Jamie Dornan on ‘Fifty Shades’: ‘It can’t be hardcore, it’s not going to be grotesque’

I didn’t get a chance to cover these Jamie Dornan photos at the GQ Men of the Year event, so here you go. He looked really good! His beard gives me hope that Season 2 of The Fall is going to be beardy and interesting. Jamie came to the GQ Awards because he was being presented with the GQ Vertu Breakthrough Artist Award for his work in The Fall, New Worlds and his casting in Fifty Shades of Grey. When he accepted the award, he told the audience:

“Eddie Redmayne won this award last year – six years ago we were whoring our way around LA together. We had no scripts, no women in our lives and very little dignity, but we must have done something right. At least in the eyes of GQ.”

[From GQ UK]

That’s sort of cute. I would have liked to have seen him in his “whoring around” stage. While speaking to media outlets at the event, Jamie was asked a lot about Fifty Shades. He talked about the nudity and how it’s not going to be as hardcore as people think:

“I’m not really fearful of that stuff. It’s just work. It’s strange work sure. But it’s still just work. I just get on with it. In some ways it’ll break a few boundaries. But at the same time, they want to put bums on seats. They can’t alienate an audience. You know it has to be watchable. It can’t be hard core. I wouldn’t have signed up to it if it was. You’ve got to make something a large amount of people can go and see. It’s not going to be grotesque.”

Ah, yes, that’s always a good way to promote your sexy-time movie: “It’s not going to be grotesque.” Exactly.

Meanwhile, did you know that Jamie had some kind of fling/relationship with Lindsay Lohan. Apparently that happened – I guess he was on her Sex List? And Lohan was at the GQ event, and sources claim that the organizers were trying to keep them far away from each other. Sources also say that Lindsay demanded to be a table full of men because “She gets on better with guys and had spent time putting together a sexy look so wanted to be admired.” Sounds about right.

He seems to be handling this well and is booking a decent amount of jobs. Somehow avoided the steaming pile of turd that Charlie Hunnam was so afraid of. Keep on keeping on, Golden Torso.

    • kennedy says:

I have a confession. I am a full on Hunnam-loonie. I just binge watched Sons of Anarchy Season 1-6, and have gone back and watched various seasons AGAIN in the last few days. It’s a condition I cannot and will not apologize for. I have Hunnam-itis. I’m hijacking a Jamie Dornan thread to talk about the spectacular being that is Mr. Hunnam. And his Jax Teller is the sexiest character on television. I can’t get enough of him, his wonky American accent, and his bearded glory. I can’t wait for Season 7!

I’ve never watche SoA but he seems like a nice dude. I could do without the flesh beard thing he has going.

  2. PunkyMomma says:

He’s adorable but I still can’t see him as Christian Grey.

  3. lower-case deb says:

can’t wait to see what 50 cents will do this time.

  4. als says:

I think he takes himself way too seriously. He looks tense in every photo and he always justifies something about 50 Shades – why he picked it, how the sex is, etc.
Have more fun, man, it’s not the end of the world, you’re about to be a movie star!

  5. Tig says:

I’m looking forward to the press tour for sure! He is amazingly good looking, esp in motion( despite what he said on Graham Norton!!). Those comments regarding his and Eddie R’s wild days and nights in LA-pretty funny!

  6. joanne says:

So…he’s suggesting that consensual BDSM between two adults are, in his mind, “grotesque”? Jeez, producers, way to inject BDSM into mainstream culture by hiring a dude who thinks the activities are “grotesque”. This is why I hate the book, the movie and everything it represents. It is not going to remove any of the bias that the subculture has always faced, it is only going to add to it on many, many disturbing levels. I hope young women who are interested in the subculture don’t get wrong ideas after watching the movie and seek an abusive relationship after that, thinking that’s what BDSM is like.

    • Diana B says:

It was the way that stupid book portrayed it. That’s why I hate it so much. Such a disservice to the BDSM way of life…

    • ORLY says:

I don’t think he’s saying BDSM s€X is grotesque, he’s probably referring to that scene where the guy yanks the girl’s tampon out so they could have s€x. A lot of people were grossed out by that.

      • mia girl says:

Oh Orly, thanks for reminding me about that part in the book! So histerically and absurdly gross!

    • uninspired username says:

The consent in that book was dubious at best.

And the way E.L. James wrote some of the scenes was gross. (See: the tampon scene.)

    • Dani says:

Anyone who read the book knows that Grey was borderline abusive. I don’t think he meant that BDSM is grotesque, he probably meant the nature of their relationship.

    • starrywonder says:

Love of God that tampon scene was disgusting.

  7. grabbyhands says:

Oh Jamie-this movie isn’t breaking any boundaries. No, I tell a lie-it will break the dubious boundary of the kind of crap that “romance” hungry women will pay for. Sam Taylor-Wood may be able to hodge podge some kind of semi-workable story out of this mess, but it is still a mess and everyone involved is going to be talking it about having been involved with it sheepishly in about ten years.

The nauseating thing is that while he’s right-you couldn’t film the book as is without a rating that would cut your audience-it just means that this will just strengthen the belief that so many women seem to have about these books, that they’re some kind of a love story. Gross.

  8. Lori says:

He is quite good in The Fall, and he’s very nice looking. I still have no interest in seeing 50 shades but I also hope it doesn’t ruin his career a la Show Girls.

    • Lydia says:

I love The Fall and cannot wait for S2.

    • GAIL says:

I don’t have a great deal of interest in seeing the movie either, but I’m fascinated by how Universal is taking this source material and trying to shape it into an event movie for women. That task has some intriguing challenges and I’m curious to see the direction they choose to go and why. I don’t think it will be a disaster movie like Show Girls, but I’m the first to say I have no idea what it will be. That’s the appeal for me.

  9. minime says:

What?? Jamie Dornan? Lindsay Lohan?? Wow, that is sad just to imagine.

  10. kri says:

Waitwhatwho?!?!?!? Oh, god. He banged Lindsay, and is worried that 50 Shades will be “grotesque”? Dude. You barely escaped Cthulu’s Cave, so I would not stress about too much movie sex. Just be happy your dong is still attached to you.

  11. Mokona says:

Yeah celebitchy had a post about Lindsay and Jamie in 2006. Apparently they dated after Jamie and Kiera had split.

    • Lori says:

The difference in Lindsay’s appearance in those photos to now is crazy. God boozing and cracking can age a girl.

  12. Maria says:

    One word… HOT!!!

  13. Poe says:

I’m sorry, but he does nothing for me. I don’t think he’s hot, and I don’t thinks he’s ugly either. Maybe, it’s because he always looks p-ssed off in photos to me. Almost like he wants to be anywhere else.
