RJ Mitte of Breaking Bad had his hand broken by bullies, but learned to pity them

The 2014 BAFTA TV Tea Party
RJ Mitte, 22, played Walter and Skyler’s White’s teenage son, Walter White Jr, on Breaking Bad. This year he had a guest spot on ABC Family’s Switched at Birth, and he’s also working on a film, Who’s Driving Doug, with Daphne Zuniga. I’m looking forward to his next career move as he’s an excellent actor.

Mitte has cerebral palsy, and he’s become one of the few actors with a disability on television. In a new interview with the Huffington Post, he explained that the character was written with cerebral palsy, and that it wasn’t something that was added after he was found for the part. He said that the role was written by showrunner Vince Gillian “in memory of a friend he had in college,” and that the character “practically described me.” He also detailed how he was bullied as a child, but learned to pity the kids who hurt him. It was a fascinating interview and I’m glad I got the chance to see it. Here’s more, from The Huffington Post, and you can see the video on their site:

On if being on TV has raised awareness of CP
At the end of the day, there’s not a lot of characters on television with disabilities… About 4% of characters actually have a disability that are on television. I’m one of, I think like 7, that are actually working in this industry. I try to bring awareness not just to CP but to all disabilities. It’s just knowledge. My disability gave me so much knowledge that I was able to bring into Breaking Bad… this is real, people live with it and people should see it.

On what having CP taught him
It taught me what this world’s really like… When I’m walking, you’ll never know I have a disability. The only way is if I talk or if I do something with my hands, and someone notices… It taught me pain. I had to go through a lot of different procedures… all these types of things where they wanted to cut into me, put rods into tendons.

They showed a clip from BB where kids mocked him and asked if that happened to him IRL
In different ways. I had kids that would make fun of my braces… push me and shove me. I had my hand broken. But the thing about it is, it’s not uncommon. My disability just makes [me] me of a target, but at the end of the day everyone deals with this… this is everyone, this is life, this is what people deal with.

On how his friends and family looked out for him
Being from Louisiana and Texas my family and friends were very loud and were not shy to voice their opinion. I was lucky enough that I had those. I tried to set the example that everyone can stand up for themselves… it taught me to show pity to bullies… whatever they’re going through, I feel bad for them because they’ll never learn. People like that never grow. One day someone bigger is going to come around and they’ll learn but by then it’s too late.

I used that as motivation. [To get out of my crutches]

[From Video on Huffington Post]

Mitte described some of the procedures he had to go through as a kid to be able to walk on his feet instead of his toes and it sounded awful. He said “you learn to adapt.”

That was one of the better celebrity interviews I’ve heard. I don’t want to say it was “inspiring,” because I doubt Mitte wants anyone to see him that way. He said that everyone deals with crap in life, and he even said that everyone has a disability in some way. A while ago I saw a Ted Talk that changed my outlook on people with disabilities. The speaker, Stella Young, humorously mocked the tendency to make memes and inspirational images out of disabled people doing things, and said she didn’t see herself that way and didn’t want others to view her as an inspiration. I get the sense that Mitte is the same, and that he’s just doing his thing. He’s a skilled actor and I’d like to see him in another big role soon.

I’m the last person in the world to watch BB, and started watching it on Monday. I’m so impressed with his character that I googled last night to see if he really had CP. And he’s freaking handsome.

    • mimif says:

I’m the 2nd to last person, because I just started watching it last week. I googled too and yes he is freaking handsome!

      • AceMom2 says:

You guys will have to move up one because I haven’t watched it yet! It’s on my fall/winter viewing list though…. can’t wait to start the series. And big kudos to RJ for having such a great outlook & attitude ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Kiddo says:

Great show. He seems like a genuinely nice guy, too.

      • mimif says:

I totally have the hots for Walter White.

      • Esmom says:

mimif, hmm not sure if I can agree with you although I think Bryan Cranston is hot and an amazing actor. It’s fun to read about someone who’s just starting BB. I thought I was late in bingeing through it last winter. I thought it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

      • mimif says:

This probably isn’t going to make any sense, but I when I think of Cranston, I think of Malcolm In The Middle and my lady boner is immediately quashed. However, if I think of Walter, I get the tingles…make sense? No. I think he does such a great job of disappearing into the character, that I can’t help but love him. Can I have some of his yummy-ness? Lol joking fruit cakes! Calm yourselves.

      • Tiffany :) says:

mimif, just wait until he “knocks” at the door (you will get this later). I feel guilty, but yes, sometimes Walter White has a sexual magnetism that can’t be denied! ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • mimif says:

        Stop it Tiffany! (No don’t). I can’t wait. ๐Ÿ˜€

      • Ag says:

re WW – i think it’s the power thing. i used to find tony soprano so f-ing hot, and he is, physically, nothing even close to what i find attractive in a guy in real life. haha

      • mimif says:

I totally had the hots for him too. Sigh. RIP James.

      • Esmom says:

I don’t know, I never got the hots for WW at any time, power or no power. I guess I felt like the geeky guy was always just under the surface. And as Tiffany says, just wait. But I agree that his performance as WW was utterly transformative, deserving of every accolade he received and then some.

      • mimif says:

        Oops wrong spot.

    • MG says:

I started watching BB 2 weeks ago and I’m already on the last season, halfway through…because I’m obsessed! I watched it for like 10 hours on Saturday, which is pathetic, but I can’t help it. I’m always telling myself, just one more episode. Mitte is a great character, and he’s really really good looking! Enjoy the show!

      • Esmom says:

Ha, I spent an entire weekend last winter watching it when the rest of my family was out of town. I emerged only to attend a fundraiser on Sat night and was so disoriented I could barely engage and just wanted to run home and watch more!

      • mimif says:

Lol Esmom. Sorry you died, but Walter White is a’knocking. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        (Totally something I would do.)

      • Tiffany :) says:

My boyfriend and I became hermits when we started watching it. We essentially spent all of July 2013 watching Breaking Bad. We weren’t planning on doing that, but it became so addictive. Even when we would pry ourselves off the couch to deal with life, we’d be in the grocery store talking about what was going to happen, etc.

  2. Dani says:

People are horrible. This world never ceases to amaze me. What a handsome kid, wish him the best of luck.

  3. TheOriginalKitten says:

Wow…good for him. I had no idea he had CP, I thought he was just an actor playing the part of someone with CP.

  4. BengalCat2000 says:

He is so freaking hot. I saw some modeling pics that he did & I couldn’t believe I was looking at “Walt Jr.” He is amazing & talented & I hope to see a lot more him & am glad he’s getting press!

  5. Ag says:

he was amazing on BB, wishing him much success with his career.

  6. Esmom says:

He may not want to be seen as an inspiration but he gives me hope for my teenage son, who is on the autism spectrum. He hates the label and he wants no recognition that he deals with so many challenges on a daily basis that 99% of people around him have no idea about because he flies under the radar so well. I think, like RJ, he recognizes that everyone goes through stuff and his greatest wish is to just be who he is with no fanfare or fuss.

Loved RJ in BB, he was so great and just absolutely broke my heart in some of his scenes. WIshing him much continued success.

    • Ag says:

i was diagnosed as an adult, precisely because i was able to fly under the radar and compensate for years. i went through something akin to the stages of grief once i knew what was “wrong.” i imagine it can be way more difficult for kids, being a teenager kind of sucks and is rough to begin with. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Esmom says:

Wow, Ag, what a journey. Sounds like you have reached the acceptance stage, that is great.

It is really tough, for my guy at least. Some people really seem to embrace the label and have great “Aspie pride,” but my son really wants no part of that. He’s working really hard on trying to better accept it, though, his doc and therapist think it is key to his overall happiness and well being and I agree.

He just started high school, though, and already it seems much better than middle school because more people are just doing their own thing and he’s also seen more kids like him, who need some support but don’t want a big deal made of their differences.

      • mimif says:

Interesting stories, Esmom & Ag. I remember reading an interview with Peter Dinklage and he kinda sorta said the same thing. I’m paraphrasing, but if I remember correctly, he said he just wanted to live his life as a human and leave it at that, otherwise he would go down the wormhole of what ifs. I think it’s a great moral for everyone really; we all have our struggles regardless and at the end of the day, it’s those struggles that shape who we are. They don’t necessarily have to define you.

Best wishes to all of you. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. winosaurusrex says:

My boyfriend LOVES BB. I couldn’t make it through the first 3 episodes on my own, so now once a week we sit down together and watch a few episodes. We’re in season 3 right now I think.

And I’m liking it, and mainly it’s the caliber of acting in this series. My god everyone is incredible.

  8. The New Classic says:

I’m 29 and I was about to feel creepy for pointing out that RJ is really freaking hot but OMG is it true. Anyone know if he’s got a gf? Lol.

    • Celebitchy says:

I did a half-assed google search on it and I couldn’t find anything. I did see that photos of him at events and out (see the photo in the gallery) with some ladies. That’s his mom with him at the Emmys, I don’t know who the brunette is, that photo was taken in May outside a club in Hollywood.

    • BengalCat2000 says:

He’s 22 or 23. He said in an interview that he started BB when he was between 14 & 16.

  9. lucy2 says:

He was very impressive on BB, especially in the last season or 2, and seems like a really nice, smart, thoughtful guy. I hope more good roles come his way.

  10. Bucky says:

Oh, Walter Jr. (Flynn if you’re nasty), my inappropriate celebrity crush. He was, however, of age by the time I ever saw him as hot on Breaking Bad.

  11. Tippy says:

Seems fairly fortuitous for RJ that they were casting for the part of a teenage boy with Cerebral Palsy.

I’ve only seen through season 4 and thus far the cast, from top to bottom, has consistently been among the best I have seen.

FWIW: John Cusack and Matthew Broderick both turned down the role of Walter White.

    • mimif says:

Interesting. Am I allowed to write that I am so very glad Broderick didn’t take the part?

    • Esmom says:

I’d heard about Cusack but not Broderick, interesting. I cannot for the life of me imagine either one of them in the role. Wonder how much they are kicking themselves for not taking it. Although who knows, the show may have tanked if either of them had.

      • mimif says:

Right? Talk about sliding doors. I don’t think Cusack would have been as convincing, although I am (or was) quite fond of him as an actor. I’m not sure he could lose the quirk enough, if that makes sense. Sheesh listen to me, I’m on the beginning of season two and I’m already geeking out.

      • Esmom says:

I’ve always liked Cusack, too, in fact I had a pretty big crush on him for a while. I totally know what you mean about him not being able to lose his quirk. But I guess we’ll never know.

And listen to me, I finished BB months ago and clearly still love to geek out about it. I found the recaps/comments on the AV Club to be awesome, btw. I got into a routine of reading them after every episode.

      • mimif says:

Well that’s the hallmark of a good show, eh? I remember when it came out, my mom was so obsessed and I was like, nfw am I watching a show about meth (I also live in a bubble with no TV, took me forever to get into GOT, too) because I live in the meth capital of the US of A and am absolutely inundated with the imagery. Anyway, I’m soooo glad I dipped in, it’s obviously so much more than that. And they are filming another season?!!

My boyfriend’s bday is on Friday and I’m totally getting him this outfit as a present (minus the motorhome). Lol

      • Esmom says:

Haha, nice gift. I’m not sure anyone but WW/BC can pull those off but you shall soon see!

As for the show, filming another season? It’s done but maybe you are thinking of the new spin off, Better Call Saul?

  12. Aminta says:

Love this post. He is awesome.

  13. Meme says:

Love this. He’s a handsome and talented young man. Wish only good things for RJ

  14. Britt says:

He is a great actor and super good-looking. …and I hate bullies, btw…
