Chloe Moretz: ‘Real teenagers are not these shiny, pretty, happy people’

Chloe Moretz

Chloe Moretz covers the October issue of Teen Vogue to promote If I Stay (a sad romcom) and The Equalizer (a Denzel Washington flick). Chloe strongly resembles Kiernan Shipka on the cover, right? I blinked my eyes to make sure it was really Chloe. The cover is kinda meh. I dig the editorial shot with the red dress and gothic decor. Chloe has a very mature look, but her style is also age appropriate. She’s 17 now and has over 30 movies under her belt. More often than not, Chloe has appeared in R-rated films. Her characters are often wiser than their years and (incidentally) often possess foul mouths. She’s played a vigilante and a teenage prostitute. If I Stay is actually very “normal” by Chloe standards since she plays a teenage piano prodigy. In this interview, Chloe talks about why she chose to do a YA movie and about her new boyfriend, Brooklyn Beckham:

She’s home-schooled now: “People were so mean to me. I hated it. They didn’t understand. ‘Why are you leaving all the time?'” And when one teacher told her mother that her daughter “smiled too much,” Mom pulled her out of school and opted for tutors.

Her style: “I’m into this minimalist phase. I keep in the palette of black, gray, white, nude.” She looks at style.com for ideas, but her mom still closely monitors her spending.

Her mom is not permissive: “My mom tells me no all the time! I tried to go to this pool party thing last night with 10 friends, and she was like, ‘No! You slept over at your friend’s last night–you need to stay home.’ I’ve never been the kid who wants to do crazy stuff. I tell my mom where I’m going. It’s a pool party — I’m sure people are going to be drinking. But I’m not going to be drinking. I have a control issue. I like knowing who’s around me.”

Why she likes Brooklyn: What I find really interesting about Brooklyn — and what I really love about that kid — is that he is passionate about what he wants, which is to be a professional soccer player.”

On If I Stay: “It’s a lot more in-depth than ‘I love this boy’ or ‘I love this guy.’ It’s realistic, which is why I haven’t done any of these YA projects until now. None of them have been exciting to me. Real teenagers are not these shiny, pretty, happy people. Real teenagers fall in love, they get intimate. Some of them drink and some of them smoke. And kids push boundaries, and parents aren’t always amazing.”

Chloe seems remarkably self aware for a 17-year-old girl. Much of her lucidity probably stems from her close ties to her family. Two of her older brothers (she has four total), Trevor and Ethan, are often papped by her side. They’re like unofficial bodyguards and keep her on the straight and narrow. Chloe says in this interview that whenever she likes a boy, her brothers will follow him on social media so that the boy knows he’s under observation. Funny.

I hope Chloe makes a smooth transition to adult actress. She certainly has the talent.

That part about the brothers is funny!

  2. minime says:

She always sounds savvy and witty in her interviews. Way beyond her age in Hollywood terms. I really hope she can do a good transition to adult actress. I think that if she manages to accomplish that, she will have an amazing career. (and the part about her family and brothers is just too sweet)

    • Esmom says:

Agree. She reminds me a little of Kiernan Shipka from Mad Men, and both remind me a bit of Emma Watson, another one who seems poised and mature beyond her years and who seems to be doing well as she transitions to adulthood.

If they can’t make it beyond childhood stardom, I’m not sure anyone can.

      • Charlie says:

As much as I love Emma Watson, she isn’t a good actress at all.

      • Esmom says:

Charlie, I hear you, and I’ve only seen her in Happy Potter. I guess I was drawing parallels with her beauty and poise but not necessarily her talent.

      • Josefa says:

I think Emma’s got potential. She does sound a little bit fake, but she has “it”. She’s charismatic, people like seeing her in movies. Your line delivery, body language and facial expressions can be worked on. The “it” factor is something you either have or you don’t.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I like her, except I am so jealous of blondes who look gorgeous in red. I think I’m the only one in the world who doesn’t.

    • Lady Macbeth says:

Like her too. I’m not jealous because I look good in red but I’m not blonde though and I might be jealous of that!!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I forgive you for not looking like a vampire in red (like me). I LOVE red, so just enjoy it for both of us!

    • MrsB says:

You’re not the only one! I’ve never been able to wear red, I have too much pink undertone in my skin. So I wear red, and I suddenly look like I have a sunburn :/

  4. Dani2 says:

I used to adore her but I’m pretty “meh” on her these days. I find it really funny that she calls Brooklyn Beckham (who she’s dating) a kid, she’s like a year older than him. And I can’t wait to see If I Stay, it’s one of my favourite YA novels so I hope they do the book justice.

    • OriginalTessa says:

I don’t think she’s dating him. I think they wanted people to think that to drum up some hype for her movie, but she was papped a few weeks ago holding hands with another guy that is more likely her actual boyfriend. He’s a regular person that’s in college apparently. Lainey had the scoop.

    • Charlie says:

I just can’t warm up to her, I don’t know why. I haven’t seen her in movies, so I can’t say anything about her acting ability.

If Brooklyn wants to be a proffesional football player, shouldn’t he already be playing for juniors of a club?

  5. lucy2 says:

I hope she does alright as she grows up too. She’s a talented actress, but she’s worked a lot and has a lot of attention on her. Hopefully her family is as strong and supportive as they sound.

  6. Farah says:

I like Chloe. She makes interesting risky choices, and more often than not, they fail. But she’s build a vocal fanbase for herself.

I’ve defeded the Brooklyn relationship, it’s a 17 year old and a 15 year old dating. There’s like 18 months between them, it stills weirds me out that she refers to him as “that kid”

  7. shannon says:

she seems harmless, but I don’t think she was right for the role of Mia. However, she was awesome in Let Me In.

  8. serena says:

Totally didn’t know she was dating a Beckham!

Funny and cute that her four older brothers act like her bodyguards, I guess they’ll kind of scare every guy away lol.

  9. bettyrose says:

Wow, 30 movies and I can’t name one, except the one mentioned in this article. I would never guess this girl was 17. That red dress pic..maybe 27?

    • JM says:

First movie I saw her in was Let Me In which was adapted from the Swedish film Let The Right One In and she was AMAZING as the “12 year old” vampire. She’s also been in Dark Shadows, Hugo and Kick Ass.

      • Esmom says:

She was great in Hugo. And Kick Ass was such a jarring contrast. Her choices are indeed varied.

      • OriginalTessa says:

I loved her as the little sister in 500 Days of Summer. She was great.

      • Elle Kaye says:

I watched “The Amityville Horror” remake with Ryan Reynold’s, and I was really surprised to recognize Chloe as the youngest daughter.

I loved her in “The Killing Fields” and “Let Me In”, while, “Hugo” was a visual gem. Her sparring with Alec Baldwin was great on “30 Rock” Her acting is nuanced for one so young. I look forward to seeing what other choices she makes.

    • bettyrose says:

Okay, I saw the Swedish one but not the American one. Ooooh that totally is the girl from kick ass. Yeah I liked her in that. She seemed more like a kid there. I’m not hating on her for looking mature, but if these pics are your first intro to her, it’s hard to wrap your mind around her age.

  10. The Other Katherine says:

I think Chloe is a child actress in the mold of Jodie Foster and (more contemporaneously) Dakota Fanning. She’s one of the few young actors who, I am confident, will be just fine.

  11. Miss M says:

she plays a teenage violoncello prodigy NOT piano.

  12. Naddie says:

I like her. She has a calm, inteligent way about her. Also, is good to know famous people who are close to family. Everyone is so like “I left home when I was 16”, or “my father left and my mother was always high”.
