In Touch: Zac Efron actually broke his jaw last fall during ‘a drug binge’

Zac Efron

Here’s some photos of Zac Efron out and about on Monday. He doesn’t appear to have any bruises or scratches on his face. Zac had a sketchy few weeks. The last time we caught up with the former Disney boy wonder, he was catching fallout after his full-blown melee” in LA’s Skid Row. Zac claimed to have taken the hardest punch he’d ever felt. His “bodyguard” started making up outlandish stories to explain the fight. The guy was trying to make Zac sound like a hero, but his tales only made the situation worse.

We heard last year that Zac went to rehab twice for cocaine addiction. He declared himselfhealthy and happy.” TMZ reported last week that Zac never really went to rehab and only attended a few private therapy sessions. Then there’s the lingering mystery of Zac’s broken jaw from last fall. Did he really slip on a puddle and do that much damage? This week’s issue of In Touch spoke to a “friend” who says Zac broke it during a drug binge:

Zac Efron’s suspicious scuffle in Downtown LA’s Skid Row is just the latest of many bizarre incidents for the star. And insiders tell In Touch that after two reported stints in rehab this year, Zac is struggling now more than ever.

An insider shares with In Touch that just four months ago, it was actually a drug binge that led to Zac’s broken jaw.

Zac’s jaw had to be wired shut after he broke it in November, stating that he slipped in a puddle of water at his Hollywood Hills home. But the insider tells In Touch that he hurt himself during a drug binge. “He even does drugs alone,” the inside source exclusively tells the mag. “It’s sad.”

“Zac came out of rehab and almost instantly started using drugs again,” one of Zac’s friends reveals in the new In Touch, on stands now.

According to his friends, Zac knows he’s in trouble. “He doesn’t want to be some burnout Disney star, but I just don’t think he’s ready to stop the party,” a second insider tells In Touch. “He needs to get help before it’s too late.”

[From In Touch]

If this story is true, then it really is tragic. I’m not sure how accurate IT’s story is since this “friend” is paying lip service to Zac’s rehab that never actually happened (according to TMZ). I hope Zac takes the Skid Row incident as a huge wake up call and gets himself cleaned up for good. He did score a new role in an adaptation of John Grisham’s The Associate. Zac replaces Shia LaBeouf, who dropped out for unknown reasons. God only knows why.

    duh

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Right? What else was he doing on Skid Row.

    • Wiffie says:

Hadn’t everyone already suspected the broken jaw was from a fall due to a drug binge? I feel like it’s old news. Unconfirmed, but I think we all knew this.

      • Size Does Matter says:

Is it possible to fall on your face hard enough to break your jaw? I kind of thought it was from something else entirely but probably drug related somehow.

      • MCraw says:

Yeah, blind items came out about this pretty much immediately after we got the puddle story. I really don’t get why drugs is something ppl turn to.

      • lunchcoma says:

Size, it is in fact possible. I know someone who had a fairly similar accident. However, he also had a potentially fatal blood alcohol level. The reason we don’t hear too many stories about young, otherwise healthy people breaking their faces is that most people will instinctively put out their hands to break a forward fall.

    • Dubois says:

Exactly – and double duh to the “he even does drugs alone” statement. Part of being addicted is stopping recreational/social use and doing drugs alone.

    • Dommy Dearest says:

I second or third or fourth the duh. I thought we all knew this.

  2. blue marie says:

Wasn’t that the general consensus when it happened? That he was on something? I seem to remember this conversation..

Is it wrong that I think he’s kinda hot in those photos? I’ve never thought that before, first the lizard and now this, what the hell is wrong with me?

    • mimif says:

Right there with you. I hate myself right now because the guy is smoking.

    • Omega says:

I think the story I heard was that he had actually fallen over in his house and banged his face on a coffee table, while on drugs. I’m too lazy to google it and frankly Zac just isnt worth the effort.

I didnt buy the drug rehab story at the time either. Most Hollywood rehab stories when they come from the actors camp are just knee jerk PR moves. The powers that be (studio heads, casting directors, producers and directors) have already been talking that actor X is difficult or unreliable, a potential liability and its starting to impede casting and maybe even insuarance. Telling the world that you are now in rehab may just be a way to let the bosses know that you are ready to be good now. Whatever. I never bought that whole rehab tale he was spinning.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      It was myy guess also

  3. Barrett says:

Yeah he remains very “fit” for a drug addict.

    • Shannon says:

If he’s on cocaine the that makes sense. If he continues however, his health and looks will deteriorate eventually.

  4. PunkyMomma says:

    He looks deceptively healthy.

  5. lucy2 says:

Well that seemed kind of obvious. I feel bad for him, I hope he gets help before things get even worse.
I’m really amazed he got a new role in what sounds like a studio film, in the midst of all his difficulties. Aren’t they worried about insuring him? They cast Shia and now him? I have to think there are other actors out there who would be less trouble.

    • mom2two says:

From what I read, this movie has been in pre-production for a long time that Shia was rumored for the lead in 2008 and most likely had a dropped it due to the long pre-production. Zac is also producing this movie.
I just hope Zac gets clean. I thought the broken jaw was always the result of a drug binge.

      • Amy says:

Shia dropped out years ago but the press doesn’t want to report that and Andrew Garfield was rumored to be taking over it 2 years ago

      • lucy2 says:

Ah thanks, that makes a little more sense.

  6. Tania says:

He should consider himself lucky he’s still being offered roles, and good roles at that! Get your sh!t together Zac. Before you put yourself in the ground.

  7. TG says:

He must be at a low point if he is now going to skid row to get his drugs and fighting with drug dealers. Don’t they usually come to you when you a rich celeb?

    • mimif says:

There was some talk that the insider dealers were told to stay away from him, whether from his handlers or studio execs, so he had to go elsewhere to get his fix.

  8. allheavens says:

Wasn”t it confirmed a few days ago that is “bodyguard” is a convicted drug dealer? Zac better get it together and take his behind to a REAL drug rehab program, one a LONG way from LA.

  9. huh says:

Getting your jaw wired up sounds like ten kinds of hell

  10. Mia4S says:

Well what’s interesting about that new role is that he is coming on as a producer. Not uncommon but it also helps avoid a certain amount of scrutiny in other areas *cough*.

This story would not be surprising. It’s not easy for a young male to break his jaw in a simple slip and fall. Could happen, but add it to everything else? Where there’s smoke there’s fire.

  11. Darlene says:

There was a Blind Item recently about how he is flat broke and is down on skid row doing sexual favors for money, and that it keeps getting rough, which is why he’s injured so often. 🙁 What a sad turn for a young man who seems to have everything going for him. 🙁

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

I don’t buy this rumor but a bad drug deal looks credible for me

    • MissMoody says:

Bogus. If Efron really had to go gay for pay, he wouldn’t be doing so on Skid Row. I’m sure there are many rich gay men that would happily shell out big bucks for some of his time

    • Bridget says:

Consider the source on that one.

  12. Bread and Circuses says:

“He did score a new role in an adaptation of John Grisham’s The Associate. Zac replaces Shia LaBeouf, who dropped out for unknown reasons.”

Whoever is producing the film is probably crying bitter tears over their lot in life. Get rid of an erratic a-hole only to gain a closeted addict.

    • Amy says:

Shia dropped out a long time ago when this was Paramount film. The press just want to take another swipe at him.

    • Anna-fo-Fanna says:

HE’S producing it! Which would explain why he was able to get the part. This has bad news written aaaaallll over it. I wish RDJ could have a come-to-jesus talk with him, but addicts don’t stop until they’re ready. It’s a shame. 🙁

  13. ReignbowGirl says:

If these stories are true, I hope he chooses to turn things around soon. He has the type of bone structure and good looks that will age extremely well, much as Rob Lowe has done. He could conceivably have a long and steady career.

  14. Meggin says:

I hope he turns around soon. But it was pretty obvious he broke his jaw while on drugs and not “slipping on a puddle” (though slipping on a puddle is something I would actually do but I’m clumsy lol)

  15. Nan209 says:

Well, I can actually buy that a fall can break a jaw…especially when your face breaks the fall. I’ve passed out and ended up with a concussion, broken tooth, goose egg and a few layers of skin gone… All after doing the funky chicken at my doctors office and hitting a counter and a wall on the way down.

My son just fell yesterday playing basketball and wound up with layers of skin gone for his face, a fat lip, skinned knee, rang his bell, and hurt his shoulder…after his fight with gravity he landed so hard his teacher heard it and his shoe flew off.

I don’t discount a fall jacking a jaw up. How or why is the real question. Was he coked out? Was he boozes out? Was it an honest accident?

I hope he is sober. I think he has potential but if he can’t get the partying and drugs under control he won’t last.

  16. Emily C. says:

Another child star down. I can’t see anything with American kids in it any longer without feeling upset. The British seem able to produce sober, happy child stars, so it’s not simply the fame and money. There is something else going on over here that destroys kids.

  17. Camille (The Original) says:

Well duh – was my first thought when I read the headline.

  18. Leslie says:

Poor guy. He must have lots of demons he’s fighting. Wonder if it goes back to his time at Disney? Something bad must have happened in his childhood.

  19. Colored Red Me says:

You don’t go to skid Row for powder cocaine… You go there for crack

  20. Alexa says:

I really hope, at the very least, he STAYS ALIVE. He’s got a lot going for him. I don’t think anyone who is even semi-informed, can be surprised to hear that a famous person has tried “drugs.” Unfortunately – for a certain percentage of the population – this experimentation instantly invites a few of us to the VIP suite of Club Addict. And when you’ve got lots of money and fame, it’s not going to be difficult to visit that “suite” a few more times, “just once more – for fun.” Until maybe after just a few months or a year or two – the only time you feel okay and at home is alone (or with another addict) and as hefty a supply of drugs as you can acquire.

Zac – if you aren’t ready to stop right now, PLEASE just PLAY IT AS SAFE as you possibly can. And know that YOU NEVER HAVE TO USE AGAIN. Help is all around whenever you’re ready. So just ask for it. (STAY ALIVE!)
