Charlize Theron brings the drama in black Dior, diamonds: stunning or repetitive?

wenn21143537

I spent way too much time last night trying to figure out what part of Charlize Theron’s Dior gown was nude netting and what part was just being held up by #God. When Charlize first entered the red carpet, I thought her dress was all DRAMA. But I have to admit, in the cold, hard light of day… the drama was live, in motion. In still photos, the Dior looks kind of flat. I was also disappointed that Charlize didn’t bring Sean Penn as her date! But that’s another story.

Back to the dress and the styling… live on the red carpet, I really liked the dress and I thought, “Well, Charlize knocked it out of the park again, like always.” But look at the detailing on this dress… while the top part is stunning and beautifully tailored, I don’t care for the skirt at all. Those tiered panels on the mermaid skirt? It’s been done a million times and I’ve always disliked it. But! Charlize’s necklace did make up for it. Charlize was decked out in $15 million worth of Harry Winston diamonds, including that absolutely stunning necklace.

wenn21143536

And because Charlize presented with him (and he put me to sleep), here’s Chris Hemsworth and his ready-to-pop wife Elsa Pataky. I didn’t even see them on the pre-shows, so this is my first glance at Elsa. I do feel for her. I mean, she’s beyond thrilled to be on the red carpet and she’s bathing in all of the attention, but I bet she was uncomfortable too. Elsa wore Elie Saab, just like Angelina Jolie. I would have loved to have seen this color on Angelina, but it works on Elsa. I mean, what do you want me to say? Elsa looked nice. It wasn’t a bold, avant-garde maternity choice but I don’t expect that from her. They make an attractive couple. Okay, I’ll give it to you Hemsworth-loonies… he looks sort of over it. But I doubt he actually is.

I didn’t like Charlize’s dress. And Elsa’s was probably the worst dress of all the women. Wow it was bad.

    • Suzen says:

Elsa’s dress, meh, two words… ‘side boob’. Not cute on a preggo. Looks very unflattering, like her belly is pulling it off of her.

      • Tanguerita says:

agree. Elsa has been “insisting” on wearing alll these weird belts that emphasized her bump, so her Oscar-dress is like the only logical solution she could have come up with. Come on, lady, we know you are pregnant, no need to shove your belly into our faces. it’s quite an unfortunate look on her. Look at Wilde – that’s how it’s done.

      • Splinter says:

She somehow manages to make her perfectly normal pregnant belly look like some kind of horrible distortion.

      • Decloo says:

I actually love this dress but it would be better on a not pregnant woman. Elsa looks like age could fall over at any minute.

      • bec says:

I can’t make up my mind as to whether Elsa looks like a little kid pretending to be pregnant who shoves a pillow in their shirt, or a grandpa with a serious beer gut

      • Kosmos says:

Totally agree, side boob on a prego woman looks unflattering…….I’m not sure how comfortable she could possibly be. Wouldn’t it also be difficult getting to a seat? I’m sure she wanted to join her husband, so she handled it.

      • rya says:

        Yeah, Elsa Pataky’s dress’s awful!

    • Tapioca says:

Charlize’s dress wasn’t so much bad, as not on the 50-year old it was clearly designed for.

The blue is great with Elsa’s skin tone, but who belts a pregnant woman under the bump, but then creates a hideously unflattering boob slope?!!

      • megandraper says:

Shes wearing belts to help support her tummy. Carrrying twins…not easy on a small frame.

      • Kiddo says:

@megandraper That’s what I think. The weight is practically hunching her over. I think the belt is not a fashion statement.

      • Nerd Alert says:

Yeah my mom had to do that when pregnant with my brothers. She had my dad make her a sling near the end…but they were both 10 lbs so she was bigger than this.

      • Diana says:

I think if the dress would have been tighter under the boob the whole belt under tummy would not have looked bad. It is the boob part that looks atrocious.

      • Splinter says:

She surely does need a belt to support it, but why put the accent on it? She looks like a seahorse.

      • LadySlippers says:

Those tiny belts wouldn’t be supportive. If you google pregnancy supportive belts — you’ll see that they are all HUGE and worn under clothes. These ‘belts’ are strictly decorative.

      • pru says:

I’ve seen ads for such belts right here on CB, and they are gigantic. I really don’t think her belt was for support as much as show.

    • MollyB says:

I love when pregnant women rock their bellies but that not a flattering silhouette on a heavily pregnant woman. She looks like she’s about to topple over.

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

Charlize was one of the worst dressed, IMO. The cut lookes awful, the bottom is awful, too.
Elsa looks like she has one gigantic boob.

    • Stef Leppard says:

Charlize looks too severe. Severe cut to the bodice, severe hair, severe face. She reminded me of Cruella DeVille or something.

Elsa looks ready to give birth on the red carpet… I feel bad dissing on such a hugely pregnant girl. I’ve been there. It’s tough. But… that dress isn’t really cut properly. It’s all stretched out in the boobage area. She loves the belt-under-belly look, but I bet an empire waist would have been a bit more flattering in this case. Poor thing. She looks happy though.

    • Ray says:

Elsa’s was without a doubt my worst look of the night, man if you wanna dress cute when preggers just take a look at Olivia Wilde, she looked lovely

    • MissNostalgia says:

I agree….I am not feeling the Hemsworths. Honestly there were a lot of people profiling who should not have bothered to attend. Elsa will probably be homebound for a while so maybe she made the hubby take her so she could mix and mingle. He does not strike me as being into this sort of thing.

  2. len says:

Don’t want to be negative about a pregnant lady but that dress makes her bump look really weird. Not flattering at all

    • Anna says:

And her b00bs look weirdly saggy and distended. Actually the top kind of melts her her whole chest together into one loopy bubble. She did maternity so much better the 1st time around.

    • emmie_a says:

I’ll be negative. Her dress was weird. She must have had a hand in designing it because It reminds me of her love of wearing belts under her baby bump.

Charlize was probably one of the best dressed but her dress is nothing great. I really wasn’t impressed by the dresses this year.

      • len says:

I can never understand women putting a belt under their babybump. It’s so unflattering. So..90’s somehow.

      • Marty says:

@EMMI_A – She bought her dress off the rack and didn’t get it tailored. Maybe that’s why it looks off?

  3. Ice Maiden says:

Charlize’s dress is great apart from the clearly visible ‘nude’ straps – more the type of thing you’d expect from a chain store than Dior. Elsa’s dress is horrible. I know it’s not easy to wear designer frocks when you’re 7 months pregnant with twins, but it can be done. The lack of support under the breasts, and the belt under the bump (sorry hate that word but can’t think of a better alternative right now!) just makes her look like a watermelon. Not attractive at all.

    • Anna says:

Portman did it. Very Big Catherine Z-J did it. Pataky herself did it 2 years ago. There’s no need for this monstrosity.

    • LadySlippers says:

It didn’t look like a belt to me. I thought it looked like a grandmotherly 2-piece dress where the blouse portion of the dress has elastic on the bottom. (Note: I get I’m probably wrong as she really likes her belts but this really looked like a sparkly grandma dress to me.)

Overall, I thought she looked like a hot mess. BUT she looked radiant and her make-up, hair, and earrings were awesome. It was such a contrast with the rest of her ensemble.

    • Tanguerita says:

Unless one is designing for a figure skater there is no excuse for integrating nude straps into a dress design. Dior really sucks nowadays.

      • Ice Maiden says:

Yup. He may be a deeply unpleasant person, but John Galliano is/was a genius designer. Dior is missing him BADLY and it shows in just about every single gown they produce these days.

      • Kiddo says:

I think it would have been spectacular in simplicity and drama had the straps had some bling, a little diamondish sparkle or something. But it was probably the most figure flattering frock anyway, in spite of how the disappearing straps looked a tad odd from a distance.

      • AG-UK says:

        yes Ice Maiden
He was a genius designer a bit mad but genius. I met him years before when he first started out funny/catty and could drink. He was a visionary I think his clothes for Dior were beautiful, shows were amazing. Now all of the dresses are strapless it’s so much you can do with that sort of style, peplum, sash, or whatever it does get old.

      • L says:

What’s worse is they weren’t even nude straps, but plastic! If they had been black illusion fabric it would have looked so much better.

  4. LaurieH says:

For me, Charlize’s dress was rather “meh”, but what I really didn’t like were the clear strapped. It made the top of the dress look strange. I’d have rather seen thick diamond straps….something that looked more intentional.

    • Ice Maiden says:

That’s what I thought. Either go genuinely strapless, or have proper straps – either black or diamante. The not-so-nude-nude straps just cheapen the whole look.

  5. Toniko says:

And Lainey called this best maternity dress. Just awful.
Doesn’t care for Charlize dress, boring and ill fitted.

  6. BendyWindy says:

I’ve seen other red carpet pictures of Charlize’s dress that made it look MUCH better. I actually didn’t like it when she was presenting because you couldn’t see the details. I think it’s beautiful. I hated Elsa’s dress. Too turquoise, too sequined, and the cut is too LOOK AT ME I’M PREGNANT. Especially considering she’s a pregnant spouse, not a pregnant star. Contrast that with Kerry Washington who looked lovely…and, sorry, Elsa, thanks for playing.

    • Curious Cole says:

      +1
I saw Charlize and immediately thought ‘Now that’s a proper Dior spokeswoman! Jennifer Lawrence take note.’ I also knew Elsa could expect an avalanche of brutal criticism on here for her awful dress choice, she must have had other options.

  7. QQ says:

Charlize almost positively gets my best dressed just cause it is an amazing fit, but it IS a plain year for all the women! (I think Kate hudson who i cant stand Actually might have won this whole thing

Elsa Patacky was sooooo bad that my sister (who isnt into celebs or fashion) texted me as follows: “I mean, of all the things I’ve seen, this one just shook me to my core!”

    • LadySlippers says:

Sandra is my best dressed. I’ve got several who are fighting over second place so I’m still undecided there. Lol

    • yennefer says:

I’m with you QQ. Charlize’s dress was the only one that turned my high-fashion-oscar-drama radar on.

  8. blue marie says:

Elsa’s dress is not a good look however I would allow Hemsworth to park my car. (I had something dirtier but really it’s too early for that)

    Charlize looks beautiful as always.

    • LadySlippers says:

Hey, somewhere in the world it’s NOT early. So ‘fess away!

      😀

    • Tulip Garden says:

Agree that Charlize is just one of those people for whom it is almost impossible to look bad. She is simply a beautiful woman that wears clothes extremely well. While this isn’t my favorite look of hers, she still probably looks better than 75% of the women who are at trying like heck.

      • shaye kay says:

        ^THIS!
Charlize oozes uber confidence and her wardrobe reflects that as does her presentation. I think girlfriend has seen about the worst the world has to offer (the death of her father at the hands of her mother) and she not only survived it but overcome it and THRIVED. Red Carpets don’t scare her and probably nothing much else does either.

  9. chloe says:

I didn’t like the straps of Charlize’s dress and thought the dress was nothing special, I loved her hair and makeup. Esla looks like her baby bump is pulling her forward and she had the worst maternity look of the night.

  10. Sisi says:

Charlize is wearing too much make-up, she doesn’t need it

  11. Audrey says:

I saw Elsa live and she made me so uncomfortable(and not just cause of her I’m the star posing)

Her bump looked even more massive on camera. Like really awkwardly massive

Even famewhores should stay home when their water is set to break at any moment

    • Hiddles forever says:

She couldn’t miss this one, now… how do you dare to suggest that… Lol

Chris seems like someone who has a dead body at his feet… Can he smile in pictures? At least his wife was smiling all the time. Awful dress but she was smiling!

  12. aquarius64 says:

Love Charlize’s dress; it had movie star written all over it. Love the cut and the skirt. The jewels were fabulous.

Elsa’s dress screamed D-list actress; it looked off the rack and tacky despite being Elie Saab. I’ve seen better maternity fashions on the red carpet.

    • Marty says:

It was off the rack, maybe that was the problem. And I’m sorry, I just can’t with all the side boob.

  13. PunkyMomma says:

My vote for best dressed was Anna Kendrick. A bit edgy but she pulled it off perfectly. Thumbs down in Charlize’s Dior – the nude straps ruined the dress. I can’t remember such bland and boring clothes at an Academy Awards ever. It was either Mother of the Bride or knock off prom dresses. Jennifer Lawrence must have that same Dior strapless gown in every color in her closet. Boring. Boring. Boring.

  14. Micah says:

YUCK. That dress is terrible. The “invisible” straps cut off at the neckline in such a bad angle, that it makes the “visible” black neckline look odd. Over all it’s boring.

  15. Lucy2 says:

I liked Charlize’s except for the strap. Elsa’s was horrible- The color was pretty but the shape was just terrible, and too revealing on the sides in some other photos I saw.

  16. Celia says:

Does anyone else think Elsa is expecting twins? She looks really really pregnant in that photo and although Elsa has fame-seeking personality, I would think she wouldn’t want to attend a long ceremony just few days before she’s about to give birth (what she looks like if she’s not expecting twins but a one child only).

I normally despite bump watches but it’s pretty hard to ignore in that dress which seems to have been made to really show it off to everyone.

  17. Marigold says:

Elsa should have studied previous pregnant Oscar attendees. This look is just so unflattering. I generally find pregnant stomachs sort of cute but this makes her look less pregnant, more too many Budweisers over the course of 40 years. Seriously, embrace an empire cut, lady.

  18. Meh–on Charlize. She looked nice, but it was a simple look, not ‘look at me!’. The necklace looks really pretty.

Elsa–God. She’s POSING for those cameras. I caught part of the red carpet online–and omg. She’s waving/posing to the cameras and Chris, like she’s the frigging star of the group. Like she’s put out good films, gotten good reviews for her work. NOT. Whatever. I rate her below the boring romcom girls, because they’ve at least done SOMETHING. This chick was that annoying cop in Fast and Furious, and now she’s Hemsworth’s wife. That’s it. If I didn’t have a really good memory for faces, then I wouldn’t know who the f-ck she is, other than she’s dude’s wife.

  19. Godwina says:

Elsa’s dress brings to mind some kind of horror-fantasy alien egg-sack special effect. Love the colour, hate the design. Every inch of it.

  20. Nya says:

Charlize looks nice but the situation with Sean Penn has just ruined her for me completely.

Elsa looks horrible. The way that dress cuts off under her stomach is hideous. Like she’s trying to shoplift a giant pumpkin.

  21. Serene says:

Elsa’s dress is awful. It’s like your eyes are drawn to her belly, belly and BELLY! It’s a downright bad look. Simply terrible.

Nice things: Love the hair and makeup plus she really has a nice smile.

  22. lady mary. says:

Chemboy looks sad and unenthusiastic ,whats up with him , he had a great year , crack up a smile Thor,As for Elsa pataky got me worried ,thats all

  23. Sarah says:

I thought Charlize was gorgeous. Her dress fit perfectly and her styling was spot on. Honestly though, the woman could wear a burlap sack and look sexy as hell. I won’t even get into poor Elsa. I did like Chris Hemsworth’s look, however, because he went with that burgundy. I like it when a man ditches the straight black tux. Maybe Hiddles has given him some fashion tips.

  24. Marty says:

I love the color of Remora’s dress, HATE the design. And I have a question. When you are that far along in your pregnancy, does it hurt not to have your boobs supported like that? Or does it not matter? I just thought with how big they are now, and the fact that she’s wearing heels, her back must have been killing her!

Chris looked like the hottest bell boy around. He can service me anytime!

I think he’s just over it in general. Two babies coming, a new movie. Or is it that he wife is pimiping out their life on Twitter and her own blog now? Hmmm….

    • j.eyre says:

      1) Boobs – yes. They hurt from the minute you get pregnant until you die. One of the myriad reasons I could not spend any time looking at her was my boobs were having sympathy pains for hers.

      2) CHemboy should have borrowed a sense of humor from TommyAnna last night, not his pants.

      • Marty says:

What I tell you Miss J, #grumpydumbbunny. Although if anyone could make this guy smile it’s the Dragonfly.

Although Chris gets MAJOR points for not belly cupping last night. I actually can’t believe he didn’t, but Remora was there to pick up the slack so problem solved.

    • Hiddles forever says:

His life on twitter and her own blog? I thought they were not on twitter at all….

      • Marty says:

Chris is not a fan of social media, at all. She’s already posted pictures from their baby shower and pics from last night. He’s not in any of the pics, but India is. I’m sure it makes him uncomfortable.

  25. Meme says:

Hate nude straps on dresses and Charlize had on her bitch face all night

  26. FingerBinger says:

Charlize looked gorgeous. There was nothing wrong with the dress. She looked great. I think most of you who that have a problem with the dress just need to find fault with this woman. Elsa should have stayed home.

    • OriginallyBlue says:

      Agree with all of this.

    • Candy Love says:

I disagree just because YOU like the dress doesn’t mean very one has to, It doesn’t mean their hates/have a problem with her. Is it really so hard to believe they just don’t like the dress.

  27. OriginallyBlue says:

Elsa looks absolutely ridiculous. I know there were cameras around so she just HAD to come, but geez. I had a single birth and by 6-7 months I was just ready to hibernate and have it be over. I don’t know why she’s still at it. Is the pull of the camera that seductive?

  28. lisa2 says:

She is so elegant.. but her facial expression was very harsh

I saw another pic of her in a jumpsuit with Sean.

  29. Ice Queen says:

Elsa was horribly dressed. Sharlize was just blah…

  30. Melissa says:

I didn’t like Charlize’s dress. I thought the top looked like a bra, when you try to tuck the straps in and make a strapped bra, strapless..if that makes sense!

  31. Mandy says:

My God, someone please get a chair for poor Elsa to sit in. I would be miserable walking around like that!

  32. shellybean says:

I hate Charlize’s dress. Hate it.

  33. Maggie says:

Charlize won the night. So beautiful. For me no one even came close!

  34. KateBush says:

The silhouette of the maternity dress is the worst I have ever seen. It is SO unflattering I’m sorry but it makes me wince!! The only nice thing I can say is that The colour is lovely and I agree would have liked to have seen Angelina in this colour.

  35. Jh says:

Elsa’s dress is horrendous. Ugh, it’s so unflattering. Charlize would have looked more beautiful if she didn’t look so pissed off and over everything. If you don’t want to be somewhere- then don’t go!!!

  36. Camille (The Original) says:

I didn’t like Charlize’s dress at all and her face looks weird, kind of pinched or something. She seems to have lost her prettiness since she hooked up with Baked-Ham-Face. Honestly she gives off such ‘bitchy’ vibes to me as well. Love that necklace though!

  37. willowtree1921 says:

i really don’t understand the hate on elsa….she seems like a beautiful and nice woman who just happens to have dated famous men…but what woman/man in hollywood hasen’t? It seems only natural to me that she’d be out supporting her husband. and far from looking over it, he seems more concerned that his petite little wife is going to topple over any second from that massive belly! That can’t be easy for a woman that small to carry…just look at her arms and her hips…that weight IS ALL IN HER BELLY. hence the belts…my mom wore them, too. she’s no kim k sex tape, fake marriage whore……

    • FingerBinger says:

Many people think she’s a fame whore. She’s dated a few famous guys before marrying Thor and seems to be a bit of a camera hog. I don’t like or dislike her,but she really should have stayed home or at least picked a better dress.

    • aquarius64 says:

There are many not so good stories about Elsa….that she was up-tradey in her dating life until she bagged Hemsworth; that she has the paps on speed dial; and that she sells her stories and pics about life with Chris to the Spanish gossip mags (Hola! in particular) WITHOUT pics of the husband. I read on this thread that she is putting her baby shower and Oscar pics on social media without him. Elsa did the same thing about their wedding pics. Old habits die hard.

    • My2Pence says:

re. pregnancy belts. If you read up-thread you’ll see the discussion. A pregnancy support belt is worn underneath clothing, is elastic and quite wide to help support the weight. She could have worn one of these true support belts underneath her dress. Having this oddly-shaped dress, with a poorly-placed seam (clearly it isn’t strong-enough or intended to be a support belt, it is just a seam) is merely an unflattering choice.

  38. lucy says:

    Charlize did not bring it.

And, that gown on the pregnant lady looks absurd from the side with the belt underneath the torso!

  39. Grant says:

Charlize looks absolutely beautiful in black. She had a supremely bitchy look on her face all night though.

  40. itsetsyou says:

Elsa’s dress: it’s the deep cut around her arms that makes it look bad as if her belly is about to pull it off of her. And you CAN dress beautifully when you are pregnant. Just remember SJP and her fantastic white dress with black sash – classy, beautiful and stylish.

  41. Sarah says:

I think Charlize dressed down a bit because she wasn’t nominated and wasn’t trying to steal the show. Trying to figure out did Sean Penn accompany her or did he avoid the whole Oscar scene?

  42. Deedee says:

If i were Elsa, i would have stayed home.

  43. Anna Scott says:

Charlize is an impossibly beautiful woman and these pics here don’t do her justice. She always looks amazing and out of this world gorgeous

  44. Abby says:

Elsa honey… That look is not good. I love the color, but the shape is NOT flattering for a maternity dress. Is this Kim Kardashian Couch Dress bad?

  45. tredd says:

I bet Charlize wants to drown herself every time she looks in the mirror. That HORRIBLE haircut!
    U G H !
There’s no growing that fug chit out gratefully.
    No way.
    No how.

  46. aquarius64 says:

@Marty – I think the reason Elsa poses and preens on the red carpets because NOBODY from a major entertainment outlet interviews her at these events. They only interview Chris; and he doesn’t include her in the conversation. I think it pricks Elsa’s pride that outside of Spain she’s a nobody, especially in Hollywood. It must also hurt that other major stars include their lesser-known wives and family members in red carpet close ups, like Matthew McConnaughy had his wife AND his mom included in red carpet interviews. I think it’s the motivation for feeding the Spanish gossip mags and the Twitter page.

  47. ViktoryGin says:

    Tacky Pataky strikes again.

Poor thing hitched her cart to Hemsworth hoping to be the next Penelope Cruz and it DIDN’T work.

She’s got to get attention where she can because it’s certainly not due her prodigious talents as an actress :/

  48. Vee says:

Yikes, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I feel sorry for Elsa for all the flak and everyone coming down on her so hard for her dress as it can’t be easy to be pregnant with twins. However, she should have taken a page from Angelina Jolie years ago when she was pregnant with her twins. Angelina looked awesome. To me Elsa looks very tired, and she has to be. To me, the gown would have been better if it had been designed to uplift the boobs, not flatten them like pancakes, with a high waist that flowed over her quite large bump. That trying to extenuate with tight clothes is not working for her. (I sure hope she’s not planning some nude, Demi Moore type pregnancy pictures on any magazine. Demi pulled it off, it would not be flattering for Elsa.)
