Hugh Jackman increases Oscar ratings, but Billy Crystal wants to come back

81st Annual Academy Awards - Show

After facing falling Oscar ratings the past two years, producers made several bold decisions this year. Instead of going for a tried-and-true comedian, they went for a song-and-dance Wolverine, Hugh Jackman. The producers played around with the format, the Best Song nominees, the way the acting awards are presented. The gamble paid off with a 6% increase in viewership, and rave reviews of Jackman’s performance as host. In other words, Oscar producers have found a winning formula (Jackman + lots of music + good acting category races = success), and should stick with it.

The 2009 Oscar ratings are projecting success for the years telecast of the Academy Awards. The 2009 Oscar ratings are reportedly up 6% from last year, and are pointing towards Hugh Jackman being a big success as the host of the 81st annual awards show. Whether it is a mix of the way the show was hosted, or the films that were nominated, but more people tuned in to this years show than the one hosted in 2008 by comedian Jon Stewart.

Preliminary data from the Oscar telecast (according to E! Entertainment) is that an estimated 33.6 million people watched the telecast on average from 5:30pm to 8pm Pacific Time. This isn’t quite the entirety of the show though, so more numbers are soon to come, but it’s safe to say that this was more of a success than the 2008 telecast.

But of course, nothing can be that simple. OK! is reporting that Billy Crystal wants to come back as Oscar host in 2010. OK! reports (as do other sources) that Crystal has hosted some of the highest-rated Oscar telecasts in the past twenty years. I actually like Crystal as host – he’s very nice, and very rarely makes mean jokes at the expense of any of the heavy-hitter industry people. A lot like Hugh Jackman, come to think of it.

Hugh Jackman successfully hosted one of the highest rated televised Oscar shows in recent history on Sunday, catapulting him into the rotation of available hosts for future shows. But according to Fox News, an “oldie but goodie” may be looking to jump back into the lineup.

Billy Crystal is reportedly interested in returning as host of the Oscars, following last Sunday’s spectacular format and, consequently, sky-high ratings.

Crystal last hosted the Academy Awards in 2004 but it’s safe to say, when it comes to Oscar’s favorite hosts from recent years, Crystal takes the cake.

He first hosted in 1990, continuing on a four-year consecutive streak through 1993. After taking a 3-year break, Crystal returned for another round of back-to-back hosting in 1997 and 1998, and again in 2000.

The funnyman reportedly has an open schedule these days, having finished touring with his one-man show.

From OK! Magazine

It’s a little bit insulting to Jackman, I think. He did this wonderful job, he delivered higher ratings and now he’s being shown the door. Jackman should have the honor of being asked back – which he could refuse, of course. One thing’s for sure, though – I seriously doubt Jon Stewart and his intellectual snark will ever be asked back. So sad.

    NO BILLY
    Hugh Jackman please

  2. Ash says:

It would be neat to see a double hosting gig with the both of them. But that would probably never happen.

  3. czarina says:

On the other hand, while Jackman was great at hosting and obviously enjoyed himself, HE may not see this as an annual gig–after all, he has movies to make, etc. Perhaps Jackman simply cannot commit to a yearly hosting job?
Frankly, I think he should be remembered for doing a good job and walk away now!!!

  4. voodoobetty says:

Im lost. Where does it say the producers want Crystal back?It simply says Crystal wants the gig back. This header seems misleading.

  5. michelllle says:

    Oh Please NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
    Anybody BUT Crystal.
He’s so whiny, obnoxious, and not funny in the slightest.

    Jackman was refreshing,
Stewart, amusing but Crystal’s enough to make you tune out.
    Why not Ricky Gervais?

  6. Ash says:

Ricky Gervais, that’s a good one!

  7. lrm says:

hey,it was perhaps a more interesting acting race this year? and with slumdog getting so much publicity, along with mickey rourke, and there’s a recession-more people want to tune out by escaping with t.v. entertainment.
how do they know for sure? 6% isn’t that much;doesn’t mean jon stewart sucked.

  8. Persistent Cat says:

I’m with with voodoobetty, nowhere does it say they spoke to Billy Crystal, nor does it say who they want to have host it next year.

Off topic, do you think you’ll ever get rid of the SugarDVD ads on the side? I’m at work right now and I don’t want anyone seeing that.

  9. bdthomp says:

I agree with PC about the SugarDVD ads: totally NSFW!

  10. Celebitchy says:

The title is reworded to reflect that it is Billy Crystal who wants to come back and that the producers haven’t mentioned it that we know of. Thanks to all of you who pointed that out!

  11. PJ says:

Maybe the new rule of not allowing presenters to walk the red carpet made a difference also. This forced people to watch the show in order to see their favorite actors.

I hate to bring up Brangelina and JohnJen, but maybe some people were watching to see what happened.

  12. Ron says:

I thought it was the best show in years. The stage design was great, Jackman was great, I love the way they presented the awards to the actors. That really gave each actor a “moment” which was lovely. The only thing I didn;t like was the medley number with Beyonce…take a pass on that and bring back a preformance of each individual song that nominated. Oh yeah, and when you are going to do comedic bits for the presenters, make sure they can acutally do the bit. Not everyone has timing. Overall, it was a really good telecast.

  13. Autumm Leaves says:

I loved Hugh and he did a wonderful job. I actually enjoyed it. Billy, as much as I’m a fan, he will not generate a ratings increase. The production was a vast improvement as well. The only thing I didn’t like was the audience so close to the stage.

    Hugh 2010!

  14. Autumm Leaves says:

For the love of God, please don’t bring back Beyonce next year!! There are other talented singers out there. GEEZ!!

  15. Ash says:

And I love how she was able to throw in her version of “At Last” in there. Made me giggle.

  16. Feebee says:

I love Billy Crystal’s hosting of the Oscars but I also love Hugh Jackman… he should definitely get first right of refusal on returning. Billy will just have to suck it up, he’s obviously not the only funny, talented, song and dance man out there now. Maybe that’s hurting him just a little. And of course Hugh has it all over him in the perfect physical specimen category!

  17. Christina says:

wasn’t he on stage for like five seconds?

  18. Madelyn Rose says:

I thought Hugh Jackman was lovely – his opening number was excellent. They should consider bringing him back…not sure how I feel about Billy Crystal. I don’t remember feeling one way or the other about him. All I can think of is WHen Harry Met Sally when I hear his name!

Autumn Leaves, I totally agree that they should pick someone other than Beyonce next year! I was thinking that number was crap and that it was like a low-rent Baz Luhrman piece, then I heard that it WAS created by Baz! It made me wince for him bc I loved Moulin Rogue so much, but that Oscar bit just didn’t work!

  19. hmm says:

If they really want to make the Oscars successful in the future they may want to consider getting rid of some of the other award and award shows. By Oscar night, we knew who the winners were in every major category long before the show aired and for that reason there was no genuine surprise and very few heartfelt moments. Let’s face it by the time Slumdog won its 5th award, it was kind of tiresome.

  20. Maritza says:

Hugh Jackman is so much better, Billy Cristal is looking so old and I really don’t think he is that funny.

  21. Ter says:

While Hugh did a good job I was not pleased with his vocals all that much. He made me feel uncomfortable in the way that I was deciding if he knew that he was hitting the high end of the gaydar. And please don’t let Beyonce back, I’ll have more Queen Latifah please.

  22. Vince says:

BILLY!!!! BILLY!!! BILLY!!!!! PLEASE COME BACK AND MAKE THE OSCARS WHAT IT USED TO BE. IV NOT NOR WILL WATCH A CEREMONY ALL THE WAY THROUGH UNTIL YOU HOST AGAIN, FORTUNATELY I WAS AT THE A ACADEMY AWARDS THE LAST TIME YOU HOSTED.
