Kristen Stewart in Chanel couture at the 2014 Met Gala: great or too gimmicky?

wenn21320890

I’m not sure that the House of Chanel really had the best night at last night’s Met Gala. Their standard-bearer was… Kristen Stewart. K-Stew wore Chanel Couture (as opposed to that dreadful Dallas collection which she now represents in an ad campaign). Thoughts? Let’s go head to toe. First, I don’t blame her for having bad hair. Her hair is dyed that stupid Manic Panic shade because she’s working on a film in NOLA. The hair couldn’t be helped, and she did the best (“the best”) she could with it.

As for the dress… there’s just too much going on. Too many tricks, too many gimmicks. I tried looking at the dress in just waist-up photos, and I actually kind of liked it. So, I basically want to rejigger this dress into something cleaner and less feathery. I also want to teach Kristen how to pose on a red carpet without making tight fists as a way to self-comfort. PS… I love the shoes.

Lily Allen wore Chanel Couture as well. God, this is so ugly and ancient. It makes Lily look like she’s 50 years old. The hair isn’t helping.

Anna Wintour wore Chanel as well. Wintour kept playing fast and loose with the theme, and many people believed the theme was strictly black-and-white. And then Anna showed up in this colorful frock. I don’t even like it.

I think I’ll just give up now, all of the dresses so far have been terrible.

  2. Tanguerita says:

Lagerfeld should retire. almost everything he makes nowadays is fussy and boderline ridiculous.

    • Maggie says:

“After last year’s punk theme, old-school elegance once again was the order of the evening, as the museum celebrated the opening of its show dedicated to couturier Charles James, with a theme of ‘White Tie and Decorations’.”

White tie for the men means a black tailcoat, a waistcoat, a wing-collared shirt and white bow tie. The women were meant to wear formal ballgowns that echoed the style of Charles James a designer from the 50s. Colours were meant to be garden/spring/jewel-like so black and white was definitely not the theme.

Not many people got it right and certainly not KStew’s horrible dress.

      • TG says:

I don’t understand how they couldn’t get it right. And Vogue was doing all kinds of ball gown features online in their run up to this event. Gosh the opportunity to wear a fabulous ball gown, and outdo a princess gone to waste is mind boggling. I would kill to have that opportunity. Well not really, but you know what I mean.

      • Maya Memsaab says:

Some of the richest, most manufactured and mainstream people on the planet. Oh, and Goop in Pepto Bismol pink. Yes, it was very ‘punk’, last year’s MET gala.

  3. Greata says:

Kristen Stewart, a beautiful girl , but so ungainly, and so arrogantly off- putting.

    • reba says:

      This!!
Please quit scowling at the camera, and learn to stand in high heels.
      Ugh.

      • May says:

        Agreed!

Please someone get her to close her legs! She’s standing like a guy.

  4. Lou says:

Kristen’s makeup looks perfect, I’ll say that much. She looks gorgeous.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I love her hair AND the makeup. The dress is atrocious.

      • joyce says:

Yes, her makeup and hair look great. The dress could be turned into something elegant (on the right person) with the same sparkly top fabric on the bottom instead of the cheap looking net. There are just too many different fabrics going on here.

  5. Black orchid says:

When i saw Kristen’s dress and her Manic panic hair ,all i could think of http://iceage.wikia.com/wiki/Diatryma

  6. GeeMoney says:

Why does Kristen Stewart always look so unhappy and awkward in her photos???

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

Her make up is good and her face is pretty when she smiles

    • Mia4S says:

That was my thought when I saw this dress. As high fashion, yeah it works. But she looks so miserable and awkward it ruins the effect.

  7. Serene says:

Why is Anna Wintour dressed so terrible?? Her outfit last year for the MET was awful as well and this year is no exception. I don’t get it. Isn’t she supposed to be at the forefront of fashion?

    • maybeiamcrazy says:

It is high fashion. We, simple peasants, don’t understand how amazing these horrible looking gowns are. KStew may look like a peacock to us in this dress. But it is actually unique piece of art we commoners don’t get. *sarcasm*

    • Nanea says:

I don’t get it either, seeing that her daughter, who’s the one with the back to AW in that photo, had a more more theme-appropriate dress.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

That’s what I say. Who is she to dictate what looks good? Bleck.

  8. blue marie says:

I don’t really have a problem with her hair, it doesn’t look bad but that dress is a no. I think it would be all right without the sheer skirt or whatever the hell that is at the bottom.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think she’s too petite for that dress, especially the top. It overwhelms her.

  9. Val says:

I don’t know how that woman is supposed to be the big boss at Vogue. She has dreadful taste.

  10. Dani2 says:

I actually like her hair here and the make up is great, the dress is just too busy imo, way too much stuff going on. Karl needs to retire like now.

  11. mfmaefh says:

Kristen looks great,I like the dress on her

    • Rice says:

I like it too. I mean, it’s a costume gala and most of the dresses were way too safe and boring. I think it depends on the eye of the beholder.

      • claire says:

Agreed. This is one of my favorites of the evening. I much prefer these types than some of the safer dresses that were chosen.

    • tracy says:

One of my favorites from the night. Kristen looked happy and confident. I think she, unlike some of the other actresses, loved her dress. Interesting that sites are choosing to use pictures of Kristen not smiling.

      • mimi says:

I saw alot of smiling pics of Kristen on the red carpet but like Robert Pattinson has said in past…the media will always print the unsmiling ones of Kristen even if there are many smiling ones to choose from.

I think she looks great! Love the makeup, hair, dress, shoes. She hung out with one of her oldest, closest friends who was there as well…Riley Keough. I loved the pics the girls’ hair stylist posted on her instagram of Kristen and Riley in pin curls having fun getting ready for the Met Gala. There were also instagram pics of the two girls hanging out with Cara Delevigne and attending Rhianna’s afterparty. It looks like a fun night.

  12. Janet says:

Good lord, did Halloween come early?

  13. Kali says:

No opinion on either Lily or Anna’s dress but (waist up, at least) I absolutely love Kristen Stewart’s dress. From the waist down, it’s another matter entirely… :S

    • QQ says:

Im with you… they should ONLY Have pics pf this Business from the waist up!

    • poppy says:

i’m in the minority here but i like it from the feathers up. the sheer is awful. full feather skirt would have been better.

  14. Lark says:

Anna looks terrible and the dress reminds me of some spring fling type of thing. I actually really like the top of Kristen’s outfit, but the bottom—no. At least it’s better than the awful Dallas collection. Take away the tulle though, and it would be a cute dress for some actress to wear to a premiere. I will say she looked comfortable and wasn’t slouching in the pics I saw on a fashion blog, although the pics Kaiser have certainly don’t show it. Lily looks awful, which is a shame because she can slay at times. I actually like the hair/make up on all three ladies (even Lily’s old lady hair).

The sad thing is, as bad or okay as these dresses may be, they are 100 times better than most of the others. There was some truly hideous fashion (side-eying Lizzie Olsen’s short ice skating outfit with yellow heels and the scary gown Maggie G wore).

  15. lucy2 says:

I liked Kristen’s a lot, didn’t even mind the hair color with it, until I scrolled down and saw the skirt. Yuck.
Lily’s looks like someone pieced together a bunch of scraps last minute.

  16. Illyra says:

    Kristen’s so pretty here!

Don’t like the dress, but whatever.

    • Nicolette says:

The dress is fug for sure, but she looks beautiful. I think she has one of the best complexions, her skin looks flawless.

  17. kingkayski says:

The more i look at Kristens dress the more i like it.Make up is perfect, hairdo is nice the waistline of the dress to die for plus a killer shoe s,i love her ensemble this year.

  18. Sabrina says:

Kristen’s dress would have been perfect for last year’s theme. I quite like her hairstyle.

  19. MourningTheDeathOfMusic says:

Does Anna’s stylist only know one way to cut hair?

  20. Loopy says:

Yes some hosts tell their guest to wear specific colours so only they stand out.

  21. Sighs says:

K-stew looks like she threw on an 80’s sweater and a cummerbund and then wrapped a sequined granny shawl around her waist. Hot.

  22. SamiHami says:

How is Wintour the arbiter of fashion? She just never looks good. She wears that same old wig every day; she’s starting to remind me of those oblivious old men who continue to wear ill fitting toupees; they think they look youthful but they really just look silly.

As for her taste in clothing, she seems to make herself look dated and ridiculous all at the same time.

  23. Tig says:

The top of KS’ dress is OK-the bottom is awful. I totally agree- KL has just quit trying. Don’t get the love for the shoes- pretty basic black stilettos. Points, tho, if she kept them on till she got inside.

And Anna’s daughter looked tons better than either KS or her mom- the ice blue color was so pretty.

  24. AtiaoftheJulii says:

I actually liked her dress and I”m not into Chanel anymore. Many people there certainly didn’t dress the theme or the pictures of the famous didn’t.

  25. faun says:

    “self comfort” LOL

  26. Deb says:

    The apex of fug

  27. Maggi says:

Kristen has a beautiful face and an attractive body shape. That said, I think an unhealthy lifestyle makes her waistline puffy and bloated. She is obviously slim but she doesn’t seem toned in the torso area and it kind of ruins some of the half naked high fashion looks that she tries to pull off.

  28. serena says:

Hate hate Lily Allen’s fugly dress!

I kind of like K-Stew outfit (her make up is always gorgeous, not so much the hair but whatever at least the colour is good) it’s funky and fun but also kinda elegant.

    • tracy says:

She is in the middle of filming a movie, so she has no choice about her hair color. I loved how it was styled. I love Kristen’s look from head to toe.

  29. Longhorn says:

K-stew is a gorgeous girl but she makes everydress she wears look cheap. Designers should take note that if you want your dress to look like crap, put on K-stew.

  30. Helvetica says:

    Love Kristen’s look

  31. Jenna says:

    What the frilly heck…

If I never see another sheer dress bottom again, I would be thrilled. The dress, while busy, could have sorta worked if it just stopped short with the feathers, let the feathers be the ‘thing’ that made it special maybe, it could have possibly worked. A bit. (although I also really hate the new Chanel cartoon element of the boxy top with the strangely nip in waist.)

But I kind dig Lily’s dress. All it would need to be a great look on her would be losing those terrible bows on her shoulders which I completely do not understand AND hack off the bottom that just looks like dust ruffle on a cheap comforter.

As for Anne? I just don’t get it. Or her anymore. Maybe after finally caving and allowing KimK to be on the cover AND to attend for the 2nd time has just destroyed her will to go on?

    • Kosmos says:

Me, too!!! I hate the sheer-bottomed dress, can’t wait until this fad is gone! My, my, I definitely don’t like Wintour’s dress, egad. Maybe my fashion sense just isn’t good, but at first sight, I was a bit shocked! Kristin’s dress, too, nope, nada……and the blue striped number is also pretty bad. Gosh, I think some of the one-color simple dresses look the best at this event.

  32. Melly M says:

I guess the Twihards claim these photos prove she’s pregnant?

  33. Beatrice says:

Kristen’s dress looks like Lagerfeld found a bunch of remnants in the cutting room and said, “Let’s make a dress out of these.”
