Us Weekly: Scarlett Johansson is 4 months along, the pregnancy was a ‘surprise’

wenn21137648

This doesn’t seem like much, but I thought you’d be interested in a few pieces of news about Scarlett Johansson’s pregnancy, or as my mother called it, “Your move, Blake Lively.” Scarlett’s pregnancy was confirmed a week ago, and E! News was the first to report it. E! claimed that Scarlett might be about five months along, which I didn’t believe. Now Us Weekly is saying that Scarlett is four months along (eh, I’ll buy it… for now) and oh by the way, this pregnancy was a “surprise”. Ya think? No judgment or anything, things happen and sometimes pregnancies just happen and they’re a surprise and it’s all good. Here’s more:

ScarJo’s surprise! Pregnant Scarlett Johansson has had a whirlwind couple of months, adding both “fiancee” and “mother-to-be” to her resume. But an insider tells Us Weekly that the Her actress has actually known about her pregnancy for quite some time now.

“She’s about four months along,” a source tells Us of Johansson. “The baby was a welcome surprise!”

The 29-year-old actress and her French journalist beau Romain Dauriac, 32, began dating in November 2012, and confirmed their engagement last September. On March 3, Us confirmed the couple are expecting their first child.

“She’s just excited to share the news!” a pal adds.

Johansson will continue to shoot in Avengers: Age of Ultron — reprising her role as Black Widow — but not without a few changes to accommodate her surprise pregnancy. “They’re tweaking filming,” the insider adds.

[From Us Weekly]

Yes, I bet Marvel is in full “Tweak Mode”. As I said last week, I bet all of the CGI nerds in all the land are preparing to go Full Tweak to fix Scarlett’s bump area in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. And that’s why I think the “surprise” part is right – Scarlett wouldn’t have been trying to get pregnant if she knew she had to film some intensive action sequences in the coming months. So, a surprise baby it is. Let’s hope Marvel doesn’t recast her.

Scarlett also has a new interview with The Telegraph, which you can read here. A lot of it is just the same old stuff – she doesn’t mention her pregnancy at all, which makes me wonder if this interview was conducted a few weeks before it was published. She does talk about the SodaStream controversy, and she’s still defending her work with them despite the fact that they have a factory in the West Bank:

‘I’m not an expert on the history of this conflict, and I’ve never professed to be. But it is a company that I believe in, that I think has the ability to make a huge difference, environmentally. [SodaStream’s CEO] Daniel Birnbaum has said many times that this factory is one he inherited, and that he doesn’t want to fire people – the majority of those people being Palestinian.’

[From The Telegraph]

She was also asked about working with the sausage party at Marvel and what it’s like to be the only woman in the group of Avengers, and she scoffed at the idea that those dudes are hyper-masculine, saying: “You’re also talking about a bunch of actors, so they’re not particularly masculine. They are in public of course, but really actors are sensitive, neurotic, self-doubt-filled and needy. Men and women alike, we’re all big babies!” I think she was talking about Chris Evans. That sounds like Chris. Speaking of, there’s a new clip for Captain America: The Winter Soldier with lots of ScarJo.

  1. Isa says:

He looks like he would be her stylist.

  2. Rhea says:

I was surprised with her pregnancy, that’s for sure. Thought Blake would be the first one to get pregnant with the Domestic Goddess image that she’s trying to project.

    • mercy says:

I guess Blake isn’t trying hard enough to fit the stereotype. 😉 I know lots of people, men and women, who love the whole domestic scene (cooking, decorating…) but have no children.

  3. Karen says:

Haha I love her quote on actors. I’d imagine that to be so true. I’m always a fan of her in interviews.

    • V4Real says:

“You’re also talking about a bunch of actors, so they’re not particularly masculine. They are in public of course, but really actors are sensitive, neurotic, self-doubt-filled and needy.”

OMG it sounds like she is describing Chris Evans because he is all those things.

    • Laine says:

A surprise? If you’re having hot monkey sex on a regular basis and are careless with birth control, then don’t be too “surprised” if you become pregnant.

I don’t know what he’s like but if he’s not strong and is a milquetoast (a person who is timid or submissive), then he’s finished. You would have to be strong to stand up to her.

      • Call Me Al says:

Thank you! No birth control = baby. No surprises there! I hate it when people say that. Plus, it’s gross.

      • The Wizz says:

I got pregnant whilst on birth control. A bit of education on the matter wouldn’t go astray.

      • MB says:

I agree with The Wizz. I did as well. Birth control is not entirely effective and many things can impact on their effectiveness in individual cases such as other medications, illness, alcohol.

  4. Jessica says:

I bet Marvel is pissed right now. If she’s 4 months, then they will have to film her scenes right now or else it won’t work. I bet it will cost a fortune to CG her entire body in the film if she’s showing when they film it. Or they will just cut her part to the bare minimum.

  5. Lark says:

Yeah, I figured it was a surprise considering The Avengers just started filming. No way did she plan the baby. She’s engaged, has a lot of money, and is in her late 20s so I bet it is a happy surprise. There’s no way they will re-cast her unless she wants to be re-cast….she has a contract with Marvel for x amount of films and I think it may even be illegal to try and fire and re-cast an actress because she got pregnant.

  6. Mia4S says:

A healthy baby is the most important thing of course. However since that has nothing to do with me I will say that on the movie side it sucks if her part is cut down. I mean, Marvel is not exactly swimming in female superheroes are they? Well at least they’ve cast one other woman who hopefully won’t suck.

I’m kind of over Evans and that new GQ interview where he says his heart is just not in making these movies anymore, didn’t help. Dude, shut up and put your blue spandex on or ask to be killed off. Whining is unbecoming.

    • Seán says:

Elizabeth Olsen joined the cast with this new Avengers movie, playing Scarlett Witch. Apparently Joss Whedon wants to play up her and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s role as Quicksilver in the sequel so she should be a prominent female in the next movie.

    • SK says:

Yeah except he is not the first actor to deal with Marvel and come out feeling like this. Chris Hemsworth isn’t exactly enamoured of them either. From all accounts they are hideous to deal with and incredibly stingy but they milk everything they can out of sir actors. Yes they gave them their big breaks but I can imagine it would wear you down after your first few flicks with them. A bad work culture is a bad work culture. No one should have to put up with it.

  7. John says:

Educated, wealthy, first-world woman doesn’t realize that having sex without protection results in a “surprise” pregnancy?
Yeah, right. I’m sure the condom broke, or her birth control stopped working.
    *eyeroll*

    • booboobird says:

Right you are. If she had a impenetrable birth control and it still somehow happened, I’d call it a surprise. Otherwise it’s just a question of time. Or maybe previous guys’ baby making fluid wasn’t potent enough and she wasn’t very concerned about getting pregnant. Then a Frenchman came along 🙂

      • Jaderu says:

Ahhhhhhhhh “baby making fluid” actually sounds worse than the slang words for it. ewwwww LOL

    • Lindy79 says:

      I doubt she planned it.
I agree with the above, GoodNames.

Marvel will deal with it, they’ll be pissed and may or may not reduce her role but she wont get replaced. Fact is, she is pregnant so costume fittings aside, I would hazard a guess insurance now won’t allow her to do much, nor would she want to put herself or her child at risk.

Lainey comparing it to RDJ and Hemsworths partners being pregnant not affecting them pissed me off no end. Its not the same at all and was a ridiculous point in an attempt to support her view that this studio were trying to shame a young girl getting pregnant and ruining their movie.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        @ Lindy79
I think you’re referring to my post that said failing to plan is the same as planning? It’s gone. Was that offensive?

      • Lindy79 says:

Yeah was weird, I replied specifically to yours then mine appeared as a new post??

EDIT: It just happened again so I think there’s either something wrong with my settings or the site settings.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

No, Lindy, it’s happening to me, too. Lol twilight zone

      • Tulip Garden says:

        @ Goodnames,
I saw your post. I don’t know why someone would find it offensive. Isn’t it what we try to teach the young ‘uns? Why should adult be immune to the same good advice?
BTW, tried to post as a reply but I ended up here.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Thanks, Tulip Garden. I certainly didn’t mean it to be offensive.

      • The Original Mia says:

Lainey is an idiot. There is no comparison between an actor whose wife is pregnant and an actress who is pregnant. No comparison whatsoever.

      • Lindy79 says:

It annoyed me SO much. Like she had created this drama in her own head but then used a completely ridiculous and frankly irrelevant argument to back it up.
Obv Marvel are going to be pissed, they hired her for a certain length of time to do a job and she got pregnant which means a lot of stuff has to be moved around, schedules have to be re-done (and not just for the actors, for the crew too…) which will have a ripple effect on stuff they may have had lined up based on their initial schedule..we all know that people who work on movies don’t have a regular pay check so they need to have a stream of things lined up. I’m sure it happens a lot, people get sick/injured/have emergencies etc. but even if they are fuming with her, Marvel aren’t oppressing her by being pissed off, especially since it wasn’t planned.

      • Tulip Garden says:

        @Lindy79 Post #27
I agree with this so much! Thanks for posting.

      • lrm says:

My experience is that Lainey does that A LOT: Use irrelevant or not logical arguments to back up her favorite talking points-ie, women and the way hollywood is with women, race/racism , how lame the mini van majority is, etc. She often uses irrelevant points to back up her assertions and she finds a way to fit these topics into any discussion. I think it’s called ‘baiting’-I’m sure getting people ruffled and speaking about controversial subjects in a PC way, fighting for the under dog, brings fans, as well. I think she’s smart, but her lack of solid backing when writing about these has turned me off and she comes off as pseudo inteletectual and knee jerk, A LOT! I’ve stopped reading her actually and am the better for it, tbh. Plus, when she’s not baiting with reactionary comments, she writes like a high schooler in terms of her mindset and i’ts cringeworthy to read. She’s my age! Just. stop.

      • mercy says:

        @Irm,
+1, though I guess it was Sarah this time. Same difference.

      • Bridget says:

Did no one even notice that Lainey didn’t even write that – it was Sarah from Cinesnark?

      • mercy says:

Ok, the replies aren’t working. Goodnight!

    • Tulip Garden says:

I guess I’m not the only snark to roll my eyes at a “surprise” pregnancy from a grown woman! The only way it could be a “surprise” is if your birth control failed. While I guess that happens, I betcha 99% of the time it failed because you didn’t use it…and if that “surprises” you then I just shake my head.

      • Lucky Charm says:

Ummm, NO birth control is 100% guaranteed to prevent pregnancy. Even 99.999% effective means that there is still that one woman who gets pregnant, and I know a couple of them. Correctly using birth control can still result in a pregnancy, which is why it’s called a “surprise”.

    • Enn says:

I have very good friends who were married for several years and were happily childfree, until an “oops” happened and now they are a very happy family of three. It actually DOES happen.

      • Tulip Garden says:

Yes, I realize it does. Also, I think that it is less of a big deal if the two partners are married. It’s not like they have to completely shift the gears of their relationship or their commitment to each other. With single people that are in relatively new relationships, it seems that pregnancy may drastically alter for one partner or both, what they were planning for this relationship if anything. I’m not saying that it isn’t a blessing and I’m not saying that the joy is diminished. I am saying that it makes a lot of decisions for a couple that they may not have considered little less decided upon. I wouldn’t want to be faced with “Well, guess we are in each other’s life forever now.” when maybe you weren’t even sure about next year?
I hope this doesn’t come across mean. I like ScarJo and wish her every happiness and success with the baby and the fiancé.

      • Call Me Al says:

I know, but I think that “surprise” is over used. It mostly means “forgot to take my pill” or “just didn’t feel like using a condom that time”.

    • ughinsomnia says:

I had a surprise baby as an educated adult, on birth control taken every single day as directed. It DOES happen.

      • JoAnn says:

        Me too! Surprise twins here.

      • Belle says:

I have a friend who got pregnant while on the pill as well… no missed pills, antibiotics, or anything else that might interfere with the pill. After years of taking it, and yes… having sex, it was perfectly effective for her… until one day, it wasn’t… LOL It DOES happen and people can roll their eyes all they want, it doesn’t change the fact that it happens.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I see your point, but sometimes accidents happen. One of my aunts got an IUD put in after she had her third kid (years later, I mean)—-and it failed about three months later. The doctor who put it in, has been doing that for over 20 years, and she told my aunt that my aunt’s the third person that it’s failed for in her entire career.

      • jjva says:

yup. My good friend’s doctor told her that because of her PCOS she’d never get pregnant. Her son is 3.

  8. Charlotte says:

My man is an actor and works in a theatre and her quote is….accurate.

  9. Ana says:

Kaiser your mom sounds hilarious and I would love to see her as a guest writer for Celebitchy!

  10. Calcifer says:

I have a strong feeling that Amber Heard would happily help out here… No problem at all… .

    • Calcifer says:

In fact, I suspect that Johnny Depp is already making phone calls on behalf of his ‘Rising Texas Star’… And, an afterthought, unlike Scarlett, Amber would probably never let a baby get in the way of her burning ambition to succeed.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Sad thing is, a baby would help her ‘arrive’—if it’s with Johnny. I’m torn, because on one hand, I don’t think that this is a surprise at all, on Johnny’s end. He’s always dated younger women, and been through many relationships. One *could* argue that they stuck it out a lot longer for the kids–him and Vanessa. On the other hand, couldn’t he have picked a talented person to get along with? Because Amber, while beautiful, only excels at playing the hot girlfriend, and THAT was only with Johnny. Other than that, she’s a shitty actress.

  11. Littles says:

2nd photo, the no-socks-with-dress shoes thing… That is REALLY bothering me for some reason. That’s all I got.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

We must have been posting at the same time. Yeah, that REALLY bothers me, too.

    • Frida_K says:

That, and she’s beaming at him while he manfully and with great self-importance fiddles with his cell phone.

      • Meegs says:

Frida_K – you totally nailed the description of the vibe I am getting as well

      • mercy says:

Yeah, but look at the first pic. He’s with the program now. He just needs to practise making it look more natural. 😀

    • Size Does Matter says:

I was wondering. Do French guys not wear socks?

      • Meinu says:

Actually they do. The current hipster trend in Paris is guys wearing flashy-coloured socks and too short trousers. Even at work. It hurts my eyes every day…

    • MB says:

Yes! Instant Lady Boner Killer for me. Gross.

  12. Amanda_M87 says:

Celebrities sure seem to have a lot of “surprise” pregnancies don’t they…

    • Kim1 says:

      So do non celebrities

      • LadySlippers says:

I was just going to write that too. Surprises happen to the most prepared as well.

      • lunchcoma says:

Absolutely, and not all of those surprises happen to teenagers. I know so many married, well-educated women whose first children came a little sooner than planned or who ended up adding a third child to a family that they’d thought was finished at two. Scarlett is hardly the first woman to have a surprise pregnancy.

    • Lucky Charm says:

Only because they are reported in the news. We don’t hear about the thousands that happen everyday to ordinary non-celeb people. 🙂

  13. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I come from a preppy sort of area, and I’m used to men going without socks. But not when they’re in black tie. What is he doing?

Other than I can’t stand the way he dresses, and you’re going to have to live with that forever, and since you’re famous there will be tons of pictures, and ugh he dresses badly, congratulations, Scarlett.

  14. Tapioca says:

As my old biology teacher used to say, “If you’re not using contraception correctly you’re trying for a baby!”

My friend recently found out the hard way – he’s (very unwillingly) going to be a dad after his girlfriend came off the pill for mood problems and they didn’t use condoms to cover themselves, d’oh!

    • Lindy79 says:

It will never fail to shock me, the chances people take with contraception choices.
      There are SO many options!!

      • mercy says:

Some options are more reliable than others, though. Most birth control pill surprises seem to be forgetting to take one, or mixing with antibiotics. The other options have a much higher failure rate.

    • Tulip Garden says:

      Posted something similar above!
I would say that great minds think alike but I don’t think using common sense makes us great-minded…or, maybe, it today’s world it does.
Do you want to be Sherlock Holmes ’cause I will take the appellation of Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple? I think we have figured out the case of “How Did I Get A Baby Up In Here?” 🙂

  15. The Original Mia says:

I doubt she waited until now to tell Marvel. They’ve known she was pregnant since the stick read “positive”. Her role may not be as big in this film due to the fact her role is huge in Captain America 2 & the fact they are introducing a host of new characters.

I’m happy for her & wish her a safe & healthy pregnancy.

  16. Sarah says:

“You’re also talking about a bunch of actors, so they’re not particularly masculine. They are in public of course, but really actors are sensitive, neurotic, self-doubt-filled and needy. Men and women alike, we’re all big babies!””

am i the only one who got really offended by that? she is saying that guys who are sensitve and have self doubt arent masculine. it doesnt make it better when includes women in that, quite the contrary.

  17. E says:

She was most definitely talking about her ex-hubby.

    • mercy says:

She’s dated mostly actors, and she’s also an actor. Who’s to say she wasn’t talking about all of the above? Maybe the new guy needs some reassurance that the actors have nothing on him. 😉

  18. Down and Out says:

Why is her being fired even speculated as a possibility? I thought that was illegal in the US, to fire a woman for being pregnant? Not to mention the backlash from the moms of the kids who sees these types of movies. I think no way would she ever be fired, regardless of however inconvenient it is.

  19. Jayna says:

Scarlett, go meet Liam Neeson, a man’s man, masculine. Maybe all the actors your age are that way, sadly. That’s why it took a 56 to now 61-year-old to be carrying most of the action thriller movies on his shoulders for the last five years and pull in the box office, and 48-year-old Robert Downey, Jr., also, to me is very masculine ever since he buffed up for Ironman and got a little older, less pretty. Okay. Robert Downey, Jr., probably is needy and neurotic, but stlll very masculine to me.

  20. Kosmos says:

She’s had lots of men since Ryan, and fairly short lived relationships, then chased Sean Penn and went off with him for a fling. He rebuffed her and the next thing we hear is she’s here in Paris, pregnant, and intends to marry this man. Geez, my initial feeling is definitely much too fast, too soon, and I don’t give this long……

    • The Original Mia says:

We know of 3 guys she dated post-divorce, which happened almost 3 years ago. How is that quick when her ex got married to his alleged mistress within a year of the divorce?

      • mercy says:

They both seemed to move fast. One to marriage, the other to pregnancy. I know of three women Ryan… dated after he filed for divorce and none of them were Blake (she wasn’t with Leo at the time, either.) I’m sure they were friends, but I kind of doubt she was his “mistress.” He had an intense schedule for GL, and Scarlett was with him for part of it. Blake wasn’t there for the entire shoot, she was only filming on weekends for awhile because of her Gossip Girl schedule, and she had her assistant with her, as well as visits from her boyfriend and her sister. That info comes from photos, local news, and a GL crew member.

  21. aquarius64 says:

I wonder if Scarlett has a change in appearance clause in her Marvel contract, i.e., no weight gain or pregnancy because of Black Widow’s catsuit? I wonder because the need to put out this statement that the pregnancy was a surprise makes me think penalties were going to be placed on her if this was planned knowing she would have to start filming soon. Lainey’s false equivalency argument for RDJ and CH becoming dads is ridiculous: THEIR appearances are not going to change because of a pregnancy. I still think Marvel is not happy about Scarlet’s bundle of joy not only for the elevated costs of accommodating a pregnant actress on set, but also on the press’ focus on her impending motherhood – not on the movie.

    • mercy says:

Well guys can’t get pregnant, so… A better analogy would’ve been something like what if an actor in an ensemble cast was involved in an accident that didn’t allow them to work out or do stunts for the better part of a year. How would the studio accomodate that? If it wasn’t a lead character, they might consider paring down the role, or using CGI and stunt doubles where they could. I liked the suggestion that they should write the pregnancy in and do a WTD? story. 😉

  22. Andrea says:

I don’t get all these people saying surprises do happen. I have been on bc for 14 years (and taken it religiously) and had sex for 14 years straight and I have never, ever had a “surprise”. I am either infertile or it doesn’t happen THAT often.

My best guy friend DID have a “surprise”: one time minus condom resulted in baby #4. He always has said that it only takes once unprotected. That IMO is a surprise/accident.

    • Belle says:

Just because you have never had BC fail, doesn’t mean it never happens. I would guess that *most* of the time when birth control fails, it is operator error… but not always.

      • Andrea says:

I’m just a firm believer that it has more to do with human/operator error versus failure rate. I have never heard of one person getting pregnant who consistently and deligently took their bc; not to say that it doesn’t happen, but I feel it is far more rare than say operator error.

  23. Jackie Jormp Jomp says:

She is such a “glowing” pregnant woman. I’ve always been kinda neutral on her looks, but she is absolutely radiant right now.

  24. Amy says:

Who cares? The Marvel films are so done to death. i wish they’d just stop.

  25. Trashaddict says:

I never thought I would be so old-fashioned but I do kind of miss the days where people tried out being a couple for a while BEFORE they had a kid together. Is it now a requirement to get pregnant and then go through with a wedding a year or so later? I worry that these Hollywood babies who come in spates are little more than fashionable accessories.
