Taylor Swift versus Katie Holmes: who looked the best at ‘The Giver’ premiere?

FFN_GG_TheGiver_Prem_081114_51500182

Here are some photos from last night’s premiere of The Giver. From what little I know of this movie, it involves a society that gives people drugs so they can’t see colors or feel all the feelings, and something about the color red is very significant. Like, when people stop taking the drugs and start reading books, they see all the colors. Thus, most of the ladies wore something red to the premiere. It actually works – there seems to be some kind of theme and all of the women complement each other very well.

First, Taylor Swift wore this Monique Lhuillier Resort 2015 gown with Casadei pumps in that beige-y nude that is so popular these days. I guess I’m happy that they aren’t nude LK Bennetts or Louboutins, but still… Swifty didn’t bring her shoe game for the premiere. As for the Lhuillier dress… this makes me a prude, I know, but I’ve always had an aversion to wearing darker colors on top of lighter colors. Like, I hate it when people wear white pants and a black shirt. I just have a knee-jerk reaction to it – the darker color should always go on the bottom. But that’s just me. It’s a lovely dress and it feels very vintage-y to me, like this is a revamped debutante dress from the 1950s.

Next up: Katie Holmes in Zac Posen, with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. Zac Posen usually isn’t my favorite designer, but I like this. I like the constructed bust and the fabric train at the shoulders, in the back. The color is pretty and Katie’s makeup looks great. I was going to say that her hair is the worst part but now that I’m looking at it… it’s not that bad, really. I like that she pulled it up and styled it. Her hair is better than Swifty’s, in any case.

Here are some of the other stars of the film, including leads Odeya Rush and Brenton Thwaites, plus Jeff Bridges (with wife Susan) and Meryl Streep.

Meryl looks the best followed by Katie Holmes. I want to see this I’ve heard it’s a good book.

    • ichsi says:

Agreed that Meryl looks best, I love the shoes on her. But they all look lovely.

      • Dorothy#1 says:

Yeah, the shoes are really nice, they make her legs look amazing! I also like that at her age she dresses in something “comfortable” but still really flattering!!

      • Lauren says:

Meryl looks better than everyone. She is confident and immensely talented. Katie and Swifty always look like try – hards. Tired of them. Meryl is immortal.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Meryl looks like she had fun getting dressed and is comfortable in what she is wearing and it just makes her shine.

    • megs283 says:

The book is amazing – unfortunately, I don’t think the movie will do it justice. Color does play a very important role (though not quite the same as Kaiser described) and I believe the movie fiddles with that. Also, the main characters should be a lot younger – their youth in the book plays a large part in their decisions.

The book is a SUPER quick read – maybe 3 or 4 hours? And I definitely recommend it!!

(And despite my critiquing, you can bet I’ll see the movie. haha.)

ETA – I just read the interview that CR posted below and I’m feeling more positive about the movie!

    • L says:

Seconded that the books is awesome. And the movie just won’t be the same (like megs though will totally see it)

It’s part of a loosely tied 4 book series, but it is 100% worth the reading.

      • Dorothy#1 says:

Thanks!! I will look for it today! I just finished The Handmaids Tale by Margret Atwood. Which I highly recommend!!

    • Catriona says:

Jeff Bridges looks the best!! 🙂 But I’m biased because I am in love with him. 🙂

But if we’re going with women, I agree. Meryl does look the best. 🙂 Style and game-face, she wins

      • Sarah says:

Taylor Swift looks like she is doing a pose-hard – “look at me, I’m posing!”. Too much effort. Meryl’s natural grace shines through.

    • Brittney B says:

The book is still one of my absolute favorites (and I’m a writer/longtime book lover who doesn’t read YA fiction). But everything that made it compelling (for me) is completely impossible to film. I’ll watch it to see how they did it, but if you haven’t read it yet… I strongly, STRONGLY suggest doing that first.

My boyfriend hates reading for pleasure, but he finished it one afternoon (the only book he’s finished in five years). I know literary fans always cry “the movie won’t do it justice”, but without giving anything away… *reading* the book’s twists is rendered meaningless by *watching* the scenes unfold first.

  2. Dani2 says:

Tay’s dress should have been shorter imo. And her hairstyle is giving me very faint Trumpish vibes, other than that, she looks great.
Katie’s look is definitely my favourite here.

    • Down and Out says:

Agreed, Katie looks the best. These photos make her look vaguely like Natalie Portman to me. I mean that in the best way–glowing skin, classic style, great makeup.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I don’t know if I have seen Katie look better. She usually wears things that have a bad fit, but this works so well on her figure. She needs to spike a football or do a mic drop or something! Victory, FINALLY!

  3. Tiffany27 says:

They look like they’re going to the Cotillion. I love Jeff Bridges though.

  4. in_theory says:

Can I pick the woman in the middle as best-looking, Odeya Rush, is it? Holmes looks bland, and Swift annoys me with her cuteness. Rush looks like she was pissed at something, though.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I can’t believe Odeya Rush is 17! She looks like she has no joy in her, which is kind of odd for someone so young. Maybe she is doing Blue Steel for the carpet, but for me it stands out in a bad way that the two ladies on either side of her are smiling, and Odeya is glaring. She looks gorgeous, though.

    • I Choose Me says:

She’s my pick too. Love everything about the gown but agree her overall look would have been improved by a smile.

  5. Lulu says:

I actually really like swifty’s outfit. She is somehow both true to her own girly style, but this also seem very moderny at the same time

    • Sugar says:

I think Taylor looks really nice, too.

Also, darker colors shouldn’t always be on the bottom. It all depends on your body shape. If you’re pear-shaped then lighter on the bottom is completely wrong for your body. However, it looks great on some body types, like mine. I’m bigger on the top than the bottom and frequently wear white pants to balance out my broad shoulders. In fact, I’m wearing white pants and a dark top right now. It’s all about knowing what looks right on your body, not following silly “rules” that don’t apply to you.

  6. Abbott says:

That Brenton Thwaites kid has better hair than all of them. Wow… he’s…. wow.

  7. Ickythump says:

Taylor’s either got gorgeous skin or a fabulous makeup artist. Not really a fan of Katie’s look it’s a bit I dunno… Ballerina-ish!

  8. hutter says:

Susan Bridges is such a beauty!

  9. Audrey says:

Meryl is showing them how it’s done

  10. Falula says:

It’s based on the Lois Lowry novel, which is one of my favorite young adult books of all time!

I only know this movie exists because I saw a poster up at my local movie theater. I hadn’t seen any press about it.

  11. Len says:

I so agree about dark having to be on bottom!

    • ozmom says:

Len, I’m so bummed and confused! I wore my new awesome white ankle jeans with a black shirt last week & thought I was so cool. So what should I wear with my white jeans? Or should people not wear white jeans? Serious questions, I’m not being snarky. I’m no fashion plate and need suggestions, please.

  12. Allie says:

I absolutely love the book but the trailers for this make me so mad. It looks like they’re trying to stay in the ‘hunger games’ frame of mind instead of staying true to the book. Ugh.

    • cr says:

They’re aware of the negative reaction to the first trailer:

Lowry: They were easier to make, I think. I mean, they may have been more expensive to make, but they had a lot more action. The book of “The Giver” is a pretty introspective, quiet sort of book compared to, say, “The Hunger Games.”
      Q. I do remember that when the trailer for “The Giver” came out, a lot of fans were upset because it looked reminiscent of “The Hunger Games.”
Thwaites: They did show the most “Hunger Games”-y looking part of the film.
Lowry: And also they were outraged because the first trailer was completely in color, and I think the filmmakers had not realized the passion on the part of the fans who wanted that black-and-white [from the book]. And of course, they’d always planned to have it in black-and-white. They just hadn’t thought to put it in the first trailer.
Thwaites: The [fans] want what the book represents. It was almost like they wanted the original story, not the “Hunger Games” stuff. Which was kind of a relief and surprising to us.

    • L says:

Apparently, they’ve also said it’s really a combination of the first two books in the series-The Giver and Gathering Blue.

      • starrywonder says:

Ahh good. I loved the Giver and will need to go back and re-read the second one since I faintly remember it.

    • cubfan34 says:

Bridges and author Lois Lowry are going to be on the Colbert Report Tuesday, August 26.

  13. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I love Monique Lhuillier, but Taylor’s dress looks like she made it herself. Nobody wins this round.

  14. Ag says:

jeff bridges and his wife – freaking adorable and sharp-looking.

i like swift’s dress, but katie’s, not so much.

  15. Linn says:

I don’t like Meryl’s Top but the rest all look nice. Good to see some nice outfits after the TCAs.

  16. Chinoiserie says:

I like all the dresses suprisingly (except what Meryl is wearing). The girl in red would looked the best if she had happier expression.

  17. PHD gossip says:

I am certain Swifty is wearing a wig. Her hair is thinner.

  18. Anne says:

    I love Taylor’s dress. It’s so pretty. But what’s with Odeya’s face?

  19. Nikki says:

Nope. I ADORE Meryl, but she could do more with her hair, really, and the fit of her top is way too grandmumsy. I wish she’d get a fierce new look, though with her strength and awesomeness, everything else is a bit superfluous!

  20. Kiddo says:

Swift looks like a mannequin in that shot. I don’t mind the cut of Katie’s dress, but I think the color is bland and the shoes don’t work with it, for me.

  21. Marianne says:

First of all, I kind of like how matchy poo poo everyone was. I’m sure it wasn’t planned but its kind of nice. Anyway, I think the best dressed was Odeya.

  22. Josephine says:

Huh, surprised people liked Katie’s look. I think she looks very frumpy and hate pretty much everything thing about the look except maybe the make-up. She’s got nice hair and even that looks lousy. I would have liked to see her in Taylor’s dress. That would have better flattered her figure and the color would have been better for her. The dress she is wearing is making her shoulders look slope-y (I know, not a word), and a strong shoulder is so much more attractive.

    • Belle Epoch says:

Katie’s look does nothing for me, either. Her legs are so wonky she should always wear pants!

  23. mia girl says:

In my book, Jeff Bridges wins everything!

  24. Kate says:

Katie looks pretty but I wore a bridesmaid dress that looked exactly like that last month. Same hair too.

  25. Faye says:

I think they all looked nice, and color-coordinated! Taylor’s dress is lovely and her hair is a million times better than Sunday night’s – she’s like a sorbet palate cleanser after a gross, heavy meal (i.e. her outfit for the other time). Katie looks nice, and Odeya is really pretty. She looks so serious -is this her first red carpet?

  26. Katie says:

Meryl wins. Katie looks matronly and Taylor’s dress is just odd. Odeya looks fabulous, but Meryl looks great and she looks comfortable in her own skin!

  27. cubfan34 says:

Jeff is my favorite actor. He looks so much younger clean shaven.

  28. Anna says:

    WHERES ALEXANDER SKARSGARD?!?!

I was hoping he would attend the premiere and we would get pics but I don’t think he went. He’s been MIA for months now, he’s pretty much skipped all the True Blood things too

  29. serena says:

I love Katie’s look, she looks stunning! Swifty is good too but so boring, seems like she dress like that all the time.

  30. mellie says:

They all look nice, we are talking two different age ranges of women here….they are both very pretty and had lovely dresses.

  31. Mischa Jane says:

Taylor and Katie both look nice. I really like Meryl’s look! It’s nice to see her in something kind of fun and edgy (for her). She looks great!

  32. lucy2 says:

I think they all look good, but I really like Odeya’s dress.
I haven’t read the book, but am supposed to be going to the movie this weekend with my book club! I’m sure I’ll be scolded for not reading it first.
The story sounds almost identical to a movie Christian Bale did ages ago, I’m guessing that movie was either based on the book or borrowed heavily from it.

  33. Pandy says:

Is Katie Holmes still getting work?? Her dress is pink, not red … was she trying to hijack the attention? Very pageant-y.

  34. LC says:

Every time I see a photo of Taylor Swift, she has that same variation of that “look how precious and vintage and cutesy and adorable I am” expression on her face. I cannot tell you how much it annoys me. Taylor, you cannot be permanently 17 no matter how much you want to. You are a grown woman, take ownership of it. Be proud. Be fierce. Stahp.

  35. JenniferJustice says:

I prefer Katie’s look. And I have a soft spot for her so I’m baised. Taylor is just so try hard, I can’t stand it. Can she ever just stand natural for a picture? Why does she always pose like she’s a super model? Grrrrrr……

  36. Jayna says:

I love all three dresses, which is rare for me. I have to admit that Taylor’s dress looks great on her, but I hate her try-hard poses. She’s not the only one that does this. I am really tired of certain actresses being so posy on the red carpet. I love Taylor’s hair color, though..

  37. breezymc says:

I have seen this movie. Back when it was made in 2002 and called Equilibrium. I need to read the book though, and hope its fun!

  38. Mrs.Krabapple says:

    They ALL look really great.

  39. Fan says:

Taylor is my new favorite. Love her styles.

  40. Nymeria says:

Katie looks very toned and confident! Looks good.

  41. Hissyfit says:

Love Taylor and the middle girl’s red dress. There is something off about Katie’s look. I don’t if its the cut of the dress, her eye shadow or that terrible hair do. Meryl looks great too!

  42. melain says:

I like all these looks. Classy. But I am so over Katie Holmes.
