Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger

Heath Ledger very deservingly won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The nominees also included Josh Brolin for Milk, Robert Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder, Philip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt, and Michael Shannon for Revolutionary Road. Ledger was considered a shoe-in since he won Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes and The Critics Choice Awards. Director Christopher Nolan accepted Heath’s award on both occasions. Dark Knight producer Charles Roven accepted Ledger’s BAFTA, and co-star Gary Oldman accepted his SAG Award.

Heath’s family accepted the award on his behalf, which will eventually go to his young daughter Matilda when she turns 18. Before the ceremony, father Kim Ledger remarked that he might say a few words. Though he didn’t feel 100% certain Heath would win, he seemed cautiously optimistic.

Heath Ledger’s father, Kim, will be at Sunday’s Academy Awards. If his son wins best supporting actor for playing the Joker in ” The Dark Knight,” the elder Ledger said, “I may say a few words,” usmagazine.com reports.

Kim Ledger said he’s honored by his son’s nomination. “I’m extremely proud,” he told tmz.com, but added: “You can’t expect to win something like this. [The Academy] could just as easily turn left, as [it] could go right.” Being at the Oscars ceremony will be “bittersweet, obviously,” Ledger said. He wouldn’t say whether Ledger’s former fiancee Michelle Williams would be attending.

Nevertheless, Kim Ledger said he isn’t 100 percent sure of his son’s chances. “You can’t take anything for granted,” he said.

[From Newsday]

During his speech, Kim Ledger noted: “It’s very humbling, just being amongst such wonderful people and such a wonderful industry.” He then thanked the Academy, Warner Brothers, and Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan. He noted that Nolan allowed Heath “the creative freedom to explore the role. This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath’s determination to be accepted by you, his peers.”

Heath’s mom, Sally Bell said “Heath was such a compassionate and generous soul. We have been truly overwhelmed by the honor and respect.” She noted that although it was a sad day, they were choosing to celebrate what he achieved.

Heath’s sister Kate Ledger ended the family’s acceptance by revealing that she and Heath had hoped he might win an Oscar for his role. “We even talked about being here on this very day. We proudly accept this award on behalf of your beautiful Matilda.”

Obviously the award comes as no surprise, but that isn’t due to Ledger’s tragic death a year ago. He gave an incredible performance as the Joker – easily the highlight of his career. Roger Ebert explained it beautifully, noting that Ledger brought humanity to the demonic character, and elevated him into something more than just a cartoon brought to life.

I expect the late Heath Ledger to win the Oscar for best supporting actor for “The Dark Knight,” but I’m not choosing his performance as the “most elevating” out of sympathy. It was elevating for an entirely separate reason: He transformed the character of the Joker, who we thought we knew so well, into a suffering, haunted being, stripped of all emotion except for ruthless self-pity…

I found I pitied him, was moved by his cry for help. And yes, perhaps I was moved, after all, by the knowledge that this would be Heath Ledger’s last performance. You can’t watch the movie without thinking that. And it is so brave, so exhausting, so giving of self, so willing to give voice to the Joker’s pain, that it reached me deeply.

[From Chicago Sun Times]

Congratulations to Heath, Matilda, and the rest of the Ledger family. I’m certain that if he were alive, he’d still be picking up the award after such a stellar performance.

A very deserving win. I know some people see it as a sympathy nomination – I disagree. If he hadn’t died, I’d still have fully expected him to be nominated (whether he’d have won or not is more up to debate, although I’d still have put my betting money on him).

But it truly was an amazing, chilling performance – such a huge, integral piece of what made the film – and IMO he fully deserved to win.

  2. Jess says:

It was an incredible performance…I was truly blown away by how deeply he got into that character.

Very much deserved. He is still and will always be missed.

Uh… you alright Jaybird? Heath played the Joker, not the Riddler.

  4. Rosanna says:

Sympathy win. The story of the Oscars is full of stellar performances who didn’t get an award, mainly because the performer didn’t die in a timely fashion.

  5. dd says:

Well deserved. He was an amazing actor.

Dammit I wish he could have been there. He earned it. That was one of the most powerful performances I’ve ever seen, and being a huge Batman geek, that’s hard to earn. I honestly thought Nicholson didn’t understand the darkness in the Joker, while Ledger completely understood it, ran with it, and made something brilliant. Well done.

    Baby you did it!
    We love you!
    And miss you terribly

Ledger was 1/3 of the reason why I left the theater shaking after I saw TDK for the first time. The other 2/3 go to the rest of the elements of the movie and the end scene with Gordon’s family and Dent, respectively.

  9. lilirose says:

He completely deserves the awards! He took my breathe away! he embodies the joker so well! He was the next Marlon Brando…he had such a potential.

  10. CB Rawks says:

His family gave lovely speeches. It was very moving.

  11. Chiara says:

Striking and unnerving performance by Heath in TDK.

I still think, over time, his performance in Brokeback Mountain will be the most remembered.

How lovely for Matilda to eventually have this as part of her dad.

  12. Megan says:

    Agreed Rosanna lol

  13. Jojo says:

Easily one of the greatest performances of all time.

  14. Todd H says:

There’s no way he would have won and he probably wouldn’t even have been nominated if he hadn’t have passed away. I agree it was a great performance and I saw the movie three times before buying the DVD…but (IMO) it wasn’t a oscar-winning performance.

  15. Troy says:

A big posthumous congrats to Ledger. I wouldn’t call the man ‘brilliant’ per se, but his portrayal of the Joker in the Dark Knight was surely mind numbing, keeping your attention in every scene he was in.

  16. Trillion says:

Chiara I agree. Brokeback should’ve won best picture that year, and Heath could’ve easily gotten an Oscar for his work in it. He is unsettling amazing in TDK as well, but the role is not as “Oscar-y” as others.

  17. Maritza says:

No one was surprised that he won, totally expected!

  18. I Choose Me says:

So, so happy he won, even if I do agree that his performance in Brokeback Mountain was more Oscar-worthy. Heath you will never be forgotten.

  19. the original kate says:

oh man, the scene in brokeback mountain with heath at jake’s boyhood home always moves me to tears, epsecially when he embraces the bloody shirt…i bawl like a baby every time. he was a great actor who was just getting started. too bad we won’t get to see what else he could have done.

this is gonna sound silly but i LOVE LOVE LOVED

  21. Christina says:

AHEM..as i was saying… i loved robert downey jr in tropic thunder. i saw the movie midway and would not believe my brother that it was robert downey jr in that role. it took a long long time to convince me and i was completely amazed…
