Naomi Watts covers Harper’s Bazaar Australia: strikingly pretty or boring?

Naomi-Watts-Harpers-cover-australia
Naomi Watts covers Harpers Bazaar Australia’s May issue. She’s wearing a pink Burberry dress with a gorgeous gray coat from the label draped over her arm. The editorial, shot by James White, is just beautiful and features Naomi looking ethereal in various designer clothes while sitting in a vintage truck. She looks so classic and pretty, they did a great job styling her.

Inside, Naomi talks about her decision to do comedy after being known for more serious, meaty roles. (She was in that horrible Movie 43 film, as were so many other celebrities, but I guess that doesn’t count.) The Daily Mail, which has some scant excerpts from Naomi’s interview, lets us know that she has three comedies coming out this year: Birdman, co-starring Michael Keaton, St. Vincent with Melissa McCarthy and Bill Murray, and While We’re Young with Ben Stiller. She’s been busy since the panned Diana biopic. Naomi says that her decision to move to comedy was prompted by her family and sons, Sasha, 5, and Sammy, 5. Here’s more:

[Watts] said she needed a change in direction after some intense and sometimes harrowing roles, such as her true-life character in The Impossible, for which she received an Oscar nomination.

‘It was really intense,’ the mother-of-two revealed. I’d walk through the door at night and my family needed my attention 100 per cent, yet you’re still linked to work. It was time to change gears. And accept laughter.’

Naomi, who got her big break in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, said that she initially found a niche in darker performances because she was looking for emotional characters, ‘that find themselves in situations that are evolving in some way.’

‘[Also] comedy is harder to get right than drama,’ the stunning blonde admitted.

‘And then I just stopped getting called [by casting directors] for comedy.’

The US-based star, who has been in a relationship with fellow actor Liev Schreiber for almost a decade, admitted she has her doubts about her ability to bring the laughs.

‘I’m not sure I can do comedy,’ she confessed of the drastic change.

‘It was scary being among that crowd – people who know what their [sic] doing. [Each movie] was a scary couple of weeks.’

In the glamorous photo shoot for the magazine which took place in Los Angeles, Naomi wears a range of coveted pieces from Balmain, Nina Ricci, Chanel and Burberry.

[From The Daily Mail]

If Naomi deliberately made a switch to comedy after feeling the weight of darker roles then good for her. I’ve always thought that actors just let the chips fall rather than making more deliberate career moves, but I’m just judging by my brief career as a tech contractor. Sometimes I’d have several choices but more often than not I took the jobs I was offered. More in-demand actors like Naomi probably do consider their options and decide to change course.

Also, I’m so glad that Naomi and Liev are still going strong. They usually don’t say much about each other or their family life, but at the Golden Globes Naomi admitted that she’s the one who asked Liev to take her phone number when they first met at a party. Before she left, after they hit it off, she asked him “don’t you want my digits?” That’s cute! They’ve been together since 2005 and I hope they make it for much longer. Don’t tell me he’s a cheater! I won’t believe you.

She’s one of those people who never looks the same to me. I wouldn’t recognize her without the title.

  2. blue marie says:

She looks good, lovely photos and I would never have pegged her doing a comedy. Curious to see how she does.

  3. TheOriginalKitten says:

‘Shopped but still incredibly gorgeous. Then again, I’m a Watts fangirl-I think she’s a fantastic actress.
I love that she doesn’t have a crazy-looking tweaked face and she always has a really natural, comfortable look.

      @TOK everything you said, exactly.

    • Kosmos says:

She’s always been a top actress, a genuine person, a good role model for women, so I have to hand it to Naomi….she’s just cool and she’s someone we can really admire and feel good about, along with some of those other great actresses with similar qualities.

I love Naomi, but I first thought that was Paris Hilton when my eyes skimmed over the page… AGH! I’M SORRY NAOMI!!!!

  5. Rocket says:

She never struck me as very feminine, which seems how they’re portraying her. On a bike with her kids is how I picture her.

I think she’s a competent actress, but nothing extraordinary.

  6. bns says:

I barely recognized her on the cover, and not in a good way.

  7. Esmom says:

She looks beautiful in these photos, and in “real life,” too. Although I would be curious to see how she’d look with slightly darker hair, I think she could be even more stunning.

I think she’s a great actress and it’s nice to see her getting so much work. I’d imagine her doing well with whatever type of project she does, although it’s interesting to read how scary it was for her to dive into comedy. Wishing her continued success.

  8. QQ says:

She looks really pretty, she is one of those ladies that the change with/without makeup is rather drastic ( a la Olivia Wilde)

  9. Cecilia says:

Gorgeous photo-shoot. I love Naomi. She is a beautiful woman & a good actress.

“comedy is harder to get right than drama,” Ain’t that the truth. It will be interesting to see her in comedic roles. I like that she keeps her personal life private & her 2 sons are adorable.

After Diana , Nanny was never teh same again.

  11. mimi says:

She’s gorgeous but that top pic used as the mag cover has far too much photoshop going on. Why do they always have to use so much? She clearly doesn’t need a heavy dose of photoshopping because the other pics of her are beautiful and actually look like her! Sorry, pet peeve of mine.

  12. chaine says:

The cover doesn’t even look like her.

  13. Alice says:

Pfff it’s so photoshoped they deleted the car’s window frame behind her face! Someone’s gonna get fired at Harper’s Bazaar !

    • Size Does Matter says:

Good catch! I was all ready to say how great she looks, too, till the ‘shop job was pointed out.

  14. Kimberly says:

Strikingly pretty. I love the shot of her in the car.

  15. InLike says:

I’m in love with the 40’s-50’s retro look of the photo shoot.

  16. Jh says:

    Her family is so adorable.

  17. Ronnie says:

    She looks drop dead gorgeous

  18. Dani2 says:

Gorgeous but she could have been any passably pretty blonde woman with the help of Photoshop/the styling. I don’t think that’s a good thing tbh.

  19. shellybean says:

The pictures are amazing! I always thought that she and her bestie, Nicole, looked a lot alike. However, Naomi looks much better than Nicole these days, as she doesn’t look tweaked.

  20. Lucy says:

She’s lovely. I want nothing but good things for her.
