Jennifer Aniston debuts a new voiceover ad for Aveeno: interesting or tedious?

MSA-010891

Jennifer Aniston is still hustling for Aveeno. The Forever Hustle, right? If not Aveeno, then SmartWater, and if not SmartWater, it’s Living Proof. She’s mostly a model and a brand at this point. Which… I mean, props to her. Aniston is a seriously wealthy woman and most of the money she’s made over the past three to four years has been from her endorsement deals rather than her film career, although her film career is still pretty lucrative too.

Anyway, Aniston has some new interviews on behalf of her Aveeno contract. She gave one to E! News which we covered on Sunday – Jennifer talking about how Justin “hijacks” her Aveeno products. And now there are some new quotes from an interview she did with WWD:

Doing a voiceover for an Aveeno commercial: “The mini movie is basically just informing the audience on what is behind Aveeno products and how they are made and where they come from and the detail that they pay [attention to in terms of] what goes into the products. What I learned about is how they make the products, the farm that they go to in Canada, the climate and the importance of the soil and how they get that oat from being an oat in the field to being in a bottle.”

Enunciating: “It was an easy day. No makeup, no hair. I rolled up and learned some stuff about oats. But it is interesting how you have to hit certain inflections and hit certain words. It is very specific. There is also a time issue where you have to speed up.”

Doing so many product endorsements: “The demand with time isn’t that great. You just do it when you have those few months off here and there, and it is nice because it is balances out the other stuff. It’s nice to be a part of skin-care companies and hair care and all that. It’s just a different business to dip your toes into.”

Public mentions of aging: “Your age always has to be mentioned and men don’t really get that for some reason. It’s not like you see Joe Schmo, 37. Women and men today in their 40s are so much healthier than they were 30 years ago in their 40s. It was a different time. We know how to take care ourselves. We know what to put in our bodies to fuel us that’s healthy and organic and not processed, and the importance of drinking water and cutting out sugars and bad fats. Before, we just didn’t know that, and we didn’t have the technology with skin care that we have today.”

[From WWD]

Is she right about society always noting a woman’s age but never a man’s age? I think she’s half-right – society does make a point of always noting a woman’s age, but I’ve noticed that in the past five years or so, men have really begun to face the same kind of aging/beauty standards as women. We talk about men and aging more often, we note which men look good or bad for their age, what men are gaining or losing weight and which dudes have lost their pretty. Is that a good or bad thing? It’s a good thing if you’re like, “Yeah, why shouldn’t men face the same kind of superficial standards women face?” It’s a bad thing if you’re like, “Damn, why should anyone have to face those standards?” Glass half full/glass half empty.

Aniston has been doing these interviews because there’s a new commerical/infomercial for Aveeno which just debuted this weekend. As she says in the WWD interview, Aniston narrates it and I have to ask… is her voice always this nasal and stuffed-up sounding? She sounds like she has a sinus infection. Also: I think I’m obsessed with the way she says “oat”. For real.

    I adore Jen

  2. NewWester says:

When does Angelina Jolie’s new movie come out? I want to see if here publicist will ramp up the number of Jennifer Aniston stories given or leaked to the media.
I have already seen a headline on a tabloid saying ” Marry me now! I’m pregnant!”

    • CL says:

I saw that yesterday too! Then I had to grab my eyeballs off the floor because I’d rolled them so hard that they fell out.

      • Hiddles forever says:

Bwahahahaha yes, the sooner Angie’s movie is out the better it is for us poor audiences… An Aniston article per day is too much!

    • Jackie says:

I believe Maleficent comes out on May 30th. I can’t wait! Have you seen the trailers? They just released another one last week I think it was.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@NewWester, who wrote: “When does Angelina Jolie’s new movie come out? I want to see if here publicist will ramp up the number of Jennifer Aniston stories given or leaked to the media. I have already seen a headline on a tabloid saying ” Marry me now! I’m pregnant!”

And ‘this’ is why I believe Jennifer Aniston tracks the JP’s and competes with them. Every time the JP’s have a project–especially Angie–Jen is in the news, for very little reason. I predict the month of April is going to be unbearably saturated with photos of Jen and Justin all loved up and countless articles/interviews about how fabulous her body and hair are … I wouldn’t even be surprised to see another ‘naked’ magazine cover before May 30th.

  3. Eva says:

She looks like Chelsea Handler in that first pic.

  4. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

She’d better get it while the gettin’s good.

  5. The. Original. G says:

She went to a farm and learned absolutely nothing interesting about oats that she could repeat. Riveting.

    • HappyMom says:

She is so fascinating. Please, there must some other interview out there we could get a link too. I’d love to sit here all morning and listen to her.

      • Janet says:

She’s about as fascinating as watching paint dry on a wall, and just about as deep.

  6. lisa2 says:

I get what she is saying regarding age; but it is a bit off for me too. She has always made such a big deal about her birthdays. Going so far as to announce her big birthday bashes and doing magazine covers that say Fabulous at 40. These things say HEY I”M FINE with getting older and dont’ care if anyone knows. But I noticed after she tured 41 or 42 those big birthday announcements stopped. This year nothing really about her turning 45. Very low key. Everyone gets the age thing in the media. It happens yes more with women but men get it too.. the 37 year old actor/the 40 year old actor/the 50 year old actor. I think the age thing is bothering her. She has said on more than one occasion she hates when people compliment her about her looks and the say “for her age”. Nothing wrong with that; but I think she is very very very age conscious.

There are other actresses her age that don’t make a deal about it.. look at Tina, Julia, Amy, Sandra, and others. They just go on and do their thing. But they are not promoting their bodies, hair and exercise. If this is your narrative then that is where the focus will be. Right or wrong. It is what she is promoting so people are going to go there.

She is a fit person; good body; but face wise she is looking in her 40’s. I think that reality is hitting home and there in lies the problem

    • Esmom says:

To be fair, I’m not sure if it she is the one who has made a big deal about her birthday as much as the media has. But I agree that it was clearly less a big deal to her than it is now, as she faces more scrutiny and the age gap between her and the “up and coming” It Girls continues to grow.

      • MrsBPitt says:

Exactly…she is at the age, where the scripts are going to be more of her playing a Mom, than an ingenue…I don’t think she is happy about that!

      • lisa2 says:

I think when you invite an entertainment show to film the event that is not the media but you..

      • beee34 says:

She invited Billy Bush to Mexico to interview her for her birthday…… if that is not making a big deal about it, I do not know what is!
Do not forget her pr team sending birthday details to People every year.

      • TC says:

        @beee34 — Thank you!

She makes her age a topic of conversation because it goes hand-in-hand with her lifestyle brand she’s now pushing. Her age has to be the focus so other women are compelled to buy her products. So for her to harp on the media mentioning age is disingenuous.

  7. bella says:

    I know what you mean.
It could be coke…or that she’s just incredibly dopey and goofy.
I don’t hate on Jennifer…in fact I was an enormous Rachel fan…but I never understood how she made the leap to film.
Her acting lacks depth…it’s one dimensional.
And she ALWAYS ends up back at that goofy person…I just don’t get it.

    • epiphany says:

How did she make the leap? Two names – Brad Pitt, and Stephen Huvane. Most lucrative divorce in Hollywood history, and I don’t mean the financial settlement.
And don’t think Huvane isn’t costing her a fortune – why do you think she’s doing all these endorsement deals?
      I don’t think she’s a cokehead, I think she’s just rather empty-headed.

    • Memme says:

      Bella-
Not only is her acting one-dimensional, she plays the *same* character in every movie. Or maybe it seems that way because of her acting? I think she is one of those people who is afraid of looking stupid or silly, so therefore doesn’t put herself out there when it comes to her work. Which to me, defeats the purpose of being an actor. I still like her as Rachel, but I acknowledge even Rachel is another variation of the same.
      Epiphany-
You can add being on one of the biggest TV shows on the planet to that list. To be fair she started making movies before Brad Pitt, but you’re right, he did catapult her to a whole other level of fame.

  8. Madame says:

    Bleh! Tedious. Definitely tedious.

What other wactress does an interview about narrating a commercial? (For the live of Gawd). Someone stop her before she gets as annoying as Goop.

  9. GeeMoney says:

I don’t blame Jennifer for being the spokesperson/whatever for Aveeno. They make really good products!

    • Esmom says:

I thought so, too, until I read somewhere that they test on animals. Not sure if that’s true — I have been meaning to follow up and have not yet.

  10. epiphany says:

She “rolled up”, learned some stuff about oats, and read some lines.”
So, she approaches her endorsement deals with the same passion and conviction with which she approaches her acting.

  11. SWEETLYN says:

    1. She is Overly overrated
    2. She looks her age in the first picture which isn’t a bad thing at all!
    3. She has bad skin. And I wonder why Aveeno hired her
    4. Her voice! I don’t get it!!!

    • Sullivan says:

I agree, she looks her age which is fine. Considering all the smoking, drinking, and sunbathing, it’s a testament to whatever she does to her skin (and it ain’t Aveeno) that she doesn’t look much older.

She has the voice of a chain-smoker, so it’s weird to hear that voice espousing the virtues of natural, healthy products.

Plus, it’s strange to hear her enunciate.

      • Liberty says:

Wonder why they released this V/O. Her voice sounds like she was having a sinus episode. Or an allergy attack from something. Maybe from the natural fields of OHTES.

      • Yeah, I’m at a loss as to how she’s repping skin care products. I don’t think her skin is terrible–but she’s almost always orange-ish (whenever she’s not filming), and her skin, like her hair, is just average. I wouldn’t be ranting and raving over it–due to all the tanning.

But I guess Aveeno isn’t high brand or whatever–so perfect fit?

And yeah–her voice is always slurry and weird. Always. To me she sounds like a drunk person who’s trying to talk very carefully because they think they can fool you into thinking they’re sober. Has she always sounded like that?

      • TC says:

She’s admitted to laser treatments and chemical peels, the latter which are extreme and leave you looking like a burn victim for several days until the dead skin falls off. I find it odd that she’s saying all this while shilling for Aveeno. But maybe she made these comments before her Aveeno deal. I don’t know.

And there’s pap shots of Aniston going in and out of Sonya Dakar Skin Care in LA. But she’s also a client of skin care specialist Dawn DaLuise, because Aniston’s named was mentioned when DaLuise was arrested for attempting to hire someone to literally kill her competition.

So Aniston has a lot of other things going on “behind the scenes,” but Aveeno and all it’s “natural goodness” is what she’s selling you.

      • Sullivan says:

@ VG: Yep, I have a boozy aunt who does that exaggerated enunciation to disguise the drunken slur.

  12. Badirene says:

Didn’t Lainey out Jennifer and Chelsea Handler for coke use a while back, I think JA gave an interview and mentioned they had perfume parties (whatever they are) and Lainey stated when together it was certainly not perfume being sniffed.

  13. Aurie says:

Based on my gossip reading experiences, they always list the men’s ages too……

Honestly this just sounds like one of those BS things radical feminists say.

  14. Jessica6 says:

Oh, this vapid creature again, and, please…a interview about voiceover ad? LOL! Never got this overrated woman, and never will. In the first pic she looks either bloated or has overdone it with the botox and fillers. If it wasn’t for Pitt and Huvane, this carmel coated Wonka fizzy Oompa Loompa would have vanished over the Hollywood Hills the second “Friends” ended production. I don’t hate on her, but she always got under my skin.

And speaking of which, WHY in hell Aveeno chose her to promote their skin care line is way beyond me. Bizarre.

  15. lisa2 says:

She doesn’t look bad.. so why worry about the number.. My Grandmother said she never worried about getting older.. embrace it.. because we know what the alternative is.

  16. Paige says:

She’s a serious pot head-no coke here and his eyebrows and hairline are just to manscaped…

    • If she’s doing coke, or any other hard drug, then I will retract all comments about her skin being crappy and average. Because then she’d look damn good, all things considering.

But I’d agree that she’s a pot head, and likes her margaritas. It’s still funny that she’s talking about how healthy she is, when she can’t put down the ciggies or push away the extra salty rim of that margarita glass.

  17. Jackie says:

Something about her voice and that cheezy background music reminds of those dumb films we used to watch in health class back in the day.

  18. Des says:

Uhm funny i found that she uses these other skin care products and none of them are aveeno.
    Very interesting……

  19. GreenEyes says:

I get it’s a commercial, but she is a well known & paid actress; this commercial shouldn’t come off sounding like she’s reading a Book Report for Health Class. However, the entire thing sounds exactly like a book report, it’s even more noticeable when she reads how she feels about using nature & natural products.. It’s annoying & should sound more well…. natural.

    • Candy Love says:

      ^ this

I wonder if this was the best take or is it just laziness on the directors part. The odd long pauses just throw everything off and like you said she an actress she should know how to make it flow so it doesn’t come off like she reading a book.

  20. floretta50 says:

Angie is out and about promoting her Malificent movie, without failure I am sure Aniston have prepared months in advance there is going to be something from her from now until, non-stop. there is something on Huff post about how she hates the paps just this week, stay tuned. aniston is predictable and fun!

  21. Vanderhootchie says:

Tedious. Besides, Aveeno products contain many harmful and/or carcinogenic chemicals, formaldehyde and parabens being just two. Uck. *yawn* This will be the last Aniston post I open. And I don’t even open Kardashian posts anymore. I can’t stand the site of her phony, over-surgeried face and that fug ass of hers. Doesn’t she know it’s a huge joke?

  22. Anon says:

Everything about Jennifer is over-sold by Jennifer and her PR Guru (her term) to the point of ridiculousness. What does Jen think of Aveeno animal-testing their product or what does Aveeno think of Jen fudging on their product line while giving interviews? “I’ve been using Aveeno such and such since my twenties…blah” When did the product line expand and let’s do math….read/listen to past interviews.

  23. nani says:

She is so old in the first photo! That’s what she is when there is no photoshop.

  24. Granger says:

I love her comment about how she finds time to do so many product endorsements: “The demand with time isn’t that great. You just do it when you have those few months off here and there…” Those FEW MONTHS off HERE AND THERE. That sounds so ridiculously privileged and snotty.

    • Des says:

Few months to plan and have a wedding you would think . One minute she’s to busy to marry now she’s got all this time…to make product commercials. Poor Eddie monster .

  25. Barbiegirl says:

I like the ad, informative, not that “beautiful jennifer aniston” crap of a few months ago…
I personally do not like her voice but the ad format is good, and it made me want to try the product…

  26. Barbiegirl says:

Cannot believe I would fall for that…

  27. Sorella says:

Ever since Friends, I’ve never been able to figure out why I hate her voice…a nasal-blow-your-nose combined with that tight-mouth way of talking she does..just yuck…to me, she should
never do animation, more than a minute of it would have me begging she use a Kleenex! So unappealing! And yes, her emphasis on the word “oat” is funny to the ear.

    • Camille (The Original) says:

Completely agree! That is one of the reasons why I can’t stand her as an actress as well- her irritating voice. I think her smoking habit has only made it worse over the years.

      • Sorella says:

Is it smoking or maybe combined with an inflection, like she thinks it sounds cool. Sounds to like she needs to get her sinuses checked stat, total nose-talker.

  28. Sal says:

I wonder how her fans feel about her pimping a product that is tested on animals? Pushing bottled water pollutants, and now creams that have formaldehyde in them and test on animals? She should come with a toxic waste warning sign around her neck.

Btw, any one know what testing on animals means, when talking about cosmetics? They pour the ingredients in cats and dogs eyes, inject it into their skin etc. Some are maimed and lose their sight. Yep, Aniston’s an animal lover alright. She is such a cold, superficial, money-hungry phony. Oh, and that goes for Ellen, too, since her covergirl contract was for a company that also tested on animals (despite her crocodile tears over the adopted dog that she palmed off onto someone else).

  29. Sal says:

She definitely does some drugs and hardcore alcohol. Coke could be it.
