Chelsea Handler possibly heading to Netflix after E!: step up or step down?

Ever since David Letterman announced his retirement a few weeks ago, Chelsea Handler has been in full-blown hustle mode. It would be amusing except for the fact that Chelsea is, in my view, delusional about her career prospects and where she “belongs.” She is a cable personality – she’s built herself a nice home at E!, and the only thing keeping her from being happy with her powerbase is the fact that Chelsea thinks she’s a network talent. Chelsea thinks she’s top-tier and that she should be – no, she IS – in line for all the top jobs. In Chelsea’s mind, she could be a news anchor. Or at the very least, Bill Maher.

So, the past few weeks have been funny, just because her hustle keeps getting sh-t on by reality. She wanted people to think she was in the running for The Late Show. Not so much. She wanted people to think that she was replacing Craig Ferguson. Not so much. She wanted people to believe that she was in discussions for her own daytime syndicated talk show. Not so much. So where else could she go? How about Netflix, eh?

Chelsea Handler could be headed to Neflix. The host of E!’s Chelsea Lately is in talks with the subscription-video service for a new show, sources told The Hollywood Reporter, emphasizing that a deal is nowhere close to being finalized. Netflix declined comment. THR broke the news last month that Handler plans to leave the E! channel when her contract expires at the end of the year. She’s been with the network for eight years.

“Chelsea intends to leave when her contract expires,” her manager, Irving Azoff, told THR. “She hired me to figure out her life after E! We have at least seven suitors and many ideas.”

At the time, he said that plans for Handler could include a radio presence and a possible nightly or weekly late-night show on another network or digital service.

Handler has long been vocal about her dissatisfaction with E!, accusing the network of incompetent programming and blaming weak lead-ins for ratings declines.

Earlier this month, she posted a photo on Instagram that showed her holding papers with the CBS logo and a caption that read, in part, “Business meeting.” But the network shot down speculation that she was being eyed to take over the 12:30 a.m. time period from Craig Ferguson.

“There are no discussions with Chelsea Handler regarding the network’s 12:30 late-night broadcast,” a CBS spokesperson said. “Her meeting with CBS yesterday was a general meeting with our syndication group.”

The New York Post was the first to report the news of Handler’s talks with Netflix.

[From THR]

Netflix has gotten way more prestigious over the past few years, with in-house production of House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Plus, Netflix is doing a cable channel now, or they will be soon (sort of). So, what would this deal mean for Chelsea? I think it means that people would have to consciously seek her out, that it would no longer be a matter of “let’s see what’s on TV, oh there’s Chelsea Lately, let’s fall asleep watching that.” While Netflix does have some prestige and they’re growing by leaps and bounds these days, I don’t really see this as a step up for Chelsea. It feels like a step sideways, a parallel track. Which is still better than she deserves, but hey, at least it’s not network TV.

PS… Craig Ferguson announced last night that he was leaving The Late Late Show in December. But Chelsea isn’t up for that gig, right?

Droll comic.. Step sideways… Outta the way.

  2. paola says:

I’d say step on a side. And sit down.

  3. Rhea says:

What I would like to know is where would Craig Ferguson go after leaving his show. That’s more interesting to find out.

    • Tatjana says:

I didn’t know Craig was leaving. I’m going to go silently cry in a corner now.

    • Dutch says:

He’s getting a $12 million payout from CBS and is already going to host a syndicated game show starting in the fall

  4. GiGi says:

I completely agree that I think she would suffer on Netflix. The only time I’ve ever seen her show was when I was falling asleep turning the channels… I don’t think I’m alone in that! On Netflix you’d have to seek her out specifically and I don’t know many who would press three buttons just to get to that.

  5. Artemis says:

The only way she should step is down into a canyon: Coyote style. Meep Meep!

  6. Maya says:

Karma is a bitch and finally Chelsea is slowly going to disappear from our screens. This makes me believe that there is something called tv God.

  7. Mouse says:

I would never search for her on Netflix. Step down Chelsea.

  8. NewWester says:

She looks really rough in that first pic. Did she just roll out of bed or come off a weekend bender?

  9. Samantha25 says:

I doubt she’ll do well. It seems like people who go from free to pay subscriptions don’t do well. Howard Stern was huge on regular radio but ratings plummeted when he went to satellite radio. Netflix is still a niche service and I don’t think Chelsea’s ratings were even that high on E. I doubt she’ll be successful.

  10. minime says:

That would make me reconsider my Netflix subscription, so I hope not…and yes, she would suffer from that. I think most of the people who watch her show do it on the “zapping” moments.

that top picture looks like someone tried to renovate a barn by putting edgy black paint and a screen door-slash-mosquito net over it and tried to pass it on as sexy modern architecture.

  12. Kiddo says:

She might be thinking she is ahead of the curve since there are more and more cable cord cutters and younger people who never cable up to begin with. However, with the latest FCC decision, cable/internet providers will now be permitted to throttle speed and charge online providers extra for preferential speed. This likely means the cost will be passed on to consumers/users. You can thank the Comcast lobbyist hired by the FCC. (I realize this is somewhat OT, but still sort of related)

    • Goofpuff says:

ugh and that’s why I cut cable and never went back. cable companies are far worse with the we don’t actually care about you attitude and the price gouging/hikes for loyal customers are ridic. basically if you are a loyal customer you get shat on so it’s not worth it.

      • Kiddo says:

Get ready to be shat on, on the net. Slow net for upstarts or small sites, fast net for big companies with expensive services. And they have the audacity to call it ‘Net neutrality’, doncha love it?

      • mimif says:

Nice to see someone finally address this pile of shat as you so eloquently described it. A couple itty bitty websites I frequent actually suggested interested viewers start screen capping or printing info out because it might not even be accessible after this shit goes down. Buh bye internet, ’twas fun while it lasted. *sobs in mimosa*

  13. GeeMoney says:

Man, she looks waaaaaaaay older than 38. Yipes.

And I feel sorry for Netflix.

  14. lucy2 says:

I’m pretty sure Netflix was already like “uh no, not talking to her about anything.”
Her and her team’s methods are so transparent! They put her name out there as being seriously considered for Letterman – nope Colbert was chosen long before that. Then tried for Craig’s job, with the stupid CBS photo, and when CBS said nope, not happening, she was all “I could never be on a network” and claimed she didn’t know there was CBS stuff in that photo (please). And now Netflix? They’re eventually going to run out of channels to start rumors about!

I am SOOO sad Craig is leaving. I hope he goes on to do something fantastic that he loves, he’s such a smart, funny, decent guy, and I want good things for him.

  15. Cecilia says:

I can’t see anything working out for this sarcastic hack. She appears humorless & angry to me, which is NOT a winning combination. Although, I love my Netflix.

  16. rainy17 says:

I find her a pretty good stand up comedian. I liked her show. I thought she seemed like a great mentor and really gave a lot of comedians a hand up on her show.

    • lucy says:

The vicious disdain for Handler here on this site is really off-putting.

So what if Chelsea doesn’t look like a model – she isn’t a model.

Yes, she nurtures up-and-coming comedic talent – yay!

Yes, I enjoy her show and laugh at the humor presented in it. It’s a nice mix of celebrity gossip and poking fun at people who are too full of themselves. Very much like this website, only with more comedy.

      • Lisa says:

        Touché.

      • Mouse says:

My dislike of her has nothing to do with her looks. I’m likely in the minority in that I find most comics offensive…my pick for comedy is John Pinette (RIP)

      • Maya says:

@Lucy: so you are critizing us for attacking Chelsea about her “talent”, looks & show but you are fine with the fact that Chelsea brutally attacks other people in the name of humour? Not only does she use racist slurs she also attacks children – no decent human will support someone who does that.

PS: many people hate Chelsea and you should read other websites – it’s not only CB. This woman is not well liked simply because she is a hypocrite, racist, double standed woman who slept her way to a tv show. More importantly she attacks other celebs but her own showbusiness friends are off limits – funny isn’t? Her friends are the ones who do stupid and immoral things.

    • bcgirl says:

      “nurtures” ?
Is that what you call her eye rolling and constant abuse of her guest comics who are, and always have been 10 thousand times funnier than her?

      • Amber says:

Yeah, “nurtures”? I stopped watching her show when she (became besties with Aniston, which was the beginning of her selling out, and she was verbally attacking children on the regular and then) fired the overwhelming majority of her staff. And as you say, a lot of her one-liners are aimed at the few repeat comedians that are allowed to come on the show, (those who know their place, are never “funnier” than Handler, and welcome the abuse). The women is a total hypocrite. The type that coos over Miranda Kerr, is part of of drunk-blondes brigade, and the type of person who kisses Kardashian butt if they come on her show or Khloe is sitting at the roundtable. And since she runs with A-listers now (who instantly become off limits just for publicly associating with her or having similar management and PR) she probably doesn’t give those comedians the time of day.

  17. Redheadwriter says:

    How about just “step away.”

  18. Kelly says:

I don’t get why people hate her so much. I think she’s funny.

  19. I would never search for her on Netflix. Step down Chelsea.

  20. Lux says:

I’m going to miss Craig, Geoff and Secretariat so much.

  21. heatherm says:

Her books are soooo funny and I enjoy her show but I’m fairly Netflix illiterate 🙁

  22. heatherm says:

And while I’m sure some of these commenters just truly don’t enjoy her style of comedy it’s fairly obvious the dislike for her is jolie/Aniston related……
