George Clooney made a surprise (solo) appearance at Comic-Con in NYC

Conspiracy theory: what if George Clooney just married Amal Alamuddin as some kind of overblown viral marketing for his Casamigos Tequila?! *adjusts tin foil hat*

Anyway, these are the first new photos we’ve had of newly married Clooney back on American soil. He was in NYC yesterday to make a “surprise appearance” at Comic-Con (Comic-Con is happening in NYC right now?) to promote his film Tomorrowland. Tomorrowland is a Disney film and George plays a “mysterious failed inventor.” It won’t be out until May 2015. There really was no reason for George to drop in to promote it now, I’m just saying. Unless he was kind of tired of his honeymoon? While at Comic-Con (??), George made jokes.

“It’s not lost on me that I’m spending my honeymoon at Comic-Con,” George Clooney cracked. “My wife was as confused about what Comic-Con was as you are,” he added of his lawyer love Amal Alamuddin.

After declaring it his first Comic-Con, the actor joked about his less-than-celebrated foray into the comic universe as Batman in 1997’S Batman & Robin: Since my Batman I’d been disinvited from Comic-Con for about 15 years — sorry about the nipples on the suit. I see the comment sections on all you guys.”

[From People & Us Weekly]

Ah, George. The prankster who grew up and got married and it was a fairytale. Sort of. Disney should have worked with George on that whole storyline. Oh, and Disney did release the first teaser trailer for the film – there’s only a glimpse of George’s character.

As for Mrs. Clooney… do you guys remember how George Clooney ended up giving like twenty interviews about the Elgin Marbles/Parthenon Marbles earlier this year? I tend to believe he made an off-hand comment about stolen antiquities and it got blown up into something else entirely. Well, funny story – Amal Alamuddin is now going to advise Greece about the Parthenon Marbles in an attempt to get the British Museum to return them to their home.

PS… His wedding ring! I never thought I’d see the day. You changed, bro.

HOORAY! We haven’t seen this guy in a while.

The teaser trailer looks good but needs more jet packs.

  2. Truly says:

Amal’s sick of him out already!

  3. MissBB says:

The tinted glasses make him look older than he is.

  4. lisa2 says:

ashy elbow.. you have to keep that skin moisturized.

George had been promoting his tequila for a long time now. I wonder how it is selling.

not sure how Tomorrowland looks.. the teaser didn’t make me get that excited. It will probably do well. Disney knows how to promote. This just feels so early.

  5. Barrett says:

    He’s in his 50s.

  6. mystified says:

Doesn’t make much sense for a man who claims to hate the paparazzi. Could he be testing political waters?

    • Rocketmerry says:

I think this event is more about balancing out the over the top wedding with a laid back appearence, but yeah, in general he’s going the influencial/political way, it seems.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Too late for that. The wedding left a in your face feeling in a lot of people’s minds.

It looks odd him already running around NY without wifey and No I don’t belive he’s running for some political office. If he was she would have been looking for a home in LA and waving to the crowds in NY standing next to George.

It’s already looking like they will lead two separate lives. Imo

  7. LK says:

Mrs. Clooney and her chamber are really going to get great press coverage for their cases. Even those cases she’s not junior to. Doughty Street is benefiting from its association with her.

PS. this is probably the beginning of many separations from each other. Their time apart will grow longer till they’re only together at events – that’s what my trusty crystal ball says 🙂

    • Belle Epoch says:

Never apart for more than 2 weeks, remember? I say let’s count the days.

    • SuePerb says:

How? She works in International Law. They don’t tout for business in this area, individual barristers are assigned by the Hague (or other more senior barristers assigned by the Hague). All her clients get a lot of press if she is on the defence anyway because of what they are accused of. They are all people who are very well known. If anything her marriage would be more of a hindrance because of the mockery. It is not like she is going in front of a jury, it is conducted in front of 3-15 judges and they would not be awe struck that Mrs Hollywood is sitting one one side.

Even if she didn’t work in international law, if you nicked a car or murdered someone and were going to court, you do not get a choice of barristers. That is not how the law works in Britain. Barristers are on a cab rank system and you only get to see who is your barrister when you are in court. Your solicitor would deal with her if she is assigned to your case.

      • wolfpup says:

        Interesting, SuePerb.

      • Sara says:

Yes they do. She will be assigned more ‘human rights’ cases after this publicity tour. Further still, after all this PR, her chambers will focus on her rather than her colleagues, who may be more talented.

      • SuePerb says:

@Sara, You misunderstand how barristers work. Please note that in Britain we have Solicitors and Barristers, solicitors are more or less equivalent to US lawyers doing all the leg work on cases. Barristers are the ones who fight the cases in court. They do not usually meet the clients in normal circumstances until they appear in court. International law works a little differently because they do need to talk to their clients beforehand as there is no solicitor involved.

The accused are assigned a lead lawyer/barrister (always a Queen’s Council which there are only just over 1,500 of, – see explanation of QC below). They are appointed by the Hague. These lead lawyers then pick their teams due to expertise in certain fields from any chamber.

Believe me that in this field they would not pick a numpty barrister who couldn’t help their case just because of who her husband is. The British upper class (the old boy network) are more likely to ridicule her for being Mrs Clooney, rather than attempt to further her career because of it. I know a lot of the upper class and honestly unless they are someone of a total lovey nature like Dame Judi Dench or Sir Laurence Olivier, they look down their noses at actors, American actors are looked down on more due to the accusers being upper classed twits.

They do not work as a team in a chamber. You can get barristers from Doughty Street working on both sides because they are all self employed. A chamber is simply a clerical office who do paperwork for the barristers and the barristers split the costs to pay the salaries. It would be too expensive if you had to hire lots of individual clerks when you need them and still pay their salaries when you don’t, hence why a chamber is created and the barristers split the costs across the board monthly, whether they have needed clerks or not.

And again, her clients are well known people. You may not know who Ayash et al, Prime Minister Hariri, or Yulia Tymoshenko are but they are very well known in their countries. Having publicity that she is defending/prosecuting one of these people would never result in a favourable bias trial outcome. Ever, because public opinion doesn’t enter into it. Political opinion maybe, then she should have married Barak Obama. Clooney’s BFF with Obama wouldn’t impress the judges.

*Queen’s Council Vs Junior Barrister. To become a QC (or silk as they are known) you need to apply to the UK selection board (made up of upper class snobs who are bigoted and sexist) There is less than 1.500 QC’s (not all work in international law, this figure would be drastically reduced) and from that only 152 are female and only 68 (male and female) are not white British. As she is a foreign born female, her chances of becoming a QC is next to nothing. There is nothing junior about Junior Barristers, most are Junior Barristers which if in the US would be senior partners. Many Junior Barristers apply for selection after about 15 years only to be turned down.

      • wolfpup says:

I do not believe that a trial outcome, and Barack Obama’s gain of a constitutional position, is comparable. Barack Obama convinced over half of the United States that we could trust him, his agenda, and his integrity to govern- not merely one judge – although many judges voted for him. George Clooney is a poor comparison as well, as he would have a very hard time convincing others of his ability to govern, in the same way Gyweneth Paltrow (sp) would be unable to do. They are celebrities that only have him over for dinner. Barack distinguished himself before becoming president, and was even given the Nobel Peace Prize. Your comment is amazing, SuPerb, I just disagree with that part of it.

      • SuePerb says:

What I meant was that the only way a trial could be bias because of who she was married to was that being married to the US president may be a plus, however saying that the ICJ (International Court of Justice in The Hague) has judges from all over the world presiding and not all of them are American allies (I think there is one presiding American judge) so even if she was married to a US president it wouldn’t help her case. Being married to George Clooney does not help her case one bit as George Clooney is a nobody where international politics and world affairs is concerned. They are tried only by judges, not by juries so public opinion matters little.

The only persuasion of public opinion would be who The Hague brings to trial in the first place, then it gets very political, however this is before they decide on who will be the lead lawyers and before they pick teams. They can do inquests (which they have done) but bringing someone to trial is a political minefield and being Mrs Clooney does not enter into any of this.

    • pato says:

They already got a case in Greece about some ancient statues that are in the British Museum. Mrs Clooney and her boss will be in Athens next week. And even the news agencies covered the news.. I know because I did it

      • Gabriel says:

There is no human rights lawyer who doesn’t want their case to become a CAUSE. The extra media attention is exactly what these people want; with her connection to GC, she’ll be a favoured appointed barrister for such “cause cases”.

  8. Div says:

Movie looks interesting. I’m curious if he and Amal will have kids. I’m surprised people are surprised at his gushing. Both men and women can have biological clocks or a point in their life where they want to settle down. I have a family friend who was a playboy bachelor type and swore he was never going to have kids…and then when he hit his 40s he started singing a totally different tune and got married and had a kid all in a two year period. It’s not that unusual. Also, he’s never going to run for office…he’s said that his past was way too colorful.

  9. Barrett says:

He wants me to think of him as the Carey Grant type. I still see him as the guy from facts of life with a mullet. You don’t fool me, Clooney. Almalooney.

    • mystified says:

You REALLY made me laugh: the thought of Cary Grant in a mullet! 🙂

      • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Now if some clever you tuber could replace Carey Grants fox silver fox hair with George Clooneys “facts of life” brown Mullet in movies To Catch a Thief or North by Northwest this would be a hoot.

  10. Babalon says:

I think he went because it’s a great place to prowl for men.

    • CM says:

Honestly – help me out here. I’m out of love with Mr Clooney these days (except when I catch an old ER or Out of Sight or One Fine Day etc…) and I’m really not bothered one way or the other but… Why do people/blind items persist in thinking the man is gay?

I’m genuinely asking why you think that if he was, he’d still be going to such lengths to hide it? I mean, isn’t he beyond the age when his people will worry about him getting a big romantic lead and oh-gosh-we-must-protect-all-those-poor-morons-that-won’t-buy-a-gay-man-playing-straight? And he’s Hollywood royalty. Who directs his own films that he stars in, when he wants a part, no? Wouldn’t his position these days be like… Jodie Foster’s? I mean, why not come out? Of course, the other side of that argument is why SHOULD he have to come out, right? But… why carry on such constant high-profile bearding? And such an over-the-top wedding! Why would someone in his position not just let it that crap go? Like Kevin Spacey, for example?

Is the argument that the wedding was to help him run for office? Even though he’s repeatedly said he has no interest in doing that? And if he doesn’t run, will everyone still think he’s gay?

      I’m probably just horribly naive…..

      • no way says:

What do you mean like Kevin Spacey? No one knows whether he is gay, bi or straight either. He supposedly had a long term relationship with a women and then was dating Ashleigh Banfield.

Still Kevin isn’t George. Kevin, although a leading man, he really is a very good character actor. George not so much more movie star quality. Plus he is so into old classic Hollywood, I think a lot of people believe he could be doing the classic Showmance to enhance his image, and is gay or bi. In fact the spectacle of a wedding did seem to me to try and emulate Grace Kelly and Prince Ranier opulence. I think People magazine thought that too, and put Grace Kelly on the cover with their wedding photos. Plus it might all be real love, but sure looked like scripted wedding and romance to a lot of people. Too much bravado.

      • CM says:

Yes, lots of bravado. But I wanted to know why he’d be hiding the fact he’s gay so… opulently. You’re saying it’s because he’s keen for an old-school Hollywood image?

      • mia girl says:

I loved him and Michelle Pfeiffer in One Fine Day.

      • no way says:

No not so much keen for the old school Hollywood image, I think he actually believes it. I can see a scenario that If he is bi or gay, he believes the Rock Hudson, probably Cary Grant image that if he came out it would hurt his career. To be honest he is probably right, not because the world isn’t ready for gay leading men, but because he has given us an image of the cool, womanizing finally in love bachelor. If he came out even before Amal, not sure it would go over well with his fan base as he has sold his personal life so hard the last two decades as something else. He would look like a fraud, and because he seems so honest and down to earth too, the images conflict big time.

Not saying this is true, but I could see why some people think it, and I wouldn’t be completely surprised if it was something like this.

      • Emmet says:

It may be as long as his parents are alive, he’ll stay in the closet (if he is there). He still comes off as old school on that. Always comes across as wanting to please dad, yet doing in the career and personal life what dad could not do. That shadow of the aunt still looms very large in that family. Anyhoo, seems to me that way

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      I think he’s bi…….
I have always believed he plays both sides. A friend played in his basketball games a few times years and years ago and said he believed he was bi, but wouldn’t say why he thought that. So who knows? Not that it matters really, but he does seem a bit of a mystery sexually. IMO

      • alreadyready says:

Well, he has been in a long relationship with a man in Como, according to many sources in Italian fashion- adv business.

      • Kim1 says:

So George has been in a LTR with a man in Como ? Yet noone can describe this mystery man.Height, age etc.George is also involved with Rande? So which man is the side piece?

  11. Jaderu says:

Not enough Bill Murray or boats in this Clooney story.
Plus it looks like he absent mindedly set his elbows down in the ashes of his youth.

  12. K. says:

Don’t mind the guy but it looks like he’s aged 20 years!

  13. your majesty says:

Gosh, he looks so old. I am the same age as Amal and would never marry someone who looks that old. To each her own I guess.

  14. MediaD says:

:slow clap: I’ve got to give it to him. This year has been such a good slow open for a political campaign. Stable but actively and positively in the public eye the whole time.

  15. Miss M says:

I am soooooooooooooooooooooo glad I didn’t go this year, phew!!!! I don’t know how I would feel having the chance of meeting the dauphin of Como (thanks, QQ for that one!) who finally met his equal.

But, in all honesty, I was a little teary when I sold my pass, 🙁

ps: Yes, Kaiser. Comic con Started yesterday and goes until Sunday.

  16. Someonestolemyname says:

Married in name only and big red carpet events probably.
Already he’s true to form. He will probably only be with Wifey when he needs an Escort for some big event.
I think that big showy spectacle was a bit of a Farce.

Wonder what he’s really looking for in NY?

P.S. Angelina is at BuckinghamPalace today with the Queen. The photos are glorious.

    • Toot says:

Yeah, I’m so happy for Angelina.

    • frisbeejada says:

Saw the photo’s at Buck House and they are lovely of both of them. Wondered if something ‘honorary’ was Clooney’s long term aim? Not one at all for conspiracy theories but even to me there seems to be a move by Amalooney towards a JP style public image/sphere of influence, wonder if he’s a teeny bit jealous of them?

      • Someonestolemyname says:

I think he wants some of Angelina’s gravitas internationally. JMO.

P.S. Brad and the kids were at the Palace with Angelina and according to one report, met the Queen after the event in a separate private room.

      • frisbeejada says:

If that’s the case then he has a pretty impossible mountain to climb given the complete prate he’s made of himself recently!

  17. Izzy says:

So he goes to Comic-Con to promote a project, and while there insults attendees by implying they’re clueless about what the event is? If it was so distasteful to him, why did he bother going? He sounded like a jackass making that “joke.”

  18. Jessica says:

There are many conventions that happen all around the country at different times of year. The San Diego Comic Con in July may be the most well known but there are a ton more, including Mega Con in Orlando in March and New York Comic Con in October.

  19. Green Is Good says:

Am I the only one who thinks it’s weird in the middle of his publicly stunt, er “honeymoon” George shows up at Comic-con to promote a movie that’s not coming out for another year?

    • frisbeejada says:

No you’re not, it is weird, the whole debacle has so far been weird, this is just another inevitable step on the road to terminal weirdness – it just beats the hell out of me that he thinks nobody has noticed!

      • Someonestolemyname says:

She was back right after the wedding some say , in London.
When did they have a honeymoon?
        The entire spectacle was weird.

I think it’s same, same ole, George calls up the Escort but now legal WIFEY when he needs her for an appearance and probably for good measure some Downton Abbey style photo spread in their UK mansion granted to some magazines.

      • Nimbolicious says:

Yeah…..he needed a dude fix. Once the Wedding of the Century was over and the cameras went away, life as one half of Amalooney holed up in Wherever-shire got to feeling a whole lot less compelling IMHO…..

      • Santolina says:

We can thank People and Vanity Fair who bought the pictures and footed a major part of the bill for his circus wedding. Everybody could see those two loved the spotlight more than each other. They probably couldn’t wait to get away from each other and spend time with their real lovers. Someday, we’ll find out why this incomprehensible match-up was rushed into production so desperately.

    • Christin says:

Next, I expect he will venture down to Kentucky and deliver his tequila to some moonshiners. Just to keep everyone reminded he was once a tobacco picking guy who just has upscale tastes.

  20. Guesto says:

I can’t believe someone so long in the (media) tooth and with three decades of Hollywood experience behind him has turned into such a buffoon. He wants to be seen in an old school classy light, he wants to be that charming, dignified, loved-by-all Hollywood power-broker, but instead of using all the means and money at his disposal to achieve that, instead lets his truly massive ego guide his decisions, which is why he ends up looking increasingly like a petulant, insecure, needy, attention-seeking d-lister.

  21. Hissyfit says:

He was there to announce that he is still on his honeymoon, y’all! He is still selling this marriage, promoting his wife, and still want people to talk about it! Lol.

As for his appearance, I think it is normal for the actors in the movie to promote it even if it’s a year earlier. They usually drop teaser trailer in these events to hype it up and make people excited. If I remember correctly, Jolie did the same thing last year with Maleficent and the response was great. Disney wants their $$$.

  22. EscapedConvent says:

It seems peculiar to me that GC is dropping in anywhere during what is supposed to be his honeymoon. Wasn’t the wedding just last week?

    • Sara says:

To be fair, they have been on honeymoon all year, and lead fairy tale lives where every other weekend is a safari or trip to the Seychelles or Mexico or Venice or Lake Como.

  23. norah says:

so let me understand this – clooney who tortured everyone by declaring his love for amal and made us all witness the 4 day party ( wedding ) in venice with all the media present disappeared to london and seychelles whatever on a honeymoon and then decided to leave his wife who apparently has left his loving arms to fly all the way to new york for a movie that will only release in 2015? and which is well known but not as well known as san diego at least – does this make any sense? and also has he changed his pr pple – cos he seems to be doing all the oddest things and not as savvy as i thought he was.

  24. Cheryl says:

Are those Sarah Palin’s sunglasses (from the story adjacent)? Except on him, they highlight grey eyebrows.

  25. boredblond says:

Twelve days..okay, who had 12 days in the pool? Yawn…cloodashian’s no longer interesting.

  26. Ruyana says:

Over the last decade George has gotten soooooo booooring.

  27. Amy says:

Yup NYCC started yesterday and goes til Sunday. I get to go for free and I get a 4 day pro pass because I work in the industry. I went after work yesterday for a bit before it closed. I actually met the artist who was commissioned to do the Amazing Amy artwork in Gone Girl-if you’ve seen the movie, you’ll remember the book launch scene of Amazing Amy? There were a few drawings in there and I got to see a few up close sketches which was pretty cool. However I wasn’t there when Clooney was and I’m okay with that.

Going back tomorrow for a book signing of my fave author (out of curiosity does anyone read the Kate Daniels books by Ilona Andrews? Because they are at NYCC this year!) and NOT looking forward to the crowds. There are so many more people compared to last year, it’s a bit less fun.

    • Miss M says:

There are more people than last year? How can they fit at Jarvis center? Someone needs to look into it for security purposes…

  28. DGO says:

Please. Like there ever was a honeymoon. She was seen flying into Heathrow alone, and he’s alone in NY. Scam written all over it.

    • Jayna says:

No photos of her on her solo flight. Then it was said they were on some honeymoon that the place was wrong.. Then it was said they were on a private honeymoon Brad recommended the place and photos were shown of the place. Then it was they flew back to England together after the wedding and were ensconced in their new mansion.

Many made-up stories and only one that is true. Who knows?

  29. Dari says:

His parents are still alive and old fashioned Catholic, if he is gay he will respect them.

I no longer read anything on him, but I had to read your comments.

  30. mhatr says:

Married a few weeks and finally coming to his favorite New York Hotel for the honeymoon

  31. funny bone says:

Maybe George and Amal Clooney simply fell in love and got married. I have been critical on this site. If I were honest my previous comments of criticism was because I was jealous. I’m a woman. I speak only of my sharpness. Now to be perfectly honest I hope its a love marriage. But it has a lot of ” movie suspense ” . Somebody is good at marketing even if its real.

    • norah says:

i think we all want that for anyone and i have always liked clooney – at least having his 2 year girlfriend thing was his own business but its just that this behaviour with meeting amal and engaged and getting married in a short span is just so unlike gc. i hope that they work out but somehow their togetherness just seems so off – wedding photos and even splitting up – i know she has work etc but she had the last couple of months planning for this and she cdnt find the time to travel with him?? smells fishy

  32. Miss M says:

Touché to Michael Joe mentioning the Clooney was at the Venice comic con prior to NYC comic con, lol

  33. Someonestolemyname says:

Daily Mail has big article on Clooney house, DMail is saying house is listed in Berkshire

  34. mariaj says:

About if and how we could name the ( supposed) side pieces of Clooney, well, beyond Rande there has also been rumours of that Waldo SAnchez guy, that apparently is with him a Comicon, too.
