Tom Cruise gave a fevered Rosamund Pike a pep talk about ‘Gone Girl’

pike1

Just as I was sitting down to write up Rosamund Pike’s Variety interview, Bedhead sent me this link – apparently, Ben Affleck does full-frontal nudity in Gone Girl. Just FYI. I think the idea of Batfleck Junior is kind of gross, but some of you might be into it. Believe it or not, that little factoid comes up in Rosamund’s Variety piece – at one point, she talks about how happy she is that the film got an R-rating and that they got to keep all of the sex and blood in the film. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

Being a Bond Girl at 21 backfired: “It cemented a sort of patrician, frigid, English, standoffish cold image. People think I lie about my age. I never had a chance to do those young roles.”

Getting Gone Girl at 35: “I’ve always been given roles that are more mature than I am. Now it could be that it’ll all start reversing, and I’ll stay around 30.”

She had a 103-degree fever the night before production began: “I threw up three times. My body was going through a lot of changes.” As she burned up, she fired off an email to an old friend — Tom Cruise. “I thought, ‘I’ve got to reach out to somebody who has been in this position,’ ” says Pike, who co-starred with Cruise in “Jack Reacher.” He promptly wrote back, telling her about his pre-fame jitters on 1981’s “Taps,” and offered a pep talk: “Trust yourself,” Cruise said. “You’re in the hands of a great director. You’re ready.”

She cried when she got the part: “I was unbelievably excited and unbelievably scared. You suddenly feel so small. I thought, ‘I’m embarking on this thing I’ve always wanted.’ ” Her voice cracks. “I’m going to cry now,” she says, as her eyes well up. “Someone is giving me that chance, which is something I’ve wanted since I’ve been a tiny girl.”

Fincher’s multiple takes: “I think probably around take 18 of getting my head bashed against the wall, I literally saw stars.”

So much blood: “I think if David hadn’t been worried about animal rights, he would have used pig’s blood. It is one of the hardest things to get screen blood to have texture and get it to dry in the correct way. Blood goes through so many stages as it dries. It becomes sticky and changes color. And arterial blood is different from other types of blood. We had many blood tests. I had so many showers” — up to 20 a day, she estimates — “Your skin becomes raw.”

There’s a ton of other interesting stuff, like how Rosamund had to keep gaining and losing weight for the weird film schedule, and how she did a shower scene with Ben Affleck where he was in awe of her abs. Fincher wanted Rosamund to sound like Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Rosamund’s dialect coach had her read Truman Capote’s Answered Prayers and the New Yorker aloud to get it right. The coach tells Variety: “We didn’t read down for Amy.” Fancy!

There’s also a fascinating sidenote about how Fox bought the rights to the book and how Reese Witherspoon never, ever owned the rights, contrary to widespread reports. Reese did produce it, but only after Fox bought the rights.

Oh, and did anyone else think the Tom Cruise story was sweet? It might have been a fever-dream, you know. With that kind of temperature, you might be like “I NEED TO EMAIL TOM CRUISE ABOUT THIS” too.

I love every detail of this… Especially the Tom Cruise and Carolyn Bessette bits.

  2. MrsBPitt says:

I saw an interview Ben did, and he said Ben jr. only pops out for a second!!! He was very funny, saying we had to remember it was very cold on set, and that it looks better in 3D…

I think the Tom Cruise story was very sweet. I think Cruise is a multi-sided individual…there are reports of him being wonderful to work with, and how nice he is to all his fans and then, of course, there is the side of him that lets scientology “slaves” work for free on his houses…and I’ll never forget that video of him and Miscavige practically do the “heil hitler” salute to the picture of L. Ron Hubbard (creepy)…

I’m really, really looking forward to Gone Girl…love David Fincher movies!!

    • Jaderu says:

I’ve never liked Tom Cruise. Even before the sauce slipped off his noodle. But I will say, I have never heard of him being rude, obnoxious, do you know who I am, to a fan, colleague, reporter (other than Matt Lauer). I’ll give him that.

      • Jedi says:

My sister met tom cruise backstage at Disney World last year. she said he was very polite, took the time to meet every cast member (there were about 25 waiting around), and was very short.

      • Atticus says:

Jaderu, I am going to shamelessly steal “sauce slipped off his noodle” and use it in my every day conversations!!! HAHAHA!

    • Gea says:

Ah Tom Cruise…Why is hard to belive that he is good guy after all.
I am so looking forward to see David Fincher movie. He is one of my favorite director and his body of work is impressive. Zodiac, Fight Club, Seven …just to name few.

      • Tapioca says:

Tom is a pro. A bats**t crazy, couch-jumping religious fanatic, but a pro. He must be, or people wouldn’t want to keep working with him after his starred dimmed.

David Fincher is one of the few directors (+ Chris Nolan and *whispers it* James Cameron) for whom I will pencil release dates into my diary. So looking forward to Gone Girl this weekend and the reviews are good too. Hope Ben & Rosamund don’t disappoint.

  3. Brin says:

Great post! I cannot wait to see this movie!! Love Rosamund, love Ben; heck, I even love Tom (or at least what he said)!!

  4. Isa says:

Girl you didn’t have the jitters, you were contagious.

  5. Sarah says:

Aww, this post made me a little misty eyed. She’s paid her dues, and I really hope the movie does well for her sake.

    • Esmom says:

      Me too, on both counts.

Also, I love the Variety cover shot.

    • Lexie says:

Yes. I’ve been a fan ever since “An Education”. Would love to see her do well and get some really good roles. I think she has the range.

  6. CandyKay says:

Wow, this is the first time I have ever seen anything positive about Cruise on this board. Ever.

  7. Lilacflowers says:

Love Rosamund. Can’t wait to see this movie next Sunday!

  8. Miss M says:

I am so glad she’s getting leading roles. She was great in “Henry and the search of happiness” with Simon Pegg.

  9. Size Does Matter says:

I’m excited to see the movie – what an unexpected yet cool cast (yes I’m a Batfleck apologist, hopefully devoted since Chasing Amy). Debating whether to re-read the book first.

    • Sunny says:

I too am a Batfleck apologist and am looking forward to this movie. I think Ben often chooses bad roles but this role is a great fit for him. Also Chasing Amy forever!

Do a re-read if you have the time. I totally did a re-read of the book last week since I read it right after it first came out and I wanted to appreciate all the intricacies of the plotting prior to seeing the film.

      • Size Does Matter says:

Thanks, Sunny! Ah, Chasing Amy. What a great movie. Never ask a question if you might not be able to live with the answer.

  10. Sarah says:

I really like Rosamund, and I’d really be looking forward to seeing this film, but I just can’t get on board with Ben Affleck. I’m annoyed at him for being in this film, it’s irrational, I know.

    • Brittney B says:

Honestly, I think that makes him perfect for the role. Being “annoyed at him for being” there is spot-on; if you’ve read the book you know what I mean.

Most audience members aren’t going to ADORE him the second he appears on screen, but if we were all on board with the casting choice, we’d be more sympathetic to the character. We’re definitely supposed to have conflicted feelings about Nick… so let’s hope he puts in a great performance and balances out the parts we want to hate.

      • Sarah says:

Hey thanks Brittney B, that’s a great comment! I already feel better about myself for thinking he shouldn’t be there, because we’re not supposed to want him there. That’s some clever stuff that is. 🙂

  11. Luciana says:

Beautiful woman and very talented! She was great in all the movies I have seen her even in that James Bond crap. I really hope she gets an Oscar nom. I’m looking foward to see Gone GIrl though I haven’t read the book so no spoilers, please !!!!!!!

  12. Scarlett says:

    All so very interesting!
I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS MOVIE.

  13. bettyrose says:

Isn’t her character in Gone Girl about 38? Was it written younger for the movie?

    • Sunny says:

I don’t think they would have written younger for the movie. In the book, Amy meets Nick at 32 and the events of the book start 5 years later so 37-38 is dead on for age.

      • bettyrose says:

But she made it sound like this is the start if being cast in younger roles (I.e. 30), which maked me wonder if she realizes her character is older than 35. Well, maybe she’s referring to the flashback scenes.

    • Merritt says:

I don’t see Rosamund’s age as a big deal. I think Affleck’s age is a big deal since Nick is supposed to be about 5 years younger than Amy. Affleck is 42 and looks older at times.

  14. LAK says:

It’s sort of strange that I believe her TC story because he *does* talk in platitudes.

  15. Snugglekitty says:

I just have to comment after literally years of just reading and enjoying CB. But I have strong feelings about Gone Girl, the book captivated and annoyed me highly. I was intrigued by the idea of a film adaptation and the casting for Amy and Nick is really good I think.
BUT. I am distraught by the casting of my fav character, Desi! He was the most interesting and entertaining to me, I pictured someone darkly handsome in a refined way.
NPH is a great actor but the look is not right! Desi should be hot but weird. I don’t know, I don’t have any better ideas… I was hoping some unknown would get the role actually

  16. Hannah says:

Just back from preview here in Dublin and I wish I’d known to look out for the Ben dong. Can’t even think where it could have been.

    LOVED the film btw!
