the Oscar are slim, but I’ve been wrong before.

  2. don't kill me i'm french says:

I knew she worked at Hooters: David O Russell and she talked about this job during The Fighter promotion

  3. Thinkaboutit says:

She looked amazing in every single scene in American Hustle. Who ever styled the movie should just move in with Amy and dress her every single day.

  4. don't kill me i'm french says:

Usually the photoshop is awful with her

  5. Mouse says:

Love Amy Adams. Hate the half open mouth photo shoot.

    • L says:

Ding! I agree. She’s stunning, but the mouth thing is weird.

    • GreenTurtle says:

Yeah, her mouth, for whatever reason, looks especially strange when it falls open like that. Like she’s half-ill or snarling. Yeesh, girly.

  6. Kate says:

I think she will win the Oscar next year for that movie she made with Tim Burton and Christoph Waltz. I don’t think it’s sad that she hasn’t won yet per se. I think it’s more proof of her consistent great work. There are very few others who consistently become their roles like that.

It doesn’t bother me that she isn’t great with fashion. She didn’t grow up rich like a lot of these other women. ( Because, yes, that privilege does impact these things.) I think she’s just more concerned with her acting than she is with being a model and I totally respect that. That said, I think a lot of the time people are way, way too hard on this woman anyway.

    • Chinoiserie says:

I agree what you said about Amy, she could get nominated for next year and there is no shame in losing. Also Amy was nominated this year for Best Actress instead of supporting and that might do good for her career since nearly all of her roles are supporting ones. It would be nice to have her do more lead roles for a change.

And I agree with you about her style as well, she looks good in the pictures, not every actress needs to be a style icon, she seems more serious about her career than most.

    • L says:

I also worry about the ‘oscar curse’ when it comes to her winning a award. Esp when it comes to someone who has been nominated several times. Look at Kate Winslet. 6 nominations-lost 5, finally won 1, and then her career (and her personality quite frankly) went poof. She’s done solid work since then, but roles are fewer and far between and less…something.

I feel like Cate and Meryl are the great exceptions to this, but I also feel like its because those two bust their butts.

      • Happyhat says:

Anna Paquin comes to mind too. It’s almost like I don’t want Amy to win until she’s in her 80’s or something.

      • kibbles says:

Kate Winslet could have had the same career as Meryl Street and Cate Blanchett. She is still an A-list star and considered one of the best actresses of her generation. However, her personal life and stupid comments in her interviews became gossip fodder and overtook her public persona. Meryl and Cate have a near flawless public image. They are gracious, classy, have solid marriages, and manage to balance family life with their careers. Kate is now known for her many marriages and comments about weight loss, photoshop, and her children’s living arrangements. I personally think Winslet is a better actress than Amy Adams, Anne Hathaway, and Jennifer Lawrence, but Winslet seems to have willingly taken a step back to just be a mom. I assume that if she keeps her mouth shut and chooses some good roles after returning from a break from the spotlight, she can come back strong and be nominated again for more Oscars.

  7. MrsBPitt says:

I love Amy…She is always great in every role she plays! Did anyone see her in The Master? She was awesome….I love Cate, but I would be thrilled, if Amy took home the gold….

  8. lucy2 says:

She’s so beautiful, but those photos are not done well, especially the cover.
I think she’s one of the very best actresses out there, and I’m kind of rooting equally for her and Cate.

  9. jessibes says:

I think she is so so very pretty.

  10. kibbles says:

The cover is awful. She looks awful despite looking lovely in real life. The half open mouth, the red lips, the blue Miu Miu. All of it awful. The B&W photos look alright but they could have been better.

    • Kiddo says:

I agree. They were going for old Hollywood glamor pin up girl, but failed miserably. Back then, not all of the photos were done with open mouths, some captured smiles or a demure posture with the mouth closed. I like the second B&W photo better, but it still seems as though Amy has sinus problems and resorted to mouth breathing.

  11. Shannon1972 says:

She’s so gorgeous and talented. I absolutely love Cate Blanchette too, but I would not be upset to see Amy win this year. I think her “off” sense of style humanizes her and makes her even more likable.

  12. Pri says:

Ohh but she’s so beautiful…the makeup or sometimes the clothes make her look bad …. I would love her to go au natural.

  13. mellie says:

Love, love, love….and she has played so many different characters and been great at them all. I hope she wins, but she probably won’t. As for her personal style, no it’s not the best, but she sure is naturally beautiful.

  14. Nanou says:

No, she’s not always great in all her roles. She’s a terrible Lois Lane. She failed miserably at playing that character and made it vanilla. I hope she knows lots of ppl didn’t like her in it. Erica Durance is the best.

    • Tazina says:

No more Superman’s girlfriend please! She looked too old for him in that role and brought no life to the character of Lois Lane.

      • Kate says:

@Tazina, every single day you watch movies where the man is older than the woman and you don’t even blink.

Was Christian Bale too old for Anne Hathaway? How about RDJ and Paltrow ? Andrew and Emma Stone? How about Keaton and Michelle? Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in Star Wars? Ford and Karen Allen in Raiders?

Your comment about Amy and Henry’s age isn’t just mean. It’s sexism. Pure sexism. And it’s gross.

    • Kate says:

@Nanou, You “hope she knows?” What a nasty comment.

Just an FYI, I adore Erica Durance but that’s a dumb and unfair comparison. Durance played Lois Lane for 7 years on a show more focused on relationships than on action. She had tons of time to build the character. Adams played Lois in one film with a poor script that was more focused on action than talking with a bad director who is notorious for having a terrible time with women. Even with that, she played Lane as a serious journalist who was compassionate to Superman and sought and found the truth.

I liked her in the role. As did others. So you can “hope” and be nasty all you want. But you don’t speak for me or anyone else.

  15. m says:

amy should have won for junebug in 2006, she was AMAZING in junebug. i think amy is great but i’m really, really, reallyyy hoping cate blanchett wins for best actress this year. cate was just perfect last year in blue jasmine imo.

    • ctkat1 says:

She was incredibly in Junebug. While she didn’t get the Oscar, she did get her current career from that film, so she was rewarded!
She said in one of those Hollywood roundtables that right before she got Junebug/Junebug came out (I can’t remember which), she had decided it was time to give up on Hollywood. She was 31/32, she’d been acting since she was 18 and she wasn’t getting anywhere. And then within weeks of making the decision that it was time to leave and go do something else, Junebug happened and here she is!

  16. Nanou says:

Like she was the only actress playing Lois Lane that had to work with a bad script. I’m talking about ppl that didn’t like her as the character NOT you @Kate don’t give yourself too much importance please.

    • Kate says:

She is, to this date, the only woman to ever play Lois in a film much more focused on action with zero humor written into the script. She was asked to do something totally different than anyone before her. Unlike her predecessors, she was given not one scene with Clark Kent at the DP until the last minute of the film. It was a much more serious, dour film.

Your critique is baseless, unfair and mean. The problems with MOS stemmed from the tone of the movie and that was set by the writer and director. I’m sorry your fave didn’t get the part but the weird attack on Adams is simply not a fair critique.

      • Nanou says:

And i’m sorry you can’t stand the fact that not everyone is all gaga over your fave. She doesn’t have the talent and the spunk to be a good Lois Lane and i won’t change my mind about it. I’m not the only one, just go on twitter and try “Lois Lane Amy Adams” and you’ll see lot of people think the same.

  17. emmie_a says:

I think of her as more perky cute than beautiful – and she looks like one of those women who will age well and look just as perky and cute when she’s much older. And I love her nose!

  18. magpie says:

I think it’s nice that she admits she’s no “fashion girl”. She just lets people dress her for the big events and isn’t into fashion otherwise. JLaw is worse. She really has no style, but I’m not holding that against her. Some of the gals with the best street style like Alba or Bosworth are also the most unlikable.

And it’s good she won’t win again. Winning is a career peak and for most actresses it’s down hill from there. She’ll keep getting the best roles and her work will win out one day.

  19. Adrien says:

She’s too goofy to be taken seriously as a fashion girl. She’s pretty but every time I see her I also see Kristin Wiig as Shanna. I love her though.

  20. Naddie says:

    We’re two, Amy.

  21. Ginger says:

I’ve seen retro photo shoots with Amy that were far and away better than this set. I too think that she is so pretty and her hair often reminds me of Rita Hayworth. (I have serious hair envy every time I see Amy). I love her acting and I too would not be disappointed even if she stole the award away from Goddess Cate. I can’t even believe I’m saying that but I REALLY liked her role in American Hustle. She was superb among some seriously great actors. As for her working at Hooters? She must have had one hell of a push up bra. I love that idea, no implants…just a really good bra and some cutlets! Work it!
