Larry Wilmore to replace Stephen Colbert with ‘The Minority Report’: good choice?

One of the things that bothered me about Stephen Colbert leaving The Colbert Report for The Late Show was that industry analysts were getting very bitchy about the talents of The Daily Show’s “correspondents.” The Daily Show has always had a deep bench of comedic talent, from Samantha Bee to Stephen Colbert (in the old days) to Steve Carell, to Nancy Walls to John Oliver to Aasif Mandvi. Some really talented comedians have worked and continue to work for The Daily Show, and people acted like “Oh, what is Comedy Central going to do, they’ve lost Colbert and John Oliver, no one else could take their place.” Well, Comedy Central and Jon Stewart (who executive produced The Colbert Report and will produce what follows) decided to hire in-house for Colbert’s replacement. They went with Larry Wilmore, a comedian known for his wonderful bits on TDS, mostly about race and politics.

Comedy Central has found its heir for The Colbert Report. With host Stephen Colbert departing at the end of the year in preparation for his new show at CBS, the cable network has tapped Larry Wilmore as his replacement, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The 52-year-old writer-actor, who has been with Comedy Central’s The Daily Show as its “Senior Black Correspondent” since 2006, will get the 11:30 p.m. half-hour beginning in January. A twist on the former occupant’s title, the show is called The Minority Report With Larry Wilmore.

April’s announcement that Colbert would take over David Letterman’s vacancy at CBS’ Late Show left a big opening at Comedy Central. The network had lost Daily Show contributor and summer 2013 fill-in John Oliver to a deal at HBO in October.

“We are thrilled to be expanding our relationship with Jon Stewart and Busboy Productions, and are looking forward to the world getting to know Larry Wilmore even better,” said Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless. “He’s a spectacular talent in front of and behind the camera. The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore follows in the Comedy Central tradition – bringing new perspectives to the day’s events and breaking ground in the world of late night television.”

The job means an East Coast move for the L.A.-based Wilmore, who will relocate to New York to tape his new series. “I’m beyond excited to have this chance to continue my relationships with Comedy Central and the brilliant Jon Stewart,” said Wilmore. “I love the city of New York and promise to only wear my Laker t-shirts when I’m layering.”

Wilmore, who is repped by UTA, 3 Arts, and Tom Hoberman, created The Bernie Mac Show and The PJs and has a sprawling TV resume as an executive producer. He was to serve as showrunner of the new ABC sitcom Black-ish, picked up to series on Thursday. He’ll stay on with the Anthony Anderson comedy until a succession plan is in place.

Prior to the February launch of Jimmy Fallon as host of The Tonight Show, which has benefited from hefty buzz and a big marketing push, both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report were late-night’s top performers in the adults 18-49 demographic. Colbert also continued to gain clout over his tenure as Jon Stewart’s lead-out, recently ending The Daily Show’s Emmy streak as outstanding variety show.

In the wake of Colbert’s departure news, a swirl of potential replacements including network breakout Amy Schumer and Daily Show vets Samantha Bee and Aasif Mandvi were floated in the press. Others suggested that the network could slot stalwart Tosh.0 in that time period between Daily Show and Chris Hardwick’s @Midnight. That the cable network ultimately selected a minority, something sorely missing from a late night landscape dominated by white males, is both significant and savvy.

As for Minority Report executive producer Stewart, the neighboring anchor also extended a welcome to Wilmore: “While Larry Wilmore is a brilliant comic and showrunner, this is all just a complicated ruse to get him to move to New York and turn him into a Knicks fan.”

Aasif Mandvi would have been brilliant too – I LOVE Aasif Mandvi. But I really like the choice of Wilmore, for many reasons. One, it is nice to have an African-American comedian hosting his own late-night comedy/variety show. That will be great. Two, I like that Jon Stewart and Comedy Central chose an ADULT. You know? He’s not some fresh-faced kid who doesn’t know what’s going on. Wilmore is an adult, he’s been in the business forever, he knows how to work behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Plus, he’s just really funny. I would imagine that The Minority Report will do their own formula rather than try to copy Colbert’s success with his “angry conservative” persona on The Colbert Report.

I think it’s an excellent choice.

    • Stormsmama says:

Agreed. This is brilliant and I’m excited to see what he (and his team) come(s) up with

    • MollyB says:

Me, too. Larry Wilmore is super intelligent and hilarious, with a long history in the business as a writer and performer. I think he will do great.

  4. phaksi says:

Great choice, but Im still sad that Stephen is gonna go from interviewing artists, authors and scientists to Kardashians and Real Housewives and the like

    • Lilacflowers says:

Really? Letterman interviews authors, scientists, politicians, musicians, and actors. Why would Colbert take a step down in the booking department when he takes over?

  5. Adrien says:

Yeah, why not? I was hoping it would be John Oliver who is doing a good job on his excellent but too short HBO show. I can’t wait to watch Wilmore.

  6. Blannie says:

I would have preferred Aasif Mandvi myself. I love that guy. Or Rob Riggle. But I’ll watch Larry to see how it goes…I’m going to miss Stephen. No one can replace his brilliance in the Colbert Report.

  7. poppy says:

nobody will ever outshine colbert but he’s an excellent choice if they tweak the show to suit his style and the writing stays good.

  8. Ag says:

good news! i look forward to watching him, i wonder what he’ll do with the show.

  9. smee says:

He’s funny and smart. ITA that he’s an “adult” and not a young & trendy choice. It would have been GREAT if they had chosen a woman……hopefully Samantha B will get more air time.

  10. Jess says:

I love him so I’m happy with this choice, even though I also love Aasif and Samantha (we need a woman in the late night mix up!) But Arsenio is still hosting a late night show, right? I feel like he just totally gets forgotten about in these conversations. We definitely need more African-Americans, other minorities, and women on TV and on late night, but sometimes the conversation about this issue make me think poor Arsenio is just being completely disregarded.

    • JLM says:

Agree – I’m disappointed that it’s 2014 and there are still no female late night hosts.

  11. Mich says:

I think it is an awesome choice! I’ll definitely be watching.

  12. mia girl says:

I’m very excited about this. I think he’s great.

Comedy Central and Jon Stewart (my crush!) could have taken many different approaches… the fact that they went with Wilmor who will look at the news through racial/ethnic/minority prism says a lot. It is much needed.

And while they didn’t go young with their host they are going young with the substance of the show because it’s millenials/youth who are most likely to be living a multicultural reality.

  13. ldsfj says:

Aasif would have been the better choice. He continually cracks me up!

  14. taylor says:

I love them all (Aasif, Samantha and Larry) and would have loved a female host, but I think this is a great pick. He is an adult, which is really nice, and his bits on TDS have always been fantastic.

  15. wheezy says:

I will miss Colbert for sure- but this is a great choice, he is really funny and and excellent writer

  16. Jana says:

Thank God for Jon Stewart, and all The Daily Show reporters…they are now going to rule late night television!

  17. Deedee says:

Yes! I will miss Stephen Colbert and his alter ego, but love Larry! He is such a trip!
