Kristen Bell in white Roberto Cavalli at the Oscars: staid or striking?

86th Annual Oscars Arrivals

When Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard invented that #pedorazzi hashtag and began speaking out against the paparazzi, I started to question my opinion of them. Maybe that’s not fair, maybe they should be lauded for speaking out against a system that harms children, even if their colleagues often benefit from it. Someone had to be the first, and they are asking the tabloids and consumers to think about how paparazzi harass and bother children, who have no say in the matter. Still, there’s something “off” about it for me, like a kind of smugness that doesn’t take into account the way their industry works, or the way the media and public support it. Maybe I just don’t want to see the status quo changed.

That’s what came to mind when I saw Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard at the Oscars last night. They’re no longer the quirky couple who eloped at a courthouse and posted twitpics of their dogs, they’re the couple who crusades against the paparazzi.

Kristen was in this white Roberto Cavalli beaded tulle fishtail gown which looks like something Sofia Vergara would wear. There were a lot of pale and white gowns last night, and I found it mostly underwhelming. Imagine this dress in a solid bright color and how much prettier it would be. She’s wearing Piaget diamonds.

Kristen hosted the scientific and technical awards, along with Michael B Jordan. Despite the fact that the Oscars clocked in at three and a half hours there were even more awards that we didn’t have to sit through. Think of how much more tolerable the Oscars would be if they would move most of the secondary awards to that technical awards ceremony, or to yet another ceremony. They need to shave at least an hour and a half from the broadcast, it was a bloated mess as usual.

Kristen tried to mix it up at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in this deep v-neck red Grecian gown. I don’t have a designer ID on this yet, but like her Oscars gown it’s a very popular cut and color. I’m not fond of the way it smooshes her boobs together.

Also in a pale beaded dress we have Sarah Paulson in champagne colored Elie Saab. This gown is quite pretty but it doesn’t have any kind of wow factor. It’s just a very elegant dress. Paulson was there to support her film 12 Years a Slave, which of course won best picture. She told Ryan Seacrest that she had just met Cate Blanchett that night on the red carpet, and that they are scheduled to start a movie together in one week.

In contrast here’s Viola Davis in green Escada. Viola said she chose the dress because “it fit” and green is her “go-to color.” I wish more ladies would have chosen bold colors on the red carpet last night. We had a lot of pale colors, very dark dresses, and metallics, but not many jewel tones. I guess that’s out of vogue this season, and it’s also what makes Davis stand out. I love her wavy hair! She should have worn just one bracelet, though, those two matching bracelets make her look like Wonder Woman.

I usually love Viola’s red carpet looks, but this one didn’t really do it for me. :-/

  2. Lucy2 says:

Kristen’s gown is pretty- not sure about the party dress. Viola looks lovely but I agree about the bracelets. Sarah looks pretty.

    • Crank says:

I love Kristen’s dresses! As a side note: even though I LOVED Frozen, I thought some of the pacing was off and some of the songs were meh (especially the trolls). I really hoped The Wind Rises would have won…such a good movie. And I still don’t understand how Monsters didn’t get nominated, but the croods did? Nope nope nope.

    • Rachel says:

I don’t think the pictures do Kristen’s gown justice. She looked gorgeous.

And I didn’t like Viola’s dress on the red carpet, but when she walked across the stage, she was striking. Stunning.

  3. Denver Danni says:

I love Kristen Bell and can’t wait for the VM movie. She also had a burrito in her clutch, which was hilarious. I have stopped reading celebrity baby sites. It’s definitely given me pause and now I have changed my feelings.

  4. SonjaMarmeladova says:

Kristen looked awful. Awful. And my opinion has changed. Paparazzi shouldn’t bother children, but that’s on Jessica Alba and Garner and other mom’s who have a career because they have children and use them to stay in the spotlight.

Sarah looked amazing. Yes, it was a safe dress, but it looked perfect on her.
I hate Viola’s dress, but she’s such a beautiful woman.

    • Merritt says:

Paparazzi were harassing celebrity children long before either Alba or Garner became mothers. I question how much Garner was actually calling the paps, considering she spoke in favor of a law regarding the paps and kids.

    • MollyB says:

Something about her styling–her hair?–made her look like she was going to prom. She looks out of her league at the Oscars.

    • katy says:

My big issue was calling the paps “pedorazzi.” The paps (as far as I know) don’t molest or rape celeb kids, and it hurts to see that they compare someone taking pics of their kids to a child being victimized in one of the most horrific ways imaginable. I personally have lost all respect and interest in them.

      • Chinoiserie says:

Pedo is latin and means child, so pedorazzi means child paparazzi, so an accurate name. Pedophile means child lover since phile means lover, the way bibliophile means book lover.

      • Lemon says:

“ped” means children (i.e. pediatrician). I wouldn’t take pedorazzi to mean pedophile-razzi unless that was explicitly stated.

  5. Patricia says:

I wish Sarah Paulson would do more, not always look so dowdy and boring. She’s totally gorgeous and her figure is perfect. I’ve loved her for years on American horror Story and I just know she could take some risks and pull off some wonderful looks. Instead I’m left yawning.

  6. Dara says:

You know why you get an off feeling about Dax and Kristen being the ones to front the #pedorazzi movement… they just aren’t important or popular enough to complain. If Brad and Angelina started this it would feel right. They are just being a little too pompous considering their actual level of fame. No one cares about photos of their kid.

    • blue marie says:

Thank you, I think this is what annoys me about them. Oh and they are a bit too smug.

      • harpreet says:

Dax attacks everyone on twitter who questions their pedorazzi campaign (for not targeting their peers who stage photo ops).

I hate their holier than though attitude. Dude, you only launched this because you had a kid, stop acting like you are God’s gift to the earth.

      • Kiddo says:

        @blue marie , +1

      • emmie_a says:

        I totally agree.

    • Esti says:

They started this movement after they had their kid and paparazzi were following them trying to get the first picture. They have never, as far as I know, acted like famewhores — you don’t see them outside of the paparazzi hotspots, or getting pap’d getting coffee every day. I really don’t understand why people think they’re doing this for the publicity when they’ve never chased it before.

      • Erinn says:

This. If they had started it before they had kids, they’d been getting shit on for having an opinion that doesn’t affect them.

      • Bridget says:

I don’t know their motives, but it’s their choiceto blame just the photographers and the magazines that gives off the ”holier than thou” attitude that people are complaining about. They’ve completely blown off the very valid point that many of those photos of celebrity children that we’re seeing are staged and with the permission of the parent – to use the tag ”pedorazzi” when someone has legitimately acquired the photos with consent is ridiculous. No one wants to have an honest discussion about how motherhood is practically a career choice once the other opportunities dry up (I’m looking at you, Jessica Alba) or how the Happy Family image goes into marketing a movie or a person. Instead, they’ve overly simplified the argument.

    • lenje says:

Right. Just because they’re not “that” famous, they don’t have the right to campaign for issues they think important.

    • TG says:

Yes, me too. I mean are there even any paps chasing after them? I get the feeling they are protesting the fact that they aren’t getting any attention from the paps. Like they are p*ssed that no one is hiding behind bushes to get pics of them and their precious bundle so rather than let everyone know that they have to fake all this righteous anger on behalf of the true celebs for which it might actually be a problem. I mean who are they anyway? I thought they were a cute couple before they started this paps nonsense now I just laugh at their ploy.

I love the finger waves in Viola’s hair. At least I think that is what they are called.

      • Sarah says:

So you laugh at them because they don’t want kids to be papped? Why?
Does it really matter why they are doing it as long as somebody is doing something. Kids should be off-limits. Celebrities can be considered as fair-game (within limits, IMO) because they chose their life but their kids didn’t. Frankly, it creepy the way some people fawn or worse, criticism celebrity children.
Personally, I think a lot of worthy causes are railroaded by putting the focus of the activist’s motives when that shouldn’t matter.

    • The Original Mia says:

      Preach it!

    • metallicwow says:

Aren’t they also the couple who said they wouldn’t marry until gay marriage was legal? That was another case of them thinking of themselves as far more significant than they are to make such a grand statement.

  7. kelley says:

I feel like I need to catch up — why was Kristen Bell at the Oscars? She seems a few notches down on the totem pole and there’s no danger of her being nominated or winning — or even starring in an Oscar-worthy movie.

    • She was there for Frozen–she voiced the main character, I think.

    • Scarlet Vixen says:

She voiced the main character in Disney’s “Frozen,” which won 2 Oscars.

Her nursing boobs look amazing. She usually dresses more conservatively-it looks like she’s enjoying having some awesome cleavage. 🙂

      • Reddy says:

YES! I have total breast envy right now, they look SO perfect in that red dress! I want to stare at them, but in a non-creepy way if that is possible 😀

    • kibbles says:

I really don’t know how she has managed to remain in the spotlight for so long. I only remember her from Veronica Mars, a CW show that garnered a loyal fan base. She seems more famous for her anti-paparazzi campaign and some of her appearances on the Ellen show more than any recent film work she has done (besides Frozen).

      • Sarah says:

Veronica Mars – the movie is coming out this March, 14th, I think and it looks really good. All the old characters are back. Being a fan, I am really looking forward to it.

      • charlie says:

Totally agree. I also think her presence at the Oscars seemed a bit off. She’s a C-lister at best and hasn’t had a lot of quality, critically acclaimed work on her CV. Oh yeah, it’s all about the dress. Right.

  8. foxyw says:

I don’t like Viola’s dress overall, but she’s right – it’s a beautiful color for her. As for Kristen Bell, the first dress is kind of typical. Pretty, but that’s it. Nothing special. Her red dress is much better, although the little beige slit detail in the front isn’t working for me. If that part were also red, it would be an awesome dress. And I don’t know who Sarah Paulson is, but that champagne color washes her out. Actually, it washes out most people. You need a specific skin tone to be able to pull that off, but I’m not really sure what that skin tone is.

  9. I like Sarah Paulson’s look–if she hadn’t dyed her hair dark then it would’ve looked terrible on her.

  10. Kiddo says:

Please make it stop with these two; (not going to even mention the names, you know who I mean).

The Academy Awards ceremony, in my opinion, is directed to please the recipients and nominees. Which, okay, it’s their day and all, but then why bother televising it, if you have no interest in providing entertainment for the plebes? It’s a TTT: totally tedious telecast. It seems to have become even more mind numbingly boring in the last several years. (Okay now I sound like a Lewis Black impersonator). End Rant.

  11. serena says:

    Love Viola’s and Kristen’s dresses!

  12. Margo says:

Would have gone, should have gone! No disrespect but, but please learn proper grammar!

    • Jewel says:

Yes! I’ve been reading comments all over the internet, and am disheartened by the use of “should of” and “would of”.

  13. Marty says:

Am I the only one who finds it kind of suspect that this “movement” Kristen and Dax are doing is coming close to the realease of the Veronica Mars movie?

  14. kibbles says:

I find Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard to be a very annoying C-list couple. At first, I wondered why someone like Kristen was even at the Oscars then remembered that she was the voice of one of the characters in the movie Frozen. Seriously, neither of these two will ever be up for an Oscar. If for some reason, Kristen manages to get a really good film and is nominated, she won’t win. She’s not a good actress. I also find their crusade against the paparazzi very annoying. No one cares about these two and their child. They aren’t Brangelina or even Affleck and Garner. The paparazzi are not hounding Kristen and Dax down for photographs. Please.

    • Merritt says:

Except the paps did hound them, which prompted the campaign. And it shouldn’t matter who starts a campaign against paps hounding kids, it is long past time for something to happen.

  15. Marigold says:

Kristen Bell, do your hair! That’s how I wear mine hanging out with a toddler all day.

  16. Bridget says:

That white dress was bad. It looked like one of the more expensive selections at David’s Bridal. And I agree on the ”pedorazzi” crusade. Somehow the way Kristin and Dax have come off is so smug (and out of touch) it makes me want to side with the tabloids!

  17. Grant says:

Kristen looked lovely in the red. That’s a great color for her.

  18. Sara says:

I think Kristen Bell is so pretty!

  19. Janet says:

I liked Bell’s red dress. The white one didn’t do it for me.

Love the color of Davis’s dress but the style was off. It didn’t do anything for her.

Paulson was just meh from nose to toes.

  20. mar says:

    I loved Viola last night.

    I hate Kristens look.

  21. shellybean says:

Kristen looks pretty, but it’s way too princessy for her personality. I don’t think it suits her.

She is kind of annoying about the pedorazzi thing. It’s not like she’s some huge pap magnet anyway. I don’t see people just dying to see pics of her kid. She’s not Angelina.

  22. Camille (The Original) says:

I’m sorry but I hated Kristen Bells Oscar look. I hated her hair and I didn’t care for her dress either. The red after party dress is much, much better. Still hate her hair.

  23. Abby says:

I like Kristen’s red dress vs. Kim Kardashian’s red dress.

  24. kimbers says:

Dont read physical mags, nor do I even look at pics of celeb moms bc I dont care about children of famous people….or famous ppl with their kids…boring….but good for them for their determination on getting photos to btfu. I like them and have seen them film interviews and they were always really kick back.
