Julianne Moore covers NewBeauty, doesn’t like juice cleanses or noisy workouts

moore1

We are living in a world where Julianne Moore has never won an Oscar. It’s crazy. Julianne has gotten four Oscar nominations throughout her career, but she’s never won and that’s a travesty. Some people think it could finally be Julianne’s year. She was getting a lot of press for her “brave” part in Maps to the Stars, that Cronenberg film with Robert Pattinson. But then she came to TIFF to support Still Alice, and she walked away with MAJOR awards buzz for her role as a woman with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Kristen Stewart plays her daughter in that one. Just a note for all the Twihards. If the Best Actress race comes down between Reese Witherspoon, Amy Adams and Julianne… well, I have to say, I’m going to be more #TeamMoore than #TeamAdams.

Anyway, Julianne covers the new issue of NewBeauty Mag. She is an ageless vampire, right? I mean, there’s Photoshop working here too, but I’m including a red carpet photo of Julianne below, and I swear there isn’t any big difference. She’s 53 years old and she barely looks 38. Some highlights from the cover interview:

Briefly going blonde: “My grandmother always said my red hair was my calling card! And I never realized how much I identified with it until I had to dye it blond years ago for a role. It felt so weird, and I couldn’t wait to go back to my regular shade.” (She wore a blonde wig for Hunger Games: Mockingjay.)

No more juice cleanses: “I did a juice cleanse for the Golden Globes one year. I think I did it for three days. To be honest, the only weight I lost was in my brain!”

She likes a quiet workout: “I don’t like noisy workouts. I tried spinning and didn’t like it; it’s just too loud for me. I do better when I am working out in quiet, which is why I like yoga. I also work out at my house, do interval running and lift light weights.”

Getting older isn’t so bad: “I can remember being 12 and everyone was talking about the year 2000 and it seemed so far away. I remember thinking, ‘I will be 40 then,’ and it just seemed so old — I couldn’t even think about it; it was utterly shocking. But when you get there, it’s so much less serious than you anticipated. The changes aren’t as vast and it all happens very gradually. Getting older is not as bad as you think.”

Beauty advice for her daughter, Liv: “For my daughter, we talk about different things as they relate to beauty. I always tell her not to overpluck her eyebrows — I remember overplucking mine in sixth grade, and I guess everyone does! She is allowed to play with makeup, but I also remind her how beautiful she looks without it. I also try to remind her she can dress modestly and still look lovely.”

I’m so with Julianne about workouts. I know CB likes to do classes and work out with other people, but I’m like Julianne. I like to do my own solo, quiet thing at the gym. I can’t stand sweating around other people and I really don’t want to talk to people as I work out either. Also: No more juice cleanses!!

Hair colour on the cover pic is what I want! I have similar colouring to her so IF I dye my hair that colour, I’ll automatically look just like her right? Haha…

  2. Abbott says:

Yep. Definitely her year. Hope the votes don’t get split between Moore and Adams so much that that American citizen sneaks in for a second win.

    • Bridget says:

If Reese gets one of those 5 slots its going to be a dogfight. She’ll campaign hard, and her husband will help.

  3. Zandy says:

I hope she gets it, love her!
P.s. There are some fan pictures taken of Rob and FKA Twigs holding hands at Venice beach over the weekend #robstenisbroken lol

    • Abbott says:

Noooo! Rob’s just a loving, affectionate Sparkling Adonis with all his friends. He’s learned the true meaning of loving thy neighbor from Kristen. That’s how strong Robsten’s love is! Everlasting, never wavering, and – dare I say – UNBROKEN! (Maybe it was an accidental d*ck graze and it just looked like they were holding hands?)

    • mia girl says:

      @zandy- Scandal! I hadn’t seen those. Even so, #robstenunbroken!!!

@Abbott – it’s so obvious FKA Twigs is just being a good friend and pretending she’s with him to divert pap attention from the REAL couple, Kristen and Rob. This way they can continue their epic love and raise their baby away from prying eyes.

  4. MissTrial says:

    Amber Waves!
    Moore is talented and lovely.

She seems grounded and realistic, like she would be a cool friend to hang out , obviously this is based on the interviews I’ve read and seen.

  5. Jayna says:

Here’s some shots of her at a Knicks game with her hubby, dressing so cute and casually. Even without perfect lighting and photo-shop, she looks a decade younger and no massive fillers or botox that look odd at angles. With minimal makeup, she looks so fresh in the photos and still in love with her husband, very affectionate.

This is how you do it instead of the frozen, puffy faces, or pulled-too- tight, celebs.

    • Stella says:

Great pics. Thanks for sharing them. Her husband is a dish!

    • Tiffany :) says:

I love her face and I am so happy that she doesn’t fill it and mess with it.

      • MariPoodle says:

Doll (and I mean that with complete affection) she’s had it all done. But extremely well done. The best. But I can see her blepharoplasty (eye job) from across the street. Takes one to know one. 🙂

  6. Artimis says:

I’m more upset that we live in a world where Amy Adams, Alan Rickman, Richard Schiff and Allison Janney have never won Oscars. Never understood the love for Julianne as an actress, her roles always seem so brittle and lack warmth. I’m not saying she’s a bad acress by any means but I always find her one-note. Just my opinion though, each to his or her own 😀

    • Meme says:

You forgot Jessica Chastain. Allison Janney is a TV star.

      • Abbott says:

Janney does a lot of film work but it’s usually in independent, supporting roles. The Way, Way Back, The Help, Juno, Away We Go… she’s a fantastic actress all around.

      • Artimis says:

I didn’t forget her, I don’t rate her either and Allison Janney is both tv and movie – she should have least have got a Supporting Actress nom for Juno IMO.

      • Eleonor says:

She was great in Magnolia too !

    • Chinoiserie says:

I have never anything terribly interesting from Julianne either. Maybe I have not seen right roles from her. And I would rather get nominated multible times if I were an actor than win once and either get forgotten or have people telling I do not deserve it. But many see Oscar as a career award so they feel someone who has had Julianne’s career should have Oscar.

      • Artimis says:

@Chinoiserie 100% agree, it has become a ‘well, it’s his/her turn’ award (hello there Jeff Bridges!) – I don’t feel it’s a marker of quality anymore, more a popularity contest. (BTW I love Jeff Bridges but there year he won he was up against four actors who put in vastly superior performances in their roles).

      • Kiddo says:

Yeah. I like her. She seems nice and grounded, but I can’t say that her acting has ever struck me as outstanding and I don’t think she has a huge screen presence or a ton of charisma as compensation. Granted, I haven’t seen everything that she has been in.

Jeff Bridges has a ton of outstanding charisma and has been wonderful in a few roles. I can’t say he deserved the Oscar for the role in which he won, I didn’t see it, but he has been an underrated actor for years.

      • Maggie says:

Julianne was wonderful in Far From Heaven, one of my favourite films, and The Big Lebowski and from all accounts is heart breaking in Still Alice. I hope she finally gets that Oscar.

      • Abbott says:

@Artimis, so glad you mentioned that. Jeff Bridges was great the year he won, but it should have gone to Colin Firth. Bridges whole campaign, and ultimately the sentiment for which people voted, was based on the “It’s his time” thought process.

      • Bridget says:

@Abbott: I kind of thought Firth’s nomination that year was a ‘be happy you finally broke through to the big dance, your nomination is enough of a win’. On a side note, I LOVED how Tom Ford styled Julianne Moore for all the Single Man tour.

Julianne Moore has been really great in stuff, but it tends to be smaller, artier (read: frequently depressing) fare that she really ‘brings it’. The End Of The Affair, Short Cuts, Far From Heaven, A Single Man, and of course Boogie Nights – great CV, but not hugely watched.

      • Artemis says:

Magnolia and like The Big Lebowski. She does crazy well.

      • mia girl says:

She should have had an Oscar by now.

I loved Julianne in Boogie Nighta, Magnolia, A Single Man, The Kids are Alright… and she was amazing in The Hours.

Hell, I even loved her as twins Franny & Sabrina in As the World Turns.

      • LAK says:

Artimis/Chinoiserie: sorry to break it to you, but the Oscars have always been this way. The difference is that we see the game just as we see all the PR games famous or trying to be famous people play.

Oscars have always had these games, manipulation, lies, bought by studios, charming the right people and overlooking really talented people etc since they were started.

    • Belle Epoch says:

Whoa, really? That list is crazy. ALAN RICKMAN has never won?

Julianne always sounds like a Real Person who actually spends time with her kids, loves her husband, and has her values straight. It must be hard staying grounded while being a true star. Good for her.

BTW that pose is so awkward!

    • mia girl says:

@Artimis – While respectfully disagree with you about Julianne, I want to HUG YOU for mentioning Allison Janney.

She is, without doubt, one of the best actresses of this generation. There is not one performance, tv or film, where Janney does not deliver an amazing, nuanced performance. I am a Janneystan!

      • Artimis says:

@mia girl Hey viva la difference! 😀 I 100% agree with you on Allison – she floors me in whatever she’s in (did you see the criminally under-supported Mr Sunshine? She was hilarious!). Have a fellow Janneystan hug! 😀 xxx

      • mia girl says:

Yes. Mr Sunshine makes me sad for lack-o-love.

We will keep that virtual hug alive until Janney wins an Oscar!!
        Janneystans unite!

      • Tiffany :) says:

I looooooove Allison Janney too! I even like listening to her Keizer Permanente ads, which is really saying something. I’d love to see her in more that is worthy of her talent (unlike Moms).

      • Aotearovian says:

So happy there are so many of us! Alison Janney and Meryl Streep belong in the same tiny, exclusive Club of Bloody Amazing IMO. I most recently saw AJ in the first season of Masters of Sex and she blew me away. Again.

    • Charlie says:

I love Julianne, but if it comes to it, I’m more Team Adams.

    • Jaderu says:

Alan Rickman should have already won multiple Oscars for his voice alone. *swoon*

    • Tiffany :) says:

Wow, I have loved Julianne’s work for years, ever since Nine Months (with Hugh Grant). The Hours, Boogie Nights, the Big Lebowski, Children of Men, A Single Man, the Kids Are All Right, Game Change….

It surprises me that you say that she lacks warmth, because that is exactly what I feel she really brings to her roles. In Boogie Nights, her character was so complex and you could just feel the love for her kids and how her heart was bring ripped out of her. In Game Change, she wasn’t just the Palin stereotype, she was a woman who was thrown in to a situation that was over her head and she was trying to gain some control over it.

    • catsnaps says:

Artimis, I take it you’re a West Wing fan?! Agreed, the Academy gets it wrong so often, it’s hard to believe we put so much stock in what they have to say.

@Meme: Janney does wonderful work in films and has been in, by my count, FIVE Oscar-nominated (or Oscar-winning) films, and I still can’t believe she’s never received a nomination, for at least American Beauty. I think she’ll win one yet. She’s just too damn good.

    • siri says:

I actually agree about the lack of warmth. Technically, she’s wonderful, but it seems to be a very ‘brainy’ acting. Just not my cup of tea. But the Oscars are not an indicator for good acting anyway, it’s more ‘politics’ than it is art.

  7. Lucy2 says:

I just love her, she is such a great actress and seems like a lovely person.

  8. Sullivan says:

I can’t focus on her photo. That cover seems to be demanding that I “Stop Aging Now!”

  9. serena says:

She really is a vampire. I guess I’m #TeamMoore too, she reaally deserves an Oscar even more than Amy.
Anyway this quote: “To be honest, the only weight I lost was in my brain!” was just too hilarious! Guess it was a bit of bitchy-shade (get it Gwyneth?) which is never bad.

  10. Macey says:

I always like Juianne in the few movies Ive seen her in but really dont know much about her. I will say I think she looks far better than most women 20 yrs younger than her who are already messing with their faces.

I can’t stand gyms or noisy workouts either, although I do love to jam my own music when Im working out at home. I dont want to hear (or see ) other people or listen to their obnoxious noises they make when working out.
I’ve only been to 2 exercise classes in my life and they both had that same kind of obnoxious, noisy people (different place/times and ppl but the same noises) in the back making these odd screams and caws during the workout, btwn that and the obnoxious ‘power jams’ they played I left those classes annoyed and with a bad headache. last one was the last one for me.
I also used to work in a gym and couldnt stand some of the noises the guys made while trying to lift weight that was clearly too heavy for them. It wasnt just hard to listen to but hard to watch as well. No thanks, I’ll stick to my home gym with minimal equipment and my own noises.

  11. Kate says:

The only team I am is “not team Witherspoon.” Honestly I’m confused by people trying to pit Moore and Adams against each other of all people. Adams has never been a huge campaigner, is very deserving and would probably be more than happy more Moore if she won. Moore is wonderful and I can’t imagine she would begrudge someone like Amy either. :: shrugs::

  12. Luca26 says:

I love her I remember way back when she was on soaps. She hasn’t aged much since then and she is so talented. As much as I like Amy Adams there is no comparing the two Moore should win.

    • Sarah says:

Was just coming to say that I loved her since she was on As the World Turns ages and ages ago. I stopped watching soaps a long time ago but did pick up that show again for its last month to see how it went out and was so happy and surprised to see Moore return to the show for a few episodes as Frannie Hughes. I read an interview with her at the time where she credited soaps for giving her a strong work ethic and professionalism and that’s why she wanted to return – to see people she worked with at the start of her career and say thanks. I thought it was so gracious because too many people (COUGH —Meg Ryan—COUGH) try to whitewash their soap opera days.

      • oompaloompa says:

I was just going to say “yay Frannie!”. Other than Moore and Ryan, Ming Na Wen, Margaret Colin and Marissa Tomei all got their start on As the World Turns. As well as the car movies chick (don’t know her name) As the World Turns and The Guiding Light were my Ma’s jam.

    • Kate says:

Moore is 14 years older than Amy Adams. It’s not that there is no point it’s that it’s legit unfair to compare them.

  13. Lv says:

Didn’t Julianne say she’s constantly dieting / hungry?

  14. sheryl_l says:

She’s ageless. There are 2 or 3 bitches in Hollywood who doesn’t seem to age at all. Julianne is one of them, the other is Robin Wright, who I met in Santa Monica a few months ago, and really, she’s stunning and has a great flawless skin and a really toned body. Talking about taking care of themselves.

  15. Selina says:

She’s one of the most elegant, beautiful, and supremely talented actresses and women I’ve ever seen!

  16. Rhiley says:

I am with you– if the best actress comes down to those 3 women I am TeamMoore. She is brilliant in everything she is in: The Hours, The Kids are Alright, Chloe, 30 Rock, etc., etc. She seems very natural, intelligent, and kind as well.

    • Jayna says:

She deserved the Oscar for The Hours, not Nicole, not even Meryl. I thought all three performances were strong, but Julianne Moore’s was the standout for me.

  17. Hissyfit says:

I want her to win over Adams because i haven’t been impressed with Amy’s acting. IMO, She’s a good actress but I haven’t seen anything Oscar worthy yet.

But I have a feeling that Witherspoon is going to be the one to beat because she’s gonna campaign like crazy (she started already: the Malala award she got) and it’s going to be hard to beat her, her husband is also good with these campaigning stuff so Moore and Adams have to put extra effort if they want to win.

    • Rhiley says:

Can you imagine Reese “I’m an Ammmuurriccan on Ammmurrrican Soil” Witherspoon winning a second Oscar? I will lose any shred of interest I have for the Oscars should she win.

  18. Sunny says:

I like Amy Adams and I think she has talent but she is no Julianne Moore. Moore, is one of the best. I really am pulling for her to win an Oscar. She is on my list of actresses who need to win along with Annette Benning and Michelle Williams(but she still has plenty of time).

Seriously, Julianne Moore is everything. I find her movies hit or miss but her work is always wonderful. I mean Far From Heaven alone would put her on my all time list.

    • Kate says:

Moore is like 14 years older than Amy Adams. It’s more than a little unfair to compare them.

I suspect by the time Amy Adams is 54, she will have made an even stronger mark too. Even Moore (great as she is) wasn’t who she was 14 years ago.

      I’m just saying…:be fair.

      • Sunny says:

Noted but at this point in both their careers, I would argue that Moore is the better actress and her lack of Oscar is more of an oversight than Adams.

I don’t discount that Amy could grow in the future but for right now…

  19. manta says:

“We are living in a world where Julianne Moore has never won an Oscar”

Same for Gena Rowlands. I can see Woman under influence, Opening night or Gloria again and again and still be blown away.
Ed Harris has probably stopped counting his nominations. As someone pointed earlier, Moore just doesn’t seem to campaign hard. I genuinely wonder if every actor sees the Oscar as the Graal.

I’m inclined to think many of them are realistic about the way a career goes and value being steadily employed and praised for giving consistent quality work more than chasing a statue.
Decades after stellar performances, cinephiles are still in awe before Bacall or Rowlands. I’m not ready to bet it will be the same for Hilary Swank, Reese Witherspoon or Helen Hunt. If i was passionate about my art, I’d chose the destiny of the formers. Moore is not in bad company here.

  20. Jaded says:

The only juice cleanse I like involves the juice of the grape…fermented.

  21. Almond says:

She said in another interview that actresses were always hungry and that she was really tired on living on granola bars.
