Real Housewives of Atlanta husband Apollo Nida gets 8 years for identity theft, fraud

What is it with the shady characters on these Real Housewives shows? Do those shows just attract morally bankrupt social-climbers who will do whatever it takes to live extravagant lifestyles off other people’s backs? Joe and Teresa Giudice of The Real Housewives of NJ are facing steep jail sentences on multiple federal fraud charges. Their sentencing date has been moved to September due to the death of Joe’s father last month.

Now Apollo Nida, the husband of Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Phaedra Parks, has received a federal sentence of 8 years after pleading guilty to various counts of fraud. He will have to serve 5 years of probation following his sentence and pay some form of restitution, which is to be determined. Nida reportedly gave information to the feds that reduced his sentence to a fourth of what he was facing. He ran a huge identity theft and money laundering scheme. Nida would target victims, cash their government checks and take out fake car loans in their names from his own shell company. It sounds like a sophisticated operation that hurt countless people:

According to reports from HLN news correspondents, the star will serve nearly eight years in prison with voluntary surrender at a later date.

Nida’s troubles first came to light in January, when he was charged with bank fraud and identity theft. According to a written affidavit, Nida created fake companies, enabling him to access databases to find individuals to rip off. He opened fake bank accounts under those real names and funneled stolen U.S. Treasury checks and auto loan proceeds into those accounts.

He also allegedly opened a fake auto dealership and applied for auto loans in the names of stolen identities.

After months of talking with prosecutors, Nida entered a guilty plea in May, paving the way for his sentencing today.

In multiple exclusive interviews over the past few months, Nida told Radar he was staying positive despite his legal struggles.

“I appreciate everyone [reaching out],” he said just days before the sentencing.

But Nida isn’t exactly out of the woods just yet. As Radar reported, one of his homes was recently sold at public auction after he failed to pay the bills.

Radar also reports that Nida and Phaedra are predictably having trouble in their marriage, and that they haven’t been seen together in weeks. When he pled guilty in May, Nida claimed that he felt pressure to keep up with his wife, who as a reality star was earning more than he was. He said “I was doing it to sustain a lifestyle.” No kidding.

I doubt that whatever restitution this guy has to pay will put a dent in the damage that he did to his victims. From what I’ve heard it’s very difficult to recover from identity theft and it can be a frustrating process trying to clear a damaged credit report. Identity theft can devastate people’s lives. So can other financial forces beyond their control. I wish that the government would have gone after the executives and companies responsible for the financial crisis like they’re prosecuting these mid level career criminals. Of course these type of cases are much more cut and dried and limited in scope.

    Um, yes. Exactly this.

    • mimif says:

Totally this. In fact I think that should be the definition of reality TV in a nutshell. KUWTK, anyone?

  2. Abbott says:

Maybe Andy Cohen is is the lead on a really elaborate FBI sting to catch career criminals? And they are all non the wiser. Mwahahaha!

  3. NewWester says:

Handsome man, he will make lots of friends in prison

    • lem says:

      considering he’s already been there…

    • Maria says:

Because nothing is funnier than criminals in jail being violated, right?

Back to the story, I’m glad he’s getting eight years, he deserves it; I empathize with the victims in this…

    • Sam says:

I don’t think he’ll enjoy his time there. One of the things the article left out was that he was originally facing 30 years but got only 8 – largely because he cooperated with the feds and gave up other people who were involved. So now he’s a stool pigeon too! Nothing seems to evoke prisoner rage more than having a known Rat in their midst.

      • Tammy says:

He’s going to federal prison, not state.

      • Sam says:

Tammy: how does that matter? Federal prisoners are full of mobsters, racketeers and other guys who don’t take kindly to rats either. Federal prison is not a cakewalk.

I really have to wonder how much she knew about his activities.

    • Jenna says:

Considering she is a lawyer? I’m both shocked she managed to escape being charged as well while also sorta figuring that, as a lawyer, yeah I’m sure she knew how to maintain enough distance to enjoy the fruits of her husband’s criminal activity while still being able to claim innocence and surprise when he was finally caught.

People living above their means. Reality TV just show how many people are fronting their lives. I think people that have good money and are very secure are not the ones flaunting their so called wealth. Which is why when these shows end we see the true lives of these people. ‘

He is an idiot. He had a woman that took a chance on him. 2 adorable sons and he went back to the same life of crime.

    wasted opportunities.

    • Mel M says:

Exactly! I’ve lived in 3 different states in the Midwest and on the south side of Chicago and there are those people everywhere. People that have massive credit card debt so they can have that house in the perfect suburb with the luxury vehicle in the driveway and their kids all have iPhones, iPads, and clothes from Abercrombie kids and Matilda Jane.

    • ParisPucker says:

This. He’s absolute scum. All of these people have a pretty low level of intelligence and yet they make money off of this very fact. Am glad he’s getting his comeuppance – one well deserved. What is wrong with people?!??

  6. Tiffany27 says:

I’m pretty sure Phaedra knew about this.

    • Britt says:

I agree. They would have to be pulling some high-level secret ops mission in order for her not to know.

    • bcgirl says:

omg, thanks for being the first to say so. I wonder why nobody is asking about that. He seems too dumb (on the show) to come up with such a scheme. A lawyer could access all of that information much more easily.

  7. Talie says:

He didn’t need to keep up with Phaedra — she was always going to be the breadwinner. It’s just sad that he is now leaving behind two kids after he got a second chance to rebuild his life.

  8. Stella says:

Justice has been served!! Hope this mean we can expect the hammer to come down HARD on the Giducis too!! Ohhh I hope so!!!! SO tired of the Real Housewives flaunting their over-the-top lifestyles yet many of them are scamming to keep up their richy-rich lifestyle. I think that many of them have money troubles and are so obsessed with the show and the lifestytle, they thin k they are above the law.

    • lem says:

to be fair, I never felt that Phaedra flaunted her lifestyle. In fact, it seemed to me that she was one of the few that was constantly showing how hard she did work (between the law firm and the mortuary schooling, she seemed to actually be legitimate career-oriented). HE seemed like he wanted to prove how much money he had, but I didn’t get that from her. The only ridiculously over the top thing she ever seemed to do were her children’s birthday parties.

  9. mimi says:

I have no idea who this person is because I don’t watch any of those Real Housewives “reality” shows. Isn’t another husband from the New York or is it the New Jersey show also facing a prison sentence for illegal wrongdoings with money? Smh in disgust at these greedy people.

  10. Cupcake says:

    What a dick.

  11. Elizabeth says:

There will be no “treating him as a stool pidgeon” or “making friends because he’s handsome” going on. He was sentenced to under 10 years for a nonviolent crime therefore he will go to either a low security or a prison camp. Those places while not fun in the least are not violent, not filled with gang wars, not filled with guys waiting to jump you or anything like the prisons you are thinking of. He will be miserable but he will not be in physical danger.

    • Jayna says:

Because of his past criminal convictions he’s being put in a higher level Federal prison, but I think it’s medium security, not the minimum security he would get if this was his first offense, but still way better than a State prison or maximum security in Federal prison. The Tamara Tattles website broke down his whole sentence. In reality he was facing 18 to 15.5 years. He did a lot of snitching it appears and got it knocked down by like I think she said eight years. Then his lawyer got him into that coveted drug rehab program, which knocks like eight months or something off of your sentence. Then then time I think you can get out a little early added on. Then sometimes six months of the sentence in a halfway house at the end. He could be out in like 5 and a half years or something like that. I can’t remember the full details of what she said.

Knowing Phaedra, I’d think she’s been plotting since the sh*t hit the fan to get herself out of this marriage without having to pay him alimony and limited visitation/custody of the children. But then again, she was dumb enough to marry him in the first place, he knew how to play hard the role of the chivalrous southern gentleman and that must have melted her panties. There was an episode of RHOA where they were arguing (in the Carribbean) because Kenya was cozying up to him at the bar and Phaedra walked in on them. He threw a tantrum like a 5 yr old brat and wouldn’t even walk her back to their hotel room. I remember thinking then she had an “Oh crap, what have I married?” look on her face because he wasn’t treating her like the southern belle she styles herself to be. I hope her sons have good role models.
