Kerry Washington gave birth to baby Isabelle Amarachi Asomugha 2 weeks ago

Yay, Kerry Washington had her baby! On April 21st. Yeah. Two weeks ago. Someone (Kerry’s publicist) finally got around to announcing the birth on Friday (May 2nd). Kerry gave birth to a baby girl. Kerry and her husband Nnamdi Asomugha have named their daughter Isabella Amarachi Asomugha. According to the baby name sites, “Amarachi” is of African Igbo origin and it means “grace of God.” Did anyone else think “Amarachi” sounded Italian? Maybe I’m mispronouncing it.

After the most stylish pregnancy in history, Kerry Washington has given birth, PEOPLE confirms. The Scandal star welcomed daughter Isabelle Amarachi on Monday, April 21 in Los Angeles, TMZ reports.

“Kerry is at home busy with the baby,” a source tells PEOPLE.

It’s the first child for Washington and her husband, former San Francisco 49s cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who tied the knot in a secret wedding last July. Washington, 37, revealed her pregnancy last October and debuted her baby bump on the red carpet in a cream Balenciaga gown at the Golden Globes in January. “I have the best date of the night — my little accessory,” she said, gesturing towards her belly.

Her growing bump had a fashion moment all of its own when she bared her midriff in a hot pink beaded crop top at the SAG awards later that month, and joked, “I don’t have anything to hide anymore.”

Saying that her pregnancy style was all about comfort, Washington admitted that she was excited about the coming months. “I feel really, really blessed,” she said. “It just feels like a really good time.”

[From People]

Congrats to Kerry and Nnamdi. They’re SO undercover as a couple, which… I mean, props to them. They rarely go out together to events, and on the rare occasion that they do, they don’t walk the red carpet together. And in case anyone is doing the math… Kerry and Nnamdi married in late June 2013. If she carried to term…*fiddles with calculator*… that means she got knocked up in late July. So… this was pretty much a honeymoon baby, I suppose. Good for her.

Back to the name… I don’t have a huge problem with it, but I just feel like every little girl in every kindergarten class from now until 2020 is going to be named some variation of Isabelle, Bella, Maddy, Madison, Emily or Emma.

See celebs can keep things hidden from the press if they want to. First her marriage and then the birth of her child. Congrats to Kerry and her husband.

    • aquarius64 says:

Agreed. The ones who claim they can’t deal with the celebrity press are the ones that call the paps, have their people call friendly press and put their business on social media. Those are the ones that are thirsty for attention.

      • Marty says:

Co-sign everything you and V4Real said!

      • Lex says:

Meh… some are far more ‘in demand’ than Washington is…
I’ve never seen her in anything and only knew she was pregnant (and indeed who she was) from this site

      • oakbluffsdiva says:

Yet you felt the need to read the article about a very popular actress whom you’ve never seen in anything and then comment. Some people are just so obtuse.

  2. don't kill me i'm french says:

    Congrats!

  3. T. Fanty Fan says:

glad mother and baby are both well! Bet she will be a very cute little girl too!

  4. GeeMoney says:

Isabelle may be insanely common nowadays, but I think it’s a pretty name.

    • Oakbluffsdiva says:

Actually, “Isabelle” was Kerry’s maternal grandmother’s name. Her middle name is pronounced “A-ma-ra-chee

  5. lucy2 says:

Congrats to them, and how awesome they kept it quiet for 2 weeks! I like how private she is with her personal life. And it may be popular but Isabelle is a beautiful name.

    • Becky1 says:

Yep. I think it’s great that she’s been able to keep her personal life private and didn’t use her pregnancy or the birth of her child for publicity. Very classy!

      • aquarius64 says:

Kerry didn’t shut down a hospital wing like Beyonce’ allegedly did.

      • Inconceivable! says:

@Aquarius – that’s exactly why I love this lady!! She is quite classy and down to earth. Love her!

    • jaye says:

And it’s not Lollipop Cinnamon…so kudos to her for not following the Hollywood trend of ridiculous names.

  6. HappyMom says:

Isabella, Emily and Emma-while common-are all classic, traditional names-so I think they’re lovely. She also shows that you can be a popular actress but completely fly under the radar. Other than when she is at events, there are no pictures of her out randomly shopping or hanging out. And I’m sure it will be the same with her baby. Good for her.

  7. Kate says:

Love, love, love Kerry. Class act.

  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Congrats. I like the name, though agree it’s a trend right now. Pretty, though.

  9. melanie says:

Isn’t Cedars Sinai the official hospital of the celebs with paps hanging out 24/7? How did a big star manage to pull this off? Kudos to her for managing to elude them and preserve her privacy. How she accomplished this without the stalkerazzi getting their shot(s) is anyone’s guess.

    • mercy says:

It’s a huge building with a ton of security and many entrances and exits, and they’re used to dealing with high profile patients. Maybe if a celeb is there for an extended stay or has to use the emergency entrance, it would be more difficult to keep it a secret. It probably also helps that her husband is not famous, they aren’t regular tabloid targets, and they keep a low profile in general.

  10. LAK says:

I was coming on here to ask after meaning Amarachi before trying to google it, so thanks for doing all the leg work.

At least nothing in the name tells us where baby was conceived nor does it continue the celebrity trend for ridiculous names.

  11. TG says:

If I hear one more stay-at-home mom say the word Madison or McKinsey to their child at the playground I just might screech. Anyway congrats to Kerry on her new baby. She is so gorgeous I just know her daughter will be too.

  12. mercy says:

Congrats to them! Nice that she was able to keep her privacy, but I wouldn’t object to seeing pics if she wants to share. 😉

I’m over Isabella (and all of its variations), but the middle and last names are not common and the three names sound good together.

  13. Damaris says:

Amarachi is so cute for a name.

    • chizoba says:

I think African is too vague. Amarachi is a popular name in Nigeria where it originates from. Her husband is Nigeria and from the igbo tribe

      • LAK says:

It’s well known that there is no such thing as an African, but it’s too exhausting explaining the intricacies, therefore as a catch all, African it is.

      • chisom says:

Hello chizoba. Glad to know a sister is part of celebitchy too.

  14. Kenny Boy says:

Kid names are SO much more diverse than you think these days. I work with kindergarteners, and not a single one has any of the names listed above. In the whole school, there’s only one Madison and one Ella. The only names that are found in multiples are Kayden, Kaylin, Ruby, and Reese.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ruby, really? Wow, that’s n old one. I didn’t know it was in again.

    • Lexie says:

I could actually use some help with this Kenny Boy (and any other teachers out there). I’m due next month and I love the name Ava, but I don’t want her to be in a classroom full of Ava’s. I used to like Isabelle but gave it up for the same reason. Are you seeing a lot of Ava’s too? Sorry to go off topic (congrats Kerry!).

      • Bree bree says:

I love the name Ava (and Eva and Eve!), but in a class of less than 20 students we have an Ava. I don’t know if that is TOO common though!

      • GiGi says:

My oldest is 11 and is an Ava – we hadn’t heard it and she has 7 Ava’s in her grade now… but I don’t know any younger kids named Ava…

      • MollyB says:

There are two Ava’s and one Ave (as in ‘Ave Maria’ not Avenue) in my daughter’s class.

      • Original Lee says:

        Hi Lexie,

Not sure if this is any help, I’m in my mid-twenties and the only interaction I have are with my girlfriend’s children and my family’s children (no kids of my own) and the moms are always saying how common Ava, Madison, and Maddy are. I know three Avas and one Madison (mind you, I know about seven children total).

One of the Ava moms has said there is confusion at times on the playground because a mom will call out Ava and since there are several Avas…well you get where this is going.

That being said – I love the name Ava. I think it’s a really pretty name.

  15. wonderwoman21 says:

Isabelle is a pretty name; Isabel is a family name in my family.

I work in childcare and i meet sooo many kids named Jayden/Jaidon/Jaden/Jaedyn etc. Also many Aidens, Kaydens, Caydences, and even a Zaden.

  16. wiffie says:

We picked Elsa for our daughter born late 2012, because it didn’t end in -Ayden, wasn’t phonetic, made up, or popular in the least, but was still a good classic old name that was beautiful, and a variant of mine.

Fast forward s few months, and the name is in the number one animated movie of all time. It’s stupid, but o was devastated and annoyed. If I wanted trendy, I would have gone trendy, and I really hope it stays obscure through the Frozen craziness. a couple friends near Elsa’s age are Bella and Ella, so I have a feeling that might be common, but old classic names, even when popular, at least are lovely. I can’t get behind all those made up names. That’s just me though.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I hear ya. My best friend picked Sophie (long time ago) because it was her grandmother’s name, then Sophie’s Choice came out and she was annoyed to find a bazillion other Sophies. Not fair.

      Elsa is very pretty.

      • wiffie says:

Thank you! I love Sophie/Sophia, and it was on my short list, along with Olivia, but our rule was no top 100 and they were both in the top five. For good reason though. They’re beautiful names!

    • LAK says:

i was named after a popular actress from the 1920s and so far, very rarely meet anyone with my name. the shortform nickname of my name is remains popular, but not the full long version.

Actually now that i think if it, the only people i meet with the full long version tend to be ladies born pre-1950.

  17. Hissyfit says:

Isn’t there a rumor that her husband is not the baby’s real daddy?
Anyway, congrats to them! Isabelle is such a beautiful name.

  18. jc126 says:

Congrats to them. Beautiful name – it goes well with the last name, too. I’m glad a celebrity couple went with a normal name, not something idiotic.

  19. AlmondJoy says:

Kerry and Nnamdi chose a beautiful name! I have two first graders named Isabel(le) in my afterschool program and my one of my closest friend’s daughter is also named Isabelle.

    Congrats to the lovely couple!

  20. serena says:

LoL more than italian it sounded japanese, anyway I like the name. Congrats!

  21. KateBush says:

I like Isabella beautiful name. But I like Amarachi the best as it’s less common.
Her mauve gown is beautiful too, looks so comfortable.

  22. Janet says:

What is he doing since he retired from football last year? He doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything.

    • jaye says:

Please let’s don’t start painting him with THAT brush. We didn’t even know she had gotten married, there is precious little known about their relationship, so we shouldn’t start assuming he might be a freeloader.

    • Oakbluffsdiva says:

He’s still working with “The Asomugha Foundation” and counting that almost $70 million he made over 11 years in the NFL. The man has Bill Clinton and others on speed dial. He can pretty much do what he wants to do.

  23. Rusty machine says:

I’m super questionable of that baby calculator. I think this sounds about on for shotgun wedding–super shotgun. No hate on her, though. Whatever melts your butter.

    • hethre says:

@Rusty– actually, there is no way she was pregnant when she got married. The longest doctors will let you go before induction is 42 weeks pregnancy–calculated from the first day of your last period. Counting backwards–that puts the first day of her last period, at the earliest, on July 1st. This means she conceived sometime in July (approximately 14 days after her last period started). Telling people their estimated due date is part of my job, so I don’t even have to do the counting anymore, haha.

  24. ogoo says:

glad to see Nnamdi representing Igbo Land. And Nnewi community.congratssss

  25. Nene says:

Amarachi is one of the most common Igbo female names in my tribe -Igbo- in Nigeria.

Congrates to Kerry and her hubby Nnamdi on their new baby girl.

I love the second photo, the deep lavender gown looks really lovely on her.

  26. Bliss says:

Some african words are very similar in sounds and even writing to others in spanish, portuguese and italian.

I knew a lecturer with a typical italian surname when i was in college and i know for a fact that in my parents language his name means…PENIS…hence why all the African students were giggling every time this Italian professor’s name was uttered.

    There goes Professor Penis.

Anyway, congrats to Kerry and Nnamdi.

  27. Tania says:

I love how discreet she is.
