Robert Pattinson’s VF interview: ‘I’m kind of like, way too sensitive to criticism’

One of my favorite qualities found in Robert Pattinson is his ability to give a charming interview. Seriously. Whatever else you can throw at him, Sparkles is consistently funny, charming and humble in interviews, and his profiles and Q&As are always great reads. While Rob was in Cannes to promote Maps to the Stars and The Rover, he gave a lengthy interview to Vanity Fair, which you can read in its entirety here. Some highlights:

Famous as a teenager: “I did Harry Potter when I was like 17, and nothing really happened after that. I mean, I made loads of money compared to anyone my age—it was incredible. But I mean, then I just did little TV things afterwards. But I got to live from 18 to 21, you get your own apartment and basically I didn’t star in Twilight until 21. It’s different because you’re still young, but you’ve had a life beforehand. Where as if you are 10, it’s a totally different thing.”

Child stardom today: “When you see these kids, there is only one way: you either get in therapy now or become a serial killer, or kill yourself. I mean, you can see it really early on—it’s terrifying.”

Justin Bieber: “I’ve met him before, though, on his party bus. I’ve met him a couple of times. He’s all right.”

Whether he thinks the apocalypse is coming: “Um, not really. Probably because I’m just quite ignorant and I have a nice life. I think everything is quite cyclical. There are definitely some incredibly worrying things—and for the sake of what? So you can play video games all day? It’s kind of ridiculous.”

The backlash of making fun of Hollywood in Maps to the Stars: “I don’t think we were really making fun of it. Though I like how basically the only bad review we got was from The Hollywood Reporter…I don’t really think it’s taking the piss out of Hollywood. It’s very specific [to these characters].”

Whether he’s working on an album: “I don’t know where that came from. Every few years, something comes out about that. I’m always trying to work on stuff, but I don’t know. I’m kind of like, way too sensitive to criticism; I’ve got enough criticism on one front.”

[From Vanity Fair]

Rob is so polite, he won’t even make fun of Justin Bieber! But Rob has been on Bieb’s “party bus.” Why isn’t there footage of THAT? Also: I love this quote – “I’m kind of like, way too sensitive to criticism.” Totally, like, he sounds like K-Stew.

Rob also gave a great interview to USA Today. One of my favorite quotes, about his residual Twihard fame: “It’s strange. I have a disassociation now. It’s odd to live that same life. But I have always had that disassociation. I’ve never understood the crowds screaming. This is a job.” I kind of think that this is the year Rob has finally made his peace with his stardom, especially now that he can work on smaller projects that he believes in.

Rob seems like a sweet guy but my first thought here is that he doesn’t look like he is ageing well does he? I wonder if is he looking after himself? Or maybe its just the hair?

    • blue marie says:

I dunno, I think he has looked better lately than he has in a while.

      • LadyMTL says:

I agree, I think he’s maturing nicely…growing into his looks and etc. I never found him remotely attractive before but now there’s something quite dashing about him.

      • Lucy says:

I think he’s more confident now, and feels a lot more comfortable in his own skin. He used to be extremely insecure when he was younger.

      • Belle says:

I agree as well, he looks much better than he has in a long time… he even looks clean! 😉

      • elisa says:

Me too! I think he looks great! But I’ve always loved him despite Twilight. I wish he would grow his hair just a little, a very little – but that’s it. He’s gorgeous to me.

  2. Easi says:

He’s looking better than he did a year ago.

  3. Diana says:

Yes, he gives the best interviews all the time. He is funny and self deprecating and always comes across as humble and smart. Does it show too much that I love him? he’s the best and I am really happy he’s getting the great reviews both of his movies are gathering. Cannes really agrees with him.

  4. redsox says:

I like him. He seems like a good guy.

  5. Lara says:

I’ve always liked him – guess I always will unless he turns into a jerk. And yes, he is definitely gorgeous. Still.

  6. DenaDe says:

Poor Rob. Suffers from a chronic case of British Male Rapid Aging syndrome.

This what happens when you think Brits are hot. Their hotness doesn’t last. At least bb James Mcavoy is still pretty.

  7. Red32 says:

I can’t stand Twilight, but I think Rob Pattinson is adorable. He doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously.

    • Leftovers says:

He’s British. British people do not tend to take themselves too seriously, and that’s fantastic.

  8. Esmom says:

I’ve always had a soft spot for him and still do. I like how cognizant of how surreal life as a celeb can be, and how grateful he seems to be to have been given the opportunities he has.

    • OriginalCrystal says:

‘and how grateful he seems to be to have been given the opportunities he has.’

Yeah, I’m not a fan of him or that ex gf of his but they seemed really grateful for the opportunities they were given. People seem to think that they hated ‘twilight’ or some sh-t but I don’t see how.

    • mia girl says:

@OC. I think people may confuse his mocking of Twilight over the years with him beng ungrateful for the opportunity. Speaking of mocking and you slowly warming up to him, I’ve always liked this piece…

Anyway, I agree and never thought he was ungrateful. In his recent interviews from Cannes he said he can work with all these auteur directors now because of Twilight (enough fame where they will take a meeting) and he doesn’t have to worry about money.

  9. Lucy says:

He’s so lovely. I’m glad to see he’s doing so well!

  10. Dani says:

I’m still not over Cedric Diggory.

That said, he’s definitely the type of cries during/after sex. But he is pretty handsome lately.

    • Lucy says:

      Is anyone over Cedric, though?

    • Courtney says:

I’m going to have that picture in my head (Sparkles crying during/after sex) every time I see or hear about him from now on. Can’t get that one out of my head. Thanks Dani 🙂

  11. OriginalCrystal says:

Damn…that first pic. he’s looking pretty rough. He had a moment right after the mini cooper incident, when he was promoting that Cronenberg abomination, where he looked so fine. Now….

Anyway, his interviews are cute. I’m not a fan of him or JLaw but they’re both just so cute and honest in their interviews. He seems like a decent person.

I can’t believe I’ve just written a nice comment about Rob…Ugh, maybe I’m coming down with something *feels forehead*

    • Anname says:

I don’t know, but I think you are slowly but surely becoming a Rob fan…. just give in and enjoy it! 🙂

    • blue marie says:

ha ha OC, you might want to get that checked out before it spreads.
(I laugh but I have nothing bad to say about him either)

  12. Anname says:

Somewhere on youtube there is video of Rob and Shannon Woodward getting on the Bieber bus. The doors closed before they got on (security jumped the gun), and Rob is laughing his head off. I think he thought the whole experience of “the Bieber bus” was very amusing. I bet Rob doesn’t really think Bieber is “alright”, but what his he supposed to say? He was very diplomatic-always the best way to go.

    • tinyjones says:

Actually that excerpt about bieber that kaiser posted missed the massive shade Rob threw. There was a lot of laughing that they didn’t transcribe from Rob, and it sounds like after he made the comment about child stars, serial killers or killing themselves, he was asked about Bieber..he cracked up — they asked him “did you meet Bieber he was at the vanity Fair party?” Rob went into how he had met him before. But was chuckling. It was definite shade.

I also remember bieber when younger and right after twilight came out was like name dropping Rob like he had a crush. Rob thought he was weird as f and said so. Lol

  13. Jess says:

He’s just all around adorable! He comes off as really genuine and sweet. I actually think he’s a good actor too, I saw him in a few things other than twilight and he’s got the skills, excited to see where he goes next.

  14. Ray says:

IMO He is pretty thick skinned and if he stays away from stew he would probably come to enjoy his fame instead of complaining about itr all the time.

    • tinyjones says:

On good authority they are still together in a big way. He doesn’t complain about fame, I think they loathe the gossip and tabloid press/papz and don’t mind saying so. They have a right to express hating the intrusive b.s. they put up with.

      • Courtney says:

Why does anyone think they’re still together? Honestly, I don’t get it.

  15. Claudia says:

I really like him. He seems genuine and down to earth. I’m happy for him the way his career is now going after Twilight and I wish him only good things.

  16. Nibbi says:

Gaaahh that header pic is terrible !!! i always think he is adorable, gorgeous, and charming, but there he looks like matthew perry post-Friends !!
I don’t think he’s aging well at all. Maybe it’s the English pale-skin genes or more likely all the hard partying, but if he was a chick we’d be tearing those 20-something eye wrinkles APART.

    • tinyjones says:

You’re doing a good job of tearing him apart yourself. Lol maybe it’s just a bad pic. Or too much alcohol and late nights in the south of France. It was only a few months ago some here were salivating over his dior spread and events. ..now he’s ancient? Come now.

  17. MeganDraper says:

I’m sure he misses what he had with Kristen but he’s doing so much better without her. I think people would hassle him more when he was with her since she’s so polarizing. He’s funny and smart in interviews and not a jerk.

    • tinyjones says:

Pretty good authority they’re still together. I think your reaction is why they’re choosing to not advertise themselves in that way…women covet him and as usual hate their lust objects significant other with irrational extreme passion. They know this. They know the press they incur has nothing to do with their work, which is why they’ve figured out its best to stay on the dl if they want serious established careers. But they are as together, moreso, than they ever were. People will see how much in a few months.

      • Dane says:

Blah, blah, blah she’s STILL pregnant right? You robsten loons have been saying that since October. You guys all claimed she was due in April, then you all said May and now your pushing it back a few more months. We have one of you guys popping up here saying the exact same BS every few weeks all claiming yourselves to be “insiders” but, as usual, don’t have and don’t give a shred of proof. May I ask why YOUR claims are so much more valid than the many others?
